So, in a few months I'll be starting a realistic medieval campaign (no magic, no superpowers, no monsters, definitely no ASOIAF) set in late XIII century not!England.
(Inb4 you can't do it, yes I can, my players are cool with it and I know their limits enough to make them enjoy the setting.)

I have pretty much everything figured out, except for the system.
I had in mind to pick an existing one and modding it until it's fairly reasonable, but it seems there's no realistic medieval game system out there.
What would you suggest? No GURPS plox.

Well, what kind of systems do you like? I would suggest that one system with realistic rules with easily moddable levels of details and tons of relevant material to your game, but you disqualified it for some reason, telling us why would make it easier to recommend a system you might like.

I have no problem with GURPS personally, but my players are pic related. Since we only meet a few hours a week, I can't entirely blame them, some just escaped from 3.pf and I want to share with them something that doesn't require months to grasp.

I don't think you're ever going to find something realistic that doesn't require reading, short of playing MP video games.

I really like Savage Worlds, to say one, but for some reason I can't come up with a way of adding a gritty medieval flavor to it. Plus, I have to GM and I have only played it once as a player, and I don't feel confident enough to start modding it.

Well I don't mind forcing them to read a little, but, again, I would like something rules-light enough not to make them eat a gun as soon as they roll their characters - especially regarding combat. I need it to be fast and lethal, enough to make them think tactically just a little.

I think some stripped down Warhamer fantasy roleplay might do the trick. But it was a long time since I touched that so I might be wrong.

Burning Wheel. Use only humans and drop the magic and faith systems and you should be good

Very easy to remove any of the magical stuff out of the game with very little impact.

Use GURPS, seriously. It's basically made for this.

And if you actually read the CRB you'll see that combat is not complicated in the slightest, it's actually a lot simpler than D&D.

Setting aside the dice used, it's quite similar to 40k RPG.

If you aren't using modern weapons then it's even simpler.

First to mind is Pendragon, the BRP knight simulator.

If it were me I'd build on Reign.

The Dark Eye might be worth a look. It's Fantasy, but very medieval themed. And it has tons of material, not sure how much is translated though.

The real question is what the game should be about. Intricacies of combat? Roles in society? Slowly going insane from peasantry? Nation building? Religious cold war? Name of the Rose?
