The dragon version of Charm Caster still has her color scheme and even retains her heart motif and the curling stripes on the jacket, while still l having her charms on her chest and around her neck. That isn't just a generic dragon design, but one that evokes the human Charm Master's design. It is recognizabley Charm Chaster, just obviously a monster form.

And it's done the same way in what that's clearly referencing, Maleficent's dragon form in Sleeping Beauty. Her hat is the same as the horns of the dragon form, and the purple and black cloak evokes the shape of the dragon. And both forms have the same colors.

It's kind of a staple isn't it? There's the JRPG-style joke that something goes "Sexy>Giant Monster> Giant disgusting monster> Super attractive/perfect humanoid being" (which is interesting that it usually occurs via killing each preceding form, it'd make more sense if a fight was a race to reach the villain at the end of a hallway or something and when you got to them you had to fight them at whatever stage of transformation they were at).

I mean, it's basically the definition of the "wolf in sheeps clothing" deal right, as well as the "you were prepared to fight a weak little mage? Well I'm a dragon now, so have fun with that strategy.".

From a story perspective, it's a bit more work to make a fight against a roughly human opponent memorable. If it's a boss fight they've probably fought before, or have fought other's with similar fighting styles up to this point. If you want a memorable "climactic battle" as opposed to "memorable villain", then something has to change from previous encounters in a way that doesn't just make things frustrating.

Tabletop-wise it can just be the fight going well though, the memorable fight with the female sorceress who didn't turn into a dragon? The party was hunting her for a while and had scrolls or counterspell and wands of magic missile to burn through spells slots, and cornered her by appealing to her pride and betting the party wizard's spellbook on a 1-on-1 duel (blatant lies) that they then interfered with.

on the other hand, that maleficent fight in KH1.5 was a bitch and fuck that, it wasn't even fun by the end of it.

Nope, The SRD make an explicit note that no animal can have an Int higher than a two, actually after a quick glance of my monster manual, the book also explicitly says an animal can only have an intelligence of one or two within the first couple of pages. The Dungeon Masters guide also states anything with an Int of three or higher does not have an animal like intelligence

Now I wanna play a Paladin whose main method of defeating enemies is being so durable he can maintain a conversation while getting slapped around by dragons, gods and giants. Eventually the entity stops hitting him just to see what he has to say.

He then unveils he was max cha + con build all along and asks the monster to discuss its ethics over tea. The eventual goal being to come to an agreement with regards to: killing, eating and murdering humans. The knight would present his argument cleanly and calmly, and a spirited debate would ensue.
