What does /tg/ think of characters that are just clones of another?

I always hated the idea of people playing anime characters and Drizzt clones but recently I saw the name Garruk Wildspeaker on /tg/. I found it odd because that's the name of a PC Barbarian/Ranger in my Campaign and after a google search I figured out he literally ripped off Garruk from MtG backstory and all.

The thing is he's roleplaying the character really well so now I'm not sure what my opinions are. What are yours?

In all seriousness, it's OK to theme a character after another, but don't be original character do not steal about it.

>My fighter is tormented by inner demons, wanting to be good but innately evil at heart.
Fine
>My fighter killed his wife, and his children now plot his demise
Fine
>He wears black armor that he almost never takes off, and a big scary cape
OK for campy games
>His armor is enchanted to keep him alive, as he was terribly burned fighting the man who trained him
Pushing it even for camp
>His name is Jarth Kader
Directly into the trash

This sounds like a good Spaceballs character

I never had any problem in characters "inspired" by already existing ones. Hell, in my group 90% of the PC are born upon the player finding an image or a concept they like and building on it. So I don't mind if a member of the party is a white haired monster hunter that use two swords.

The important things are:
First it must be coherent with the campaign. If we play a dark and gritty medieval fantasy Geralt is ok, Dante from devil may cry no.
And Second the details must be different. The character can have the same appearance and a similar background, and even a similar personality. But he can't be exactly the same.

I want to do a spaceballs character in a Star Wars Saga game a friend of mine is planning now.

Someone used a character as a base for their own, and then roleplayed it well? If you need someone to tell you how to feel about it you don't understand what actually fucking matters.

Does it work?

Guess his DM denied him access to the Jedi Academy Training Manual
>Page 32
>High Ground Defense [Lightsaber Form]
>You know how to take advantage of the terrain and gain a defensive advantage from it.
>Time: Swift Action
>Target: You

>BBEG swings his saber and misses, hits a grip just off camera
>BBEG loses next turn and just shuffles awkwardly and mumbling an apology

I don't see anything wrong with it, in and of itself. I've played several characters who started life as copycats of existing characters, but had developed into their very own distinct entities within a few sessions.

The issues arise when a player tries to stick to that existing character's personality profile to the letter regardless of what comes their way.
