Rod.

It's not a piddly little fucking twig like a wand.
Or an "overcompensating" sized cubersome branch like a staff.

Also, have it built right and you can smack a bitch with it.
Not for combat mind you, but education.

For wizards, a sword. If Gandalf, Sabriel and Gryffindor can do it so can you. Plus if you run out of magic, you still have a sword.

For magic users in general, I'm a fan of totemic fetishes, and bags of runes. One is a magical focus, the other is as well but you can throw them at people or try to divine the future or something.
Plus you can make them hover around you like ioun stones if you want to look flashy.

You have to wonder about Suchong at times. "I've made telekinetic powers, lightning bolts, and I'm working on a super reaction time plasmid.. I know! I'll make one that shoots BEES. That is clearly a good idea and makes sense."
It's.. where do the bees come from? Plasmids explanation is they rewrite your genetics, makes about as much sense as the X-men but whatever. But that doesn't explain the bees. Are they your little insect children? Do you summon bees to infest you?
>>
>>49720195

Magical foci are loot. Don't think of them as a weakness, because most arcane spells can be cast without one. They enhance your magic, and some can give you access to spells you wouldn't otherwise be able to learn.
Are there max-level mages whose raw power and breadth of knowledge makes any equipment redundant? Perhaps, but you have to get to that point one level at a time.
It's extremely rare to find a +1 bare hand in a treasure chest, and if you do, it's not easy to equip.

Giving out powerful magic items that require you to cut off body parts to use is an awesome thing to do to your players.

I also really enjoy cursed items that slowly consume/replace a limb, while also gradually giving you more powers. Bonus points if the limb turns to stone or something whenever the item is not equipped.

A nomal if slightly decorated sword. Literally every form of magic that uses a generic mystical pointy thing as a catalyst works well with something of that description. Holy white beams that heal the living and harm the dead? Point a shining sword with prayers inscribed in the hilt and fire them from the point. Enchantment generating a smouldering black aura that curses all flesh it touches? Put it on the blade of a sinister black sword, perhaps with a specially made fuller to collect fuel for blood rituals. Why anyone would use a bland wooden stick is beyond me.
>>
>>49720195
Magical floating orbs or crystals.
>>
>>49722732
You can hide a stick up your sleeve. They're also incredibly portable.

I imagine that the average city wizard usually uses their wand because of that feature. It's like you COULD carry a heavy case filled with all your tools when you're just mooching around the town... or you just slip a utility knife in your pocket and not bother with all that stuff.
Staves and rods are both heavy and cumbersome in the mundane but also arcane sense. You have to channel and maintain vast amounts of energy to keep them ready for you to use. So for the wizard who's not an adventurer and more of a scholar, why wouldn't you just use a wand for the day to day stuff? Bringing out your staff when shit gets real and you want to remind everyone you're not just some dabbler in the Art.

And from there, the average Joe sees the court wizard in his finery and a delicate wand.. and the adventuring wizard with his stout travelling robes and staff. Well, clearly the really posh wizard is the better one right? Otherwise the adventuring one would settle down and wear nice clothes.
So Joe just thinks that wands a sign of a master wizard and staffs for novices. He's wrong, but the idea catches on and suddenly it's fashionable.
>>
Staff:
- staves are obvious phallic symbols, especially with knobs on the end; gnarly and thick staff relates to magical potency
- staves have great reach
- hits with a staff can crack heads easily
- and also trip enemies
- you can pole vault with a staff
- a staff can be enchanted into artifact of great power
- a staff can often be used as a lever
- cunning wizard could carve some lifesaving spell on his staff, since it easily has more surface than a spellbook page
- limping wizard could use his staff for support
- he could also attach a dagger to the end of his staff - he now has a spear
- he could attack other pointy bits and make a halberd

>>
>>49722853
I'd say it depends on what your going for. If you're a sensible wizard with the resources nessesary, you might use a small wand. If you're a more Unseen Academy kind of wizard, who wouldn't perform a legendarily powerful ritual with two sticks and an egg when you could use heavy metal instruments, salt diagrams and a lot of arcane chanting, you probably would rather not. If you may beshouting to your pheonix mount "Fly me closer, I want to hit them with my sword!" in the forseeable future, it's only good practice to bring a powerful magical artefact sword to cast spells from and leave the twig of subtlety at home.

Essentially, if it's a spell that you'd be forgiven for making 'SWOOSH! FWOOM!' noises while casting, it's probably best with a sword, if it's minor presdigitation at best a wand is good too. But really, who becomes a wizard to cast Leomund's Fluffy Socks?

Spellbooks basically ~are~ the idea of magic, or at least "magic you can imagine", which is how most ancient cultures interpreted it. Magic has usually been all about hidden knowledge, learning, and secret truths about how the universe functions and how it can be manipulated. In Egypt, writing itself was treated like magic.
>>
>>49723600
What about a huge metalbound grimoire that the irate old wizard visibly beats a person half to death with in a show of pure contempt? It's not quite as 'mafia-boss'ish but it's about as menacing to see I bet.

If I remember correctly, there was some feat in 3.5e that allowed wizards to make their staff a familiar.

For witches: first you impregnate yourself with magical ingredients, then you eat lots of mana filled food. After an hour/years depending on the complexity and the power of the witch you birth a magical blob/creature/baby that you can burn/eat/crush/throw to cast the spell/.

Oh yeah, everything you described is staff territory.
But if your daily agenda is "eat nice food, study books and maybe advise some shit for brain nobles or royalty about magic" then it's wand time.

Like a warrior just grabbing a big ol' dagger or small sword for walking around town. He's an expert blades master so he's not going to go without, but putting on his armor and carrying a longsword is just too much hassle.

Also I will fucking fight you for the chance to become a wizard JUST for that spell. I will cast fuzzy socks every night. You have no idea how good clean warm fluffy socks can feel and getting them fresh would be heavenly.
I will become a wizard just so I can conjure mustard to my food if I think it could use some mustard.

Wholly depends on your type of mage. Mixtures aren't uncommon.

Wands are general purpose.
Staves are for potent and immediate focusing, such as blasting magic.
Scepters are more suited to enchanters and artificers, with their large but slow-flowing mana reserves.
Cauldrons, crucibles, and chalices are used between blood mages, witches, and alchemists (though the latter can hardly be called a mage at all).
Bells, censers, smoking pipes, talismans, orbs, crystals, skulls, and many other forms are not unheard of, due to the many magical traditions out there.

I have found it a valuable tactic in social communities to appear a little eccentric.

that staff has earned me free sushi, excused parking tickets, granted me access to buildings I should NOT have had access to, it got me my own personal informally reserved table at a local restaurant and an extra egg on my steak and eggs every Saturday morning for the last 3 years.

that, and I got used to carrying it everywhere as a personal good-luck symbol, it's been over mountains and under them it has been my eyes for a 3 mile walk down an unlit lava-tube. I smacked a small bear in the face with it and when my ingrown toenails act up I lean on it, I've won billiard games in college bars that netted me free drinks all night.

that handle was bleached white cotton string when I made it...

I always liked the idea that spells all need some sort of cooking-like preparation and then are stored in bottles. Similar to what Alchemists would be like in most fantasy settings but a bit more fantastical like literally being able to bottle up void, sunlight, hell even a teleportation spell if you cook up the essence of a specific place.

So uh, potions.

I like to think that the original multiwand was just bundle of different wands lashed together with a strap on the top.

After the first time it was used, the party made the Wizard keep hold of it and refined the design into something that a bit less spray-n-pray.

Now the standard model is pretty much a Magical shotgun. It comes in two halves: the Stock, which holds the charge and has a locking brace fitted to it, and the firing head which is a metal holder with up to 50 narrow lengths fixed into it (the lengths each have a the runes for a single shot of a specific spell carved into them, but not the actual runes for storing a magical charge).

When the Multiwand is fired a charge stored in the stock will travel through the brace and holder and be released out of all the individual lengths, as the lengths are not designed for anything more than one shot the holder will need to be swapped out for a new one once the energy has been discharged (thought if whatever you just blasted could survive the experience, reloading wouldn't really be an issue.)

doesn't that depend on how you define them? any author can define any of the three as the best in their universe as they wish (or make them all equal, for that matter)

i guess you also have to define "best": does that mean availability, accessibility, utility, reusability, cost, materials required to fabricate, time to fabricate, power, weight, size, power density, reliability, packing, or some combination of these? of course, all of these qualities and more are again up to the author, so it's still arbitrary

No, what you do is take a staff and a bunch of wands, and you bind all the wands together, facing the same way, at the top end of the staff.

Once you have it, you go on 4chan and shitpost until someone uses the word 'faggot' with reference to one of your posts. Then you take your staff, stick it wand-end-first through the internet and out their monitor, and utter the line "Noob, this is a faggot" as you blast them to eldritch locations unknown to mere mortals.

You could use an axe in the middle instead, but Not!Roman judges would accuse you of misrepresenting your authority. (Blasting them to realms unknown is still a viable option!)

Have the wizards weave their magic into their robes and hat?

Make the beard hold the essence of power? For anyone who complains, long hair suffices in general; the location may affect the magic's capabilities, though

Figurines? Dolls? 'Action figures'? Remember that one guy with the uncomfortable number of dolls all over his wall? He's an archmage.

Wands for my casual, day to day stuff. Animating the furniture and yard tools to till the garden and do light cleaning, sparking flames in the hearth, the small, minor stuff that doesn't take all that much focus or effort, but needs just a little push beyond the ol' finger waggle. Folks are also less likely to flip out at you when you are just using a little wand to do paltry magic for them. A little light, some sound, and they'll be awed by you, but not fearful of you. Unlike some tower hermits, I LIKE dealing with the mundane on a day to day basis. They can offer insights, and some of their little folk rituals have a seed of magic in them.

When it comes time for the bigger spells at home, I like to use rods. Just the right size, good for clubbing unruly imps, and isn't as unwieldy when I need to pull out reagents or flip through tomes.

Staves are reserved for when I need all my power at my finger tips. When you have two meters of wood and crystal that literally throbs with energy, it's a waste to not put that to it's full potential. Out adventuring, during very risky rituals, or when I need to dissuade the next group of bandits from raiding my little town.

Really, the problem with all you "One stick or no stick" assholes is you have no humility or versatility. Too set in stone, and unable to change or humble yourself.

There is no such thing as an all in one tool. You can't fit every single sort of focus, material, totem, rune, and every other sort of good little magical tuning device onto your single tool. And if you did, how would they effect one another?

No, much better to have a full set for every little thing than trying to make due with a single tool. When you are traveling, it's best to take your broadest sort, but honestly, are you always traveling? Do you not have somewhere to settle down after a thrilling adventure and return to your studies?
>>
>>49734168
