Let me ask you this, is it just has bad to play has a European knight in a feudal japan setting as it is playing a ninja in a medieval European setting?

Also post paladins or armored knights. I love me some armored knights.
>>
>>49862144
No, because knights are cool and playing as glorious european slaughtering inferior shit sissy chinks is fun.
>>
>>49862144
> ninja
> a pussy assassin that kills people with poison in your tea or dagger in your sleep

>knight

Are you my DM? Because I'm playing a European knight in feudal japan in a pathfinder campaign
>>
>>49862198
>knight is all about the Crusades
What
>>
It really depends on the setting. Is there a lot of travel in the world (or at least enough that a knight could get to !Japan)? Why exactly is the knight there? Is the GM OK with it?
There are probably other things but those are the main ones really.

>Ninja
>A trained assassin who uses subterfuge and the element of surprise to gather information first and foremost, kick ass second

>Knight
>A sworn warrior of the lower nobility that prefers fighting on horseback and is fiercely loyal to his liege

Both Europe and Japan have their equivalents of both. If the setting is either entirely (pseudo-)European or (pseudo-)Japanese, and there's no real contact between these spheres of influence (for example, Portuguese traders during the Sengoku Jidai), then you're a dick for insisting on playing a character that does not fit the setting. Playing a Portuguese man-at-arms in a Sengoku Jidai campaign is perfectly legit though. Or whatever not!European colonial power is messing around in not!Japan.

Play the setting you're given first and foremost.

>>49862241
OP here, I was actually curious because I've always hear about people complaining about anime in europe, but not the reverse. Just wanted to know what's the opposite side reacted to. Also ,I would love story time.
>>
>>49862241
way better than chafe your toothpick at a plate armour
>>
>>49862269
Well, the Crusades were the most fun part of medieval.

It's like the japs and their Sengoku era and how they never seem to be able to shut up about it.

Seems only fair for us to focus on the Crusades.
>>
>>49862317
>It's like the japs and their Sengoku era and how they never seem to be able to shut up about it.
But that era was the unification of Japan, making it more important to them than the Crusades to most European countries, which were mostly a fringe conflict. The closest equivalent would be the Hundred Years War, and even then it's the English who never shut up about it. Not the French who actually won it (and in a way unified their nation through it).
>>
>>49862293
There isn't one yet, I only just submitted it to my DM hence why I was curious of your coincidentally timed post

Not if there's a reason for you to be there.
Like acting as an envoy or knight errant in a distant land.
There's also no problem playing a samurai/ninja in a Not!Europe setting as long as there's a reason to be there.

>lrn2imagine
>>
>>49862293
In general, if your GM wants to run campaign in japan or containing japanese elements it's a huge red flag.
>>
>>49862434
Not really.
Japanese mythology can be used for some pretty cool stuff without being a complete anime shitfest.
>>
>>49862458
No it cannot. European mythology has everything japanese mythology has and it does it better.
>>
>>49862490
> European mythology
>has everything japanese mythology has and it does it better.
You mean Greko-Roman, right?
>>
>>49862499
Greek mythology is acceptable.
>>
>>49862532
Ehh...i feel like Greek Mythology is over-exposed at this point.
>>
Not at all because knights are awesome, and, unless his name is jack, your samurai's probably no where near as cool as him.
>>
>>49862490
>no it cannot
>the only thing that you should use is what I like
You must be fun to play with.
>>
>>49862643
Not what I like, but what /tg/ likes.

There should be definitive list of acceptable races, settings and cultures so we won't have to tell another weeb shit that his bullshit setting folded a thousand times is a blight upon roleplaying.

You could play a knight I guess, but you'd be drastically underpowered.
Realistically a katana would cut through a knight's armor like butter, and the samurai would be much more disciplined.

A middle eastern class of professional soldiers, bought and trained as slaves, they often became a pseudo-lower nobility and in some cases overthrew the kingdoms they served and established their own dynasties.

The Mamelukes even kicked the Mongols ass a few times.

>>
>>49862144
Yes, barring the same kind of saving graces that would actually make a Samurai make sense in not-1350's not-France/England, it would be exactly as bad.

Playing James Sunderland in a party composed of Dante, Bayonetta, Kratos and Ashura is as bad as playing Dante in a party of Silent Hill and Clock Tower protagonists. Playing a Roman Centurion in a Wu Xia campaign is as bad as playing a magic-ass Shaolin Monk in a Roman campaign. It's not about what's overdone, it's about deliberately making a character that doesn't fit the tone of the game.
>>
>>49862144
>>49862293
In general it depends on how it's handled. If the player wants their character's Japaneseness/Euopeanness to be an advantage or expects some kind of inherent advantage, then it's an issue. But if they don't expect special treatment then it's fine.

I actually find playing a character who is a fish out of water interesting. There are many good role playing opportunities: attempting to blend-in, picking-up some of the local customs, finding similarities between your character's people and theirs, etc.

The usual issue that comes-up is that the player eschews these opportunities in favor of the mere novelty of being a special snowflake.
