>Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis, and the rise of the sons of Fargo, there was an age undreamed of. And unto this, Sláine, destined to wear the Horned Crown of Carnun upon a scarred brow. It is I, his chronicler, who alone can tell thee of his saga. Let me tell you of the days of high adventure!
When we left Slaine in >>49715579, the Celtic barbarian hero of 2000AD had just been cast forward in time by the druidic mages of Snowdonia to fight at the Battle of Clontarf. There he would face Elfric the Changeling, a three-eyed sorcerer demon who sought to tip the macrocosmic balance of good and evil in the favour of the Cythrons, alien monsters attempting to escape their prison by tunnelling through time using mighty worm-gods.
It’s a bit of weird one, to say the least.
More than just a Celtic twist on the archetypal barbarian adventurer, Slaine puts forward an imaginative fusion of ideas which could be useful to GMs and players of a wide variety of fantasy games. It is also the has its own RPG, which comes in D20 or Runequest flavours, if one wants to experience the Land of the Young first-hand. Rackham Confrontation's Drunes and Sessairs also show a clear debt to the series, although given the defunct nature of the company the model ranges are a lot harder to find these days

Also that's an Atlantean Ley-ser gun he's using in the op image. It fires a beam of pure earth power channeled from Ley-lines or stored in earthworks and barrows. Normally Slaine would use his axe, Brainbiter, but he broke it trying to cave in a dragon's diamond skull.
I love the effect of the exploding chainmail to represent how deadly Elfric's eyebeam is.
What a twist!
The Lord Weird Slough Feg, for anyone just joining us, is an ancient evil druid lord (or "Drune") who has plagued our heroes for some time. He and his Drunes drain the power of the earth to sustain themselves, transforming it into a barren wasteland filled with abominations, and twisting their bodies into rotting, skinless monstrosities. Feg worships the Time Worm Crom Cruach and the Dark Gods of Cythrawl.
I'm not sure quite sure where to put this next bit, as it was originally published in an annual rather than in the progs week to week, but it covers the battle from a slightly different perspective and explains a tiny bit about a character Slaine's about to meet properly. Its only four pages if you want to skip it.
Back to the main story, with delightful Valkyries-weaving-using-decapitated-heads centrepiece.
I'm fairly certain this entire storyline was born from dreadful bits of wordplay like that.
"Pluke" is a Scots word with uncertain origins for a giant spot or boil.
That last panel shouldn't make me laugh as much as it does.
Good grief. Not sure if I should be censoring that or not.
Anyone reading along?
>>49730207
I just checked in man, Slaine is a fucking classic.
>>49730237
Aces, was beginning to get a bit lonely in here!
From a practical standpoint its also a lot harder to stop the thread slipping off the board if its just me.
>She's only an animal, she doesn't have any rights.
Subtle commentary as ever, Mr Mills.
No, it's not possible, etc. etc.
Also not sure if that's the first instance of tele-fragging ever on that last page. Certainly the first one I remember.
>>49729753
>Toe-strangle in panel 3
He can kill with his TOES.
>>49730546
I love that the demon he's strangling looks more impressed than anything else.
I'm pretty sure the hexegram design on Nest's new ring is based on a real magic design, incidentally, but I can't find it right now. It might be a mish-mash of different things.
Oh no!

That's all I've got in me for tonight

Hoping to be able to do more tomorrow morning though, particularly because the next stories have also been written to work as Choose Your Own Adventures. Sort of, anyway.
Hope people are enjoying it so far.

Keep going, OP! And thanks.

Thanks man, I'm still reading the backlog, t'were a good dump.
>>49730325
>Subtle
Hey, "subtle" is for nerds who can't do "awesome!"
Man, this comic got weird quick.
>>49732610
I like to think of it as going Full Mills, because it happens a lot in his stories, even the ones that were pretty weird to start with. ESPECIALLY the ones that were pretty weird to start with.
Got some bits and bobs to do first, but should be able to do the next bit relatively soon.
>>49729457
Haven't commented that much. But thank you, these are a pleasure to come back to at the end of the day.
Okey dokey smokey, let's get this show on the road with this anon's >>49713244 recommended story, THE TOMB OF TERROR!
>>49735293
I'm really glad you're enjoying them, but please feel free to comment. It breaks up the story a bit, I guess, but it tells me that there's any interest at all and keeps the thread bumped. I also never know if I'm overdoing it with the commentary or lame jokes otherwise.
This story has a little adventure game attached to each chapter, so get ready with pencils, paper and two six-sided dice each!
Ready?
With a bit of work these would make good tokens for stuff like roll20.
Just discovered I was missing some pages here, it should be complete now.
No cheating to see what happens before you make your choices now!

Right, back on track.
Dungeon creature tactic #4256
Oeahoo is enjoying being manhandled entirely too much.
...annnnd just in under the wire the game bit for this episode. We're just about half way through here, so I'll pause to get lunch and finish it off in the next thread.
Time Killer is still my favourite Slaine things. It's just gloriously weird. Thanks Shakaranon.

>That "The Shining" face tho
I did not know this comic turned so trippy. I have only read one complete Slaine story before, "Demon Killer" or something like that.
There was a monthly magazine here in Brazil for some time called "Judge Dredd Megazine". They featured famous stories of Judge Dredd, but what was cool about it was that it also featured 2001AD classics like Slaine and Nikolai Dante.
Too bad they stopped publishing it.
>>49737838
The Megazine is the monthly equivalent to 2000AD, it usually does some reprints alongside new strips. It's still going on the UK, likely they just stopped the translation.
Slaine really has the best boasts.
>>49736140
Sorry, would commment more. Just reading this between shifts.
Is there somewhere that has all the old, obscure 2000AD stuff? Was trying to find Trashman Trask the other day, and it completely stumped me.
I enjoyed the comic better when it had no layser guns and evil aliens.
>>49739083
Oh man, really? I love that in Slaine. One thing I think Slaine does really well from the start that it doesn't get credit for is it very clearly builds up a setting. Like you could read a couple of Slaine strips and RP someone in Slaine's world, along with the hack-n-slash you get the value system of a (really two) pseudo-Celtic societies in a world of mythic Britain/Europe.
Plunging that into twisted New Age stuff that itself rips off the mythic Celtic stuff Slaine is ripping off is a weird meta-twist that I think blends just fine with the whole slightly sardonic thing in the first place.
>celts depicted as the ultimate warrior race descended form atlanteans
If somebody made a comic depicting slavs as such total badasses, everybody it the thread would be making fun of it.
>>49739272
I dunno, I'd read that.

OTP
Sorry for taking so long again anons, its been one of those days. I also realised I got the post count and image count mixed up, so there's a bit more life in this thread yet.
>>49737838
Demon Killer is one of the later ones yeah, its about Slaine helping the Boudica and the Iceni tribes of East Anglia fight off Roman aggressors and their demonic allies. Maybe I'll be able to do it, but if I can't I'll post you a link at the very least. If you don't mind me asking was the Megazine in your native language? I know there was some effort in the 90s to publish a few of the more popular book collections in languages other than English.
>>49738626
Slough Feg has some good ones too.
>>49738830
Don't feel obliged or anything, just commenting that I enjoy the company!
>>49738970
For 2000AD stuff BARNEY can be really helpful if you know some details about what you're looking for. Its not the most well-laid out site unfortunately, and its not quite up to speed with the latest stories but with some luck you should be able to find almost all the older stuff.
http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=thrill&page=profiles&choice=TRASHAlthough to be absolutely honest I had to google that to find it on Comic Vine then work backwards from there
Might be able to help you out a bit more then that too, stay tuned.
>>49739083
You'll be pleased to know the next major arcs are a return to more traditional hideously violent adventures. I'm closer to >>49739130 myself, as I find this bonkers diversion into neo-pagan beardy-weirdy mysticism can be quite refreshing.
>>49739272
I'd read it. Could be awesome. Hell, why not submit it to 2000AD as a short story?
I'm still catching up so won't chat much but thanks for posting again, Shakaranon.
New thread over here >>49741000 (with Goddess-blessed trips, even)
and for the anon >>49738970 I've extracted what I think might be the only Trashman Trask story from the original progs (along with a couple of vintage Sega ads I thought you might get a kick out of)

Fair dues to you, and much appreciated. It must be almost thirty years since I last read that Clontarf issue and I could still recall the artwork.
So is this the same guy who was in the adventure when he traveled to fight Romans, then find King Arthur's treasures?
>>49741639
He didn't think it too much.
>>49741639
That's the fella. He does eventually return to the tribes of the Earth Goddess and can currently be found battling the evil Drune Lords for the soul of Albion
