>>
>>49886991
The very idea that high ground is worth anything is a complete lie made up by 1920s pulp novels. Everyone knows that being in a pit is the best way to fight. After all, you carry your weapon with your upper arms and aim with your head. If those can draw a line to your enemy, then you're good. And if your enemy is above you, he can't bring his weapons to bear as easily. And at range, you can get his head before he can get yours.

High ground is strategically useful for seeing your enemy's army approach, your archers having similarly improved range, and fighting downhill is easier than pushing uphill.

Pits are better presently, though not being at the fight at all is taking the lead now.

>>
>>49886949
But OP, harpies are about AIR SUPERIORITY rather than HIGH GROUND.

The point about having the high ground is because you can engage and disengage the opponent way easier, due to how your line of sight will work.
If you hold the high ground, you can break line of sight with your enemy just by taking a few steps back or crouching. You control how the confront goes. The enemy on the lower ground can move forward, move back, duck, roll, or whatever, and he won't break LoS unless there's something he can hide behind or inside of. Even if he goes right up to directly below you, you can just peek down from unexpected angles to fire at him, and immediately hide again, or better yet, just drop an explosive.

Also, in terms of pure aiming (even with melee weapons, if you're up close and personal) holding the high ground is severe advantage. If you're in greater height than your enemy, it becomes hard NOT to hit his head, shoulders or chest - and if you miss these targets, you may still hit the lower parts of the body.
Now if you're attacking from below, aiming for the head is almost a guaranteed miss, and having to look up puts you at severe disadvantage just because you may end up having to stare at the bright sky.

Trench fighting is a good substitute for holding the high ground, and it is effective, at least until the enemy gets close - since jumping into a trench is a matter of seconds, while climbing a wall or breaching into a building will take herculean effort.

Then again, trenches are more effective against artillery than high ground is, indeed.

Autism aside, if we speak about harpies... they really don't do much, unless you don't have anyone with magic or a ranged weapon in your party desu.

Think about it like this
>Obi-Wan told Anaken that it was over because "I have the high ground"
>Yet he also defeated Darth Maul years earlier by jumping out of a seemingly bottomless pit
How do we harmonize these facts? By saying George Lucas is a hack with zero short term memory? Fuck no, he's a genius. In both cases Obi-Wan has the *moral* high ground.
>Hurrdurr but why did the fight between Obi-Wan and Anaken last so long then?
Because Anaken had only just started his descent into the Dark Side of the force. As the battle against his own master, an expert in the Light Side, raged on his corruption by the Dark Side became clear. After a long fight, filled with attempts of the apprentice to kill his master, Anaken had built up so much negative karma that Obi-Wan's moral high ground had become insurmountable. At that point the battle truly was over. Regardless of the position of the two relative to eachother on the physical plane of reality, morally speaking Anaken was an ant from where Obi-Wan was standing.

So we defeat sexy harpy sluts by being pure and forcing them to surrender to the +5 Holy Paladin Dick. After having mindbroken and impregnated them, it is our holy duty to take care of cute and lovely half-harpy children. Otherwise we'd lose our moral high ground.

I feel like Harpies are ineffective in most encounters not because they're necessarily poor enemies, but because the DM needs to make them use poor tactics to make the encounter fun.

If you wanted to make it a dangerous fight with RAW, give the harpies bows and have them shoot the party from range rather than close to melee. Focus fire the wizard first to take him out of the fight, then the ranger, then the cleric, then everyone else. Dangerous? Yes. Fun? Only for a party that likes a challenge.

>>49891811
>Fun? Only for a party that likes a challenge.
You mean only for people that aren't total pussies. If you enter an encounter, you enter it with the intent to win. That goes for players and NPCs alike. If the enemy tries something clever, you try to counter it or undo their advantage somehow. If it's clear you cannot win, there's no shame in retreating.

Intelligent party members that don't believe the DM entitles them to victory every time will probably use a spell that makes range attacks moot, or retreat to a thick forest or a cave where the harpy's air superiority becomes worthless. The harpies will either be forced to enter terrain that's not to their advantage, or they will have to leave. Or they could try to smoke the party out, of course.

Trenches and foxholes have slots near your feet for you to stuff grenades into should someone manage to throw one in. You kick it in the slot and then brace yourself against the walls so the grenade has no direct line toward you other than through like 3 or 4 feet of dirt. Sure the explosion will ring your bell but you'll live.

People dig holes in war for protection against artilliary and other explosives primarily.
