How would one make a Great Crusade era list?

Lots of MkII and MkIII, as well as a good amount of Cataphractii, of course. But what else?

Where's the cheapest place to get b@c in the uk, including vat and shipping

Book 1 let Fulgrim have great crusade options but they dropped the ball after that
Basically just stuff that canonically happens during the great crusade, so Primarchs are no longer factioned as there are no factions to take

Although word bearers would be iffy as you still have some loyalist elements during even the heresy I believe, and if you were running a great crusade they could only take the ghal vorbak in like the last few weeks of the campaign

I was told to ask here instead of the 40k thread.

I really want to get into warhammer, in space not fantasy, and I am wanting to know if there are any things I should avoid so that I don't piss people off.

I've had experiences in the past where it comes up that I am a woman and I either got into the game for a stupid reason, can't play well enough, or am just someone's girlfriend.

Are there any armies, cliches, or questions I should avoid at a LGS?

>>
>>49299186

Most people are more than happy for people to hover and ask questions, as long as you aren't touching models w/o permission.

Kill Teams is a small format that runs 200 pts max. (Normal 40k games run at around 1500-1850pts, Normal 30k games run at around 2000pts)

You can buy a box of marines for 40$ and have a decent casual killteam. Good way to get started.
>>
>>49299186
>I am probably pure garbage at painting....
Don't worry lass, everyone starts somewhere. Try to look up guides, and maybe in the future Saint Duncan of Warhammer TV shall bless us with a how to paint Emperor's Children video.

Also ask /wip/ for painting and assembling advice, and check out Warhammer TV's Duncan Rhodes and his tutorials.

Anon is more than likely referring to Herald of Ruin: Killteam, which consists of fan made rules, Zone Mortalis, or Strike Forces. Some say they're good for starting out, some say they aren't. Eh. Fun's fun, in my opinion.

For starting an army, you're going to want to purchase te Betrayal at Calth box set. Assemble and paint each marine individually and record your progress on the /wip/ threads.

Yes, however the official one is kinda meh for 30k, as in 30k units cost much more points than in 40k.

I see no reason why not. Storm wardens are basically the world eaters color scheme but reveresed, so there's no reason it can't be done for EC. And blood ravens give no fucks, wearing nearly the exact same color scheme as they did when they were TS before the heresy.
Basically anything can be done for 40k, the real issue is fluffing it so it isn't to special snowflakey.
And with EC you already have the perfect chapter tactics through the red scorpions.

Deathwatch are the Special Forces of the marine which are already demigods. So they're expensive pointswise but absolutely brutal. Small model count but high damage.

Just do what you want, read more fluff, paint a little and see if you like it. It all takes time. And yeah, definitely buy discount on ebay and the like. This hobby is too damn expensive for full price constantly.

To the point where they like to put apothecaries anywhere and everywhere, to kepp the gene seed pure. Chapter tactics wise, they auto pass pinning tests but can't go to ground or take camo cloaks, and any tac serg or vet serg may take a narthecium for free.

Betrayal at Calth is probably your best bet then.
150$ gets you 30 Tacticals, 5 Terminators 2 Characters and a Monopose Contemptor Dread

GW reboxed them for 150 for the Tacs alone

You may or may not use the Dread but Big models like dreads are nice to practice painting on and lets you have some time to get a color scheme you like set up and learn how to paint it.

>I want to see the rules on that assault cannon arm and I want to know how many I can take.
Twin linked Assault Cannon arm in 40k, I guess? And doesn't the Leviathan dread follows the "Relic of the Armoury" rule in 40k?
Srsly, I know the Red Scorpions (ayy) have a lot of 30k-issue stuff in their armouries due to being FW's pet chapter...but which is the canon reason?

I thought the "Fuck you, that's why" reason was already taken by the Minotaurs.
>>
>>49299710
The armies play the same, yet different due to their legiones astartes rules, Rites of War, and special units.

Fists however, are quite similar to their 40k counterpart, but have one of the strongest melee beatstick characters in the game, the Emperor's Champion, Sigismund.

I'm assuming you play/interested in Fists from your pic.
>>
>>49299729
Did you even read my post? The whole point was that practically every legion has a loyalist succesor. Given the precedent, there's no reason that one couldn't fluff up a loyalist successor of a traitor legion

But Fear to Tread's Audiobook version was so shitty I simply had to delete it from my phone, especialy since the female shipmaster, Horus, the aliens and the narrator all have the same fucking voice.
And Sanguinius' sounds like a tranny!

On the other hand, Butchers Nails...holy shit.
I still haven't deleted it, and I listen to it again from time to time.
I'm very glad those are Kharn's and Angron's canon voices.

Is that the difference between an audiobook and an audio drama? Because I want more of that.

Halp?
>>
>>49299787
Yes Audiobooks and Audiodramas are different.
>>
>>49299768
Fists are Vanilla: The Legion.
But really, they play how you want them to play. Every legion can play how you want them to play, so long as you yourself can make it work.
>>
>>49299787

Audio Books are done by one guy. Audio Dramas are done by four or five, so they;re always better.

>>
>>49299672
Angel exterminatus and lightning tower were amazing imo
>>
>>49299730
I believe they have their own forgeworld that still produces those stuff en masse.

>>49299768
EC are nice, they're a bit generalist in the same vein as Fists and UM but have more of an edge in CC so dont expect to win shootouts or prolonged assaults but rather pick your fights carefully because you want outmaneuver your opponent as you steamroll through his units and outflank a bunch of shit into his juicy backline.
>>
>>49299730
Maybe perfectionists keep their stuff intact and don't let the priest just drown it in oil
>>
>>49299749
Death Guard, actually. What are they like?
>>
>>49299795
>>49299801
So...you know some good audio dramas you recommend? Because I went to BL's page and it lists them together, and some merely say "Audio details pending".

>>49299850
The Death Guard favour a playstyle for a slow moving, but very hard hitting ranged army. Just like in the fluff, their rules make them implacable. Their famous endurance comes to bear, enduring in the face of both terrain and weapons that would lay low anyone else, being one of the few things immune to Fear in 30k they will keep going forward no matter what, perfect for attrition warfare.
Their RoWs give them access to a horrific amount of slow-moving but heavy-hitting firepower and, on top of having an easier time clearing out both tarpits and high toughness units due to their access to all manner of alchemical weapons, their characters are highly resilient and fill several roles at once. Furthermore, due to both their legion-specific units being Terminators they can bring the highest amount of them amongst all legions - Orbital Assault is particularly nasty with them fielding different kinds of Terminators in HQ, Elites and Heavy Support slots, all of them scoring.
That being said, they have penalties to Sweeping Advances and movement, but such detriments never applied to Cataphractii Terminators anyway, and almost nothing will cause them to operate at anything less than peak efficiency. Furthermore, a combination of Mortarion's army-wide Stubborn and/or The Reaping's Rad grenades makes them a dangerous opponent in melee.
Tired of terrain holding you back, Pinning getting you down, and want to melt your opponents using proscribed weapons while fielding scores of Terminators and Heavy weapons that fear neither Monstrous Creatures nor Phosphex? Then join the ranks of the Unbroken Blades and let doom stalk a million worlds!

>>
>>49299850
Death Guard have a penalty to Sweeping Advances, and love Rad and Chemical weaponry and Heavy Infantry. Both of their special units wear Terminator armor, with the Deathshroud counting as both an HQ choice and an Elites choice in the Force Organization Chart.

The following list might be rather sexist and highly offensive, so if the ladies could vacate the thread...

So with all the pictures of fem-primarchs posted lately, my brain conjured up this list of what trying to bang them would be like. Hopefully it can give somebody a laugh

1-Lion El'Johnson : wouldn't understand you're making advances on her unless you spelled it out to her
3-Fulgrim : VERY experienced between the blankets, wants to try everything (also thing you don't want to try)
4-Perturabo : Wants to be appreciated but doesn't appreciate anything you do.
5-Jaghatai Khan : always on top
6-Leman Russ : you constantly walk in on her being a bit too close to her dogs
7-Rogal Dorn : acts all tough, but wants to be spanked/whipped/bound in the bedroom
8-Konrad Curze : Mutilation.
9-Sanguinius : Always having menstruation problems
10-Ferrus Manus : amazing handjobs, bad at giving head.
12-Angron : always hatefucking
13-Roboute Guilliman : has a completely planned out marriage
14-Mortarion : always smells 'somewhat' unpleasant
15-Magnus the Red : It's magic. Deal with it.
16-Horus : insists on calling you Daddy
17-Lorgar : starts out prude, ends up starting some weird sex cult.
18-Vulkan : very good at doing the pounding
19-Corax : cries all the time (is that what emo's do ?)
20-Alpharius/Omegon : You think you're in for a hot threesome, but instead end up losing your official papers and not being sure what happend last night

Then Secutors would lose almost any reason to be taken. Just make them a bit cheaper, I mean, 45/40 per Thallax is a bit exaggerated, especially when termies not only come with 2+/5++ but also with a power weapon.

Perhaps 120pts base, 35pts per additional Thalax.

Also, make Empyrite's teleport deepstrike roll only 1D6. Nobody ever takes that option, and deepstriking in ZM (the game style this upgrade aims at) could easily lead to a mishap.

Choosing whether to play 30k (Horus Heresy) or regular 40k is important. The latter is more common, common enough that finding pickup games will be easy.

30k is even more expensive than 40k and isn't as widespread. However, it has an older, more easygoing audience. It's a hell of a community - there are podcasts around the world that all get along with each other and do what they can to spread the game (Eye of Horus, Radio Free Isstvan, Age of Darkness, Varangian Heresy...). If there's any 30k gaming at all in your community, I'd stick with it. Oh, by "easygoing" I meant that an apparently larger proportion of 30k players play for the narrative than to win. But outside of tournaments, not all 40k communities are hardcore competitive - they're just more likely to be. I've seen too many 40k armies that consist of very unlikely allied detachments. And since 30k is 90% marines, it's more balanced. (But also because Forge World is taking better care of the game than GW is taking care of 40k.)

The picture is the daemons that the Emperor's Children eventually join up with. But they're great before that, and in the novels a few resist the daemonification of the legion as long as possible.

Tyrant siege are outclassed by havocs if you want tank hunting as they have BS5, reduce cover by one, and can be given all lascannons

You don't want Golg, a close combat death star maker, in with a shooty unit like tyrant siege. If you just took Kyr Vhalen or a bare bones praetor warsmith then you'd save points and you weren't using those HQs properly anyway

Yeah sure play with what you want and have if you're facing a WYSIWYG fag, but you are going to spend more money on your army and this is just making it slightly more competitive

Questions.

Are Breachers good as troops, or are they still too expensive? Even when giving them a Graviton Gun and/or Melta Bomb? What about as a way to get Land Raiders?

Are Despoiler Squads good, or should one stick with regular Tacticals?

Is the Heavy Chainsword good, or should it just be used as a counts-as Paragon Blade or Power Weapon?
>>
>>49307150
They're too expensive and too fragile for their cost to be useful. In ZM games, where they get piles of bonuses, they're good.

Despoilers are great if you have A) a way to get them into combat, and B) some way of boosting your CC output (Rites, Legion Astartes, special gear). Dumping them out of a Storm Eagle makes a surprisingly potent method of clearing a tough opponent off a spot, a regular WE opponent uses 19 despoilers and an apothecary to clear late-game objectives in 2500+ games.

Little advice, /tg/ - I'm a very little along the way in building a BA force, but I'm yet to paint up all the tacticals, and the imminent release of BaC2 - MkIII boogaloo makes me think I might hang on until that comes out before I do, and maybe repurpose the BaCticals into an AL force (inb4 meme-legion, I want the challenge of trying to do the scheme in actual iridescent paint). If I do that, I'm going to spend an actual fortune, but fuck it. How do these two approaches to list building sound on the face of things:

AL - Build a kind of MSU anti-infantry and objective claiming list. Magnetise all the MkIV to use as 10-man tacticals, veterans, seekers, or support squads, get a few rhinos so they all have DTs (perhaps get some more of them). Use rumoured plastic Tartaros from new boxed set in land raiders. Future purchases to include the likes of a deredeo, sicarian, dynat, that sort of thing.

BA - This would be all about big scary things deep striking. Pray for assault marines in the new box to make a couple of blobs for troops. Use MkIII as support squads or whatever else (also magnetised for versatility). Buy a caestus to fill with cataphractii, maybe another flyer. Get a leviathan dread and drop pod.

Do these sound like two reasonably distinct and fluffy directions to take it in, any thoughts on stuff I really ought to take a look at for either one of those?

How appropiate, the flamer of tzeetch speaking about flame education.
Chem flamers could vary colour depending on what chemical they use, of course...but why are you guys thinking of them exclusively as different coloured propane (and propane accesories)?
I imagined them as Hollywood Acid™ projectors.

In fact the Grave Warden entry implies their Heavy chem flamer uses "flesh-eating Vasgotox fluid" rather than enhanced flames, while I'm guessing their "inimically lethal Cullgene gas" is what they use as their Toxin attacks.

And on Istvaan V the Salamanders' "pure flame met noxious chem-cloud".

Breachers are one of those units that look like crap but work well for some people. I have trouble seeing how, but they do... I guess it's about finding a good way to use an anvil. That means making them as survivable as possible and, imo, not giving them all the expensive upgrades it takes to make them a good offensive unit.

Don't take them just for the Land Raider. LR's are only okay; paying a 200 point tax to take more would be silly. Most people put Breachers in Spartans anyway.

Despoilers are fine, but the base 40k rules currently favor shooting and normal tacticals get Fury of the Legion. Those two things mean you need a specific reason to take Despoilers. The reason could be a legion-specific rule or rite of war favoring assault, or they could just fit your fluff better. (They're not terrible, else I would tell you that you needed a GOOD reason to take them. Being slightly suboptimal is fine in most 30k metas.)

It's Destroyers and Recon squads that aren't worth taking at all.

>"It is, of course, extremely toxic, but that's the least of the problem. It is hypergolic with every known fuel, and so rapidly hypergolic that no ignition delay has ever been measured. It is also hypergolic with such things as cloth, wood, and test engineers, not to mention asbestos, sand, and water — with which it reacts explosively. It can be kept in some of the ordinary structural metals — steel, copper, aluminum, etc. — because of the formation of a thin film of insoluble metal fluoride which protects the bulk of the metal, just as the invisible coat of oxide on aluminum keeps it from burning up in the atmosphere. If, however, this coat is melted or scrubbed off, and has no chance to reform, the operator is confronted with the problem of coping with a metal-fluorine fire. For dealing with this situation, I have always recommended a good pair of running shoes."

Ah CTF, such a hideous little substance, but it doesn't hold a candle to it's even more hyper-violent cousin, FOOF.

>“Being a high energy oxidizer, dioxygen difluoride reacted vigorously with organic compounds, even at temperatures close to its melting point. It reacted instantaneously with solid ethyl >alcohol, producing a blue flame and an explosion. When a drop of liquid 02F2 was added to liquid methane, cooled at 90°K., a white flame was produced instantaneously, which turned ?>green upon further burning. When 0.2 (mL) of liquid 02F2 was added to 0.5 (mL) of liquid CH4 at 90°K., a violent explosion occurred.”

Keep in mind, this is at 90 Kelvin, the boiling point of oxygen. (or -183C or -298F). TCF is voilent, but this shit will literally light anything on fire.

>Even Streng had to give up on some of the planned experiments, though (bonus dormitat Strengus?). Sulfur compounds defeated him, because the thermodynamics were just too titanic. >Hydrogen sulfide, for example, reacts with four molecules of FOOF to give sulfur hexafluoride, 2 molecules of HF and four oxygens. . .and 433 kcal (per mole reaction), which is the kind of >every-man-for-himself exotherm that you want to avoid at all cost. The sulfur chemistry of FOOF remains unexplored, so if you feel like whipping up a batch of Satan’s kimchi, go right >ahead.

Though admittedly, FOOF isn't literally toxic, it just sets everything it touches on fire or explodes it, and leaves behind residue that's insanely toxic and/or corrosive.

A planet full of FOOF wouldn't exist for long. Unless it's kept at 90K or colder it will spontaneously combust itself, violently.
It can have a "thermal run-away effect" at a temperature where oxygen is a liquid for crying out loud.
Nobody, and I mean literally nobody, has ever brought FOOF anywhere close to room temperature. It's way to unstable for that.

The 2nd answer in this thread covers it pretty well: http://chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/4624/please-explain-why-dioxygen-difluoride-is-so-dangerous

It is probably the most electronegative molecule in existence, the pure elements being worse, but only just.

After warming things up...they saw that...Keeping the reaction mixture for about 15 min at -64 °C resulted in a violent explosion that destroyed the sample container and the surrounding stainless-steel Dewar flask.

>Did I mention that this prep was performed on less than one millimole? Spirited stuff, that tetra-azide.

>The experimental section of the paper enjoins the reader to wear a face shield, leather suit, and ear plugs, to work behind all sorts of blast shields, and to use Teflon and stainless steel apparatus so as to minimize shrapnel.

>Hmm. Ranking my equipment in terms of its shrapneliferousness is not something that’s ever occurred to me, I have to say.

>It’s safe to assume that any procedure which involves considering which parts of the apparatus I’d prefer to have flying past me will not get much business in my lab, no matter how dashing I might look in a leather suit.

>That procedure deserves a closer look, though. You can’t just crack open a can of selenium tetrafluoride whenever you feel the urge, you know. That stuff has to be made fresh, as far as I can see, and the way these hearty sons of toil make it is by reacting selenium dioxide with chlorine trifluoride. Yep, that stuff, the delightful compound that sets sand on fire and eats through asbestos firebrick.

>>
>>49311280
There is only a single copy of each STC because complete STC's are AI capable of showing whoever finds it how to build whatever the template is for.

There's a book that has a complete STC as a major plot element. The STC contains the original Titan that all the other variants of Titans are based on, the AI ends up becoming corrupted by Chaos.

I believe its in the Grey Knights Omnibus.
>>
>>49312124

>>
>>49312132
Dark Adeptus is the name of the book, and it's indeed in the Grey Knight Omnibus now, I have the book on its own.
It's an STC Warlord, pristine and complete.
But after our Grey Knight protagonist explains to the AI that it may well be a daemon, it agrees that it may well be one and all hell breaks loose, literally.
>>
>>49311280
Realistically the only way an STC would function as a device capable of creating technology far beyond the normal means is if the STC itself has some way bridging the gaps in technology. That is something only an AI could do, literally walking whomever through the whole process of technological advancement, to the point where ascending tiers of proficiency would be second to only the power of the STC/AI itself.

We are talking Men of Gold level AI here, machine consciousnesses that have accumulated all the information required to create whatever template item they where designed for.

Imagine each STC as a fragment of humanities technological capacity, each contains extremely varied end products, yet each capable of bridging the gaps to obtain the end STC's purpose.

Now consider how much advancement comes from discovering an INCOMPLETE/DAMAGED STC, its displayed in droves, the Mechanicum is the perfect example, even religious zealots with no idea how the tech actually works are capable of using the incomplete STCS to revolutionize and advance swathes of their tech.
>>
>>49311962
>Maybe I didn't understand your post, but you're saying they'd stop me due to fear of me destroying a copy of the STC?
No I mean they'd stop you trying to figure out the process. Also although this is reactionary grimdark, schools of thought can change, and I think it's the electric priests or something which show the mechanicum is not unified and two strains of thought exist legally

And yeah they should be the same codex, but I think it went into development when you were getting split codexs from the main book, like codex homunculus covens and codex champions of fenris. Also IIRC FW wanted to keep skittari to 30k, but along with grav it was implemented to 40k with more broken rules
>>
>>49312248
Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't STC's supposed to be floppy discs that you plug into a fabricator
It then flashes on screen what materials you need
Sucks it up
And out pops a rhino
Or has that been retconned to be more grim dark

Men of gold are produced by the same civilisation that make STCs

Then it's the guys at the Klapötke lab the ones who are Reductor, and poor Derek Lowe is a M.Biologis assigned to record their logs.

>Today we have a fine compound from this line of work, part of a series derived from N-amino azidotetrazole. The reasonable response to that statement is “Now hold it right there”, because most chemists will take one look at that name and start making get-it-away-from-me gestures. I’m one of them. To me, that structure is a flashing red warning sign on a dead-end road, but then, I suffer from a lack of vision in these matters

>...even Klapötke himself, who clearly has refined sensibilities when it comes to hellishly unstable chemicals, calls “exciting”. Trust me, you don’t want to be around when someone who works with azidotetrazoles comes across something “exciting”

>...Both the initial communication and the follow-up publication go out of their way to emphasize that the compound just cannot be handled: The sensitivity of C2N14 is beyond our capabilities of measurement. The smallest possible loadings in shock and friction tests led to explosive decomposition. . .

>Yep, below the detection limits of a lab that specializes in the nastiest, most energetic stuff they can think up. When you read through both papers, you find that the group was lucky to get whatever data they could. The compound exploded in solution, it exploded on any attempts to touch or move the solid, and (most interestingly) it exploded when they were trying to get an infrared spectrum of it. The papers mention several detonations inside the Raman spectrometer as soon as the laser source was turned on, which must have helped the time pass more quickly.

>This shows a really commendable level of persistence, when you think about it – I don’t know about you, but one exploding spectrometer is generally enough to make recognize a motion to adjourn for the day.

>>
>>49312329
The STCS found by the mechanicum have all been damaged or incomplete, fragmented during the Dark Ages.

Their capacity to function as you described is largely in part due to their nature as highly complex AI.

Originally man kind during its golden age created three castes of AI.

The Men of Stone where tasked with construction/maintenance of Human structures and planets.

The Men of Iron where given the task of expanding the Golden Age humans empire into the stars, while genetic engineering was no doubt more advanced, the Robots where most likely the more efficient solution, considering the level of their technology and mastery of AI.

The Men of Gold where the ruling caste of those AI, the most advanced of man kinds works, designated with overseeing and directing the other AI.

The Men of Gold where either advanced AI in and othemselves or Humans who transcended their phsyical forms and BECAME AI.

Interesting stuff.

I think of an STC as similar to a model you can send to a 3D printer, or a template that a steel mill can use to cut and weld the shapes you tell it to. It's basically a program that you hook up to the right machinery and it spits out a product.

That way you don't have to know any science of engineering to get something, which is why the Imperium (and even the Mechanicum, pathetically enough) has stagnated in terms of pursuing science and, in fact, has forgotten a lot of it.

So I don't think an incomplete STC is much good if it's for something basic like a chemical. An incomplete super-heavy tank STC might be okay because you can fill in the gap with a piece from another known vehicle.

So, I just read Praetorian of Dorn.
Boy, was that a shitshow. Was this really written by French? I sorta remember him being a better writer than that. Nevermind that the whole book failed to make Dorn even one iota more interesting and makes a whole lot of material in previous books pointless, it's just badly written overall.

Significant clarification from Laurie Goulding in the First Expedition forums!

This is the Palatine Aquila: the one with the wings higher up with a rounded lower surface, and usually with thunderbolts. It was the Emperor's personal icon, though it did grow a second head after the treaty with Mars.

The more important thing (to Goulding) is that the III legion recruited orphans of defeated enemies, so by giving them his personal heraldry the Emperor essentially adopted them as his Children.

That was a separate event, which caused the IIth to use the Talon Spur as their legion symbol (they already wore the Palatine Aquila on their chests), and Fulgrim earned the epithet "The Phoenician" after how the EC was rebuilt with his help.

>I thought a SCT was but the blueprints and instructions of How to Basic a thing, and it was up to you how to manufacture it.
Pretty much. I'm just guessing that certain pre-packed, just-add-water manufacturing facilities had the ability to read the simpler STCs and do a lot of the work for you. After all, a lot (maybe most) Imperial/Mechanicum worlds are capable of building stuff more advanced than their understanding of science and technology suggests they should be able to. Like microchips... you need to know a lot to be able to make them unless a machine can do it for you.

The complete stc being an AI is in dark Adeptus. Part of the Greg knights trilogy.

The information regarding the Men of Stone/Iron/Gold is a combination of older comics in conjunction with citation from Dark Adeptus and multiple other obscure sources.

The Men of Iron is all old fluff.
>>
>>49313029
The STCS discovered by the mechanicum have all been damaged during the age of darkness.

While yes the STCS serve that basic purpose in their damaged state, in their prime they are highly advanced AI.

Check Dark Adeptus.

Camo isn't all that important when alien vision is totally unpredictable and any noncompliant humans advanced enough to put up a fight probably have vision-enhancing devices.

Raven Guard are an exception; they're the only legion sneaking up on the enemy en masse. That's when vision and camo matter. Once the war starts you can assume everyone's using radar, night vision goggles, etc.

For everyone else it's just a matter of pride and tradition. (Actually, it is for RG too - they'd pick matte black even if it didn't matter.) There are hints that all the space marines started out in some shade of gray, whether very light or very dark. Some started painting a shoulder pad in a distinctive color that later became the legion color (e.g. Imperial Fists). Other changed when they found their primarch, or (in the Word Bearers' case) when they found gods. It's just part of their individual background.

taking for example the Imperial Fists, the Black Templar formation of 30k uses almost exclusively black armor in contrast to their legion's bright yellow, and all legions have chapters as a sub-formation, many with similarly different heraldry

The warp is a corrupting influence, while yes they succumbed, the motivating force of that corruption is undeniable.

In humbling the most human of legions, the methods utilized require additional scrutiny. Pious as the Word Bearers where, their intent to rebuild took priority over their directive to subjugate.

They intentionally rebuilt planets, sowed the seed of faith and created worlds that wholly complied to the imperium, none of those worlds retained elements of descenion.

Through the raising of monarchia, the Emperor wounded the faith of his most faithful. Zealots as they where, belief in the Emperors divine capacity would have done no harm to the Imperium as a whole, but rather would have given the whole of man something greater to believe in.

So, is it honestly surprising that Lorgar turned to a different faith? That someone so divinely inspired would turn from the path he wholly believed in? The path he was made to believe in?

Nobody is wrong for turning traitor, each had their reasons, each could have been avoided.

>Through the raising of monarchia
Unfortunately, razing is the exact opposite of raising a city. I try not to be picky about this sort of thing except when it actually makes a difference. Other than, I agree.

I know some people have wondered about the point of Lorgar being the way he is. The Age of Darkness podcast brought up a good point – in many cases, the hardest part of conquest is holding on to your new territory and convincing its inhabitants to not hate you. It’s the story of conquered/colonized places all around the world (though it was a little different before the 20th century because nationalism wasn’t really a thing yet). Good recent examples are the Crimea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Kurdish territories in Turkey and Iraq… but I digress. Point is, getting conquered people to believe in your state and project is a slow but crucial job and it seems to be exactly what Lorgar was made for.

Odd that the Emperor didn’t want to use him that way.

And for all the bad rap the Word Bearers get, what would you do if you found proof of god(s)? Don’t we praise that guy in the Bible who was about to sacrifice his own child because God said he should? If the gods are real and they tell you to kill billions, who are you to argue? It really sounds like the writers of the old fluff wanted to show what’s wrong with extreme theism (as well as Imperium’s extreme atheism).
>>
>>49315943
I'd say he went out in his style. None but Dorn, his Huscarls, Silonius and Omegon know he's dead, and word of it will never get out. And now that Omegon has taken up his mantle, he might as well be still alive for all the galaxy cares.

>>

I accept that he died.

Honestly, I enjoyed the book up to that last fight. The Alpha Legion secret agent stuff was cool, as was Archamus’s story. I liked the glimpse into Lunar culture. But it was a tremendous amount of setup by Alpharius to bring Dorn to him in a context that was not going to make Dorn amenable to conversation. And there wasn’t any. Dorn, predictably, kept his blinders on and didn’t listen. Can I blame him? Not really. No one’s going to listen to you after decades of you speaking only in riddles. Alpharius needed to speak plainly for once.

So it’s his fault and very fitting with his character to get himself killed that way, but it’s still a stupid way to lose him. We (AL fans) barely know enough about our legion’s goals and motivations to play them on the tabletop. Throw us a bone! Tell us what the hell we’re doing.

>>49312893
There was no internal dialogue with Dorn, everything was seen from another persons perspective and guess what, the man of stone lives up to his name. He barely talks and shows little to no emotion.

The dude feels, his astropath sees the complexity of a single emotion going through his mind and sees he has a deeper understanding of emotions and all its variety. But he doesn't show it.

I liked the interaction between him and Alpharius after a particular compliance. It shows he understand were his brother is coming from and doesn't distain his tactics, so far as telling him how they could have worked better in tandem leading to the planet being much less bitter in joining the Imperium all the while letting Alphy do what he's great at. His only qual was that Alphy went out of his way to ruin the ruling cast, something that will come back to bite them in the ass later.

I'm not saying the book was amazingly great, it has it's short comings, but it's hella lot better than what's been put out recently.

Lightning tower was the best story featuring Dorn and is filled with him actually shows what he's thinking which was great because we see what fundamentally seperates him form pert.
>>
>>49314654
A lot of legions wanted to be seen fighting. Leave the camp for the scouts. I think there's a quote from the Red Scoprion chapter master who said he wanted his enemy to know who was coming so they'd shit themselves. There's a particular mental affect of seeing your enemies not afraid of what you can throw at them.
>>
>>49315850
I disagree, I would say that the personification of any Legiones astartes that wasn't a protagonist was poor to nonexistent. The Custodes weren't human like, Erebrus wasn't personified well, Korpartheon was ok, considering r was an actual human. Other than that, through the red lady we see a window through which un named astartes display characteristics that are human, paying homage, fielty and confiding in an idol.

That's what I would call an excellent vehicle.
>>
>>49316077
I knew it was razing. My mistake for the error.

I agree with your points as well, the dynamism of the Word Bearers in that crucial element of truth discovering makes them so like able, damned if they threw the galaxy into the maws of their gods, they found the true gods, they walked the path they always walked, seekers of true gods, ones held high above myth and superstition.
