>Coffee girl keeps giving you dirty looks

Well why are you playing in a coffee shop? You seriously need to hide your power level.
>>
Maybe you should try not playing dnd
>>

She's just judging you for nothing playing a better system.
>>

You think she's a GURPS girl?
>>
>>48766073
Maybe it's because you're taking up a table or maybe more and only buying a few things for the few hours you're there
>>
>>48766073
I remain unfazed. And I won't tip her. Not a single cent.
>>
>>48766073
Why would she be giving me dirty looks? I showered.

Not even a slight grab of the fedora?
>>
>>48766073

I'm glad to see she's turned on by D&D

Though being so upfront in a public place is a little embarassing I get her number
>>
>>48766073
Probably because you're taking up her table space for hours on end without buying as many drinks as a few hours worth of customers would.
>>
>>48766190

I fuckin lost it

Well how legit pissed someone can be at that is based on how busy the place is.

In high school I played at McDonalds and the manager was super cool about it. He'd even give us free small sodas every session!

But, McDonalds doesn't have servers working partly for tips. If you're going to soak up table space don't do it at that sort of place.

>>48766207
Assuming this is in the U.S., a large portion of jobs as a server are only worth it for the tips and it's got to be at least a little frustrating knowing you'll have less opportunities to actually make money when you're doing your job.

But my argument stands. You can wriggle and squirm all you want, but the fact is that the negative consequences of being shunned for doing something unpopular usually outweigh the negligible benefits of enthusiastically sperging about it to strangers.

Assuming you're American, do average coffee shops really get that busy on a regular day?

In Australia I rarely if ever see a shop with every table taken even at 12-1 unless it's one of the really popular or trendy places.

The only way the server could get angry for that reason is if EVERY table was full and you were denying other possible patrons spots.

Just don't tip the bitch.
>>
>>48766829
Nah, the devil is in the detail. I do food service and bust my ass all day, only getting about 12 bucks on average in tips. It's better than some other places I've worked, where the average was more like 6. The latter was a tourist spot though, and a lot of those people don't really understand the concept of tipping.

>>48766207
There's also the noise to consider.

>>
>>48767232
Even with our most half-assed unprepared sacrifices to the archenemy, my group at least tries to subject the offering to drugs, blasphemy, and rap music beforehand.

Granted, some bitchy waitress isn't likely to get me that much XP anyway, even if she's kinda cute, so it's a wash. I can usually find a better mark hanging out near catholic schools. Sometimes I don't even need to cast a spell to get them in my van.
>>
>>48766084

They must be playing in South Korea and Japan, where gaming stores are few and living space is minimal. No dining room table D&D in East Asia.

I don't need to hide my /tg/ power level that much, I just treat it as a fun activity that I do with friends and community building, which it is. The minutia of characters and lore aren't needed for laymen any more than you'd talk about the lore behind Monopoly.

My /a/ stuff I keep on the downlow. It almost inevitably leads down the lewd path. I'm going to Comiket tomorrow. I have told noone.

It's because you don't understand that tipping doesn't exist in many countries of the world. It's North American/Some European Countries thing, pretty much. There's no tipping in Australia or China, frex.

Unfortunately, I have not played any Shadowrun vidja games, despite my fondness of the setting.

I was just using "Archenemy" in its use as one of many names or euphemisms for Satan. You know, like "The Adversary", "The Beast", "The Devil", "Lucifer", "Beelzebub", "The Prince of Darkness", and so on and so forth.

Yes, per shift. Some places around her, the boss takes the tips which, in some cases, the workers are too afraid to say shit even though it's illegal as fuck.

This is not about 'powerlevel', this is about societal expectation.

Ash Wednesday? Good Friday? Both of those days are supposed to be days of fasting. Don't know why so many Catholics would be out at restaurants? But also every Friday during Lent is a day you're supposed to abstain from meat that isn't fish.

OK, I know why many Catholics would be out at restaurants, too many of them don't care. Not sure why they would care about the abstaining if they don't care about the fasting.
>>

Never try to understand Catolicism or understand/trust people who are Catholic or claim to be Catholic. I told one job I needed Sundays and several bullshit holidays off because I was Catholic, then got tired of that (wanted to go out on Fridays and/or game) and told my next job's boss that I needed Saturdays off and when he finally asked about it I said my girlfriend takes me to synagogue. Neither of these things were true (my girlfriend at the time was black and I had even brought her to the restaurant when I was off shift)

I know a guy at work who is really into the Marvel movies and will talk about them a lot and when I ask about something he'll respond that he doesn't read the comics, but overall he's a pretty cool guy, doesn't get elitist about the movies, just enthusiastic.

There are two forces at work here.
>1. She sees young men enjoying themselves without her. This sparks her female instincts to interrupt and garner your attention. Believe me, women hate it when men are enjoying themselves without women. They become competitive with one another and generally want to fuck everything up.

>2. She sees nerds being nerds in public, which sparks her instinct to hate and criticize you. Women are well aware of social hierarchy, and have no problem putting labels on "losers" and "weirdos", especially if there are other women around to reinforce this.

So...with these two instincts at work, it is no wonder she is giving you all dirty looks. She is confused, and longs for an alpha male to come in to the place and get violent with you so that she will feel safe and appreciated again.

Hiding your powerlevel isn't about being ashamed, it's about being courteous and not a giant wierdo in public.

Wearing a sports jersey is fine, running around in full football pads and helmet really isn't. Same principle. No one cares if you're wearing talking about D&D in public, but actively playing it in a coffeeshop is just disrespectful and dickish to the employees. It's a place of business, not your fucking living room. The chairs and tables are for you to enjoy your drink and baked goods, not for a 5 hour jaunt through Forgotten Realms.
>>

They vary, same as any other group of people. I know a couple and they're perfectly fine to be around, they just have a tendency to think the latest "obscure" thing that's popular is the greatest, and that knowing about "obscure" stuff like that makes them whatever the term is for people super into [that thing].

I used to know another, though, who was kind of obnoxious. He was sort of a nerd hipster, where he claimed the mainstream anime/video games/etc weren't very good (not necessarily false, I'll give him that much) but he gave off the distinct impression he only did stuff so he could brag later about how he'd watched/read/played something someone else hadn't.

Thankfully he and I don't really associate with each other anymore.
>>
>>48775012
The stereotype, at least, is that they only care about stuff that other people supposedly haven't heard of, and that being familiar with this stuff makes them better (more well-read or whatever) than people who haven't. They also seem to extend this sense of superiority to people who actually enjoyed the stuff, because those people watched it or whatever for fun while the hipster watched it for the art or some shit.

tl;dr they want to feel intellectually superior

Where tipping exists outside of America it's not considered something you do automatically either. It's something extra you give for a job well done. If the service was mediocre or bad we don't tip, whereas in America people still tip but show that they aren't satisfied by putting it under a glass or some nonsense.
>>
>>48789815

Dude tipping here in the US is fucked.

It's pretty much part of the wage so if you don't tip you are saying that they deserve to have slave wages and that's fucking bullshit.

Never heard the one about there being signals about how satisfied you are based on where you place the tip.
>>
>>48789847
Most employers in the US are required to pay the difference if an employee doesn't manage to earn minimum wage through tips though.
>>
>>48789815
Europoor here, we have tradition of "round up to nearest ten, add another 10 if you liked the service". But my country doesn't do Euro yet (government too corrupt) and our coin exchanges to USD at aprox. 20:1.
Also it's partially about showing status that you can't be arsed with keeping the small change. Upper class sometimes even rounds to nearest 100 - can't be arsed with coins at all.

>If you don't make at least minimum wage in tips then your employer is supposed to pay you the difference.
Yes, but they don't do so automatically. They're paying the difference if the employee tells them to, which many don't because they don't realize that this is a thing. That, and sometimes shifts can be combined, so say that you work a four hour lunch shift, and later the same day a four hour evening shift; if you made enough in tips during the lunch hours to pay for eight hours minimum wage it doesn't matter if the evening is slow as hell and you earn nothing at all, your employer is not necessarily obligated to pay the difference for the evening shift.
>>
>>48799522
>Yes, but they don't do so automatically

They will, though. However, they'll usually pay you your wage, and then likely fire you, because if you can't even pull minimum wage after a full days work you're a REAL shit server. There's a very high turnover rate for servers, so you pretty much have to be at least decent to keep your job.
>>
>>48802238
>They will, though.
Yes, when asked.

>they'll usually pay you your wage, and then likely fire you
I'm not all too familiar with American labour laws, but that doesn't sound like it would be entirely legal. After all, a day can just be very slow in general. Maybe the kitchen is slacking off and guests that aren't dissatisfied with the server but with the food refuse to tip, etc.

Depends on the state (I think, again I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice). But an at-will state an employer can basically fire you for anything as long as it is not a protected class (sexuality, race, gender, nationality, etc.).
