I will admit Japanese based card games do have more color to them. MtG is guilty of doom and gloom sets that force their artists to use limited color palettes and conform to a more uniform style to give their worlds consistency.

Kaladesh definitely helps with that open, cheerful look they have going on, so you get more colors.

Supreme Real Dragon Soul's primary theme is being huge and big as fuck; the long name just drives that home.

It's a giant dragon robot made from five carsd stuck together in a V with stats that are physically impossible for most games. Subtlety is not its string suit

What is it with MTG these days and their not 100% fixed art style but the vast majority of cards seem to be of a similar style.

The concepts for the art is often good but something just feels, off about certain bits of some pictures.

Blood Artist here is a good example. The backgrounds is great but the character who is the focus just looks so ... I'm not sure. Too clean maybe? Something just isn't right with him.

Duel Masters actually has(had?) good art, but these are not examples of it. It can be more explosive and dynamic than magics more painterly style without degenerating into rainbow light effects and shit. Design is fun too, representative magic creatures are white angel, red dragon, black zombie, green elf, blue wizard. Representative DM creatures are white evangelion angel, red cybernetic tank, black zombie chimera, green humanoid vegetable, blue sentient water people.

I really enjoyed vanguard while I was playing it.

The problem with vanguard is that it was horribly misrepresented. The majority of the people that played it took one look at the trigger mechanic and said "shitty luckhax game."

People have a psychological bias toward familiar risks even if they are much worse. This is part of the behavior of people who are abuse victims.

Died to mana screw? That's part of the game, whatever.
Died because the game snowballed out of control because your opponent drew the necessary kill spell or ridiculous early threat? Whatever.
Died because you bricked hard, and your hand didn't do anything? Part of the game.
Died because your opponent special summoned a huge field and one-shot you? That's just part of the game.

None of those kinds of variance are a major part of vanguard. Vanguard doesn't have a significant amount of screw, bricking, or early kill combos, and it has mechanics that heavily mitigate those effects. Died because you refused to guard with one more card in a game where you easily draw 4+ cards a turn? Shitty luckhax game.

The lesson we learn from the design of vanguard is that people are not rational creatures.

Another reason why vanguard isn't one of the big TCGs is because it puts you under constant pressure. Many TCG players like to live in an illusion of safety in a tabletop fight to the death and they dislike a game where you have an average of six turns to live, and it's possible to die unexpectedly. A lot of card games go through a great deal of effort to design an environment that hides variance, rather than putting it on display.

Vanguard can actually look pretty decent when it isn't a mega-ultra-rare card getting foiled to hell and back while losing the bottom half of its art to the text box.

The fundamental marketing issue of vanguard is a culture difference.

In Japan, children in primary school mostly live within walking distance of their FLGS, and they have multiple anime TV channels. Japanese currency is also often handled in orders of magnitude, and their language handles nasty numbers like 40,000 in a pleasing way.

Vanguard is going stronger in Europe at the moment, but the USA is a country where the drive to your FLGS can be equivalent to traveling to another country in other parts of the world. As a result, the TCG market in the USA is older because everybody needs a car.

Bushi basically makes very little money off vanguard in the USA. They have no advertising, their tournament structure is designed to appeal to a market that doesn't exist in the USA, and the print runs of English-language cards can only sustain card shop microcosms and ebay-scalpers.

Vanguard isn't dead in the west, but small TCGs live and die by local communities. Your region might have 50 person tournaments or 16 or even 0. It's just like playing any other niche scene, like fighting games that aren't melee or SF.

You discard dudes sideways from your hand to block attacks, so yes, that's what's going on. The side placement makes it easy to stack a bunch of cards up and still have the shield values visible, just in case you want a ridiculously large number for some reason.

Elvish mystic, a one-G creature spell elf shaman is the same amount of labels.

The only real criticism you touched on is that the gorilla doesn't make it very clear where it belongs. Link joker is printed above cyber beast, which indicates significance, but the clan should really be more prominent. At first glance, the card appears to have two creature types and belong to a "star-nation flag" deck.

the issue with vanguard is, it is heavily luck based because triggers exist, and it requires you to ride(upgrade) at a similar pace to your opponent which requires you to actually have a correct graded card, both these mechanics suffer the same problem lands do in mtg and that is you can get screwed on the draw/check, not only that but damage depleting your deck work in a game like zatch bell where your deck is ordered for it but in vanguard its shuffled so it is possible all copies of a key card can end up as damage.

I've heard this meme ever since the melee boards opened on gamefaqs and I've never seen a real explanation for why melee shouldn't be considered a fighting game that didn't reduce to SF2 and GGXX^core dickwaving. The clip/magazine thing is a technical distinction, not a salty community.

Melee defeated airdashers in the west, it's a long lost battle. Deal with it.

FoW is usually pretty good at being vibrant while not being too gaudy and still being pretty nicely drawn. It varies from artist to artist, but the fact that there are multiple artists each drawing the same characters in their own way instead of one uniform style is just another thing I like.

These new borders are literal shit tier though. I have no idea who okayed P/T on the side like that and whoever picked the name font needs their eyes checked.

Granted it's not a big deal to me because I got out of that game as soon as it became obvious the devs had no idea what balance was, but I always thought the card layouts were the strongest thing about the game art-wise.

Thoughts on this upcoming archetype

It's going to be broken for a month, have cards that were obviously designed by a dartboard, completely invalidate every previous archetype with similar abilities. At the end of the month, konami will hit one of their boss cards, then they will be less broken for a little while longer. Finally, a new archetype will come along that will make them obsolete. When that happens, the old one will be thrown into the pile with the rest of the 100 archetypes in yugioh to never get support again.
