I already have demonic and diabolic tutor, increasing ambition, undead sidisi and beseech the queen, so I'm glad to know I can use my existing tech. I just didn't know if there was a cheap green tutor I was missing out on.

Also, I'm running Butcher of Malkair because I can't get my hands on a dictate of erebos/am running decent reanimator, and puppeteer clique because I can't find a woodfall primus.

Any spicy easily acquired suggestions? My flgs is small and I don't have a credit card.
>>
How do I into Yisan? I don't have any green and I like cheating things into play. I don't really want to go super turbo Spike with him though.
>>
>>49881467
play goodstuff not cards that perfectly curve into each other to win you the game then.
>>
>>49881467
Yisan is the wrong commander for you. Put him in the 99 of a simic deck for extra spice. Yissan has a linear tutored list that is pretty multipurpose, but deviating from it dramatically reduces how good he is. Just run elvish Piper, quicksilver amulet or rock Mayel. Maelstrom is also super easy to build and pretty strong on a budget.
>>
>>49880767
Starting to want to do this. I'm so sick of going through the same fucking process of finding a cheap commander, planning a deck out and getting hype then finding out that one of the more unique cards only had one print run ten years ago and costs >$100 despite not being a staple in any format. fuck that. Once you hit 10-20 dual lands + rocks of the variety of your choice it's practically impossible to miss your mana requirements in 2C unless you're just loaded out the ass with triple or quadruple color requirements.

What kind of drugs are those guys on that they would consider GLotus a requirement in every 2C deck. I would also cut almost all the rocks for ramp if I was in green or white.
>>
>>49881974
I agree with you on everything except that last part. Gilded Lotus is just an amazing card all around.
>>
>>49881957
I run every fetch I can in 3 color decks because why not

I only do it in 2 color decks if I can benefit from the shuffle/landfall/sacrifice

Also, the point of shuffling is not to evenly distribute your lands, so "your shuffling sucks" has nothing to do with it
>>
>>49881821
I don't like 3 mana rocks and would rather run 2 mana ones. Fellwar Stone, Thought Vessel, Mind Stone. Yeah, some aren't technically color fixing, but they're ramping.

Shuffling is great for Sylvan library/ top. It also stops combos like tunnel vision. There is graveyard interaction with fetches too.

Also there is deck thinning, which is not completely irrelevant, especially in decks with land based ramp.
>>
>>49882100
It's actually not as bad as I thought. I mean he even had T2 anvil out at our lgs and he still lost.

It is absolutely game warping though and if you have competent players in your group he will probably lose every game because he is the archenemy, horseshit abilities or no.
>>
>>49882177
It's basically irrelevant. You do have longer games in Commander than in other formats, but you also have 40 more cards in the deck, which means it's probably WORSE thinning than it is in other Constructed formats, where the thinning is irrelevant.

>>
>>49882177
But shuffling is purely random, you could have obtained the one card you needed had you not shuffled. This isn't a 60 card game when you can run sets of any particular card and be fine after a shuffle. Any deck with that ridiculous of a landbase that is not landfall is particularly stupid.
>>
>>49882023

>>
>>49882274
You missed his point.

You can use shuffling alongside Sylvan Library/Top to put away cards you don't want. It also fights Tunnel Vision, all on demand.
>>
>>49882320

Okay but you bought them to put in your deck so the reasoning still applies to you just in the past

>>49882330
So you are telling me the reason to shuffle is not for card advantage or thinning but just to stop a combo from going off that is only in maybe a few select metas?
>>
>>49882353
...no? I traded for them, first of all. Second, I use them in every deck -because I already fucking own them-. I got them to make sure I had at least 1 copy of every shock, fetch, and dual for Commander. Why would I say "Well, I -own- a Polluted Delta, but I guess I should kill myself for considering putting it in my Gitrog deck."
>>
>>49882370
No, I'm telling you that the best part of being able to shuffle on demand is card SELECTION, for stuff like Brainstorm, Sylvan Library, and SDT. You draw 3, put back 2 chaff cards, shuffle them away and next turn dig 3 deep again. That's one of the reasons fetches are so heavily played in Legacy (to the point that they outnumber actual duals in some decks)
>>
>>49882379

Trading and buying are the same, you traded stuff worth money I assume?

Anyway I'm not the person who told you to kys, you just said "why not run every fetch" and I'm telling you, there's a great reason not to trade away valuable cards or valuable cash to run them

>>
>>49882390
Because that is for 60 card you dumbfuck. Running excessive fetchlands in EDH can hurt you more often than not, if you want to run multiple fetches that is your decision but running every single one for the purpose of SDT, Library, or to stop Tunnel Vision is dumb.
>>
>>49882434
fuck you.
>>
>>49882439
Nobody's running it specifically to stop Tunnel Vision, you fucking mongoloid. I mean, it's great if you get to just go "lol fuck you" to that combo, but that's tertiary at best.

The PRIMARY reason to run fetches is for color fixing (since they can find 2 kinds of lands, and even the off-color ones can find your shocks and duals). The secondary reason to run them is for landfall, things-dying triggers, and to abuse the ability to shuffle on demand.

I'm not saying every deck needs to have every single fetch, I'm just saying if you already own the fetches, there's very little reason not to put them in.

Was at Tuesday casual night with sultai midrange leovold. Everyone was groaning and I said it's just midrange and they were like alright. I do run some wheel effects though. We played and everyone is all "my hand fuckin sucks" so I windfall without Leovold on board and everyone is like wow thanks but the tryhard meren player is talking shit like "that's not how you play that deck" there was also a new kid playing Mina and denn I think is what they're called the gruul extra lands commander but it wasn't quite up to snuff didn't really seem to have a game plan and had low impact cards. I'm playing my creatures like sylvan Caryatid and villainous wealth for the value. But the meren player kept targeting the new kid cause I guess he was an easy target and calling him bad at magic and telling everyone I don't know how to build a leovold deck and kinda being rude

I don't like when other people call others bad at magic especially in commander when you just try to do you and it could make people not want to come back and play. And by the grace of Leopold himself I top deck demonic tutor search up tooth and nail entwine it with 1 mana to spare fetching palinchron and rune scar demon using the demon to fetch dead eye played dead eye soul bond to palinchron. Everyone is about to scoop and I say hold on. Make infinite mana then soulbond demon to fetch venser and ugin. Play venser and soul bond him bounce every single permanent that guy had and played ugin bounced ugin with venser and ghostfired him out the game then bounced ugin and minuses 7 to exile all my combo pieces and reset the board. Bitch. YOU'RE the one we don't want to play with.

How I usually play the Leovold deck is just get ramp up to some solid dudes or get villainous wealth or fascination and see where it goes from there. But never lock people out the game unless it specifically calls for it. The fact that people have ridiculous commander decks but don't play it out as such always makes me happy wit new player
>>
>>49882758
Anon you can run a 99 land deck and have no fixing problems without fetches. It doesnt mean that your deck isn't suffering from it.

Go ahead and show us a deck list, hell make it mono-colored if you want. I bet it will be better with a few fetches.

If nobody lets you draw off Rhystic study then you're getting the very best tax effect that exists because it's asymmetrical and effects every spell instead of just certain kinds

Rituals, flashback rituals. You don't really need a super high storm count to get good value off dragonstorm.
>>
>>49883159

Honestly not that hard since part of going off in a storm deck is rituals which net storm and mana

Like in a red black storm deck you could go dark ritual, cabal ritual, seething song, past in flames dark ritual, cabal ritual, seething song, demonic tutor, dragonstorm and put 9 dragons into play

Dragonstorm is better in 20 life 60 card formats though where just a few dragons wins the game instantly

So if i conspire the original spell a bunch of times, none of the copies will have epic? i know that copying the copies made by the epic effect doesnt add more to each turn, but i thought that copying the original keeps the epic on each copy made from it.
>>
>>49883382
>A bunch of times
You can't conspire it more than once unless you have a bunch of Worts. You can't tap 10 Goblins to Conspire it 5 times. It's a one-or-none thing, per instance of Conspire.

If you Conspire it, the copies also have Epic, yes. But mostly that you can't mass-conspire it.
>>
>>49883382
Epic states you may not cast spells
>>
>>49883395

>>
>>49883391

Ah, just looked into conspire and how it works. Go figure they errata'd the effect to "Cast" instead of play. Reads as "play" on wort so yeah, got to thinking up shenanigans.

Oh well, things can still be made silly with her.
>>
>>49883159
mana doublers, artifacts, urza's block "free spells" can get you an insane storm count
>>
>>49883447
...that's not functional errata. It NEVER worked like that. Pre M10, you could Play a land, Play a spell, or Play an activated ability. Once they changed it to "play land, cast spell, activate ability", MOST things that said Play were errata'd to "cast", but that wasn't a functional change, just a verbiage one; like changing "comes into play" to "Enters the battlefield". Still works exactly the same, just with the new wording.

A very small portion of things kept the 'play' wording, because they could play a land OR cast a spell, so that wording remained in Oracle text to mean 'play if land, cast if spell'. But even when Wort's Oracle text matched her printed text, this trick didn't work.
>>
>>49883447
"Play" and "Cast" were always synonymous though. That's why things like storm didn't just keep storming.
>>
>>49883484

So i'm just a dumbass. Gotcha.

Teaches me to read cards more closely then.
>>
>>49883485
Not to mention it isn't the play/cast thing that stops it from working the way he thought, it's the fact that you can either tap 2 things to Conspire, or you don't.

>>49883484

Not him; it can reduce the total cost, but not the replicate cost, which is what I believe the other guy is going for.

Shit, my bad. I was remembering Replicate as a trigger of "You may pay [COST] any number of times", rather than an additional cost.

Still, it's only a one-time reduction. If you've got 3 experience counters for a 3U spell, it's not gonna make the Replicate cost be U, it'll just knock 3 off of whatever the final sum is.

And then Mizzix reduces that Replicate cost. An example:

>Spell costs 3UR
>Illuminatus and Mizzix are out
>you have 9 counters
>choose to Replicate 3 times
>spell + Replicate would cost total of 9UUURRR
>Mizzix's ability applies
>now pay UUURRR in total
We should probably ask gA to be sure but I think that's how it works, since Replicate would be part of the spell's total cost
>>
>>49883717
I used to have a shitty Kazuul deck. It rarely won, but it made games fun. It paints a somewhat large target on your face, and Red isn't super well-equipped to deal with hate, but since you seem to be totally insane, you can probably cope.

I ran with Avatar of Slaughter, Curse of the Nightly Hunt, Fumiko the Lowblood, Goblin Diplomats, Heckling Fiends, Rage Nimbus, and War's Toll as combat-forcers.
>>
>>49883766
Yeah. You say "I'm gonna Replicate this N times" as part of casting it, and tack that cost onto the spell as... well, an additional cost. Then you apply Mizzix's discount. So you'll end up making it 9 mana cheaper, but that's off of the FINAL cost of the spell- not off of each 'iteration' of the Replicate cost.

Working on Leovold, been doing so since he was spoiled. I am conflicted as I want it to be my most utterly degenerate deck (I kinda want to have my decks scale from silly tribal fun time to NO FUN ALLOWED depending on who I am playing against... especially the guy with Derevi).

However, despite that desire, when I look for good lists to reference, they're all either looking at Palinchron/Deadeye infinite combos (which I believe is going to get banned some day) or Doomsday.

For Deadeye, aside from my paranoia, I also tend to dislike anything requiring 3 or 4 specific cards to combo. And for Doomsday I find it utterly convoluted (wouldn't leveler be more direct and not waste so much time crafting a specific stack?)

I'm thinking of just making it Evil Edric. Wheel to empty hands, and ping people with specters and whatnot while they're locked out.
>>
>>49883859

I used to think infect was unfair, but really, in a competitive meta, it is not. It's just as easy, if not easier to deal commander damage in the time it takes to do 10 poison counters.

I think a huge misconception in the commander community is the reasoning behind commander damage being a wincon. It's not just there so your special snowflake voltron can one shot consistently, it's there to STOP decks like lifegain that could potentially dominate the format. Infect is designed in the same way. In a game without commander damage, a dedicated lifegain deck with pillowfort would just be *too* difficult and timeconsuming to take down.

Commander damage and infect serve as a cap to stop decks like that from dominating all out

I would be ok with the Rules Committee just banning 25-30 cards and just trying to rebalance Commander by flushing many "staples" and cards that are just TOO powerful no matter the pod size.

The following Banlist would improve EDH
>Leovold, Emmisary of Trest
>Mizzix of the Izmagnus
>Maelstrom Wanderer
>Kokusho, the Evening Star
>Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger
>Mana Crypt

Would Sublime Archangel be a terrible choice? I basically want Rafiq but with red and access to spellslingan

Making my opponents dudes small doesn't help me kill my opponents that much. My guys usually connect, I just want to be able to close out games with combat damage.
>>
>>49887819
I mean, how many creatures does Shu Yun really run? It'll probably only ever be +2 or +3 power, which isn't bad, but it's also vulnerable to removal. I'm not a big fan of Archangel in a creature-light deck.

>"Hey guys, Derevi has his Glen Elendra Archmage + Sage of Fables combo to indefinitely combo non-creature spells... that's kinda bad for all of u-... no, you want to exile my graveyard..."

Look I know, I'm obviously in it to win it too. But I like to win in the Timmy-est way possible withall my decks. But wtf is with my group and their lack of threat detection, especially when That Guy (Derevi, usually) or someone is blatantly setting up an infinite combo or lockout...

When I think about it, my office playgroup and their threat assessment:

>That Guy: used to play cool but competitive decks, now just Derevi every time. Always chides me that my Ghostly Prison or whatnot was clearly the bigger threat that his infinite lockout. Likes to shut me down because I'm the only one trying to stop him.
>Female Spike: gets really salty when she isn't performing optimally. Because of this and the fact she is female, everyone is nice to her. She had a crush on me, but friendzoned her, so naturally tries to kill me first.
>IT dude: often has a shaky grasp of the rules, likes to single me out because I've crushed him a few times in duels.
>The contractor: quite the spike, probably has the best threat assessment though. Probably the most reliable to make sound decisions.

When I go to the FLGS, it's quite different though. Most the people there are co-workers or college roommates and will ignore my board to beat up on each-other.

To be fair, "Creates a perceived high barrier to entry due to high monetary cost" is one of the banlist criteria.

I'm not saying it's unanswerable, I'm just saying it's a fucking irritating card until you CAN answer it.

Red is your best bet for pumps and additional combat fun. Depending on your deck's tribe docent of perfection gives wizards +2/+1 and flying. Then kick rite of replicaton and get 7 of those and all of a sudden your flying wizards are swinging for +14/+7.

>I want to instantly win the game because I was able to cast a single spell on turn 3

>Creates a perceived high barrier to entry due to high monetary cost

But it doesn't, because it is not a staple. If you sat down at a FLGS and everyone was running one, that would hold true. But they're not. They mean that in the context of everyone running it, creating that perceived barrier. Its expense it very much in part due to the fact that it is also very old and few printings.

Similar effects can be attained easily (not to mention Pendrell Mists, Magus of the Tabernacle). Yeah, a land is harder to remove than an Enchantment or Creature, but as I established before: land removal really isn't that difficult. Not to mention it only really shuts down token strategies. Its effect is annoying at best versus Voltron, pointless against spellslinging or combo. It's hardly affecting the format.
>>
>>49886902
The only things I agree with on that list are the mana rocks and Gaea's Cradle

Everything else is bait/salt
>>
>>49888378
I think you mean

>>
>>49888383
>Land removal isn't that difficult
Personally I'd say in an average game of EDH, lands are the hardest-to-answer permanent type.

Not everyone -runs- land destruction, even if they could, but you can bet every deck that's able runs creature/artifact/enchantment removal.
>>
>>49888402
>I want to immediately win the game because nobody had a counterspell at this specific moment in time
There's an entire spectrum between "Combo out because nobody had Force of Will on turn 3" and "4 hour game of autism". Maybe I want my game to last an hour or so of actual back-and-forth interaction, instead of a 10 minute game of "4 players trying to force out a combo until someone breaks past the counterwall".
>>
>>49888378

>I let people win the game because, despite seeing their commander clear as broad daylight and knowing its strategy and likely course of action, I don't save the appropriate removal or counters for that moment.

That's like walking into a Modern tournament and being shocked and caught completely off-guard to see a popular Tier I archetype on the board.
>>
>>49888437
>It's my fault for not mulling to 2 hoping I get Force of Will, because instead of actually being allowed to play a game of Commander it's somehow my personal responsibility to police the asshole who brought Scion Hermit to a casual fuckaround game
>>
>>49888418
>immediately win the game
the chances of this happening in a four-player game with a non-stacked cascade are near zero, you salty cunt

the most common result of casting wanderer early is that i hit something irrelevant like a ramp spell, and a good creature like inferno titan

hardly backbreaking in a f o u r p l a y e r game with three people capable of countering or removing things

>force of will on turn 3
you're allowed to play lands before turn 3, my man
anything from dissolve to doom blade to swords to plowshares is good enough to put the muzzle on maelstrom wanderer for the most part

>b-but you still get two free spells
when you spend 8 mana it's hard not to get a very powerful effect in this format

>lands are the hardest-to-answer permanent type

That's true, but not THAT hard to remove. If you know your strategy can be shut down by a particular land, make sure you have some way to remove it. That's basic deckbuilding.

Maze of Ith shuts down Voltron strategies, so I throw some modest land removal in when I know I'm going to be relying on a single creature attacking.

As I said before, Tabernacle is most onerous against token strategies and is completely harmless against many others. Hardly justifiable for a banning.

Dear /edh/:

I have a Zendruu EDH deck, but I'd like to work on designing another deck (even though I don't get a chance to play very often). I understand metas can either be hyper-competitive or extremely lax and chill so I would like to have a deck suitable for both. For a second deck I would be interested in making Zur, the Enchanter, Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper, Phelddagrif, Uril, the Miststalker, or Teneb, the Harvester.

Does anyone have any opinions about which I should do?
