Yes. Very much yes. Best part is, no one ever expects. All the see is what is probably some shitty Snek tribal with the obligatory "Great Snek Mistake".

To add to the thread topic, which one of your decks has the lowest mana curve? The one where, by the fourth land drop, you're already in late game, while everyone else has just started playing? The deck that laughs in the face of MLD and isn't all that bothered by tax effects? Here's mine: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/mgs-kamigawa-crisis/

It's made strictly for 1v1 non-french.

>To add to the thread topic, which one of your decks has the lowest mana curve?
I think Melek. But that's because it's a Fireball deck and X is counted as 0, the Fireball win is usually fucking massive amounts of damage copied 2 or 3 times.
>>
>>49673453
I wasn't even aware that Kaseto had another mode than "unblockable finisher for UG control shell".

A friend of mine had a mono green snek tribal, he made this his commander after it got released and after realizing he was always better off just using it as a voltron/pump unblockable beatstick he went back to the mono green version.
>>
Speaking of Karlov, I'm interested in knowing what the correct amount of protection and removal is. I also wonder if it's worth playing more of the 3 cmc+ effects that generate lifegain triggers, stuff like Contemplation, Righteous Cause, and Orrim's Prayer. I might play Contemplation but I don't know if it's worth it.

Also wondering if I should build it closer to soul sisters and have token generators. That was how I had it at first but I didn't have Suture Priest or pious evangel and I still don't have Auriok Champion.
>>
>>49673496
Not him but this is the main reason I was disappointed by kaseto. His reward for snakes is so shit it's unreal, especially when he's so much better just being a voltron wincon.

Echoing this anon >>49673022 32 is not a sane number of lands to run. 37-8 is normal and that's assuming you have some acceleration to play early. I don't see many ways to refill your hand, so I'm concerned this deck just loses to a board wipe. It seems to lack focus, with some cards like Balefire Dragon wanting to go big and others like Craterhoof and Ascension wanting to go wide. There's a lot of 1 for 1 point removal, which is not good in this format, replace it with more repeatable removal and sweepers (or more ramp/CA). Bow is an ok deathtouch enabler, but Nightshade Peddler and Basilisk Collar are better. You've also got a pretty steep curve, with a mode of 4; trim some 4+ mana cards for <3 mana replacements. I get the impression you play against a lot of Theros gods, if I'm correct then pick up Hallowed Burial, Song of the Dryads, and Descend Upon the Sinful. Primal Surge is awful with all the other instants and sorceries you're packing, not to mention the hydras that come in as 0/0.

This is my list for reference: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/fires-of-yavinaya-1/

Wow, really? My experience with him in my meta and seeing here on /tg/ has been vastly different. Worst part is when I would go to my FLGS for EDH night and be paired with another dude doing some dumb, shitty Snek tribal. It IRKS me and I feel forced to pull him out, if only to show them how it's done.

I know what you meant. What you meant was to put me in a trap of making something that was still weak because snake tribal is an inherently shit concept or making something too broken, but the former was not the point of my post. What was wrong with kaseto was what he does is not good for a tribal deck in commander. A tribal deck doesn't want to spend 2 mana to make one random weenie get +2/+2 and unblockable in commander.

It's not the commander that's making things samey for you, it's that you build the decks too similarly.

Try putting some extreme restrictions on your own deckbuilding. Like only playing cards with even number of letters in their name, or a picture with a building in it, or only creatures with odd toughness etc.

Create your own variety.

Hey guys I'm fairly new to mtg, litterly started a week ago. I'm building a white, blue, black deck and I just have a question regarding a play. If I play a card that requires opponents to pay 2 mana in order to attack me, if I have another card that has a similar effect do the effect stack? Such that they have to pay 4 mana total?
>>
>>49675882
yes
>>
>>49675882
Technically yes, but it's moreso you pay two for the first trigger, and then 2 for the second trigger. A total of 4.

There is literally a strategy built around this called Stax, where you just aim to make it difficult for your opponents to do anything.
>>
>>49675896
Ok. Another question, if I have one that causes me to gain life, and multiple cards that say life is doubled do the multipliers stack?
>>
>>49675928

Each replacement effect will apply to an event exactly once

The event is gaining life, let's say 5, so if you have two replacement effects that each say "if you would gain life, gain double instead", the first will replace that 5 life with 10, then the second will replace that 10 life with 20
>>
>>49675965
Ah ok that makes way more sense then what I was trying to wrap my mind around.

One last question, what's a good deck ratio? Like how many lands, sorcery cards, instants, creatures and so on should I have. I un Der stand it's a mtter of playing alot and seeing what works but I'd like to know what everyone typically plays with.
>>

It depends a LOT on the mana cost of the cards in the deck.

In 60 card decks you want to go for 23 lands as a general rule. Slow decks can run 24-26, fast decks can run 19-22, although there are extremes in both categories where you find decks as few as 10 lands or as many as 35.

You should probably stick to 23-24.

In Commander (This general) where you have a 100 card deck, you typically want 36-38 lands. Although some run down to 30 while others run up to 42-45, depending on theme and curve. I'd probably aim for 37 or 38 lands there.
>>
>>49676034
>>49676009
As for all other permanents? There's no rules there.
Creature heavy decks typically have almost only creatures with 4-8 noncreature spells. Although there exist those that run only creatures too.

Some control decks run only one single creature.

Some combo decks run absolutely none.

So, /edh/, I've got a question for you.
Would you be willing to participate in a "You make the commander" contest? The only rules are no new keyboards and Wizards reserves the liberty to modify the costs, power, toughness or effect scales, though they will -try- to keep the original idea.

>whenever another creature LTB under your control, target opponent loses life equal to power

There, I saved WR
>>
>>49676009

Totally depends on the commander and strategy

a talrand Sky summoner deck wants like 40 instants and sorceries but a ruric thar deck wants like 5 or less, an artifact deck wants like 40 artifacts but other decks want like 3

You can be pretty sure you want like 34-40 lands in a normal deck that doesn't care especially much about lands (as opposed to gitrog or Titania)

Hey its me the noob asking the stacking questions again haha.

So I'm playing with a group of brothers from my fraternity and we have a "league" (I think that's what they called it) where we have rules to follow so that the noob is (myself and one other friend) don't get wrecked. So the rules are as follows:

No single card can be worth more that 5 dollars.

The exceptions to this is if the card comes in a premade deck such as "plunder the graves" (I have been using this).

I'm wanting to build a deck centered aron life gain and win conditions set around this as well as somewhat a control deck. I will be using Orolo as my commander.

Any recommendations?

I'm not talking extreme in terms of the percentage of decks that are turn sideways decks, I'm talking extreme in terms of number of creature spells in their deck

A beatdown deck can still be running sword of feast and famine or true conviction or battle mastery, etc etc etc

And they'll be running some instants and sorceries like board wipes and removal

As long as the creature counts themselves aren't extremely high (>30 all around) ruric thar is still decent

Don't use it. Lifegain is boring and bad, as is Oloro. Trust me, I fell prey to the lifegain trap because it felt "safe," but getting blown out by commander damage or Infect will erase all illusions of safety.

If you really want a "life matters" commander, or at least a deck that can use lifegain to its advantage, use Chainer, Ayli or Karlov.

Exiling something you'd want later can suck, but the way I see it, it's not much different than the card being stuck at the bottom of your deck and just not seeing it.

Of the cards you mentioned, I would still usually just cast them that turn and move on. I believe the card advantage it generates in a color that needs it far outweighs the possibility of exiling a card that you might have wanted later. I use them (Outpost seige, Chandra Pyromaster, Prophetic Flamespeaker, and recently Chandra Torch of Defiance) in my decks and they are better for it. I have not been disapointed in them at all.

well the thing is, you cant really decide whether wrath of god or a value added wrath is better unless you know what other wraths somebody is running

if they are already running toxic deluge, day of judgment, and blasphemous act, then maybe they have the mana efficient wraths covered and that final slot could go to a rout or some other expensive wrath with value added, but if they are running multiple expensive wraths, then the last slot should go to wrath of god

id say that in general, cheap (3-4 mana) wraths are vital because a controllish white deck needs to have a solid chance of drawing a wrath that can wipe the board after a green or red deck races out ahead with a milloin creatures or tokens early on otherwise they'll fall too far behind

stuff like martial coup or decree of pain is great late game though so its nice to have 1 or 2 of that kind of wrath in your deck

No. I mean, the decklist itself is fine but my deck is geared towards 1v1 and rushing out a win as fast as possible, while yours is more built around multi-player. My own Kaseto deck used to have creatures in it but they ended up being cut once I found I really wanted/needed the mana to either pump up the Snek or cast ramp/equipment/answers. Plus, unless they had haste, they either were to slow for my liking or didn't do enough. But hey, different strokes for different folks.

What is a deck that you can really claim some originality for. Its not just a "Put the best ____ from EDHREC for your general" or the standard strategy but more something that you yourself thought up its concept and crafted it into what it is and are now proud of, even if its not exactly what you would call the most optimum build for your commander.

Just curious as it often seems that most players follow the same strategy with certain commanders, the only differences being a few cards here and there that are personal choices.

My only real example is my Thassa deck which is a voltron deck about enchantments to make her a creature and then artifact equipping her and swinging with an unblock able and indestructable god that, even when removed is pretty cheap to re cast. Her threat level is low so I'm usually not a threat until the I start sending her in and her scry ability is pretty useful, especially with divining top.

I've rarely heard of her being used this way so it feels really unique. Its not super fast or combo based but I like the build and enjoy spending the first few turns disrupting the rest of the board.

What about you guys?

Good morning, how's it going? Sorry I wasn't on last night, crazy shenanigans happened.

>>49680852
I was the first person to put spore frog in Meren, and here was the first place I ever told about it, now it's considered a staple. That Meren deck, before I turned it into Mazirek, was pretty unique, it relied on no reanimator outside of meren, and in general was closer to a mid-range stompy gruul deck than a traditional golgari thing. The whole strategy revolved around cantriping cheap creatures to prevent combat damage until I could card cast/reanimate Vorinclex, then I'd drop some fuck-huge timmy beaters and pound on people with all sorts of damage doubling effects. While mazirek is better, nothing warms my heart quite as much as playing Swarmborn giant or desecration demon, turning a fuckload of 1/1's into 7/7's with Overwhelming Stampede, then slapping Triump of the Horde on for massive overkill. Alternate wincon was caldron of souls + sac outlet + meren. You sacrifice your spore frog while caldron is up, reanimate it with Meren, sacrifice it again to avoid another player's combat step, reanimate it with persist, then sacrifice it again for the 3rd player's combat step and suddenly your up to 3 experience counters in one turn with Meren.

Also, I currently run cantrip Uril auras, and I've never seen someone set a deck up like that before. Most Uril decks I play against are the same "basilisk's collar/armadillo cloak/quiteus spike/unflinching courage/gratiuitous violence" nonsense, and while I have some of that included, the general strategy is to ramp first, drop uril second, slap 4+ auras on it in one turn that cantrip, then play something cute like Irresistible Prey to completely fuck someone over very quickly. In general, this deck is lack luster in multiplayer, but holy fuck does it hit hard 1v1. I appreciate the anons that recommended me hexproof creatures, I found Pincher Beetle in my stash.
>>
>>49681445
Well, I guess the reanimator thing with sporefrog wasn`t a wincon, but it might as well have been. People literally can`t hit you with combat damage. I had a Zurgo player ragequit when I pulled that shit on him 1v1.
>>
>>49681445
Spore Frog seems like pretty obvious tech though. I've been playing midrange Meren for a long time anyway. Meren was the only reanimation in the deck.

I built a fun Doran deck where the "secret general" was Evershrike. I've always thought Evershrike should have been legendary, so I built a deck to try and use it. It basically revolved around getting out and enchanting Evershrike as quickly as possible, with ways to get it back if it got exiled.
>>
>>49681483
I've had quite some trouble on keeping meren on the field since everyone tries to exile her as soon as possible after seeing all the shenanigans i pulled with her so at the moment i instead run a lot of reanimation just in case. How do i consistently keep people from exiling her?
>>
>>49681574
Depends on the type of decks your opponents are playing. Are you getting hit with a lot of white or a lot of blue removal? Maybe you're getting hit with both?
>>
>>49681574
Hexproof and Shroud are about your only options. She will be seen as a threat pretty quickly because of what she is, so don't drop her until you have Lightning Greaves or something like it ready to cover her.
>>
>>49676582
>>49676560

Do you prefer combo or killing with commander damage? For the first, you need Blood Artist and/or Disciple of the Vault. For the beatdown, Cranial Plating.
You need more tutors: Demonic Tutor, Fabricate, Reshape.
And sac outlets: Ashnod's Altar, Krark-Clan Ironworks.
And if you add those last two, it wouldn't hurt to put a Nim Deathmantle to combo with Wurmcoil Engine for infinite tokens.
Final note: I wouldn't play a white deck without Sun Titan. Is just too good.

Question:

>Panharmonicon on the battlefield
>Clone enters the battlefield under my control

Can the Clone become a copy of two creatures on the battlefield?

If yes, will one effect 'overwrite' the other?

Or will the Clone simultaneously be a copy of those two chosen creatures?
>>
>>49681436
This is my deck don't post that without my permission fuck you
>>
>>49681693
When Clone enters, it's already another chosen creature. It clones as it enters, not after.
If it copies a creature with a ETB, like Mulldrifter, that ability will trigger twice.

Panharmonicon is sooooooo broken. I love it.
>>
>>49681574
Ignore those posters suggesting hexproof stuff, that's the lame way to do it.

You keep Meren on the field by making sure other things are a bigger threat. Sure, boardwipes and whatnot suck, but in general, if you build a deck that wins without Meren, people aren't going to be using their exile removal on Meren.

But, if all else fails and you desperate want your deck to revolve around her like every other timmy around, I recommend Alpha Authority and Asceticism, plus a healthy ramp suite to offset the mana cost from her being exiled. Really, the problem has more to do with when you're playing her, than what you're suiting her up with. In general, drop her t3/4 with a proper set up, otherwise, play her late game after you know your opponent has used their paths/sword/turn to frog or whatever.
>>
>>49681776
You don't have to have it revolve around her to want her to hit the field and stick. Even if your deck wins without her, it only gets better if she's there. She's a four mana value engine. If you just think of her as that and not a wincon, she's still really good. People will almost always see her as a threat though because she enables lots of tricky plays that, while not necessary, can give you easy control of the board.
>>
>>49681693

Clone isn't an ETB effect, it's a replacement effect, it already is the creature you chose to copy AS it enters.

I'm literally building and brewing my Jori En deck that is really just an expanded Talrand deck with red included for more spell-token cards and a few win conditions besides combat, like Purphoros, Impact tremors, Guttersnipe and Thermo Alchemist. Also Mizzix Mastery can win me the game right there.

I could use Mizzix herself but I like Jori because she is very under the radar and allows me to ramp out and dig early with artifacts and cantrips while also eating my hand away.

So far its really fun as there are a large number of ways to tutor, cycle, dig, or combo off. I'm really enjoying it right now and am grabbing the pieces of it starting tonight at FNM.

I've never seen a Jori deck period, let alone one that is focusing on the strategy I am so I'm really enjoying it.

http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/gisela-sitter-of-faces/

Hey guys can u look at my deck I worked very hard on this. Probably best Gisela deck list
>>
>>49681885
Well put anon, that's exactly what I meant.

In my meren deck, I can't say she was ever a major removal target. You're right, she's a massive value enabler, and is almost always a bonus while she's on the field, but G/B goodstuff is pretty strong in general, particularly with the cheap tutors you have access to.

I tend to build Meren the opposite way that I built brago. What I mean is, Brago revolves entirely around brago connecting to win. Everything in my Brago deck supports making sure that he can connect, and when he connects the game is over. Meren, on the other hand, gives value over time, and she'll rarely win the game on her own, but if she's allowed to sit on the field unimpeded, she'll let you set up a lot of nasty things. As a result, I usually only cast her when I have free mana back with no immediate play, and I usually script a few underwhelming plays once she hits the field so I can build counters without drawing immediate hate. While the traditional fleshbag marauder, merciless executioner reanimator edict thing works well, I try not to lock down the board through her reanimator, but instead use her to bring back Kozilek's Predator or the like and hardcast my threats.

I know it's kind of a meta-way to get around things, but this way usually there is a disconnect between Meren and winning the game. Instead of people being mad that I reanimated something stupid with Meren, they're mad that I hard casted Nulamog, or because Desecration Demon got infect and my edicts caused them to run out of creatures.

Like I said earlier, Mazirek is more fun, but Meren can be neat too.

This is basically all I do with my free time, I remember seeing a thing about Wizards hiring a while back but their requirements are a little crazy for making a card game

My thoughts on what needs to be printed:
WBG needs to expand- they have a lot of good generals but Anafenza's the only one good for metas that aren't super competitive/casual

UG needs a Manifest/Morph-centric commander

RW needs a card-advantage commander or at the very least one that isn't based solely around combat phases- preferably a high-power commander

UR needs an artificer, said artificer should avoid any "spell-slinging" abilities, actually care about artifacts and possibly other artificers, I personally wouldn't mind it making thopters but that's just me

Not just WBG, but all wedges need more commanders to play with- WBR needs a Warrior-centric commander especially

Four-color commanders will almost certainly need a revisit- a pool of two or three for each combination is for the best, and ones that cast directly for all four colors nephilim style should coexist with the ones we're likely to get, which have color identities larger than their casting cost

>>49683623

Iona doesn't have an etb yes, it's similar to a clone in timing, when you decide what creature the clone is a copy of, that's the same time as when you decide what color you're naming with Iona

After it resolves but before it etb's

>UR needs an artificer, said artificer should avoid any "spell-slinging" abilities, actually care about artifacts and possibly other artificers, I personally wouldn't mind it making thopters but that's just me

What would that actually look like though? The best artifacts-matter commander mechanically cover most of the themes Artifacts really have. Add to that the fact that Izzet cards are usually VERY focused on spell slinging exclusively.

Maybe something with Energy counters? The only problem is generating the energy, so I would think he would need some way to create energy himself.

Minotaur guy here, thanks. RW has options outside of swinging for the fences, they're just generally wacky. A commander with tuck on a stick would also be great, even if it only did it when entering or leaving the battlefield.

When X enters the battlefield, return target nonland permanent to the top of its owner'a library.

When X leaves the battlefield, shuffle target permanent into its owner's library. (Or put it on the bottom if appropriate).

Make it a middle cost guy (3RW) and make it a 2/4 or something so it's not super easy to kill to prevent abuse.

Honestly, UR artificer is a tough nut to crack.
I'd love to see one that uses energy and also self-produces energy, honestly; though I do think the idea that Izzet is spell-slinging as a rule is a bit restrictive.

If it absolutely has to sling spells, let it make thopters whenever something gets cast, ala Storm or Aetherflux Reservoir's lifegain. If it's energy, let it make energy- either off of artifact count, artifact CMC, or maybe spells all over again.
>>

>>49683925

How about something like

Abilities:
Whenever you tap an artifact for a non mana ability gain E

When paying for an X spell pay 2E to make one colorless mana.

So the idea is that you play artifacts with abilities, tap to use those abilities, generating energy, then can spend those abilities on huge (x) spells for giant fireballs or meteor storms or draw spells?

Just an idea, the big thing would be making sure that mana rocks didn't contribute or else it would get crazy fast.

If it absolutely has to sling spells, let it make thopters whenever something gets cast, ala Storm or Aetherflux Reservoir's lifegain.

this could almost work, the only problem is that playing huge bomb spells is Mizzix's domain and she is probably the best commander in the game for that kind of gimmick.

I agree. Looting and reaching into the graveyard is the best way to go. Red and white can pull creatures, artifacts and enchantments from the graveyard. That plus looting/wheeling, Bob's your uncle.
>>
>>49684742
Ah, I forget white can regrow too. Yeah, I'd definitely prefer, myself anyway, any of that over paying extra mana to draw a card on cast. I like the ingestigating mentor from SOI a little better than mentor since you don't ever "lose" your chance for the draw and can save it for whenever but even that is pushing it for me. Plus that was investigate which is a specific mechanic so you can't really re-use it unless you just made not-investigate or something.
>>
>>49684742
That's funny, ages ago I homebrewed a legendary angel that did exactly this, she was basically Reya who wheeled on ETB.

I costed her more aggressively than Reya, I think 2WWRR, which I think is reasonable due to more multicolor hard mana and just general power creep since she was printed.

My shitty Riku deck. its full of ramp, X spells, and multiple copy spells.

The goal of it was to ramp up and be able to cast multiple copies of whatever spell an opponent casts. What normally happens is me casting X-spells and copying them to burn people to death, or casting eternal dominion and copying it 2-3 times.
>>
>>49678273
My bad, I was thinking of the black card that's a wrath or a -2/-2 when cycled.

>>49680852
I think it's more a matter of finding someone who's off the beaten path than doing something zany and off the wall with a well played commander. I've brewed a Kataki, War's Wage deck online and it solitaires really well. Have not physically put it together because my area's collective booty gets blasted pretty bad whenever a stax deck shows up.

One of them is literally a nig. If racist cops actually existed then something would have happened before they finished filming.

>Old Nana is the head of a secret cannibal cult in the Nearheath region. She is ancient, having used dark rites to unnaturally extend her life. She presents the facade of a kindly, and senile old lady. When in fact, she is just wondering what recipe to prepare you with.

Old Nana is also Ghave

Kaladesh has broken that bad habit for me.

Really? It was Kaladesh? Really? Did you get tempted by the sweet, sweet expedition dosh with BFZ and OGW or something and won't get tricked again or something?
>>
>>49685108
Don't build it if you don't want to play it. How do you even want to be sold on
>>
>>49685036
Literally Ghave.
>>
>>49685128
I'm p sure what anon means is that he is unsure of whether or not to play him, not that he doesn't wanna.
>>
>>49685036
Pretty much a better Ghave, maybe instead she has "When a non-token creature enters the battlefield you get a 1/1 human token" and "when a creature you control dies put a +1/+1 counter on target creature you control" or something like that.

>6 mana on cast to even get a shot at some card draw
For 6 mana I could be doing something that has an immediate impact, like Aurelia. This needs to have its cost heavily lowered, with other balance changes to match.
>>
>>49685036
Why rename ghave?
>>
New thread where

I would but I'm phoneposting atm
>>
>>49685303
It has two abilities, and the first has just as much of an immediate impact as Aurelia ( needs creatures on the board)

Did you really only read the last couple sentences of a card? How do you do that?
>>
>>49685303
Nigga, you seem to have forgot it has Repercussion up the ass too.

People ask this when they're interested in piloting a commander but are worried said commander sucks.

I don't see what the hell's interesting or good about Ob at all. Landfalling for a vanilla fatty and restricting your deck only to black? Boring.
>>
>>49685489
You are forgetting life loss for the enemy. Besides, mono black isn't that bad of a color in EDH
>>
>>49685489
This is what I meant. If you want to play it play it. If you don't then don't. Landfall On Nixilis is fine. He's just a generic black control deck with a landfall subtheme including all the fetches and similar effects like a black titania with Nixilis as the wincon. It has a neat build around I'd the main appeal since caring about landfall is quirky for black. And it's fine strength wise. Not that strong but not weak either. Black is a decently color to be in so.
>>
>>49685108
Why not do something green black and have him be the secret commander?
>>
>>49685841
Have Gitrog Monster as the general, run splendid reclamation, crucible of worlds and life from the loam, black and green also have a bunch of tutors so getting Ob wouldn't be too hard.
>>
>>49685108
You'd be better off building GitGud Monster and including him I think.

yeah, that's how I run her. Cards like Propaganda and other pillowfort/lockdown cards prevent your opponents from fucking you over. Lots of removal, make her unblockable, give her auras, use vedalken orrery to attach eldrazi conscription before she actually deals damage and wreck your opponent. you can also put in tokens if you need some creatures.
You NEED a strionic resonator.
And if you wanna be extra funny, include pic related.

is new chandra viable in edh or should i trade it off?
