working on a lizardmen army.
Trying to decide what to do with the Cold Ones. Tried adding a layer ontop of the base and wash for one, but I'm not liking how extreme it looks.
Is there a good way to fix that, or should I not bother. Or go for a sorta indian horse look that I'm getting.

general Saurus scheme I'm going for. Needs another edge highlight on the skin.
Not sure what will look best, a blue/green/grey sounds right but I hate buying a pot for something that minor, and I'm just drop the chroma on a Baharroth Blue.

Also, looking at the citadel guide, WTF their are three different green wash shades used.
I looks like camoshade is basically a mix of agrax and a green, but what's the difference between the other two?

Guy who painted pic related, my questions still stand from the last thread!

>How did you decide how much blood was enough blood?
>How did you get so much texture and variety on the metal? I'd really like to know this one.
>What was your weathering process for the painted armor bits?
>>
>>49659468
>I looks like camoshade is basically a mix of agrax and a green, but what's the difference between the other two?

Camoshade is, as you said, agrax + green. Coelia Greenshade is a goddamn lie, it's blue. Biel-Tan is a brighter green, less Agrax-like.
>>
I saw a post last thread about how GW's shade comes out really glossy and thought I'd offer a pro tip.

Shake it really well before using it.
>>
>>49659668
Beil-Tan = Green
Camoshade = Brown-Green
Coelia = Teal
Drakenhoff = Blue
>>
>>49659668
so if I really want coelia Greenshade I just mix Drakenhoff and Biel-Tan.
And there is no reason to buy the camoshade because it will just give me what I got mixing agrax+biel-tan.

It's a bit fussy getting the right mixes, but fuck I have basic color theory and I don't buy new pots if I can actually get that color by mixing. Sometimes you can't (experiance has taught me yellows and organes aren't worth trying because those two are primadonnas colors), but sometimes you can.
>>
>>49659774
I personally hate mixing, so the incentive to use Coelia is you'll just get the exact same shade of teal every time. Also I don't KNOW if shades can be mixed like that, but I'm sure they can.

Honestly, you're either taking two brushfulls of a shade each, or one brushfull of one shade. But do whatever works for you, anon.
>>
>>49659621
Also could you post a closeup of the dude on the far right? His chestplate detail is interesting me.
>>

Anyone ever done any papercraft models for 40k? I saw some pictures where they looked like the real deal and some where they looked like utter trash.

Been thinking of trying it out and making a tank or something, surely if you go all out on the greenstuff and paint it'd like pretty good right?

Doesn't help that the desk I have is yellow/beige either... I need something like a white or "cool" colored table place matt to take pics on.

I asked a few threads back about art supply acrylics. The kind used for canvas and such.

Well, I decided to go out and get a 12 color starter set of semi-professional tubes (liquitex) and test them out.
Texture is super creamy and viscous, not fluid, needs a lot of thinning to make it work for minis. I put a dab of the stuff on my fingers and worked it a bit, colors were super vibrant and seemed to have good covering potential.

I primed some Zombicide minis to test the paint out and went at it. Flesh tones, black, and white cover reasonably well, but the thick consistency can clog up detail, and once you thin it, it just doesn't cover that well. I tried orange and yellow, and I felt lie I was trying to paint the zombies with washes or watercolor. It's just not possible to achieve a solid color surface.

Drying is A LOT slower too. It seems it could work for feathering, shading, transitions and building color layers. Gotta experiment a bit more.

So, overall, it didn't work as I'd hoped, but I think I can still find some uses for them. I'll post some pics later, if I can.

>>
>>49660947
having also tried this, it works better with higher end acrylics, as the pigment count to medium is higher.

The desired thickness for canvas paint is much thicker than model paint, so they use a different medium mixture, and when you add thinning agents to get the consistency you want of that that, you're adding medium but not pigments, so the ratio of pigment goes down.

Canvas paints also can have a drying retardant in their medium, but you can buy that stuff by itself.

If you find a color you really like in the cavas acrylics and you can't find in model colors, see if you can use it in a mix. at 1 to 2 or less the consistency problems go down a fair bit, but you keep a fair bit of the tone of the paint, it it's a good one.

What's a good tool to use if I want to stipple things like liquid acrylic and liquid greenstuff? Usually I see people using crapped-out paint brushes, but I'm worried the gammed up bristles might be TOO irregular. Is there some kind of - I don't know - tiny, more bristly version of pic related, for something like that? Or am I over thinking it?

do you want it to look like natural (ie rough/random) stippling, or artificial patterned stilliplin.
if you want it irregular, the trash brush does the job, you can make it more or less random looking by controling how you use the brush. It's a textured and irregularly shaped tool now, so play around with you you apply it to a surface.

Happy to please. The color scheme is good, but the paint is getting laid on way too thick, and you're smothering the details.

I can't offer advice on thinning paints. I don't thin mine at all and they come out thin enough to look okay. Sorry.

>>
>>49661580
Just move the lamps 45 degrees outwards so the bulb doesn't reflect directly back at the lens. Small shade/diffuser also helps manage contrast and overexposed edges.
>>
>>49661517

What do those do to pool cue tips?
>>
>>49661719
liquid greenstuff has a very poor name. It is more like a really thick paint that shrinks as it dries.

It works for its intended purpose, but it takes some practice to use effectively.

If also needs care for it to dry smooth. The table top minions guy recommends using it to create texture on smooth surfaces.

Seriously dude. How young were you when you painted these? Did you have access to internet?
What paint/brushes did you use?
Are you disabled? (no offense)

Your stuff reminds me on my own very first 2nd ed space marines. I was 14 and painted them with all kinds of paint i could find in my dads garage.. and of course they looked like shit. But without internet and only one friend to play with (he didn't paint his minis at all at the time) i couldn't really know better.
I learned how shitty my stuff looked when i went to play at a lfgs the first time.
>>
>>49663721
You can use a small file (nail file size) or sand paper or a knife or other tools like a dremel.
Be careful if you do this with a knife..

Besides, its probably easier to get clean shoulder pads (and it will probably look better too because removing the U is one thing, making it look good is another.)

Maybe ask around in your local shop if someone wants to trade your Ultramarine pads with regular ones? Every SM player should have a fairly large number of spare shoulderpads.

THe only reason i can think of is lack of feedback because no friends/internet and/or doing all of them in a rush with next to no time in between them.

that'd look good, i think. the easiest way to do that would be a bright silver basecoat with lots of translucent tones of blue over it.

Vallejo has a pretty nice metallic blue, if that's what you want, called Metal Azul/Gunmetal Blue. It's not really iridescent, but looks neat. I used it on the armour of this guy (who has about 50% of the mass of the slaughterpriest, btw. Tau are even shorter).

This is funny to me. I looked at the picture before reading the post and my initial reaction was 'nice mini, but man that metallic is ridiculously grainy and low quality'.

Metallics should be smooth. If you can clearly see the metal grains then it's not a good paint. It ruins the illusion completely.

So this is my IG I have so far.

Currently it's a single platoon of veterans with command squad, two chimera, and two russes. Both russes have pegs or magnets that allow them to be any configuration except exterminator.

The chimeras still need to have their chocolate chips applied, as well as washes and general weathering, and one squad and the command team aren't done being painted yet. Only one of them is based, and one sergeant is currently being painted by my dad because I like getting him involved in these sorts of things; he's done this sort of thing a lot longer than I have.

The more astute eyed of you have probably noticed the demolisher russ actually has a panzer 4 model turret. As much as I wish I could say that was my conversion, at the time it was converted I had little experience chopping up shit so after I almost botched it I handed it to my dear pops, who made it work. Since it's more his work than mine I'm saving the painting for him.

The soldiers are all kitbashes using spare skitarri parts, wehrmacht heads, and sparing use of plastic tubes.

Some day I hope to have an entire regiment of these guys; technically two regiments, since I'm pretty sure armor has their own regiments apart from mechanized.

>>
>>49666293
They don't seem very cohesive anon, except for the bases and even then you've got lipped on some and citadel on others.
>>
>>49666257
I'd probably start with a strip at the bottom and cut out triangular (or whatever shape you want) shapes from that, then make every new layer slightly overlapping the last. If you use oven paper, you can press out flat shapes and cut them before sticking them on, as the greenstuff won't stick as much to it (I think, it works with other types of putty, at least).

If I'm working on a high quality paintjob, I pretty much start over on top of it and only use it as a reference.

Ash Waste Nomads is Necromunda 2.0 that was released for like a few months before GW canned Chapter Approved.

It's the gangs outside the Spire, in the ash wastes. It has a lot more options (Vehicules! Including a gang that is basically a caravan that lives in a giant sandcrawler-type tank... which you field), a lot less ammunition (Lasguns ftw) and overall better.

>How did you decide how much blood was enough blood?
I just splatted it on the weapons a bit then used the flick technique the GW guy teaches in the video, nothing special.

>How did you get so much texture and variety on the metal? I'd really like to know this one.
>What was your weathering process for the painted armor bits?

I got similar questions when I first posted my Dark Souls inspired miniature.
I'm planning on making a video on how I paint metal because I think it's quite a unique technique that isn't that hard but is pretty different to how GW tell you to paint.

It's basically less is more is key. I use the metal paint as reflections of light and let the black undercoat do most of the work.
Try to think of the metal as black unless light is shined onto it, and I basically drybrush it on, but it's so dry it's almost dust. Then I use skull white to emphasise the parts that are really shiny i.e. edges.
I only recently learnt about the washes range and how to use them, so now I use the washes ontop of the black undercoat and it emphasises the effect more.
I'd be interested to know whether people here would like me to do a video for this?

They're not flat enough, and the glossy surface sticks out. Usually what I do with transfers is paint a layer of watered down 'Ardcoat so I have an even glossy surface, then paint on a generous layer of Micro Set and place the transfer on and dab down with a wet cloth. Micro Sol plus cloth until smooth. Don't overdo it or it'll tear. Once I've ironed all the creases out I paint over with another watered down layer of 'Ardcoat, followed by a couple of layers of Lahmian Medium for a matt effect.

But really, transfers are fucking hard.

For a first try, having the miniature still looking like the model it started out as is a good start.
And it's still clearly an Orc, so you're past step one.
I would recommend more practice to improve your brush control, the highlights are a bit rough and blotchy.
A wash around his teeth and skin should help define them more clearly.

The rest really comes down to practice and familiarity.
You appear to have thinned your paints to some extent, which is already ahead of many people starting out.

Keep it up Anon, and you'll improve over time.

A backdrop like a piece of white paper or a white wall right behind the mini would help the focus and quality of the picture. So does better lighting not directly aimed at the mini.

For the paintjob, the colors seem to be where they should be which is better than most beginners. You can do little things like making the metal bits on the metal parts different colors of metal. By that I mean make some parts darker or just shade them with a wash.

So I have little to no experience doing conversions and I wanted some advice on a project idea. I was thinking about doing some command squad bikes for an Iron Hands Fist of Medusa list (to take advantage of their crazy FNP bonuses) but since they're supposed to be special units of veterans I figured they deserve cool models.

I've always liked the FW bikes more than the GW bikes, but the Mk IV stock armor they come with just doesn't look like Iron Hands to me. FW does have an upgrade set for MkIV that basically makes it a hybrid of MkIV and MkIII that looks alright, but I don't know if it work work with the bike legs (like I said, never done conversions before). The main thing that concerns me is the metal loincloth thing that hangs down from the torso bit to cover the crotch area. I looked at a few pictures of the Outrider bits pre-assembly and it *might* work, but I wanted to ask for opinions before I bought anything.

Also, the Outriders only come with bolters and plasma for special weapons, and I obviously need more than that (grav, melta, a Narthecium for the apothecary, maybe even storm shields if I really want to juice 'em up, etc.). Any ideas of what bits to use for this? I could try the FW grav weapon kit, but since 30k grav is technically different than 40k grav I'm afraid it wouldn't read well.

Either way I'm probably going to wait a bit to buy since the GBP is still falling in value and I'm in Burgerstan.
>>
>>49668105
Ke'lshan? Got any more pictures of the army? I've wanted to do that scheme for a while but it seems like there's not many decent examples for how to do the suits.
>>
So far painting any miniature, vehicle or character, you usually use a matte paint. Yet citadel and a couple others sell glossy paint. What miniatures would you rather have glossy paint over matte?
>>
>>49672347
Unless you can actually get your hands on 40k grav bits, just go with the FW equivalent. You're already using Heresy-era Iron Hands armor, nobody will fault you for it. If anything they'd look better.

As for the loincloths (a trait shared with the Death Guard, weirdly enough) most if not all FW bits are resin, which means if you just dip the loincloth in hot water for a minute or so it should soften enough that you could bend it with a pair of pliers. Bend it however you want (preferably at a sharp angle since it's an armor joint) then hold it for a minute or so for it to harden. Boom, done.
>>

Oh, duh, I totally forgot about that. Thanks, though!

Do you think it might be wise to do some of the painting before it's fully assembled? It looks like it would be very awkward to get in there and get the torso done correctly once he's on the bike/legs and has the arms out in front of him.
>>
>>49672409

Anything Eldar.

You could do a multi-stage assembly, but make sure you adjust the loincloths first. Know how it's gonna fit together first, but that's kinda obvious.

it could also pass as a modified MkIV.

Yeah it lacks the four exterior cables on your average MkIV, but it also lacks the extra plating of the MkIII. And both have that weird "can't bend forward ever" shape.
>>
>>49676054

>>
>>49676062
It doesn't lack the extra plating though. The shoulders depicted in that pack are for MkIV, yes, but everything else in there is clearly MkIII.

I agree with you on the chest pieces in that they could be passed off as modified/up-armored MKIV.
>>
>>49676091
>but everything else in there is clearly MkIII
Nah, MkIII's got a huge barrel chest because of the thick exterior plate bolted on the front. The upgrade chests are quite slim in comparison.

The heads are straight MkIII, the pads are straight MkIV, but the chests have elements of both and could passably be used with suits of either mark without looking out of place.

You've missed some bits but you get better at picking stuff like that out over time.

Pick a base colour to use for your armour, then wash the mini with a little bit of nuln oil this will fill in and darken the armour panels. Then use a layer paint to bring the colour back into the armour. Lastly if you want to do some highlights pick a third colour, lighter than your layer paint and lightly drag the brush across the raised area's.
It'll take some time but you'll get there.

Chaos Demons are fine, Chaos Marines are not competitive, but they can still work if you are willing to make them work.

Most units in the codex are very overpriced for what they are, and have to pay a premium for upgrades, but if you avoid spending too many points on silly things and list build carefully it isn't exactly terrible.

Loyalists have got a lot of new kits and free rules over the years, chaos marines got almost nothing. The Khorne Berserker kit is literally from the 90s.

But the Dark Vengeance chaos marine and cultist models? They are gorgeous! I wish GW would roll out some new CSM kits to match them.

Guys, I need help. I'm really, really, strugling to think of how to go about making a female skaven Grey seer.(Or hell, a female skaven in general, preferably not one of the mainly cannon one's that are enormous baby making machines.) I've just been struggling with what kind of body i'd use, as well as what type of head.(Rodent like yes, but not as explicitly fierce as your average skaven, and prefferably a slight bit more feminine.) I can greenstuff basic stuff, but working from scratch is a no go, i'd definitely need a solid base to work off of.

I've been looking through 3rd party miniatures to try and find ideas on what to do, but still nothing concrete.
Anyone have some suggestions?

grey blue is always a 'boring' color but they look nice regardless. there aren't many lame tau color schemes from what i've seen.

Yee, any tips on how to make them look like they aren't melting?

Okay, I perhaps should've mentioned I'd prefer it to not have 4 breasts(I'm not too concerned with "Cannon".) or look like a monkey.

Why... why would you want to make a ratkin waifu?! I don't get the mental process that makes someone want that.

There's barely any dimorphism between male and female rats. The "huge baby machines" of canon is because they're basically chained and made fat, they're not "born" that way.

Notice I said 'nipples', not 'breasts'. Also they should have six total, not four.
I figured she's going to be rangy and androgynous anyway, so it'd be a good touch.

Im not too concerned with the csm models atm since ill eventually get around to a lot of converting. Its easy to make nurgle look good.

Im probably going to fuck up my army list though. Last time i played a game black reach just came out

Anyone know of some 3rd party models for dreadclaws? Regular GW ones are freakin' expensive. I'm thinking of just making big things of smoke to count as them.

They're circular magazines, like in a johnson rifle.

That is a very good attempt, anon.
As for growing your waagh, I recomend expermenting with various ways to do leathers. I've been using drybrushing, starting with cadian fleshtone used sparingly, an ink made from rhinox hide, and ending with some drybrushed Ushabti Bone, and then some agrax earthshade.

For what reason? If you want it 'realistic' you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference since most rants wear armour.

If you want it cheesecake like pic related, then just take Lilith Hesperax from the Dark Eldar line, model a rat face, slap some cloak, rat feet and tail on her and call it a day.

But my best advice would be: Unless you are godlike with greenstuff, don't.

Well, adding a tail and such from other kit's or greenstuffing them, yeah, that's doable, the main thing I need is a body that is a halfway point between the average Skaven and a full on humanoid cheescake body like your pic.

>>49678362
This anon's pic is actually exactly what I'm going for as far as figure goes. (Though given i'm going for a grey seer, the attire would probably be more regal.)

Take the Grey Seer from the Screaming Bell kit on a rock or some scrap metal, replace the one claw with a book. Smoothen the face part, trim the nose bridge a little. Make the ears bigger and try to get some longer hair between it's horns, something like the Sisters of the Thorn have. You literally don't have to modify the models body because it is all cloak.

Neat, very nice color scheme, all the colors work very well together.

You can improve on the model by adding 1 extra layer of highlighting to transition from the basecoat to final highlight. Right now it looks like you did one basecoat and then one highlight.

Painting checkers is a practice in endurance and patience, it help if you get physically aroused when you put in the final highlight on the tips of the checker to complete the whole pattern. Here's how I did my Wyches from a while ago, it was a miserable experience but adding that finishing touch was like a drug to me.

Why wouldn't she wear rags/armor/cloak like all other rats?

But the human-rat relations are similar to being a jew looking at a hot radical neo-nazi.

Man-thing.

It's a possibility, but I'm still not sure. I'm still leaning towards the possibility of barely any clothes, and just now i've found some of Reaper's lupine mini's would be perfect for converting, the main problem is, i'm afraid of the scale, from what little I can tell, it's looking like this set of figures have 40mm bases(Not much to compare them too, so can't 100% guarantee.), at which point it's way oversized compared to your average human miniature even. ( Has Moulder Clan science gone too far? :V)

There is no joke. Like the gold, its future investment.
Metal minis won't be in production forever. (at least that was what people thought before that made to order announcement).

Wash them with a flesh/red-ish wash followed by highlights. Be a bit more subtle with their eyebrows too.. they are a bit "wild" for my taste, but if you aim for that look then ignore that last bit.
