Why did you kick a player from your game?

What (classic?) modules from previous editions are worth adapting to 5E?

Sunless Citadel is a fun little dungeon crawl romp from early 3e. Rebalance the encounters with 5e rules and stat blocks and redo the DCs and it runs great.
>>
I have never kicked a player. But one guy left temporarily for since scheduling issues, and I never invited him back because he creeped out the other players. He's a good friend irl, but just can't contain his power level.

Madness at Gardmore Abbey. It's the final adventure released for 4e, and it showcases EXACTLY why the Deck of Many Things is not an item to fuck with.

The best archetype is pact of the chain warlock.

Dunno, I never read any modules for 3.5 except for that book that might have been third party, not even a book, a pdf that I've downloaded with the books. It had many, many, many non-standard encounters that you could insert into your adventure.
For example, it had a tribe kobolds that worshipped a dragon. Except there was no dragon - it was a very well-crafted trapped statue that could spit alchemist's fire. It was manned by two human bandits, who were making voices.
Scooby-dooby ruse!

Wild magic surges are literally cancer. The entire table is lolrandumb trash.
>>
>>49672397
>having no taste
>>
Wild magic sorcerer gives you a chance to surge whenever you cast a first level sorcerer spell or higher.

Warlock invocations let you cast silent image at will.

Silent image is a sorcerer spell.

Does this trigger wild magic?
>>
>>49672414
Oh, I'm sure this table will do just fine for a beer and pretzels game, but I would prefer if Wizards also included something akin to Psychic Phenomena and Perils of the Warp from Dark Heresy.

The table is a bit crappy yes.

No because not all sorcerers are wild magic sorcerers. WMS is an archetype.

Since someone's already yelled fire, what cantrips would you recommend for a GWM EK at 3? The party already has a tome warlock loaded up with illusion spells, and a crown paladin.

I was thinking Green Flame / Booming Blade, or swap one for firebolt to do something at range. I might also be inclined to take light since nobody seems to have darkvision in the group.
>>
>>49672727
Forgot the other two, we have a longbow fighter and a cleric of uncertain archetype
>>

Booming Blade and Lightning Lure will serve you well. You have a ranged fighter and a warlock if you need real damage at long range, but Lightning Lure can help you ground airborne enemies that are within 10 feet of the ground.

>>49672605
A sorcer spell isn't "a spell on the sorcerer spell list" it is a spell cast as a sorcerer - your spell slots (I would rule it has to be a sorceror known spell too).

If I want to get into tabletop RPG's for the first time, what's a solid class/build to start with that will be interesting but that won't overload me or anything?
>>
>>49673239
Battlemaster fighter. It might look a little daunting at first, but it's dead simple in play, while not being quite so direct and "boring" as Champion.

Assassin or Thief rogue, or any Barbarian, or possibly a warlock, are also solid choices.
>>
>>49673239
Go with whatever you fancy most. So long as you read your class section well enough, understanding 5e (even the casters) isn't that hard. There's a Quick Build section for each class that gets you started out well enough.
>>
>>49673239
Thief Rogue.
Options without the complexity of a spellcaster.
Solid general strategy you can fall back on if you're overwhelmed (get sneak attack, repeat).
>>
>>49673239
Literally everything works. 5e combat is extremely simple and has no hidden depths. You'll do fine, so just play what sounds fun.

In fact, pick a complicated class, because they are less likely to get boring.

>>
>>49673345
>>49672449
>>49672928

Okay, as a Perma DM who's run a lot of systems, I'll break it down how I would rule it, it's not word of law, but it's how I would follow it.

Using your Warlock Invocation to cast At Will Silent Image would NOT trigger the surge, because you are using your Invocation, not a spell. Though it functions as the spell, it is not the spell.

You can however still trigger a surge by casting Silent Image as though it was a spell and expending a spell slot.

The reason Wild Magic specifies spell slots and spell levels is to prevent infinite surges between rests.
>>
I saw the icons from SKT on Roll20 in the Mega - are there any for the Starter Set?
>>
>>49673763
No one has given me access to LMoP on Roll20, if someone did I could properly rip the maps and tokens.
>>
>>49673407
I had the same problem, the two guys weren't too bad though. I hate youtubers as players, I know they need them for an audience, but they're so terrible most of the time.
>>
>>49673682
I agree with the ruling, but disagree with the ruling you gave at the end.

Wild magic is already structured so infinite long rest surges are impossible, because it has to have the Dm make it happen.

The reason for referencing spell levels is so sorcerers have a dependable option in cantrips, without subjecting their party to wild magic risk by the DMS discretion.
>>
>>49673838
Yea it was just the two girls I had a problem with.
>>
"If a character would gain the same proficiency from two different sources, he or she can choose a different proficiency of the same kind (skill or tool) instead"

Is this rule apply to skill proficiency in general or only to background?

In this case, I'm a warlock who is already proficient in persuasion and deception, what will happen when I take Beguiling Influence Invocation?
>>
>>49673847
I'm not too well versed with 5e rules when it comes to Wild Magic, how would you get to perform infinite surges?
>>
>>49673902
By RAW: only to the background. However, it's very easy to avoid overlap by planning beforehand and a flexible DM will likely let you switch to a different one if the overlap is inevitable.
>>
>>49673925

he means casting spells every morning to try and eventually get the random result you want
>>
>>49673925
There's been a discussion in the thread, started by myself to shitpost, about whether a non sorcerer feature, such as invocations that key you cast spells at will, would trigger wild magic surges. Raw I don't think there is anything wrong with it. But obviously most DMS would probably veto it just for sanity.

>>
What's the difference between Polymorph and True Polymorph? It's just the ability to transform inanimate objects, right?
>>
>>49673960
The answer is no. It can't. Because it's not casting a spell. It's using an ability to replicate a spell being cast.
>>
>>49673993
Regular Polymorph has to be a beast, and it can't be permanent, whereas True Polymorph can be anything and becomes permanent if you concentrate for the full duration.

I'm new in the town I am in, and have played a few Pathfinder Society games, but I am really missing Eberron.
>>
>>49674038
AL is stuck in Faerun for a while.

You can get unlucky with some DMs (just like anytime) but I found a good group of people through AL and we now play homebrew games instead.
>>
>>49674002
The invocation explicitly says you're carrying the spell.
>>
>>49674055

Are the rules strict like PFS, where you have to own a copy of the material in order to use it?
>>
>>49674059
Carrying = casting
>>
>>49674038

Curse of Stradh adventure league is pretty good.

A bit silly that you get a magic item every adventure though
>>
>>49674074
Depends on the DM. We let people go for a while without buying the book (while we were still in the store) but then there were a couple people who kept coming back who insisted on picking options not in the free starter rules.

It's fine except that had no desire to learn the game. Ultimately they died for splitting the party and wandering off. Nobody else felt bad. The next time he says "Oh, I had a shield this whole time!" (it was 8 or so sessions in). At that point we told him he needed a book. (also he wanted ot play a druid)
>>

>>
>>49674185
Ok then you can cast it as a Wizard enjoy using Int instead of Cha for the DC
>>
>>49674059
>>49674185
Not quite casting, you're using the ability to activate it. In 3.5 they were Spell Like Abilities, but they seem to have mostly done away with that term for 5E.

>>49674185
You are casting the spell as a Warlock Invocation, otherwise you would be expending the spell slot and getting your Wild Surge trigger.
>>
>>49674185
Any reasonable person would see it as a warlock spell as its a feature of the warlock class
>>
>>49674226
we aren't talking about reasonable people here

we're talking about an autist who has been posting in circles about meaningless minute rule readings for no reason
>>

>>
So.. everyone in my party reroll, now we got Paladin,Ranger and Bard.

Should I change my Druid into a Wizard? Do INT-based character even necessary? Also consider going with Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster.
>>
>>49674185
http://www.sageadvice.eu/2015/07/19/wizard-sorcerer-multiclass-spells/
>>
>>49674335
I'd either stick with druid or swap to arcane trickster, druid is cool and if your bard isn't doing skill monkey things you can cover it as an AT while still having some neat tricks.
>>
>>49674222
The invocation literally phrases it as "you may cast [spell name] at will"

Notice the use of the word cast there.

But that isn't the issue. The issue is that it isn't a sorcerer spell that's being cast.
>>
>>49674212
Silly, how could I cast wizard spells when I'm not multiclass as one?

All the feature checks for anyways is if the spell you casted was on the list for sorcerer spells. This is why there are a ton of class features that add spells to class lists.

>>49674222
Wild magic doesn't require you to use a spell slot. Go on, read it.

However, the invocations explicitly say you are casting the spell.

Your interpretation is perfectly valid as a rai sanity check. But it isn't supported at all by raw.

>>49674226
I agree that reasonable people could decide the raw doesn't make sense and rule against it.

Invocations don't count as spells known or prepared. You can simply cast them.
>>
>>49674391
See >>49672605 It specifies 1st level or higher spells, that means spells of a 1st level slot or higher.

>>49674373
Yes, the invocation does. BUT, because of the way Wild Magic is worded, because it doesn't take up a spell slot, it doesn't function with Wild Surge.
>>
>>49674430
>>49674430
Spells have levels regardless of whether they were cast with a spell slot or not. These levels are detailed explicitly in the book.

>>
>>49674539
Yes. Anon is trying to convince us that he finagled the dongle and now it pisses gold.
>>
>>49674574
Can't you already do it with the DM's approval (which is needed anyways) by just using Tides of Chaos on every single roll possible?
>>
>>49673964
There was a thread earlier where OP asked if barbarians were good in 5e. Autismo-kun came in and derailed the thread by saying that all martial classes are shit and that Eldritch Knight is the best archetype because it lets a martial class become a caster.

He was basically a 3.pf caster supremacy fag. Also he was completely unknowledgable about the system. I thought maybe it was him again, what with the "EK is best."
>>
>>49674603
Yes.
>>
>>49674616
EK is kinda cool flavor-wise though, I agree. If I wasn't perma-DM it's probably my archetype of choice. I really like how Fighter works this edition, and EK hits all the right buttons in my opinion for a multiclass that isn't really a multiclass.
>>
>>49674539
A while ago, I noticed you could get certain "people" progressively more triggered by pointing out raw inconsistencies or nonsense results.

>>49674603
Technically this is all with dm approval anyways, since wild magic rolls only ever happen when the Dm calls for it. The problem with the tides of chaos ability is the same as with the first ability: it requires a first level spell at least. So it is finite, unless you have an infinite source of first level spells.
>>
>>49674646
Tides of Chaos doesn't require a spell - you can use it to get advantage on a lot of rolls:

>Starting at 1st level, you can manipulate the forces of chance and chaos to gain advantage on one attack roll, ability check, or saving throw.
>>
>>49674646
>>49674703
Nevermind, you meant to recharge it for an infinite number of surges.

The mention of eldritch knights reminds me - the EK section says they can only use wizard spells and cantrips, but some anon said they could use any cantrips because there's cantrips that can be used by wizards, sorcerers, and warlocks

I get where he's coming from but the manual trumps him, aren't those 3-class cantrips meant for those 3 classes and not for archetypes that use a part of them?
>>
>>49675182
No because they explicitly say "part of the Wizard, Warlock, and Sorcerer spell lists", not "can be casted by Wizard, Warlock, and Sorcerer".

A bunch of them are pretty much made for EK anyway, like Booming Blade.

>>49675171
What if the casting doesn't move, but is activated from a distance?

Consider the following:
>Cast Glyph of Warding on a tile in dank wizard tower. Store Haste or some shit.
>Activation perimeters: Glyph feels 1kg of weight on it.
>Place pot over the top of it, upside down. Nothing is touching the glyph. Put a 1kg weight on the pot.
>Store Drawmij's Instant Summons on the pot.
>Adventure. Upon needing to cast Haste, Activate Instant Summons to teleport the pot to you, dropping the weight, activating the glyph.
>You are the creature who triggered the glyph. You have haste cast on you, no concentration, no additional slots used.

By the same token, is Leomund's Secret Chest a moving space? Or is it a portal to an extradimensional space?
>Cast Spell Storing Glyphs of Warding onto the inside of Leomunds Chest walls, on on the pages of a journal in the chest.
>Activation perimeters: When I touch the glyph.
>Deploy Leomunds chest in battle, reach into the extradimensional space, and touch glyphs to cast spells without the use of spell slots.

In the schools of magic sidebar, animate dead is called out as being evil because the corpses are animated by unlife. Like that opposite of life. Doesn't make the person evil, but a person who does it often would probably be evil.

Since we're breaking glyphs of warding now, you can use it as a 100 reliable divination spell. I dunno. I like my necromancer with his completely broken moral compass. He was exiled from his city because of necromancy, and now he's trying to do some good for the world, but he also knows is necromancy is evil. To him though, it's the only way he really knows.

And even though he still wants to help the world, he believes that the enemies his team kills should serve him, and, if given the power and the chance, would love to storm his city with an army of undead to take back his place. When push comes to shove though, he's all for helping others and stopping bigger threats.

How do i make my players discover an ancient ruin while marching on a road towards a town?

Just had a great idea!
They travel down the dirt road until they encounter a couple in a caravan, in the process of being robbed by two bandits. Just as they're within range one of the thieves picks up the couple's baby, and the two run away.
The couple then urges the heroes to chase them and get them, which they do, because they're heroes. Turns out it's (obviously) a trap, and they're ambushed by several other theives waiting for them. All the fighting causes the ground to shake and they all fall into the ruins.
The fall hurts the heroes, but kills the thieves.

there is noting to say it wouldnt work, but I never understood this idea that you multiclass to 20 when most games dont go past 10
>>
>>49676294
because these people are planning for their games, which may be intended to go to 20 or not, and it would be wise to hedge ones bets in any case. Simply so you don't get to level 12 and go "well, uh my character has no more reasons to live and/or be a party member ... honestly did not expect this campaign to get past level 10 so I was kinda scrambling through 11" or other dumb crap.

I also know a few DMs for organised play at my FLGS who'll accept any level-appropriate character from any of the other campaigns run at said FLGS, so it's not like all characters immediately die in a literal or figurative sense the moment the campaign ends.
>>
>>49676294
>but I never understood this idea that you multi-class to 20 when most games don't go past 10

it's some form of autism/ a symptom of not actually playing and instead just fantasizing about playing and making characters and shit

even if you manage to get a consistent, great group that plays weekly, it's gonna be literally a year + before you get even close to 20.

If you're doing like 1-3 combat encounters and the GM is using the recomended CR/Experience rates, it'll take literal years of weekly play.

Weird question:
Say there was this young Princess who's traveling in another country and recognizes the people (the party) who had killed her father.
She's not in any position to attack them, as she's not on her own turf and if she reveals her nature they might try to kill her. But she's not about to let them get away unscathed. I could come up with my own best plan, but she's still a (pretty damn smart) kid, so I'm not sure how to limit her own planning abilities to remain reasonable.
They're pretty competent, but she's determined to get at least some sort of revenge. Maybe trying to play the characters against one another by using her apparent innocence?

shes a princess, most likely reatively wealthy still, and smart
why would she ever even let the party know the attack is from her in any sense
not only does she most likely have people willing to throw their lives away to get revenge for the king, she is capable of placing a substantial bounty, or finding a way to coerce lesser peoples into doing her work
>>
>>49676634
They know about her as a person, but they don't know her true nature, nor her relationship to the dude they killed. Hell, they don't know anything about her other than the fact that she's a princess and therefore important (and in their interest not to kill).
Like I said, the point is to get the revenge without them finding out she's responsible, or to get these guys so dead it doesn't matter.
>finding a way to coerce lesser peoples into doing her work
Probably the best option, but the issue there is making sure her kill request is untraceable.
There are a couple of untraceable goonies in the general area that would be willing to die to avenge the king, but there's no guarantee they'd be able to get the job done.
The only other option I have planned is an idea that involves another character that happens to be in the area at the time. She would secretly inform him about the fact that one of their former associates screwed his brother over (a fact that's completely true) and use his hot-bloodedness to her advantage.
>>
>>49676700
Maybe sent them on a job that has a high fatality rate, using a trusted middleman to order a bunch of goons to make sure the party dies or to take them out themselves if they survive.

Could work, although they can be vicious little sods. Can't find anything that suggests that you can't polymorph something into a baby version of a beast, just that it isn't a thing in the MM.

I've been working on a way to pick off bigger enemies as a moon circle druid, and I think I can pull it off by polymorphing them, assuming a bird form them, flying them up as high as I can and then dropping them. The advantage of doing so is that they can't even use a slow fall or fly spell to avert the fall, given that spells are suppressed when polymorphed.

Classic bird of prey tactics.

>>
>>49678094
I try to avoid artifact weapons myself since it's kind of hard to do justice to something that a god fights with in my head. I'd probably just go the lazy route saying they're diminished from age, just a +4 weapons that have a handful of spooky, but mostly ribbon side effects (maybe the spear requires you give up an eye to attune or the elf weapons make you more androgynous or some bullshit), and are mostly used for being recognized as a significant figure (ex it's easy to assemble an orc war band when they know you have the spear of gruumsh and want to fuck up some elves)
>>
>>49678148
Rogue/Barbarian is pretty good

When it comes down to it "light on casting" means monk, rogue, fighter or barbarian. Monk seems generally pretty bad for multiclassing to me (aside from with rogue maybe), but otherwise any of those could combine well

What I did was, I had 6 tentacles rising up out of the water, they would eacht have the stats of Giant Octopus as in the MM, except for the reach of the attack was 35 ft. Also, while each tentacle had its separate initiative, the hp would be pooled, so no tentacles dying off midway through.

The other 2 tentacles would be coiled around the ship. If they received 20 dmg in one turn, they would retreat, and resurface at the start of the next round. At the end of the round, if 1 (or 2) tentacles would still be wrapped around the ship, I would add 1 (or 2) to the ship destruction counter. If the counter reached 6, the ship would've been destroyed. I did not explain or show this counter mechanic of course, just hint that the ship would creak, and that it might not hold out.

There were also sailors running around the ship or being grapped, which they could save/protect. Like I said, the players loved it, and it got really exciting, the ship destruction counter reaching 5 before the giant squid was scared away (you don't kill a giant squid).

I have this player who is afraid of metagaming. He's new to the game and read up about metagaming and the ire it attracts so he was pretty much controlling himself to not metagame. Like there was this door that had some secret shit on it and he failed his Investigation check and left it, saying nothing wrong with it but his party followed and investigated it again and failed and he started going "Guys, stop that! WE're metagaming already!" and shit.

I'm not sure how to deal with this. I reasoned with him that it's okay the characters investigated again because in context, you guys found a door in the middle of the forest so it's in-character for everyone to be curious if there is more to the door than what the Wizard initially investigated as "nothing wrong with it" and yet he still insists that he read that "multiple skill checks on one point borders on metagaming since we're rolling until we succeed"

He has a good head on his shoulders but dang, he's like the pure anti-metagame police.

Has anybody else noticed that the new set of miniatures has 9 repaints within the same set? That seems kind of cheap (even though they have different weapons, so not 100% same mold).

I also noticed that the mini for Yuan-Ti Abomination is medium, although its stats in the MM say it's large. Did I miss something here?

>Has anybody else noticed that the new set of miniatures has 9 repaints within the same set? That seems kind of cheap (even though they have different weapons, so not 100% same mold).

I like the options for either ranged or melee weapons. I would have a problem with the thri-kreen having two kinds of melee weapons, but it's a thri-kreen, and they lack miniatures. The hill giant shouldn't have a spear version, though.

>I also noticed that the mini for Yuan-Ti Abomination is medium, although its stats in the MM say it's large. Did I miss something here?

Some of the giants are supposed to be huge. The abomination is just less large, so you can effectively get two large (or a large and a huge) in a single pack. You can always buy or make a larger bage and stick that on it.

Give people without the feat the posibility of taking a -5 to hit for +5 dmg. Its okay?

9.5+9.5+9.5 vs 10.5+10.5+9.5. How would you fix it?
I have think about copying some 3.5 feats that gave +1d6 dmg per attack that hits at end of the round without counting the first. So:
1 attack hit -> no extra dmg
2 attacks hit - 1d6 extra
3 attacks hits - 2d6 extra.
These has to be done on the same attack action, so you cant acumulate attacks with the action surge feature..

That or dont let people with the dual wielder feat the 1d8 weapons but they attack with the bonus action as many times with the extra action.
>>
>>49679366
This, but don't feel that if a character is truly helpless that you can't non-combat have them die.

Sneaking up on someone and trying to slit their throat? If they have the HP, they probably got hurt by it, but spun away, or managed to hear something at the last second. The sneak effectively ends upon the attack, and the victim was surprised, but that's it.

Have a prisoner tied down, surrounded by the party, with no chance of escape? Feel free to let whatever the party want to be lethal, be lethal. Mechanical HP is irrelevant unless you mean for them to have a method of survival.

Combat is so simple as to be boring, martials are only adequate in combat, meaning half of the classes encourage boring games.

Sure, but 3.5 had an easy solution. Tier lists. There is no easy solution to make combat interesting and martials good out of combat in 5e. There are regular debates in these threads about the best way to do it, but very rarely a consensus.

Size is how much space the creature needs to effectively fight or will take up during a fight. Humans generally aren't 5 ft. wide, if you treat insects as 2.5 ft. wide you would similarly need to tell the two gnome players they can't be side by side in a 5 ft. wide hallway.
>>
>>49680598
I'd like a supplementing thing that explains out-of combat use for various things. Like Rage being usable at-will but without the damage and resistance so you can grow stronger to lift/break shit, Fast Hands describing other effects than action economy-related changes, etc. One of my biggest issues with 5e is that it claims that there are three pillars but 90% of abilities are worded or designed with ONLY combat in mind, giving no clear benefit to out of combat stuff.

Another alternative is to make the skill system matter as it's currently pretty weak, but casters gain skills as well so this would only benefit rogue and bard. I do thing physical stats should have less limits though, i.e. the wizard can cast a fireball with his 20 INT so why can't the same-level barbarian break a tree with his fists, climb a building by gripping into the stone with his fingers, etc. But then some people think that's just animu garbage and dislike anything with "wu" in it.
>>
>>49680598
People refuse to publish 5e tier lists out of pure spite though, they can't bare to admit that Mearls didn't fix anything.

You need to adjust things a bit. There's an Unearthed Arcana with most of the races, an Artificer Arcane tradition which needs work, and Dragon Marks.

You need to adjust things so there is a wider spread of minor magical items and fit certain archetypes/traditions to locations.

It seems like it plays fine and I'm running a very episodic Eberron game with 5E as my backup campaign when too many of my main game players can't make it.

Back when 5e first released we had a kind anon do damage charts for all the classes and class paths. There was very little difference as far as damage goes between them all. In fact fighters, rogue, and hunter rangers outdamaged casters until level 14. The only caster that starts out above average, but decreases in power until they surpass it again is the moon druid.

In 3.5e, that difference began at level 5 and the gape grew by a substantial amount. That is huge.

Now the tier system also uses 'utility' as a point of reference. High level clerics, high level wizards, high level druids, high level sorcerers, and mid level bards all win in the utility field once they start getting level 5 spells. Clerics, Sorcerers, and Druids have a distinct disadvantage as they have much fewer known spells than in 3.5 so if they decide on utility they have to sacrifice on offense and control.

TLDR: Tiers exist but not with extreme differences between classes. Spells are not as powerful, many require concentration to limit multi-casting. Less spells known. AL and Adventures cap at level 16.
>>
>>49681998
I'm going to sum up your writing, because it doesn't bring anything new to the table: martials deal more damage.

Unfortunately for your point, this ignores the reality that damage is only relevant in a third of the game. Outside of combat, martials are objectively worse, and this has always been the point of the argument in the 5e. Kindly limit your responses to the lack of our if combat utility martials have in the future.

So one of my players wanted to roll an aarocka sun sol monk which I thought was going to be really fun but in the last session he tried to use his wings to fly vertically up and use the sun sol ranged attacks to rain fire from above. The problem is when an enemy moved to attack him he went "but im still like 30 ft in the air he cant hit me". In the end I ruled that since the enemy had a lance he could still hit his feet or whatever but im afraid he's the type to exploit anything he can to win and will cheese future encounters. Is there a rule why he cant do this or am I wrong?
>>
>>49682314
He can naturally fly and shoot magic, so his character has a distinct advantage against earthbound enemies with no ranged weapons. Let him have his moment.
Then plan future encounters that take place in dungeons with low ceilings, against other creatures that can fly, or against competent ranged attackers.

The complaint was martials are only adequate in combat. This can be read in two ways: Martials deal average damage in combat or martials have no meaningful abilities outside of combat. I addressed the average damage side and the tier responses.

Now you raise two separate complaints. Outside of combat martials are worse and that martials lack combat utility.

What are the 'three' parts of the game: Combat, Interaction, and Exploration?

Rangers, followed by druids and clerics win for survival in the wilds.

Rogues, followed by bards and warlocks win for social beguiling.

Those are two martials that can beat or compete with casters outside of combat. I'll repeat that a caster using known spell slots for those basic purposes is hobbling themself.

As an aside, with backgrounds any character regardless of class can be good at something related to interaction or exploration.

For combat utility, martials have an advantage with hit points and with defenses. In 3.5, a caster could 'buff' themself with fifteen different buffs that lasted the whole day, making them untouchable and unkillable. In 5e, a caster can cast 1 buff that lasts for as long as they concentrate on that single spell. This changes with Foresight, but by that level the game is over. Concentration checks are brutal if your DM forces you to use them. Martials will be hit less often and survive more damage, that is utility. That allows you to make strategic plays. To cut off a retreat. Distract a foe. Seperate a group. You do it with your body. Not some sissy vines on the ground.

I can't see a reason he cannot do this. He might not be harmed by a lot of creatures, but he can be normally targeted by ranged attackers and spells, and there are a couple of spells that "counter" flight, like earthbind (lvl 2 spell from elemental evil) and basically anything that makes him unconscious (which also means he takes damage and falls prone, check PHB for more info).
Also remember that he cannot fly everywhere, like inside buildings, caves & narrow places. So he should be able to use his features and have fun without abusing it all the time. If you feel like he's trying to abuse it, throw some creatures with earthbind or something similar at him till you get the results you want.

Is 5e easy to pick up and learn, from both a player's and DM's perspective?
>>
>>49682428
Caster spells beat rangers at exploration and survival. Goodberry for instance completely invalidates the rangers food proficiencies.

Backgrounds apply equally to all classes, and this aren't relevant for this discussion.

The only martial that can compete with casters for out of combat utility is the rogue. One exception is not a grand counterpoint. Also, the rogue is a worse skillmonkey than the caster version, the bard. So there's that.

In combat, martials deal more damage to single targets, but casters have aoe damage and aoe disables, making it roughly even there.

Taking up the sword of the warrior still inside him, he vowed to never take another cock up his ass, or in his mouth until he brought the evil doer responsible for his lover's deaths to the sword. Unfortunately a life time if taking "swords" up his "sheath" did not train him for using weapons. Having the lance hit him was a bad play. He can fly so let him fly. Be sure to adjust future encounters that you want to be challenging to include enemy spellcasters or enemy ranged users. Plus, one good hit that makes him unconscious while in the air is an instant failed death save. Most humanoid foes have secondary ranged weapons to deal with characters at a distance. In dungeons and caves his flight will be of limited use.

Still a good feat, and dex is so good that it's still a viable option. But going dex means you are a dex fighter, with the benefits that comes with. You'll be maxing dex first most likely, can't dump str (take athl) and may take another feat or boost CON before shield master, but I'd still take it at some point for the alright shove and dex save shit.

He lived on the streets before a hard-ass priestess[/spoiler] gave him a whipping and hard dicking, took him in and wore him out, and had him trained for the church. Became a crusader. Add/adjust for details of your game world.

True. Thanks for the hand-holding. I've only ever played Paladins. (With the exception of one Hexblade in 3.5) The ordered stat rolls really made me look at the other class options.

Bullshit. There is plenty for a DM to work with. A DM that can't make 5E interesting is either lazy or a bad DM. Not to mention tons of fluff and lore(non-crunch content) from other sources can be adapted just like for any RPG. The problem is that new DMs don't know how to innovate and improvise with the tools that are provided. 5E requires more environmental/terrain building and its more balanced for more than just combat so DMs need to draw more from exploration and social interaction. Encounter design also forces the DM to build more intricate encounters with multiple enemies instead of single mary sue monsters.

What's stopping Monk/Cleric from being good?
>>
>>49683470
not him, i consider it good

basically though, monk cleric, is essentially trading one feat(polearm master), for 1 level(martial arts).
both severely limit what weapons you can use, but both are easy ways to get a (somewhat) necessary bonus action/extra attack off every round, that alot of clerics need

thats pretty much all it brings to the table, you wouldnt go much further, if even further at all, because each monk level, is a noncaster level you're stuck with
