Have the events of 9/11 ever impacted your traditional gaming, whether in-game or out-of-game?
>>
There was the druids massed bird bombings of the twin wizard towers. One player couldn't keep a straight face, the others didn't get it.
>>
>>49288709
Yeah, we had to end our game early before Mossad's demolition charges took down Tower 7.
>>
No, I'm a 20 year old Canadian. I'm sure there have been financial impacts somewhere along the line, but no direct effects that you'd be able to follow clearly.

It's been 15 years, I think you guys could let it go a little.
>>
>>49288756
> you guys could let it go a little.
> Implying OP is from the US

He could be a troll tryin to get Amerifags.
>>
>>49288756
Honestly no one really cares about it anymore other than it got us bogged down in two wars

What do the twin towers and gender have in common?

There use to be only two of them
>>
>>49288756
A lot of New Yorkers who still remember it still get a bit broken up over it. Lots of people lost family and stuff, and the towers were national icons, but I think at this point we've killed enough sand people that the thirst for revenge has cooled off.

It's almost socially acceptable to make fun of it openly now. Some people are already doing it, that Mattress place got a lot of flak but everyone laughed.

In my part of the US, there's barely been anything to let go of. The only real places that haven't let go are around New York, because it hit hardest for them.

I'm sure there's been some scary stuff going on in Canada at some point, but you wouldn't expect a guy from three provinces over to care as much when something happens in Quebec.
>>
>>49288709
Indirectly, yes.

Before 9/11, most Americans (myself included) knew next-to-dick about Islam. Look at Al-Qadim for how gamers saw Islam in the 90s. That picture changed after 9/11, because the media began paying attention to Muslim countries. We really hadn't been, before.

One of the PCs went back in time to try to stop it. Unfortunately he only managed to prevent one plane from crashing.

The one he was on.

i have a buddy who used to get ass blasted about 9/11 in highschool. any reference to it and he had to leave the class or some shit, look away from the projector, or something. He never had any family members die in 9/11 either, nor has he had any family member die fighting mudgooks over seas.

also i plan on making a JoJo campaign and pic related happened in part 3

There are people who can vote in the Upcoming election who can't remember 9/11.
>>
>>49288709
It has really helped me as player, in fact I wouldn't be able to play at all if not for that day. 9/11 was my first day in school. All I knew of the US back then was that they owned that huge area next to our office.
>>
>>49288853
Well I was on 4chan making jokes about 9/11 before the second tower fell, and everyone laughed about it.
>>
>>49289189
Look at Islam prior to the 80s. Period. Islam was pretty awesome for a long time before murderous power-hungry woman-hating thugs took it over.

You know how people say Hitler loved Islam? Well he had every right to, because 20th Century Islam was a completely different beast from 21st Century Islam. One was pious people with great culture, the other is brainwashed and terrified people murdering one-another over nothing.

Remember when Conservatives loved Islam and Sharia because it was "tough on crime"? During the 90s you might even have heard particularly venomous right wingers say only PC hippy lefty hated Islam.

I remember.
>>
>>49289921
Islam is far more static than Christianity.

And it has always held The prophet Mohammed as the ideal man - a person who has more questionable acts to his name than Idi Amin.

>>
>>49289989
Way before, you had 18th centuries authors that talked about Islam without knowing anything about it as either an example of fanaticism and intolerance or a bastion of morals and righteousness.
They're actually talking about the catholic church.
>>
Well, when running games prior to 9/11 we always have to remember that you can just carry an assault rifle onto the plane and high five the pilot in his cabin during the flight
>>
>>49288709
I was actually late for my game that day because I had to go interview the local Disaster Emergency Manager.
>>
>>49289419
im talking about american caused deaths
>>
>>49288709
Not really. I don't think it's ever has any direct effect on my life, let alone my tabletop.

I guess I may have played some vidya at some point that wouldn't have gotten made if 9/11 hadn't made Americans obsessed with shooting Muslims.

Just look at its golden age, which sadly was shortlived and forgotten/unknown by most westerners (8th to 12th century or so)
>>
>>49294123
It's a shame, really. When I was 17, I sympathized with the victims of the Middle East and the true Muslims when I read The Kite Runner, then, Persepolis two years later. I've also seen documentaries where I learned Muslims pioneered much of science and mathematics.

Just looking at pictures of Kabul, Afghanistan and their women in the 60's and 70's depresses the fuck out of me. What could have been, today, if we didn't fuck with them and have two wars.

I'm guessing we'd probably mess around with Africa, or we'd start World War III with North Korea or China.

>Just looking at pictures of Kabul, Afghanistan and their women in the 60's and 70's depresses the fuck out of me. What could have been, today, if we didn't fuck with them and have two wars.

Yeah, the speed of fundamentalism is pretty terrifying. I know The Handmaids Tale gets a lot of flack for being a hippy-dippy novel, but reading it for the first time after 9/11 scared the piss out of me because of how plausible a cultural shift really is.
>>
>>49294230
Sometimes I wonder what America would be like as a third world country. Would there be a Christian Taliban?

Would there be crusaders running around with bomb vests, screaming "NON NOBUS DOMINE" before going off, women forced to dress in Amish clothing, people being killed daily by stake-burnings and hangings?

Before that it was the British and the French, and the British, Russians and Ottomans before them.

And just when things were looking fairly stable, it was decided that they needed to be shook up again.

>>49294230
Well there were a lot of radicals in the region even in the stable times - they don't just pop up out of nowhere, after all.

But that's hardly a comforting thought when you remember how many fringe groups there are in, say, the US

>>49288709
I'd love to see a close comparison of the fiction and media made before (especially just before) and after 9/11 - it's probably fair to say that the 21st century we thought we were going to have was permanently changed when the towers were hit.
That version of the 21st century lasted 21 months
>>
>>49288709
I was running a VtM campaign set in New York when 9/11 happened. Also, my group and I all lived in New York at the time and one of the players had a cousin who died.

We ended up deciding to put that game on permanent hiatus and went back to playing more traditional fantasy for awhile.
>>
>>49295362
9/11 was a Baali conspiracy to get America to bomb Assamite havens.

People don't seem to realize that only a few cities in the Mid East were ever that modern or westernized.
>>
>>49297001
Well there wasn't that many cities in the region to begin with, and poor rural people are always kind of shit, pretty much everywhere
>>
>>49297794
As an East Texan, I can personally verify this to be true.
>>
We played Tower Fall today (pretty fun quickie game btw - would be a great in-campaign minigame too).

The premise is you stack your dice to make a tower and it periodically collapses. Then mid-game we realized "Oh-- just for today at least you should probably stop making airplane noises whenever you add another die on top."
>>
>>49289570
My girlfriend asked me where I was when 9/11 happened. I told her about going to an eeril deserted college campus.

Then I asked her, and she said she didn't remember, but was probably coloring in first grade.

I can't say no, but I can't say yes

My setting is alt history so while 9/11 itself probably didn't happen verbatim, the world definitely had its share of high-mortality attacks to help it progress into the shithole it becomes.

That version of the 21st century lasted 21 months

Deus Ex (the original, not the piss colored one) pretty much predicted post 9/11 politics to a T. It even had an eerie future proofed backstory to it, as the New York skyline was missing the Twin Towers.
>>

I bet you people were saying the exact same thing back in 1978. Or 1956.

It was a stroke of luck that Ion Storm predicted the societal trends. But then again, it seems that 9/11 vindicated a lot of 90s conspiracy theorists, and then Katrina subverted a lot of them, especially the FEMA ones.

Not 9/11, but the Paris shootings did have an impact on one game.
We were playing as a Rainbow 6 style multi-national anti-terror squad, and were looking forward to a new mission.
Unfortunately, the GM told us that what he had written was a race against time to stop a terrorist atrocity in, you guessed it, Paris.

We all agreed that this would probably be in bad taste, so we suspended the session until he could get something else written. Sadly, he never did.

One of the main centers of post-nuclear civilization in our game is the reclaimed WTC transit station. It wasn't built until after 9/11 destroyed the original. So... Yes?
