Just look up the fey myths of Scandinavia.

In most Scandinavian folklore, the "troll" was the all purpose fey, and take many forms. In Peer Gynt (which is inspired by Norwegian folklore, but isn't an Edda or anything, but still very traditional) a troll court contains enormous mountain kings, goblin-like courtiers, hags, and one very beautiful troll princess. They were changelings, of a sort.

From what I remember, all stories are about him seeking fortune or doing deeds that the king put a bounty on.

Had to look up the story where he comes across the old hag with her nose stuck in the tree stump, since I remember he helped her out, after his brother just passed her by. But turns out, he helped her out after she promised to do him a favor in return. And in return, she gives him a flute that always returns to his possession if he loses it, which he then "sells" to various cuties after negotiating ridiculous sums of money and kisses for it.

So yeah, while he's supposed to be a heroic figure who usually does good in the world, he's totally self-serving.
