The internet, and indeed everything digital, has become less and less anonymous as more and more people have started using it. You'd figure it'd be the other way around, but normalfags aren't smart. if you live in a reasonably large and reasonably modern city you do. You can spend all night in your VR system in your slum apartment, getting onto the public metro link to go to your corporate drone job and grabbing mass produced chemical food from the corp outlet.

Have you actually seen modern technology? Everyone has a cyberdeck, it's just a standard issue drones deck. In five years you'll probably have AR systems tethered to your deck if you want it, in ten I'd expect them to be fairly bog standard.

You already live in a cyberpunk world, you just happen to be one of the corporate wage slaves.

Most of the first world spends an astonishing amount of time on computers, facebook, google, or youtube being all they know of the internet. With such a limited and narrow viewpoint, their awareness and knowledge becomes increasingly little and ill-informed. Corporations do not control everything in a person's life, no, but they are working on it and well on their way. The internet is owned by the UN now, after all. That means any comment which could be against, say, an influx of so many arabic migrants, or a certain government policy of letting men into women's bathrooms, could be construed as hate speech. Which, if another person so desired or was paid to do it, they could report such a comment to one of many police groups, which would land the former person in a jail with an unreasonable bail without a trial, merely for stating an opinion against their government deemed illegal.

Corporations and governments don't own everything, no, but they are working hard for it to be so, and they are well on their way. The only thing preventing them from already doing so is the good old-fashioned human refusal to bow your head, and righteous anger.

In Shadowrun terms yeah, your smartphone is your commlink, your laptop/tablet is your deck.

In real life of course there's no clear delineation between a commlink and a deck, they're different specialisations of the same software and hardware. As per Shadowrun you can get laptops and tablets with their own SIM slots that can form a PAN with other devices, but in real life there's no clear divide between the two devices.

The other difference bbetween Shadowrun and real life is of course that an individual decks power in real life simply doesn't matter because our networks and attacks aren't built the same way.
