Can you make money contributing to your hobby? Will people pay you for making settings, adventures, or other such content? Is it feasible, or just a pipe dream?
>>
It's mostly a pipe dream. If you get in there and talk with other people in the industry, put in the work, and get lucky, you might be able to make some money as an indie publisher or get hired by some publisher or another and work for peanuts.
>>
>>48925207
Yeah just release a lot of it. I know a guy that does nothing but release 99 cent d100 tables online, but he puts out so many of them every week that the passive income is in hundreds per month after doing it for a few years.
>>
>>48925244

He also offers people 30 cent per sale using his label if they make a d100 table he approves of
>>
>>48925207
>Can you make money contributing to your hobby?
Yes.

>Is it money you can live on as the sole income?
Well, no. Unless you start drawing commissions of assorted furfaggotry.
>>
>>48925207
>find something you do well
>something other people don't do as well
>charge to do it for them

>Is it a pipe dream

Now you're waking up, child. The best means of income don't involve a paycheck.

I regularly sell terrain for wargames/settings/backdrops/models/terrariums.

It's not sustaining, but if you invest into something like mass-scale casting, it could be.
>>
Can someone? Yes, look at companies that have full time staff. Can I? No, I don't write good enough.

>Can you make money contributing to your hobby?
If a tabletop-RPG-producing company hired me, they'd probably pay me very little for data-analytics stuff. Most likely livable, but fuck that, I'd rather work for an industry that will pay me what I'm worth.

Besides, I'd rather keep work and play separate. I don't want my hobby to turn into work.

I'm gearing up to give miniature production a shot. Got one finished and a few in the works, and If I can figure out in-home casting, then I can probably make a little cash on the side.

There's money in stuff because the physical so far obeys supply and demand, while the digital can be copied infinitely or effectively infinitely. Blah blah 3D printers, but so far they're hamstrung by resolution, material, cost, and niche interest. That may change but for now the physical is more highly valued because it's limited in quantity and tangible in substance.

You could combine the two by making the written form into an artifact in and of itself. A short adventure, interesting location, or event written on a tiny scroll or folded paper, maybe complete with a map or designed like an invitation to an event, or maybe a journal page that details some neat events. You could fit that along with some cards that detail interesting or mundane items for the adventure, or even some that contain short descriptions of interesting NPCs or monsters you come across. Then you package it all in an envelope folded like an adventurer's backpack, and sell it as an individual little treat someone can pick up on a few bucks for some entertainment.

Depends how many times you can reskin a shit system and sell it to gullible rubes.

Technically speaking I AM being paid for my hobby. I'm running tabletop corner in local youth centre.
And writing modules is a thing, just don't expect making more than pocket change from it.

If you can draw, you can make a living doing art and porn for people, but that's hardly "hobby related"
>>

>"star designers"

>contributing to your hobby.

If you got what it takes, you can make a living creating adventures, settings and systems. But that dream is pretty much unfeasable.

But you can contribute to your hobby by working in a hobby related store and doing your job well, which is pretty realistic. This, along with being an artist (which can be somewhat hobby related, creating terrain and painting minis for others - as well as drawing stuff) is probably the best shots at making a living off something hobby related. But it requires some level of talent, too.

I'd pay good money to play a game that was built around Nigel Findley, Robert Derie, William Gibson, Hideaki Anno and Andrzej Sapkowski. Maybe managed and printed by the guys who did Alpha Omega. No idea who you'd dig up for the crunch, though.
>>
>>48925244
What the hell does he put on all these tables?
>>
>>48925306
>draw for furfags.
I have considered doing this. Would be nice to have work from home money.

patrician taste, anon

Hi, I'm representing Activision-Blizzard and we'd like to hire you.

>implying Blizzard has any writers except for Metzen
>>
>>48925306
Doing furry art is incredibly lucrative, but I recommend doing it under a pseudonym so you don't get permanently associated with the community (unless you don't mind).
>>
I have plans for the future as a drawfag and writefag, but I appreciate the likelihood anything will come of it.
My friend and cousin revolutionized a tiny aspect of the gaming industry and still imploded.
In the meantime, I hone my skill creating content for anonymous strangers.
>>
>>48932126
Is unlikelihood a real word? I meant that.
>>
>>48932085
>Implying metzen isn't a single entity comprised of a thousand starving word-slaves in China.
>>
>>48932202
There is no Metzen, but we all are Metzen.

In order to get past the HR in a game company you need to prove you don't act, look or think like someone from /tg/. Depending in the person doing the interview you need to be either a living embodiment of an MTV commertial break, or look serious enough to work night shifts for the ER. Small companies and new industries often have bloated and unrealistic requirements for hiring people because of a combination of factors.
All this pretty much guarantees that anyone who gets past the HR is completely and utterly incompetent. Actually, the incompetent ones are good (compared to drama queens and non contributors), since they can still be trained and indoctrinated to the point where they produce useful work.

It is a small industry that's hard to get into if you have no connections, and the pay is unreliable and below average.
This is assuming you have American or British citizenship or similar. If you aren't from a first world country the only thing you can realistically make money on is doing comission work. In this case, you will get paid less and get worse conditions simply based on where you're from.
>>
>>48932117
This can permanently ruin your chances of getting and holding onto a real job.
And everyone's gonna know it's you based on your nickname or draw style.

Yes. I make art, mostly portraits. I don't live solely on it because I don't want to draw futa furshit in large quantities. Small quantities are fine.
I also occasionally make some shekels via writing and modules, but those are rare opportunities.

Overall, sure, give it a shot, but don't expect that to become your only job anytime soon.

This anon gets it.
