Achilles being invincible was never really a thing that the old legends focused on. If you read the Illiad, you'd notice that a lot is made of him being an unbeatable fighter, but as far as I remember, there is zero mention in the text of him being physically invincible. If he was, then Hector would never have agreed to duel him in the first place.

>>49581475

:^)
>>
>>49583337
It's incredibly annoying how the literal fan fic written way after Homer's oratory work became the common perception of Achilles. Achilles is not invincible, he's special because he's a god damned demigod and thus is able to destroy a hundred men in melee without threat, hack clean through cloth or bronze plate armor, and pose a big threat to entire garrisons. Doesn't mean that somebody can't get a lucky shot and manage to shoot him in the eye, or he faces off with another grand hero like Diomedes.
>>
>>49583401
Achilles is a fictional character, therefore he is whatever anyone says he is.
>>
>>49583485

This reasoning is retarded.

Just because a character isn't real doesn't mean a third party is justified in ruining that character.

Fictional characters don't exist, so they can't be ruined. All depictions of a fictional character exist simultaneously and independently. They don't affect each other.

Archaeological evidence shows they did. Arrows clean through armour, thigh, back of armour, horse barding, and into horse.
So does the written accounts of the battle of Agincourt.

Longbows were fucking powerful. Archaeological evidence of career archers showed that they were immensely strong, with the bows having upwards of 100lb pulls.

>>49585011

>Having fuck all to do with exercise and not being purely diet

If you can see abs, you are below your healthy threshold for bodyfat, broski.

They are not some kind of mystery flesh hidden away by doing a miraculous number of crunches, set ups, and push-ups. Literally everybody has them. You want to see them? You need to start dipping into the low body fat range to the point that you starting to risk damaging organs.

They look neat, but they are not a sign of good health at all and it is pretty stupid that we let ourselves on the whole get duped into thinking they are.

Son, the bare minimum would be an 140lbs pull. You'd get up to 200lbs.
>>
>>49585141

Don't be a dipshit and take anything I say at face value.

Instead go read up on what people who know their shit are talking about.

It turns out they agree with me on this though.

>Skeleton with no clearly defined abs

That is because you didn't have stomach muscles, broski. You still need muscle for them to pop out and be clearly defined, but the fucked thing is that if you have muscles that would be able to pop out like that you are usually training pretty hard and the rest of your muscles are pretty toned as well. The diet you need from that training usually covers up those abs, so you must starve yourself to get rid of fat to make them pop.

OR

You could take steroids out the ass. The vast, vast majority of models with well-defined abs just take steroids.
>>
>>49585060
>If you can see abs, you are below your healthy threshold for bodyfat, broski.
Not at all true for men, men can remain fully healthy down to about 3% bf, which is almost impossible for anyone but a dedicated roiding psycho or starving Namibian to reach. Really cut abs start showing up around 8% bf. So this is a lie.

For women however, it's true that anything below approx. 13% bf is incredibly unhealthy, causing hormonal disturbances and shit, and even dipping down to touch 13% is asking for trouble. Women should optimally not stray below 20% bf for best health. However they'd still need to get down to 8% to start showing abs. So yeah, a woman with visible abs is unwholesome as fuck, that's true.
>>
>>49585147

Women, on the whole are stupid about damn near everything, I have to remind myself that people can't seem to remember this concept.
>>
>>49585217

If you have under 8% body fat then you are underfat and it isn't healthy for you in the long run.

Everyone shrieking about the Iliad and how they're so familiar with the Trojan Cycle would do well to reread their copies. A major reason everything is unclear is that many of the epics are lost. The Iliad ends at the funeral games of Hector. It makes oblique references to Achilles' death multiple times, but it's in the general sense of "better to burn out than fade away."

So no, Thetis and the hearthfire (or Styx) is not "fan-fiction," and it certainly isn't a Roman invention. We see reference to it in the 3rd century BC by Apollonios. Rather, the references in the Aeneid and other works are references to an already ancient mythological tradition. Vergil didn't wake up one day and say "hey, dipping babies is a neat idea"; most of his work, brilliant though it is, was an already existing concept to contemporaneous Romans.

A country that doesn't have the same college culture as America. Our universities have no sports teams. And for all your snarkiness, even in gyms I haven't seen fit women. Look, the Katana was tested and found good enough to be adopted in countries that weren't Japan. They were also traded as items of high value and coveted as bribes.

Except it was shit compared to contemporary Portuguese blades. Or Portuguese anything for that matter, which is why the Samurai quickly adopted Portuguese breastplates, European cavalry tactics and the arquebus. It was a good weapon for the time and place, and even then mostly a side-arm to the yari or yumi.

>In comparison, English longbows basically were the Zerg Rush of their days
Not really. It's a highly deadly ranged weapon against lesser armored targets, which in the Middle Ages was usually most of the enemy army. Once again: a good weapon for the time and place.

Both weapons were simply good, not the wunderwaffen their cultures make them out to be. They could win battles (like Crecy, NOT Agincourt) and they could lose battles (like Patay).

From a historical point of view people often took torso and head protection a lot more serious than limb protection.

If you imagine it as a flowchart it would be something like this.

1. Get a weapon

2. Get a shield (skip this step if your weapon requires two hands)

3. Get a helmet

4. Get some form of torso protection
4a. Get neck protection if this is not already protected by your helmet

5. Get protection for your hands and arms

6. Get protection for your legs

So you wouldn't get fucking shoulder protection or hand/wrist protection without something covering your torso. Looking at you >>49581201

>Do you two not go outside and only imagine what it is that people actually wear.
I do, that's precisely why I say that many, if not most, women prefer impractical clothing. It's been like this since the dawn of time: the leisure class prefers impractical clothing precisely because it shows they can afford to wear the impractical. The only thing limiting most women is the weather, and even then nothing stops quite a few of them from wearing stupidly high heels.

Fantasy actually removes the limitation of weather because lol magic I can feel comfy in a thong in the middle of winter.

Factors leading to English victory at Agincourt:
1. French retardation
> The English were retreating, the French had cut them off, and all the French had to do to defeat the English and capture their King was wait, there was no forage available and the English were down to two days supplies.
2. Terrain
> The English were camped at the crest of a ridge with muddy fields between them and the French, the French attacked by leaving their own high ground, crossing a stream, and trying to climb these slopes in the aftermath of a rain storm. Naturally they lead with horse instead of infantry, so all the turf was broken by the time the body of the army entered the fray, and the mud was hip deep.
3. French pride
> The French attacked instead of waiting a week for the English to starve because they wanted to save money on their mercenary contact with Italian mercenaries who were supplying both the heart of the French infantry and the majority of their ranged fighters in the form of crossbowmen. But the French cavalry lead the battle because they wanted to prove they had superior courage to the mercenaries.
4. English field works.
The leading edge of the French attack was halted by the field fortifications that the English had prepared, and was pushed back into the mud and main body of the army by a counter attack by the English knights.
5. English discipline
> The English did not pursue the French into the mud field they had created until the French had finished exhausting themselves with several attempts to force an attack. Then they entered the field killing and capturing disabled Frenchmen too exhausted to resist.
6. You could maybe put the longbow here
>but I've got a strong suspicion that any ranged weapon would do.
>>

Of course given that includes a vampire, a solar power harnessing alien with enhanced durability, and...not sure who that third one is. Madelyne Pryor the Goblin Queen?

You didn't understand the argument.

China was perfectly capable of making their own swords in exactly the same techniques even. And they recieved plenty of other valuable and rare stuff from all over the world with the seal trade, yet they still adapted the Katana to a certain extend and made copies of it for their own use.
The weapon clearly had an intrinsic value that was completely seperate from the institutions that produced it, to the point where the pattern itself found more users.

Meanwhile, the "english" selfbow worked on the battlefield because the Plantagenets had centalized political contol on the island well enough for the next dynasty to spam archers like the Zergs spam Zerglings. To anyone who didn't have the institutions that allowed them to spam archers, it was just some type of selfbow that did whatever any other similar wooden stick could do.

It is, but it's used to sell fad diets or pills to insecure women.

Swimming is one of the best ways to properly lose weight. And it's good for you.

Also I wanna throw in my two cents and say that abs are almost entirely dependent on bodyfat percentage. BF% is dictated by diet. You can be a skeleton and still be 20%bf.

Abs usually appear between 12-15% for men and 15%-17% for women, something like that.

There's a much broader range of 'healthy weight' than most /fit/izens want to admit, which is (at least rationally) the point of contention. There's a lot of extremists of different stripes screaming on the edge of the conversation, but the non-crazy 'opposing' point of view is that many fitness-minded people have an obsessively narrow definition of 'healthy' that is frequently wildly inaccurate.

I know a guy who works out, swimming and weight, three nights a week pretty intensively and who eats healthily who would probably be considered 'fat' by the vast majority of the people in this thread. He is in great shape, objectively.

The point being made is that there is an unrealistic standard of 'healthy', and 'has visibly defined abs' is a part of that.

Obviously there are idiots on both sides, but this is the internet. Fuck do you expect.

I'm not a SJW and I still don't like chainmail bikini because I simply don't play that kind of game or like that kind of fantasy

Let's take, say, Tolkien. Magic and gods exist. Does this mean chainmail bikini must be possible? No, because within the setting even the most magical of armor is still just very good armor that can only protect the parts it actually covers. There's the Dragonhelm of Dor-Lomin that supposedly doesn't let the wearer be injured while using it, but that was made by a legendary dwarven blacksmith on the first age and like most other legendary items on the setting is an irrepeatable miracle, not to mention it's not even known if it actually works. Could the Valar or Eru Iluvatar come down and make your chainmail bikini actually protective? Not even the Valar can match the greatest creations of the lesser races, and the omnipotent creator of the universe coming out of his timeless abode beyond the world to bless your chainmail bikini is dumb

"IT'S FANTASY" doesn't mean anything goes

Honestly, it's just a difference in style. More grounded fantasy is going to have functional armor, restrained magic and a more historically authentic feeling.

Every state except dead also includes bleeding out, mangled, deathly ill, crippled, choking and a host of other really shit conditions.

In fact, given that perfectly fine is a small range of potential human states and decidedly not alright is a much larger range, occupying a superposition of all not-dead states still makes you average out to almost dead, assuming equal weighting.
