I've recently tried replaying Xeen games. They've lost much of their charm, but I still had quite a lot of fun playing them.

Still, I don't think I'd recommend them to an average fa/tg/uy.

If you played them back in the day, they're worth revisiting. The grid movement feels pretty primitive, but it works.

Yeah, pretty much. World is fun to explore, location screens are still pretty sweet and basic game mechanics are solid if slightly boring and unintuitive to an unprepared player (as in one that hasn't read through a manual).

A better entry point into the series would be one of VI-VIII games, with my preferred one being VII.

Fun to think about though. For instance, the guilds are probably trapped there by curses. And there are probably few to no uncursed resources (look at the central wells) so you have these ratfuck urban nightmares where teams of highly specialised guildsmen, almost certainly all bearing minor curses and/or mutations, wage gang war to try and pry that slightly less awful food source or armory or well from the clutches from each other. And outside of the town in the uncursed wilderness you probably have another town or village growing on the basis of trading supplies into the cursed town for the looted wealth of the cursed town (which is dangerous, but a seller's market).

I suspect the grand curse is in the wells, and that the healthy two towns might well be healthy at the expense of the others.

Might&Magic's """"setting"""" is basically just a hastily made excuse for you to do RPG stuff and have references thrown at you, and they pretty much just made it up as they went along. It's the worldbuilding equivalent of a porn plot. The less you think about it, the better.
