Try Worm. It's about a world where people get Parahuman abilities when they hit a "trigger event" which only happens in like one out of every 70,000 people and results in a mostly random but often violent superpower.

If you like Mass Effect then I'd reccomend both of these.
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6049842/1/Razor-s-Edge
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9156000/1/And-the-Meek-Shall-Inherit-the-Galaxy

The first is pretty much a retelling of mass effect 2 but done better, there's two sequels about Lair of the shadorwbroker and Mass Effect 3. The second is an AU story where the quarians and humans have first contact just as the Turians come along and If I remember correctly spirals into insanity.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3147068/1/The-Black-Mesa-Incident
This is a novelisation of Half Life from Gordon Freeman's point of view. The sequels continue with Half Life 2.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8467432/1/Living-to-die
Haven't actually read this one yet but my friend keeps telling me about it. It's about a boy from a noble family of Krieg joining the Death Korps.

Fuck you, Worm is literally shit. Its all about a bullied child who gets powers so you sympathize with her the whole time even when she shoots babies. Its pointlessly dark for the point of being 'Not Comic-y/Realistic', littered with ass pulls and self-contradictions and the big twist is everyone gets powers from a SPACE WHALE WORM. Fuck this novel and everyone who likes it and FUCK WILDBOW. Tha cunt.

Webnovels: Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka.
You know how there's a thousand and one poorly translated webnovels where Blando the generic Japanese protagonist gets hit by a truck and reincarnated in a fantasy world as a level one human with some cheat skill, where he then gets all the power and all the chicks?

This isn't that webnovel. A classroom of kids is destroyed, and all 25 people there are reincarnated in the fantasy world the attack originated from. Only one of those is reincarnated as the lowest of the low, a spider.

I'd say that A Practical Guide to Evil is probably up /tg/'s and maybe your alley?

https://practicalguidetoevil.wordpress.com/

The idea of it is like this: There is the Dread Empire of Praes and the Kingdom of Callowan. The first is Evil and the other Good. They've been warring for centuries and for the past twenty years or so, Callowan has been occupied by Praes.
The Main Character is an orphan girl in occupied Callowan who wants to join the Legions of Terror but gets headhunted by Praes' mightiest warrior, The Black Knight to become The Squire.

I like it because it plays around with the idea of story-positions (The Squire, the Lone Swordsman, the Dread Empress) and gives metaphysical empowering and backing to them. Also, for a young adults novel, it has better than average political games.

But the real biggie is when you find out the plans of the MC's mentor, the Black Knight: To give Evil, the side that has never truly won, a single victory, to defy the Heavens themselves and to bring Callowan into the Praes fold forever by making a Callowan-Praes entitled person

I probably explained it poorly but I really do hope you guys give it a chance.

Fuck you. MTCFF ULTRA a round robin WWF fanfiction involving pretty much everything.

Anything by Twoflower/Stefane Gagne, one of the few writers to actually continue on to decent original fiction as well as the creator of several NWN modules. Bay of Pigs and Ministry of Confusion are both decent anime inspired ones that can be read with no knowledge of ranma 1/2. It's an in-universe travelogue written by a forsaken who's well-preserved enough to pass as human with a bit of makeup as he goes to all the in-game zones and explores the culture of the world

>Only one, and completely justified
Let me explain further. The people who had the baby were the most powerful and disturbing group of Parahuman serial torturers/killers on the planet. The choices the protagonist had were to either A. Let the baby live and end up as another serial killer or tortured to death for amusement or tortured for all eternity in a looping time bubble. Or B. Try and fail to grab the baby and escape. Or C. Mercy kill the baby and kill the emotion controlling Parahuman behind the baby.

The inquisitor by deathwing17
The Death Korps of RWBY by Doomsdayguy12345
Tide of War by TheSGC
To spread his light by Simpli
and Death Korps of Justice by Vengeful Soldier.
All the death korps stories don't fit the more 'Each kropsman has no individuality' characterisation but they are good enough stories so it can be overlooked.

high-concept kinda-scifi - exponentially-appearing superheroes, forbidden sciences, and information as (manipulable) substance. I personally like The Gods are Bastards, a web serial by D. D. Webb. The best way to describe it is to think of a fairly traditional Tolkien-esque setting, then move 500 years into the future to a magical equivalent of the industrial revolution. The worldbuilding is awesome, especially since it takes a fairly generic fantasy world that uses a lot of worn tropes and turns it into something unique. Where else have you seen a strict matriarchal Drow society based on rational socioeconomic concerns instead of female spider bondage with a side of chainmail bikini? Seriously, I can't advertise this thing enough. Check it out!

On the topic of Isekai, there's a story that came off of /tg/ in 2012 called Stranded in Fantasy. It's told in the form of journal entries by a guy and a bunch of other random people who, to quote the summary, "get hypno-suckered into some plot-device portals that land them in a city in a world where D&D is reality." The people aren't overpowered. The story literally begins with them having no idea where they are and basically becoming beggars before having to flee. And although the do develop powers eventually, there's always a bigger fish. It also delves into the implications of bringing current technological knowledge into a medieval-level society, which most Isekai stories don't do. Overall, pretty awesome stuff.

Unsounded. The mutant preteen daughter of a crime boss and her zombie wizard bodyguard go on adventures to prove her worth as heir to the crime family.

Despite organized crime being a big focus, its set in a very high fantasy setting.

Most of Worm's bullshit happens because MUH PRECOG, which is the most thinly veiled "because the author wanted it" plot device one can have.

I can respect wildbow's worldbuilding and how much effort he put into Worm, but his use of precog and shit like that to force the story along his vision is really grating. Besides that, the pacing is crap and I felt like he was trying too hard to make the capeshit equivalent to Evangelion.

it's like an entire universe of bonesaws. Main character is roughly social-only tattletale with memory problems, and the Lambs read like the Undersiders did at the very beginning: a bunch of people using shitty powers and combining them in cool ways to take people by surprise.

Sy: Neuroplasticity drug stress-test experiment. has ability to roughly reallocate stat points. a dick.
Lillian: medic. non-experiment.
Gordon: body part synthesis test. dirty fighter; all around golden boy. also an asshole.
Jamie: perfect memory project caterpillar.
Helen: cute girl, skilled at acting and unhinging her muscles and grappling people to tear them limb from limb

Mary: combat specialist
Ashton: social monster holy shit he's gonna be unstoppable when he grows up
Evette: a qt planner with no social skills. a good waifu
abby: autism
Nora/lara: communication
Duncan: a shit

I don't mind the vague probability stuff because nobody really expects the numbers to mean anything (million to one shot works every time, don't tell me the odds, etc.). But Path to Victory harms the story just by existing, especially as the theoretical limitations in practice do nothing. Contessa is the worst character (and she ruins the ending too).
>>
>>49674848
I honestly never got how the Undersiders could be considered to have 'shitty powers.' Maybe Alec seems underwhelming because he doesn't have the time/inclination to go full Hijack at the beginning but the others, Taylor included? You'd need to be willfully ignorant to think they're "weak."
>>
Confessions of a Wayward Son, bretty gud 40K fic about a Thousand Sons turncoat.
https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Confessions_of_a_Wayward_Son
>>
>>49674883
I think the whole 'weak' powers bit is mostly just PR and how everybody thinks about it.
Every power is bullshit, if you think about it hard enough and figure out a way to focus it into something. Some powers are easier to use sure, being a flying brick is infinitely more simple than being a tinker specializing in the creation of modular uses for other peoples tech. So when a power pops up that isn't obviously and immediately useful (aside from tinkers, because simple economics and force multipliers) it gets called weak.
I know I'm not alone in thinking that dozens of the characters could have been so much more, and they don't have the excuse of having had the power all their lives and so it's mundane to them. They were all regular people, who are suddenly given power, and have every reason to push and explore and exploit that power to its limit.
>>
>>49674963
Canary, for instance, has a one-trick power; Panacea fucking squandered her amazing abilities but it was totally in character.

>>49674883
Yeah. Hijack, Imp, Taylor, Tattletale, Grue - they're all pretty strong - but compared to Lung, whose power lets him melee Endbringers, Kaiser, whose power is frankly ridiculous, Fenja/Menja, Bakuda, a gimmick tinker whose gimmick is destruction, Coil, whose Thinker power is frankly ridiculous, Vista, Panacea, Glory Girl/New Wave, Panacea, one of the ten strongest capes world-wide, Armsmaster, in tune with his shard- and this is just in Brockton Bay.

well. none of them have powers specced to direct combat, and they have to use them intelligently to strike hard and get away. it's more like that. Lambs don't do direct fights either unless they have to, preferring espionage, traps, and stuff like screaming madly about shaking boxes to distract their opponents before Helen.

Test it. We know it works over speakers, the boyfriend at the concert couldn't have gotten far enough through security to hear her over the sound of a crowd at a concert. Do recordings work? Can her suggestions after signing be audio spliced? Does her shard care?
Start a self-help line, a few minutes of recorded singing and then a carefully put together few sentences about quitting drinking and being a better person.
Hell just give her a loudspeaker and have her tell people to admit any serious crimes they know of. Start playing her music and suggestion that 'the slaughterhouse nine should really just kill themselves' across the city when they show up. Well yeah, considering what's been happening I've been wanting her to kill her mother as well. It was a challenge to overcome anyway.
Granted, she is able to do what most monsters can't do, and that's build up their tolerance and level up the same way, in most regards it makes sense that she could do what other monsters couldn't especially regarding that high stat for speed. She's also gained levels in stealth, resistance, and even HP regen. I would assume that most monsters can't get to that point considering that they don't know how. But maybe I'm just sperging and not making sense, who knows?

but that's wrong.
He has a harem of like every fetish of minion.
Crossdressing shota/loli twin combo, succibi that only wants the bone, vampire that loves being his human chair.
The list goes on.
He just gets forcibly cockblocked/emotionblocked by his own magic/undeadness.
Also the series is less generic power fantasy and more "what the fuck, every NPC is raid boss tier, the game he played was /incredibly/ pay to win and yet generic salarymen who got bullied for their choice of race were one of the top players"

I will admit that the reason the series is so good is the thoughts of the MC.

that's actually what pisses me off most about gamer crossovers.
some are actually good. really good.
but they're fucking EVERYWHERE. and none of them are complete or probably ever will be complete, because material they're using for half the crossover just keeps getting worse, and shows absolutely no sign of slowing down the power ramp.
I'm just very happy I haven't found a ranma 1/2 one yet, what a goddamn clusterfuck that would be.

...and the demons don't. The demons are carrying a giant fucking idiot ball constantly.

The highlight for me was when they unleashed their magical whoopass on DETROIT of all places because they figured it's juuuuust fine to operate on FIFTY YEAR OLD INTELLIGENCE about where the important targets are.

There's HFY, and then there's "we have bomber jets, the other guys are stupid fire giants".

>Yeah, that's why I pinpoint it as the probable starting point to where it gets shit.
I wouldn't say it goes to shit. Rather, there is a somewhat clumsy transition as that the series undergoes a genre shift and the story stops being about Kumo's desperate attempts at survival and triumphing against superiors and more about her being forced to manage the fate of the world to guarantee her personal freedom as all the secrets and foreshadowing from the perspective shift chapters become unveiled.

I think it would have been a lot better if it didn't try to be both Cosmic Horror and Street Level, and if it stopped pretending its main character has a weak power. No, absolute perception of everything within a mile plus unlimited multitasking plus perfect control of arthropods isn't a weak power. You're just being emo because you're a support character.

Here's a pretty good Teen Titans fanfic from back in the day. It stars a dark, mysterious, edgy self insert teen wankfest type OC but the whole story is pretty damn self aware and avoids making the OC cringey. Most of the time. Mixes it up between lighthearted friendship stuff and grimderp.

Taylor isn't even support, she's just dumb like most of her audience and thinks "Can't slapbox an Endbringer/get direct writer plot intervention = weak".

This, as her first night in cape is incapacitating a guy who CAN slapbox an Endbringer with no serious prep ot attempt to seriously injure on her part and playing her hand too early. Then she proceeds to get direct author intervention anyway.

>>49684011
You have to realize something: a lot of readers want cliches. They want simple, easy to understand, black and white worlds. The vast majority of people don't read much for pleasure and when they do, it's to stroke a culture boner because they read a giant children's novel. It's why Harry Potter got so popular with adults and why nobody in fanfiction/Internet genre fiction knows what the fuck the word "brevity" means.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that she incapacitated Lung, she got a few good shots in and managed to really piss him off with the pepper spray but in the end he was still about to murder her before the Undersiders finished him off, the reason Lung actually got fucked up was because Autismmaster gave him a too strong tranquilizer without thinking about the poison he already had in his system.

But I still agree that it's bullshit how people say her power is week.

>>
>>49685744
It's interesting, and it's good, but it's much more interesting than it is good. The fusion of this sort of middle-aged malaise and silver-age-flavored cape shenanigans is weird, and the plot meanders without ever really reaching a satisfying climax. Which I suspect was the point, but still.
If you like your novels to be novel I'd recommend it, but if you were expecting a hammy superhero comic in novel form, it is not that at all.
>>
>>49686060
>but if you were expecting a hammy superhero comic in novel form
Oh no, I prefer my dose of that in the form of old school saturday morning cartoon shows.

Do hammy silver age type novels even exist though? I feel like nobody would bother bringing capes into book form without trying to subvert the genre in at least minor ways.

You can't find a single webnovel that doesn't have rape, torture, and other shit like that.
>>
>>49673863
Just finished it. Really enjoyed it, but you can tell the author wasn't too familiar with the Culture series. E.g. he only mentions the Sublime near the end, where that would have been the first possibility of the Chaos gods. Also he says in the authors notes half way through that he just read Consider Phlebas, the FIRST NOVEL IN THE SERIES.

Also he was missing and screwing up a fair bit of terminology, like calling Displacement teleportation.

Still a fun read though.
>>
>>49693121
Read blastron's retranslation first, decide whether you're willing to handle turbo's horrible English or not and then either wait for blastron to catch up or read turbo until the switch to Raising the Dead (not as good as blastron, but still a lot more readable than turbo) and go from there.
>>
>>49695921
I went through all of turbo, granted it hurt my head like hell when going through it, but I pieced it together through SHEER WILLPOWER

Blastron and the manga transl/a/tor actually know Japanese and English. Turb0 kind of sucked at both, and relied on machine translation to do most of the work. Also, Blastron has various notes about why he went with a certain choice of words (like Corruption Magic instead of Heresy Magic) but the manga guy is mostly using the same terms as Turb0.

>Re: Zero
Re Zero can go fuck itself.
I will acknowledge that the LN may be better than the anime but the MC is just fucking intolerable on the front of both personality and intelligence.
Personality:
I get that it's apparently supposed to be the point but if he's purposely supposed to be a barely tolerable piece of shit to everyone around him then why should I not feel the same? There is little to no incentive to stick around.
Intelligence:
It takes him dying horribly and repeating the same day 3 times before it occurs to him that there may be some sort of time loop involved. This child is so stupid that the background plot behind what gives him his groundhog day loops is an affront to natural selection.
Please , just, No. Don't recommend such a pile of dreck to anyone.

Prettymuch, although I'm not sure "doesn't realize" is the right wording. She understands that what she did changed something about her but she doesn't seem to have connected it to the hunger since she's always been hungry. The author also writes other WNs that are in the same universe. Unfortunately the translations are lagging like hell but it feels like there is clearly more backstory behind whatever specifically changed her than we already realized.
