Well it seemed to be common knowledge amongst the Primarchs but something horrible. However, no one except the Emperor even knew what Chaos was so it probably wasnt directly related to that.

I always imagined one of them was raised by aliens and bonded poorly with the human first Imperium while another might have been mutated beyond acceptance.

Clearly Emps was okay with mentally deranged ones like Angron or Kurze, so itd have to be within the contemporary understanding and bad at the same time.

Though would gold work as their primary colour? Feels a bit off from the usual colours, best reserved for elites like Custodes and such. Maybe golden yellow with blue, rather than just plain gold. To be frank, having a 'sister' in the bunch probably would have solved a lot of problems. The other primarchs would have had someone to talk to about their problems without worrying about disappointing daddy or looking weak or shit like that. Basic jist of Wu:

Guy named Brian Wu wants to go into game design. Brian is also a closet Transgender, but goes through the procedures and such to become female. This is where things go horribly, horribly wrong.

Brian is not very good at game design, which you'll see if you look at Rev 60. In fact (s)he's horrendous at it. But the reason (s)he became so popular is because it was marketed as a game made by a transgender person. The game got Kickstarted based on a lot of things said and it began to have info released. This info and the screenshots were not recieved well by game critics.

This is where it should have ended, but it got worse. Instead of building on that criticism, Wu lashed out and called anyone who dared to criticize 'her' game as being transphobic and bigots. This caught the attention of /v/ and the witch hunts started on both sides. Wu got allies in other pro-quota game 'journalists' and /v/ got a surprise backing from /pol/.

There's supposed to be that idea that the primarchs all represent some aspect of emperor and way I see it they're missing a healer and a scientist. I've always liked the idea of one of the Primarchs being not effeminate, but definitely feminine. I could see a kind of hearth focused healer playing well in that roll, kind of as a softer and tragic counterpoint to all the grimdarkness. His strength would be rallying the common people and while his space marines wouldn't have been as noteworthy, many of the great non-astarte generals and admirals would flock to his side wanting to gain his favor.

Russ' notorious comments at having killed Astartes already would then refer to the healers marines. As warriors they might not like the idea of being under the command (and bassicly glorified bodyguards of) of a girly healer. Either on purpose, sabotage or by accident they let him get lost to the warp during a gellar field failure. The emperor, and his brothers get angry, real angry, and Rus kills the them all. lots of drama, lots of blood.
In my head the second one focused on high technology and theory as opposed to crafting the way his brothers did, and eventually dabbled in AI. and then it went to shit.And just like daddy dearest, he turns inward to focus on his research as a way to cope with the grief of losing his brother. With his execution (or his exile and fleeing imperial space) the myth of the invincible primarch is shattered as is the myth of the Emperor's benevolence to his children. That sets up the seeds of doubt and prepares the way for the Horus heresy.

If Samus has proved anything, outside of the really shitty games at least, is that chicks can conquer just as hard as the boys. A Samus scaled to primarch level with Empy genes with chozo muckery on top could probably hand pretty much any other primarch their ass on a silver platter.

Actually, it's heavily implied that the old ones, like THE old ones, used this world as their creche-world to try and save their species. They built arcane machines that blocked Chaos from getting in. After thousands of years, when the old-ones had devolved into mockeries of what they once were who were incapable of actually understanding their ancestors' technology, the wards became less efficient, and let a little leak through at the north and south poles. The "chaos" that the creche-world experiences is only a leak, whereas the 40k universe is exposed to the deluge.

Now that wasn't even totally accurate during the Great Crusade, see: The Legion of Sieging Things and The Legion of Beating Besieging armies.
While much of what they do /is/ act as the tip of the spear the real point of the marines was to handle missions/combat zones that regular troops couldn't. Much of that falls under the 'shock troops' approach but there's more to it than that. Especially come M41 where the Imperium has been founding chapters for thousands of years there's plenty that either were created for, or shifted into, specialised niques.
So if you want to make a chapter with a ranged combat specialty then go for it. Sternguard focus anyone?
