Despite this being /polshit, I'll give you a legit answer:
The Orcs are turned into the nation's military shock troops. Their clans live in small, unfortified settlements under the protection of human castles. Upon coming of age, all Orcs must do at least ten years of military service to the Kingdom
The Orcs are semi-autonomous within their own settlements, but must turn over all military gear upon returning from service. They have their own methods of adjudicating disputes, but must submit to human law in disputes that may arise with humans.
Orcs are still legally considered to be humans, and their testimony is weighed in the same manner as a human's.
Humans have relatively little contact with the Orcs, aside from administrators and physicians who maintain the health of the Orc populace. Orc Cohorts are always commanded by human officers, who endeavor to earn their Orc charge's respect through feats of strength and bravery.
Thus within an Orc settlement, you generally have a large number of children, a moderate number of married veterans, and a small number of elders, and almost no Orcs of fighting age.

I do this but with humans and gnomes as the scheming race. Because no one ever suspects the gnomes.

But literally there is always a large amount of gnomes in positions of power in my settings even though they have a relatively smaller population. I didn't even realize I was doing this until now. The subconscious mind is a hell of a drug. Fuck.

Better solution:
Recruit unemployed orcs into military.
Sell them cheaply-built but good quality houses after they leave the military.
Build schools and other public services in the area to minimise poverty and educate orc kids.
Encourage businesses to set up shop there with subsidies, so educated orc kids can work for legitimate businesses.
Orcs now have jobs and do less crime.

Elves are understandable since there's plenty of mythological precedent going back millenia for similar beings which authors can draw upon, orcs were literally made up as a plot device for a particular story from a few decades ago. The only reason they became so common is how creatively bankrupt the whole fantasy genre has become.

I tend to prefer hobgoblins to Orcs but I do really like the potential dynamic between Elves and Humans.

I feel like Elves would work really well with a caste system.

So elves end up kind of like the opposite of humans in generic fantasy. While humans are generalists, elves are cripplingly specialized. An average elf soldier might be able to surpass the greatest human swordsmen but might be borderline illiterate or have no knowledge of the arcane or the cultures of other countries. A human soldier might be no match for the elf in terms of swordsmanship but he can read, write, knows how to behave around people of other classes and races, can grow crops, knows history, and can learn magic. The end result could be humans tend to be better at classes that rely on multiple skills (eg. magic and fighting) while elves tend to be better at classes that involve complete specialization (like fighter or wizard as opposed to eldritch knight).

When their service is over, give them some of that conquered lands as a bonus so they'll settle there.

You now :

- have culled the herd for a generation, making sure they won't be too many orcs.

- have weakened your neighbour's army, making sure he won't be in shape to invade for some time.

- have created a buffer at your border, so that if the neighbour invades, he'll only pillage orc villages and kill orc families. The invaders are culling the herd some more for you.

- have created a buffer at your border AND IT'S POPULATED BY VETERAN SOLDIERS protecting their families. If the neighbour invades, he'll lose a fair amount of troops.

Even if the initial conquest fails, that will still result in a lot of dead enemy soldiers or at least a lot of dead orcs, which is good.

Taking 5e as an example, if you look at the ages the races live it matches up pretty well.

So you would likely see elves having the same emotional connection to humans as we have to our pets. It could be strong, but it would be twinned with the knowledge that 'it is just a dog' and will not live that long. There would be a sort of distance in the relationship.

You might even see humans prized as 'friends' in the same way as we prize dogs as pets. You might have elves who like to have a human 'friend' for their kid or something. To help them understand mortality or to have the kind of loyalty 'that only a human shows'. That sort of thing.

Unless you're constantly pushing your borders out, this doesn't work.

If you settle barbarians on the frontier, they don't assimilate. They do something far worse: they recreate their own social order INSIDE your kingdom.

Once you start conquering outside your borders, you either keep going and radiate out to conquer the world or you begin you slide into decay. Only when a people feel like they're part of an ever growing core of your people do they actually adopt your culture. If they feel peripheral, they revert to their old ways.

Not really. Elves in DnD only live until about 750, so about 10 times longer than humans. While that is a huge difference an elf who meets and marries a human will still probably have a good 30-50 years of marriage or about 1/25ths of their life. While it isn't long for the elf it is the same as about 3-5 years for a human which is longer than most dating relationships and longer than some marriages. It is more like you dating someone with terminal cancer, the possible connections all exist but at the end of the day he relationship is doomed to end relatively soon.

In my setting elf/human relationships are more thought of as just stupid like a 13 year old claiming that they are in love with their boyfriend or girlfriend. Elf/human relationships tend to be one of the following

>Young elf enamored by ideals of true love who falls for a human without considering the obvious implication of the differences in their lifespans

Granted I also modified the background for elf biology slightly so they age about half to 1/3rd as fast as humans up until the age of about 50-80. How half elves are viewed varies from culture to culture. Humans tend to envy half elves in a sort of "lucky fucker, gonna live for so long and girls love his exotic looks." Elves tend to view half elves with a mixture of pity and coddling like a kid with a terminal illness "poor thing, he's going to die so young, his father is such an asshole for doing this to his kids (having children with a human woman)."

Overall the pet comparison sounds stupid. I mean I guess it could work in a setting but it sounds like a stupid setting if you have multiple playable races.
