Hopefully 8th ed will nerf scatbikes and wk and toss in an option for Autarchs to webway strike.

Also, speaking of Autarchs what gives with them not being able to join with most aspects without botching everything for them? They can't go with Scorps cuz they can't infiltrate. They can't keep up with banshees and their +3 movements. They can't move and shoot with reaper launchers or get the benefits of rangefinders. They don't ruin things for Dragons, Hawks, Spiders or Avengers, but they don't bring any discernible benefit either. It seems the only thing they go well with are Spears as they add some much needed weight of attacks.

Despite being fluffed as having mastered multiple Aspect paths, they don't really seem to add much to an Aspect army.

Path of the Warrior books is pretty much all about this. Alaitoc are very dedicated to the path and heed their calling unquestioningly. There is one character who is traumatised when she finds out the messed up shit she did while she had her War-Mask on and leaves the shrine in disgust. The Aspect Warriors are generally held in awe and fear. They're heroes, because the craftworld couldn't survive without them, but the main character's asshole still tightens up at one point when he has to pass some Dark Reapers on the street. He's also a little disorientated when it dawns on him that one of the Reapers is, or was, his friend and his unnerved by how much he's changed.

If one wanted to hide, chances are they'd end up as a scorpion, if one wants to destroy probably become a fire dragon.

Also from the lore you'd be surprised how lax they are when it comes to needing warriors to fight shit, there isn't really a recruitment drive save for Biel-tan's outlook on the path of the warrior. Twins etc are automatically signed up for Revenant duty but other than that, they don't seem to care much. If shit does hit the fan they'll ask for guardians mind you. Autarchs putting them in a semi warmask trance to shield them from being sucked into all the anger, hate etc

In the codex, munitorum and imperial armour fluff entries on the war-mask it is made clear the physical helm itself is important. In thorpe's version the armour isn't important and you can donne your mask without it, which kinda fucks up the whole theme of their weapons and arms being extensions of their warrior selves.

He also does a really crap job of having the characters behave in any way different from their regular selves. They keep thinking about all kinds of stupid irrelevant shit when Aspects are supposed to be laser focused. Korlandril keeps making stupid observations on Imperial social hierarchies in the middle of a battle and talking about all kinds of shit that make it seem like his mind isn't on the job.

They're not silent robots though. Each aspect is characterised differently. Dragons are ebulliant and hot blooded. Hawks take joy in movement. Banshees channel their grief into vengeful screams. Reapers are morbid and dark humoured. Scorpions are stoic and sinsister. Thorpe even acknowledges this in the book, he just does a shitty job in representing it.

There was potential for a great inner conflict with the civilian persona battling the warrior self for dominance. Unfortunately, Gav sucks cock at characterisation and pacing, and fails to differentiate Korlandril and Not-Korlandril while also doing a total rush job with his descent into Exarch-hood. Something that is said to take a long time to happen instead takes place after TWO fucking battles.

One thing that needs to be remembered, is that the path system is extremely against natural eldar inclinations. The Eldar are SUPPOSED to get locked into a murder trance and become manically obsessed with killing shit. They are a genetically engineered warrior race after all. The path system is an artificial restriction the Craftworld Eldar hold over themselves in order to prevent the emotional excesses (that come naturally to Eldar), which caused the fall.

If one want's to see how eldar act "naturally" one only has to look at the Dark Eldar. They exhibit the primal, unchained, and uncontrolled Eldar mentality, prone to utter emotional excess, and awesome as well as terrifying to behold.

In the Asurmen novel, the titular Phoenix Lord interacts with an Eldar pilot, who views him in a mixture of awe and terror.
That book is pretty neat.
It gives a bit of character to Asurmen, and also has an interesting aspect of showcasing how Eldar treat their children, which I haven't encountered anywhere else, as the pilot in question, has her babby with her.

The book shows that the Eldar communicate largely telepathically with their babies, but seem to treat it almost like we treat breastfeeding, as something that the baby needs to be weaned off from.
Also, Eldar babies are strong enough psykers that they can take over the mind of an adult human, and force that human to kill himself.

They do do a good job blend in various 'ancient civilisation' designs without it looking incoherent.

My honest opinion is that the Dark Eldar update is one of the best GW has ever done. Old DE were cool and had interesting ideas behind them but ultimately suffered due to goofy sculpts. The new DE designs perfectly encapsulated the factions ideals and really created some unique and beautiful designs.

I think they were the last good work GW ever did.

The main thing I enjoyed coming out of this was Lilith having a weak spot for her niece. Caring about their family has gotten Archons killed before. I like it.
