To look cool, mostly. They were primarily reserved forfancy-looking ceremonial armor, although there's nothing really stopping you from going into battle wearing a helmet like that. It'll probably get ruined, since those kinds of decorations tend to be very brittle (this is actually intentional, so that if you did go to battle wearing your fancy horned helmet the opponent wouldn't be able to grab hold of the horns and stab you in the face).
>>49291904

See, it's actually rather easy to sculpt with marble when you know what they did.
Alot of people think it was chisel work but most of it was wetwork, slowly polishing it down into the desired shapes. Allows for good precise work and it's not that hard because it's tactile as fuck, but it takes forever.
>>49294256
They still used chisels to get the rough shapes though, I know that much. But man, people working marble must have had some pretty serious muscle from just polishing it down into shape like they did, marble isn't exactly the softest type of stone in the world

I'm sure it's present in a lot of cultures. It's just the Romans were literate, and we had a literal town full of graphiti that had never been changed by people living in it or disturbed until archaeologists got there.
I'm sure if you were to look in Sumeria or China or the like, there'd be similar shit, just like bits of poetry written by bored monks in Ireland or Japanese fart scrolls. It's not an essentially western thing, it's the human condition.
>>49297531
China maybe yes, but no need to downplay the West.
Roman Republic as with the Greek experiments was quite an achievement for a culture at that time. The Romans seem a beta version of more modern states, in a way. Dont take the comparison too far however.

There are ancient Sumerian fart jokes, and they sold alcohol by having pictures of women with big titties.
There are things that cultures do differently, but there are also things that are pretty universal. Things generally relating to sex/bodily functions are one of those things, and friendships/relationships are another.
>>49297585
Summerians are starting to sound like pretty swell guys.
>>49297561
It's less that Rome was a beta for modern states, but modern states looked back to Rome. Napoleon crowned himself Emperor, the German Empire was the Holy Roman Empire, stuff like that. Their influence lingers in law and art and design long after most of the rest of their culture's faded.
I'm not trying to downplay the west, I'm just saying the Romans were unique in almost all being able to read and write, where most cultures even at their height had a fairly illiterate population, so we don't have much graffiti. Presumably the Babylonians were because of Hammurabi's stele, but the city was well lived in and not much survives aside from rather dry business tablets with business deals. Though there has been a bit of fun stuff.

"Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband's lap."

East Asia isn't that different either. We have books and diaries that are decently old, and they tell of people who have similar inter-personal problems as we do now.
>>49297585
>and friendships/relationships are another.
Man, I used to read some roman-era philospopher's treatsy on friendship and he basically described it as sucking up to your social superiors so hard that their egos can't do without you any longer. It was very parasitic.
>>49297665
I think that has less to do with the culture of Rome and more to do with that guy being a shitbag. Think about someone like Epicurus, who thought that we should all live with our friends rather than our families because friends are the people that actually make you happy.

This extra mechanism requires those straps, and the disk protects them.
Most traditional pointy face helmets you see are close helms, but because the two look so similar people can often mistake an armet for a close helm.
