What is the strongest threat that a mob of peasants could defeat with the Ol' "Pitchforks and Torches" method?

That depends on the number of peasants. I'd say for your average mob of about 25-30 people, a challenge rating 3-4 would be the most they could handle without scattering.
>>
>>49840531

A troll, whose relatively high threat rating is mitigated by a fear of and weakness to fire.

It's a mob. Someone is bound to get lucky and stab a bitch in the eyes or burn a grimoire.

A Vampire.
>>

How big is this angry mob, a mob made up of something like 4 billion people would be able to kill pretty much anything while a mob of like 10 people would only be able to get some smaller to average sized monsters

A colossal Hay Golem
>>
>>49840636
If your question is mechanics-wise, it heavily depends on game and edition. In 5e bounded accuracy/AC makes it possible to mob dragons, while in 3.5 they can't get through AC and DR.
This is ignoring other abilities of dragons, though.
>>
>>49840619

How the fuck did it happen ?
>>
>>49840730
I want to know as well. Someone post some fluff?!
>>
>>49840636
but only a small part of 4 billion can surround you at any given time, and threats strong enough can beat that easily. rinse and repeat.

and if the threat can level, then with 4 billions peasants, even if every peasant was worth 1xp any threat in any game would level up to godlike status during the fight and be actually unstoppable.
>>
>>49840792
Well, most beings need to rest and sleep at some point. And there's of course the possibility of burying your opponent under a mountain of corpses too, I think you're underestimating the weight of 4 billion peasants.
>>
>>49840531
If the entire able bodied population of a village, say 90-110 peasants, most with torches and pitchforks, some with spears and bows (common hunting tools) were to go up against any number of threats, they could probably put a dent in it. A smaller foe would be trouble because they'd have less ability to maneuver around it and entrap it. A larger threat, though, they can surround better. Keep in mind, pitchforks and spears are reach weapons, so if you've got those guys a square back, plus an immediate surrounding of guys with clubs and torches and sickles and machetes:
for a Medium foe that's 25 flanking enemy attack actions
for a Large foe that's 32 flanking enemy attack actions
for a Huge foe that's 40 flanking enemy attack actions

Past that, typical medium humanoids can pass through the foe's occupied squares, meaning that the even larger number of flanking attack actions (48 is as far as I got, I don't know what it would be for colossal) are in addition to the 16 guys inside your squares attacking you as they please. Which raises an even more pressing question as to whether you can flank from inside someone's space. I feel like this is something that would have come up, but I've never had to deal with it. Did the errata or the rules wizards ever cover that?

Anyways, this is a mob of 20-50 generally average people who are all using weapons they're proficient with and who are getting flanking bonuses against you, plus however many of them are armed with ranged weapons. Sure, it's the mother of all melees they're firing into and they probably didn't want to invest two feats into precise shot... though, on the upside, they're humans so at least they might have the opportunity. Speaking of opportunity, probability suggests that every round between 1 and 2 enemies flanking you is threatening a crit.

In other words, anything that doesn't have an area of effect attack.
>>
>>49840824

I think that's a problem with a lot of games introducing a power-floor that's too high.

It's the reason why we have the 'cats kill commoners' meme in 3e dnd. Within a rules framework that sets the human average as the minimum, it's not possible to set cats or squirrels low enough that their threat level is accurately portrayed.
>>
>>49840824
That only works for roughly human-like opponents. 4 billion peasants versus Godzilla is not going to go well for the peasants.
>>
>>49844554
Werewolves zombies vampires geists etc are all an average day, in addition to regional threats like mad science gone wrong or giant frogs.

>>49840825
Thanks for the numbers, anon.

Games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne represent this sort of stuff fairly well, I've found. Even with superhuman levels of durability you're still vulnerable to being fucked apart by shit farmers with pointy sticks, just from them hitting you repeatedly from your blind spots.

Basically, any single threat that would survive would need 1 of 3 things.

>AOE attacks like fire breath.

>Ability to summon backup

>Teleportation-level manuverability that ignores the mob body-blocking.

Depends entirely on the morale of the peasants, system rules aside.

A horde of peasants with a huge numerical advantage would still probably run away if whatever they're fighting was doing enough killin'/scary enough, but a mob of peasants with absolutely 0 fear due to being charmed, being robo-peasents/hive mind peasents (again probably magical bullshit), or out of desperation to save their homes could kill just about anything mundane, though probably with massive losses on their side.
>>
>>49848763

>>
>>49842860
Maybe if they all attacked at once.

Even then they'd need to outnumber it at least 100:1
>>
>>49840531
Most of anything that can't fly, and dosen't have energy resistance, and moderate DR. Even with high AC, criticals still hit, and with the right sized mob, assuming they're all suicidal/willing to die to kill the thing, they'll eventuall ywear it down. Fire to get past low energy reduction(torches),and pitchfork spam to hurt something with 5 DR or less. Given enough time, and space, they'll do it.

Let's assume d20 rules
4 billion peasents, that means roughly
200 million of them will hit.
This will have an average damage of 1d6 for their weapons which is 3.5 damage a hit on average.
This would be an average of 700 million damage a turn.
Even if you killed 50% of them with an opening attack that would still be 350 million damage.
>>
>>49861396
that assumes that all 4 billion are in range for an attack at once

>>49861512

>>
In the real world there is such a thing as morale. The mob will eventually break if enough people die.

In a game world like dnd eventually the mob just doesnt do enough damage regardless of size since they cant get trough damage reduction.
>>
>>49861531
around 10 million of them should crit, they should crit for somewhere around 13.5 damage, so with dr 10/magical they would do around 35 million damage.
Also, yes they could all easily be in range because throwing exists. They are already fishing for crits anyways to hit so they would not have any penalties from doing this aside from needing to pick up a fallen pitchfork every round to throw it once more until all the pitchforks break, all the peasants are dead or their foe is dead.

Given a few dozen peasants they could probably scare off quite a few baddies who just dont want to take the chance getting overwhelmed. 30 able bodied men could easy drive off an ogre or nest of ghouls for instance.

The problem is that if peasants start dying the group is going to scatter very fast. They aren't trained soldiers and while they may be tough and able bodied men, if a troll decides to charge in attack the mob is going to break almost immediately once they see the first couple men get mauled.
