I actually just gotd done skimming through an article asking "what if natural selection didnt select for being able to accurately assess reality?" Well, apply this to mankind.

Compared to other species, mankind is terrible at accurately assessing reality; overly optimistic, terrible at assessing risk, odds of survival and odds of success. Things like Hannibal's march through the mountains, Cortez burning his boats, the D-day landings or even the Lunar landings at our tech level would be unthinkable madness to other races.

That's why we're adrenaline junkies and obsessed with action movies in this setting. It doesnt seem that outlandish to us, especially with advances in gene mods, cybernetics and other performance enhancements. Imagine if you could go to the doctor tomorrow and get some Captain America serum, and the Limitless drug. Waking up a nietzschean superman, what crazy implusive shit would you get into?

Being the resident intelligent madmen of the galaxy, Mankind would be the go to for when somebody needs mercenaries, explorers, or simply firestarters.

The advantages & disadvantages would be that we would alternate between HFY successes and Eldrad tier fuckups.

To be fair, Natural Selection's only criteria is not if we can survive or thrive in an environment, but if we can breed before dying. Being a risk taker and asking that girl out would work out better than actually considering your options.

Humanity itself would have collapsed or been destroyed if it weren't for the races of aliens they irrationally saved at different times in the past for no discernable benefit helping out, and their tech level would be laughable if it weren't for the occasional stupid and insane experiment actually working after ridiculous amounts of resources were wasted on it. The common joke would be that humans have the best spaceships but still wipe their butts with paper.
