I've always liked the idea of rewards such as investments, properties, estates and the likes. Something I can rp-wise build of and manage and generally dick around with in between sessions.

For example any class can take on an estate to run, if th GM was fine with it I would design everything from a coat of arms, staffing, holdings and if I could, direct what I expect of them in a roleplay fashion. I do it in the hopes that the GM likes to see it and would enjoy seeing a player offer them something creative back.

My last player got a major magical Item and bought a small cabin with lots of acrage 6 miles outside of town to do druidly things in. The wizard has a dimension door hooked up to the tool shed and goes off to study for days at a time. But always makes it back in time for the next adventure. While the house owner sleeps in the side room that resembles more of a sun room. She meditates by a tree every morning until the paladin inturupts her with a cup of coffee. Then they talk about life under the tree till they see the cleric out feeding chickens and his hound. The barbarian wakes up around 9am and ushers in the harder chores to do with the paladins help. By noon the rouge wakes up and whines about his hangover, only to dismiss himself from doing chores. Before a late dinner, the druid and the Barabrain race around the lake on horse back as the cleric and paladin pray. The wizard will stumble out of his door covered in ash and smelling of burnt hair. The theif will yell and hollar about the barbarians poor riding skills as dinner is served. Barb will pull out a board game as the wizard uncorks more wine. Laughs, jest s, and sharp tongued comments about mothers will fly as the game carries on into the night.

How does the average PC compare with a peasant's usual marriage options?

On the one hand, a successful adventurer could retire pretty rich, or at least leave a significant sum for his widow and her family if he doesn't make it to retirement.

On the other hand, they're adventurers. It's unlikely they could accomodate a wife, considering their mobile (and dangerous) lifestyle, and I'd imagine adventurers have a crappy reputation (considering all the CN asshole rogues), and anyone with a grudge against the PCs could easily use such a connection to their advantage.

Her family shrugged and dressed her up, and then she said as she was leaving "today they're going to baptize me!"

Turns out the teacher was a fundamentalist christian and was having all the kids baptized. Which actually when I learned about Christianity later turns out to be a big no-no (unlike with some catholics or mormons). You're supposed to only be baptized if you're actually a believer and not being tricked into it. At least w/ that denomination.

Anyway the parents freaked out. Her dirtbag father for once earned his keep and got into a shouting match with the teacher, kept the girl from having to be dragged along to be forcibly converted by a government employee.

Where do I start?

The Red Scare was real, that's true. In fact, with the release of the VENONA intercepts and the Mitrokhin Archive, it turns out now that the soviets really were infiltrating American society on a vast scale. The Cambridge Five weren't framed, nor was Alger Hiss, nor were the Rosenbergs or Klaus Fuchs. We now know their code names, the names of their handlers, how they were recruited and what they provided. Walter Duranty of the New York times had spent ten years writing pulitzer prize-winning articles about how the stories about Stalin's purges and slave labor camps were all lies-- we know now that he was doing so as a communist agent rather than as an honest reporter.

But with all that said, the Red Scare really was a thing, and many innocent people were blacklisted. Let's get some context. HUAAC was founded to find supposed secret nazis infiltrating America in the 1940's; most of the people found and blacklisted turned out later to be innocent and were being framed as political payback. HUAAC was used the same way by Republicans on Democrats in the 1950's.

MAD was *not* a thing in the 1950's. The Soviets had the Bomb but no way to deliver it until the 60's. MAD didn't kick in until the very early 1960's with the Cuban Missile Crisis. The 50's saw Korea and the Suez Crisis, which were much more conventional confrontations. The 60's started with some very scary nuclear shit, which is why the anti-war movement got so big and so popular so fast, and that's how the antiwar democrats replaced the WW2 generation in the 70s.

Anti-immigrant sentiment was far higher in the 1800's with the Know-Nothing movement. It was pretty tame by the 1950's. What changed was the popular attitude towards ethnic prejudice. It was less common, but more noticeable because for the first time it wasn't respectable.

This is the case with racism, too, which is how the civil rights movement got so much traction so quickly. The real victory of the civil rights movement was thanks to Harry Truman integrating the military in the late 40's. That military integration, combined with the shared sacrifice of WW2, created the moral case for racial integration.

Racism was far, far worse in the early 1900's. President Woodrow Wilson was a supporter of the KKK. I mean, as in, openly. In addition to being a vicious racist himself. The eugenics movement (on the American Left!) supported the anti-miscegenation laws and went a step further to demanding that the government undertake the forcible sterilization of racial undesirables as a way to fight "genetic pollution". That movement included Margaret Sanger (founder of Planned Parenthood) and other luminaries of the Left. It culminated in the Supreme Court decision Buck vs Bell, which ruled that the government could forcibly sterilize undesirables as a social hygiene measure.

By the 50's, all that had gone down the memory hole. The then-Republican north was already partially integrated. The reason Supreme Court decisions against racial segregation were possible was that public support for racism was falling away everywhere but the South.

Finally, for a generation that had just endured 20 years of unbelievably bloody global war and Depression, the 50's were a welcome return to prosperity and peace and normality. There's a reason most of the TV from that era was calm and gentle and sedate. People had been through a generation of Hell and were glad to be bored and morally unambiguous.

So basically you're entirely wrong. There are better decades than the 50's. I personally would have loved the 1920's and I miss the dot com boom and TTRPG action of the 1990's, but the 50s weren't bad.

Mitrokhin was the KGB archivist in the 70s and 80s. He made secret copies of tens of thousands of KGB files. When the Soviet Union fell apart, he defected to Britain in the chaos, taking the archive with him. They spent ten years keeping the secret, catching dozens of still-active spies. Then finally the Russians figured out what was happening.

So at that point they turned over the archive to the chairman of cambridge's history department and he and Mitrokhin started publishing books about the KGB's history. The Sword and the Shield is the most famous-- very dry but extremely detailed.
