Finally got over Fantasy Battle's death. Was playing Skaven and Chaos Dwarfs.

I'm thinking about moving to 40k. Any armies TLDR on mechanics, or just army type test?

I like the look of Tyranids, but I've heard that they pretty much always sucked and I'm not sure if I want to paint loads of models again.

Is there any army that fields few models? GK maybe?

I don't like Space Marines, only BA and GK seems alright from them.

Tyranids in 3rd and 4th were great. They started slowly going downhill and now only really work as a mid range shooty army, most units are very average with only 1 or 2 actually being good, I still collect them cause ive loved them for over a decade but still!

Marines, Chaos, Certain Necron lists, Certain Eldar lists and certain tau lists can feature few models

I've heard that Tyranids' only good unit is Flyrant, rest is shit.
My point is - their fluff is pretty cool, ultimate predator, but, not gonna lie, I don't like losing 90% of my games, because GW doesn't like my army or something.

Fantasy Battle and 40k are very different in certain ways. You only have to worry about facing on the vehicles, so there isn't a whole lot of wheeling movement to deal with, and units can form blobs instead of trays. No army really feels 100% or 80% like Skaven.

That said, there's a lot of shared flavor between Skaven and Admech. They both use Genetics and bio-engineering combined with cybernetics and animatronic tech. Between Skitarii and Cult Mechanicus, you can get a you can get a similar vibe to Clans Skryre, Moulder, and Eshin. The models even share the the steampunky vibe, as well. AdMech also has Jezzails and Arquebuses. It'd be fairly easy to actually convert your skaven into admech, or simply use some skaven minis as "Counts-as" Admech giving you a fairly unique army and saving you a bit of cash.

The mass fielding of Skaven is handled by a whole different faction, Imperial Guard/Astra Militarum (Or their Chaosy variant, the one-off "Renegades and heretics" faction).

The ravenous "They devour everything" plaguey feel is covered by Tyranids and/or Genestealer Cults.

I don't know the finer mechanics of the armies very well, but the fun, random elements of the Skaven army, as well as the patchwork jerry-rigged aspect of some of their tech, are actually most handled by the Orks. 40k Ork flavor is fairly different from Fantasy Ork flavor.

I don't know enough about the niche Chaos Dwarves filled to help you with them.

Hmm... If the 40k is much different from Fantasy, then I'll maybe list things I'm looking for guys.

-Kinda fed up with swarmy armies due to Skavens, would like an 'elitish' low quantity army now
-Specialised in something, I don't like 'we do it all' Scissor-knife armies. I want an army that is best in something, best in magic phase or shooting, or combat etc etc
-Xenos preferred, look more individualistic, I don't like Space Marines clones
-hipsterlike army would be also a pro for me, felt good playing Chaos Dwarfs just because of it's uniqueness

-Very few of the armies are swarmy. Really it's just the Nids and the IG variants, but Kroot are pretty cheap, too.
-AdMech are a middle-tier army. They don't suck like CSM, Orks, or Dark Eldar, but they aren't particularly strong on their own. They aren't really the best at any particular thing, and most people really only run one list (The War Congregation). They have an advantage in that ANY Imperial faction counts as Battle Brothers, so if you wanted to make it feel a little different, more than half of the hobby's armies can ally right in. There are like 10 varieties of space marine, and you could have a few units of any particular one, or some sisters, or some IG. Any Imp faction can be Battle Brothers with any other Imp Faction.

Tau are good at shooting and overwatch. They are reasonable at defending against assaults, but are generally bad at assault. They're in the upper tiers right now, with Space MArines and below Eldar. They have some cheap-units that no one would really like to see, but they they also have "Hipster units" like any of their tanks or fliers or kroot. Most people tend to play gunline or Riptide Spam, but there are other ways to play them.

Hipsterlike- You could always pull out an old Squat codex, which is technically legal. Or you could be Sisters of Battle.

Sisters of Battle, Imperial Guard Armored Battlegroup, and Eldar Corsairs are all good mid-level armies that field relatively few models. Tanks can be a bit problematic in low-point games, but by 1500 points, everyone should be bringing enough anti tank weaponry to even out the odds.

I would think Necrons are awake during 30k. I remember reading about some Necron special character that watched the heresy play out. Nids and Tau would definitely be out however.

If you're willing to have a look at Tau, I'd recommend a Farsight Enclave army for you. This is a sub-faction that focusses on using tough, mobile and shooty (but relatively small) battlesuits called XV8s as their mainline troops.

Each XV8s can be kitted out with anything from plasma (for armoured troops), melta (for heavy vehicles), missiles (for light vehicles), burst cannons (for hordes) and more. This makes them one of the most versatile basic troops in the game and since they're more expensive than most others, you'll have fewer models to paint.

Not sure if this is up your alley, but you can convert your Skaven into a Heretics & Renegades army. Heretics & Renegades are one of the Forgeworld armies (Which doesn't actually require Forgeworld models) that are super your dudes. They range from traitor guard regiments to abhuman hordes, the latter of which would be a perfect way to fluff your Skaven. They have lots of horde-tarpit units as well, so if you want a swarm they are great. If you want an army where you only have a few models as you specified then not so much.

Remember anon, if it was Great Crusade, it would just be Eldar. Well, more like a mix of Eldar and DEldar into one faction.

Orkz would be wildly different, being smarter than they are now, and not having any of the clans. Iirc, one Ork empire actually had better plasma than Ryza.

I always play SoB with Melta as the primary weapon. S8 and you can take two per squad, so it functions pretty well as a stand-in for the lack of Plasma. Basically you trade the ability to shoot at 12-24" range for not killing yourself and wrecking the shit out of vehicles.

Overall they're not hugely strong, but they're actually pretty good at fucking up Space Marines (who account for something like 70-80% of the playerbase). My SoB all comers list wins more often than not against Space Marines, although there's just no way to deal with all-out cheese (max Grav skyhammer/BC).
