Also I kind of wanted to use wolfmen too, but I feel bad about it because I also want my setting to have generic beastmen creatures that can and do rape everything to produce more of themselves. It would be somewhat redundant to have both beastmen and wolfmen, unless the wolfmen were some kind of 'racially pure' strain of beastmen maybe.

I think it can work, but the real problem is that adding a race in general can easily come off as forced. Particularly when there's already a bunch of them to work with.

I've kind of been wondering why DnD doesn't bother with more focus on a "beastmen" style race since it feels like they're more and more of a thing in trash fantasy these days. There's really only shifters and catfolk from what I remember

That's kind of what I mean though. Instead of their being a clear "beastmen" race there's a bunch of random races scattered around a few books. I'm just surprised that lizard tits and demon-spawn made it into the core books first (for better or worse), when considering the presence of animal people in fantasy compared to those. My gnolls are based on the Rabari, an ethnic group which is situated between Indians and Kazakhs. They are matrilineal and men tend to have lower status within the group. Plus imagining a hyena women looking like pic related pleases me.

And hyenas used to have a strong presence within western asia, so I still fall afoul of those pesky little category boxes

Well, I think dragonborn were supposed to be the "BRAND NEW" race to show off how much more Dungeon-y and Dragon-y 4e was, so they were made Core to show them off better, and that carried into 5e. Tieflings made Core because people wanted their badass half-demon something-or-others, and Wizards figured they might as well put the option in the PHB. Conversely, animal people were a fringe interest, and had been for the vast majority of editions and settings-without the devs or players keen on them, there was really no reason to give them any special attention.

Couldn't tell you why they became a thing in Japanese fantasy, though. Shining Force and Breath of Fire had them, but I'm pretty sure it started before those two. Maybe something to do with the Wizardry series?

If you have one type of beastman, you should have others, otherwise it feels fairly magical realm AND furry.

Here's an idea for you: long ago, humanity pissed off the gods somehow, so the gods took away the humans superiority.

By causing every predator and dedicated omnivore to develop sentience and a demihuman form. But they sort of kept their own instincts and roles. Wolffolk are packhunters, Tigerfolk are solitary, Lionfolk form prides, Chimpfolk form troupes, etc.

The different beastfolk types cannot interbreed with other types or humans(no magical realm). Each has their own language, and most cannot speak human languages.

How do they interact with one another? That's more effort than I'm willing to do, so decide that for yourself if you want to use the idea.
