My problem is I don't know the rules of 5e enough. I'm one step above normie, and that step is that I've actually participated in sessions before. Never DM'd.

5e, if you gloss over some rules, and print their spells if they are casters is pretty intuitive

I would still advise against giving them full casters on their first session. Just give them a fighter, a rogue, a warlock and a monk, all level 1.
