>Party wants to run an undead campaign, where the main goal is to raise an army, take a kingdom, and create an empire

I need cool ideas for undead characters. So far we're thinking a Lich, with a Revenant as his champion. We're playing DnD 5e
>>
>>49647442
Sounds ultra grim-dark, meaning it will naturally be kinda silly.

What about a super-vain elf, who just happens to be dead? He spends a lot trying to sew the pieces that fall off back on, and keeps trying ridiculous new concoctions of makeup.

A dwarf who thinks that being dead just means he doesn't have to worry about hang-overs because he doesn't need to sleep, any more.

An emaciated human who makes up exotic races to pretend to be, to explain his pale skin and emaciated figure. Mostly he tries to pass himself off as half snow-elf.

I dunno... fun things.
>>
>>49647442
Vampires and mummies are good intelligent undeads who'd be interested in ruling things.

Not sure if it really helps but i was working on a sort of self Frankensteining doctor. He would sew shit to himself and others to heal people and shit like that. Now outside of an undead campaign that's mostly a down side, people start complaining about the idiot who keeps sewing girls to dogs and shit like that.

I was also creating a dwarven setra.Basically the greyest of beards and wants everything to be bigger and more challenging so the dwarves of the day will not be so weedy.

Right now i am playing an undead who pretends to be a leper to blend into human society (as well as a rotting corpse/leper can). He's driven to kill as many unthinking undead (he's far more lenient on undead that WANT to live). All of his shit kind stems from the fact he was a worshipper of the raven queen and just 't wants to keep on living.

>>49647442

>>
>>49647782

Gonna second mummies. I played a mummy swashbuckler once. It was awesome.

I like the idea of a mummy that's really, really forgetful and thus can tap into incredibly powerful, ancient magic in the off chance he actually remembers it. This is not a common thing.
>>
>>49647442

Make an avatar of anubis who is supposed to ferry their souls to the underworld but they just keep juking him. Eventually it gets to the point that this underworld middle-management stooge is telling the party 'Look guys, I know you're not coming with but it'd really be a lot better if y'all just jumped into this river of souls. Come on guys, for my job.'
>>
A couple games to look through for ideas/inspiration for how undead can be done as a culture and as actual people with a personality:

Legacy of Kain series (it's also an amazing story)
Warhammer Fantasy -> Tomb Kings/Vampire Counts
Warcraft 3 Scourge campaign
WoW: Wrath of the Lich King (if you read the books in the DK starting zone that sould be enough - if your google-fu is strong enough to find them all)
Heroes of Might & Magic 3/5
Planescape: Torment -> Nameless One and Morte
>>
>>49647442
have a bard skeleton that plays his ribs like an xylophone
>>
I don't know how this would work mechanically, but I imagine a rogue who uses parts of his body independently, and leaves them all around the place. Like, they would leave an ear or an eye in someone's room to spy on them, or send only their hand with a knife to kill someone in their sleep.

The undead can propagate themselves by combining different spare parts of each other to make a new undead.

I don't know about a vampire, but definitely a thrill seeking undead. Maybe they want to make up for their boring previous life or maybe they were always a thrill seeker and died that way.

Does a spirit bound to armor count as undead?
>>
>>49647442

Name each for bones in the human body.

The goal is to create an ultimate SPOOK.
>>
>>49655128
>Does a spirit bound to armor count as undead?
If it's a mortal spirit and not an elemental spirit or something, yeah in a way. The armor itself won't have the traits and weaknesses of the undead, but the spirit might grant it some special traits or abilities but could be exorcised.
>>
>>49655185
>Name each for bones in the human body.
Skeleton named Humerus has to be a Bard or a Jester

Whoops, I wanted to reply to this
>>49650808
>And what are you planning to do with your kingdom?

The story we have so far is that the Revenant's target is someone of royal blood, a king or something to that effect. The Lich, who had existing machinations to take a kingdom, makes him an asset. The Lich (and by extension, the Revenant) worship a patron of undeath (my DnD isn't great so I don't know fluff specifics).

Once we take the kingdom and (hopefully) continue the game, the idea is that we pursue death in the same nature that the living pursue life. Conquer, ravish, salt. But, that's all far ahead of us, we still need ideas to get off the ground.
>>
>>49655185
>>49655230
I think someone mentioned this idea earlier in the thread, but a court jester who was so good, they cursed him with immortality to entertain the royal family forever.

No one ever suggests a Mohrg. Those things would make a cool Barbarian.

The idea is that they are undead spirits of convicted serial killers but are undead animated by a weird outsider spirit worm thing. So you could go the boring way and just have him be a kill crazy bruiser. But you could also do weird otherworldly shit by having it consort with demons.

Or it could be a wacky goofball. Name him Shamus, give him some fake skin and have him constantly embarrassingly explain away his horrifying stomach churning as gas or something he ate.

Also if you want to get REAL, rad a Beholder Death Tyrant.

Or just go for broke and make yourself The Grudge.

Undead are always shown as being dressed in rags and with cobwebs and rotting flesh hanging off them.

If I was undead I'd take better care of myself, god damn it!

I want a clean freak undead Skeleman who has shiny polished white bones that are reflective. It dresses impeccably and decided to dissolve the last of its flesh when it began to decay because it was disgusting. It enjoys disguising itself as beautiful or handsome living beings and uses Prestidigitation cantrips to clean everything. I also has some cleaning stuff in its ribcage along with its valuables.

It may deck out its skeleton with jewels, gold and silver similar to the holy Saint skeletons of the old Catholic Church.

It had:

An intelligent Ghoul who wanted to try to eat anything else than dead bodies, but everything tasted like shit.

A not-so-intelligent Ghoul who the first Ghoul tried to teach how to behave properly.

A Skeleton Archer who had to constantly remind everyone of her femininity as she was seen nothing but a pile of bones.

A Spirit, almost invisible, whose only means of communication was writing in the dust, sand, snow or whatever. Could fly, was a Dwarf in his life, lost his hammer.

And a Mummy who was surely an important person, even a priest, who got constantly scared from his own Turn Undead.

So guys, what kind of undead races could possibly be in this setting and which could be playable?
I'm liking the sound of some Headless Horseman bounty hunters, literal head hunters and executioners.
And how would a Death Knight work in this setting? It would be intresting to play as one of those, a reverse paladin keeping the party alive through necromancy. Hell, a Necromancer literally becomes a healer in this setting.
