Does anyone else that big guys are more important/better in league formats than in open match making?

In a league you can roster and cut a big guy depending on your opponent so it is more tv independent and it helps protect your squad from attrition to have one

IMO merc big guys shouldn't cost the extra 40k or what ever to hire for a match

I'm here at the inaugural game of the rookie league and the name of the game is "Gotta Go Fast". What was looking to be an exciting Game 1 turned into crushing rat infested win for the Skaven Team, who got not 1 but two blitzed off in the first half, and threw away a third potential goal as newcomer threepac delivered the ball to him on a silver platter(with cheese).
The second half devolved into a messy scrum which the reporter was too busy to actually watch. Rats win.

If you have both claw and mighty blow then you will be breaking armor on a 7+, on average breaking armor. Sure with piling on you can kill shit twice as fast, but if you have a full cpomb piece, especially a big guy who takes up so much tv they will get gang fouled.

And yeah, Pact doesn't have any real positionals so you need to skill marauders into them. Having a cpomb or 2 is alright as long as it's on a marauder.

What are the thought on the skaven thrower? Just take him because he is only 20K more than a lino and comes with surehands and just treat him like a lino unless your gutters die/you have to deal with surehands?

Alrighty, finished watched my first replay of many of an actual somewhat close match.

The game began with a rather onesided High Elf offensive. The Foot Blooters avoided the majority of the Amazon's blows. Managing to kill linewoman Nutty Nana right before scoring on their 5th turn.
The next drive looked promising for the rookie Amazons as Catcher Blaine was killed and saved by the apothocary. Then Bitchy the Thrower was give yet another serious concussion. Sadly though, the High Elven defense was too much and the Amazons would have to try and score again during the second half.
A sloppy start to the second half got Blitzer Donna surfed and the left the ball open to a blitz from technically still a high elf, Max. With the ball soon left undefended, Mad Chad makes a quick leap and runs away with the ball. In return, Star Play Bertha Bigfist gave Scatterfire Max a serious concussion and Line Miner had has ankle smashed when Sweet Sally turned sour with a foul.
After a turn of stalling the Foot Blooters score, but next drive Big Hands Betty pays Mad Chad back by stomping on his neck. In the final moments of the game, Catcher Blaine pays Donna back by badly hurting her and taking the ball. Without anymore time, the game ends 2-0 in favor of Foot Blooters. But looking at the state of the teams afterwords, I think we all know who the real winners are.

Pro elves have av7 linos and throwers, the difference between av7 and av8 is quite dramatic going from 41.67% to break armor to 27.78%. The high elf thrower is also better.

Dark Elves don't get any dedicated throwing or catching positionals, just a guy with Dump-Off. Furthermore, they have no ma8 positionals, and 2 of their positionals have av7.

These are their strenghts compared to pro and dark elves that you're ignoring, and obviously pro and dark elves have strenghts of their own just like they have their weaknesses like I just said.

Monkey Business Inc(CMonkey) v Papa Nurgle's Adoption Co(TactyHacky)


What do you get when you cross Monkeys with Nurgle's Chosen and play them on the hottest day of the year? A smell that will keep you vomiting all night long.

Cmonkey is back in the rookies this season, after a middling season last year thanks to some early loses, and he is first up against newcomer TactyHacky. The game starts on The monkey's drive and a hard, fast push down the sideline see a quick score with minimal losses for the MBI. It was at that moment the smell hit, and the heat stroke. When the teams return to the field they only numbered 5v7. What should have been an easy Nurgle drive turned sour quickly as the Beast knocked himself down attempting to hit a bonobo. Despite the monkey numbers dwindling to 2v7, Nurgle Warrior Jumbalgrin tripped over his own feet trying to score and lost the chance of a 1st half comeback.

Second half starts on Nurgle's drive with the numbers still in their favor 8v11. A perfect defense and failed pick up led to a Chimpan-Z-spread ball acquisition. On the recovery attempt Pestigor G. Diamonds decides that a light touch would be better than loosening the ball and C-Z-spread breaks out and runs it in. Tacty tries to get on the board with a grinding cage, but just barely manages to stop the ball when it is inevitably stolen and sent the wrong way down the field. Victorious sweaty Monkeys don't smell any better. MBI wins 2-0

I think you highlight a pretty valid dichotomy between these two coaches - sage tends to prefer active teams that execute very tactically precise plans.

The sorts of teams that Jimmy plays are more "spoiler" type teams that revolve more around locking down the opponent and ruthlessly taking advantage of good runs of dice. That requires an entirely different sort of foresight.

Blood Bowl's very, very dependent on the fickle d6 curve so at the end of the day margins will end up very very small.

One Night Rack - After taking a rookie Pro Elf team way farther than they should have gone in Season III, Coach Tooby has returned to the Veteran's League to bring his first team out of the graveyard (not the metaphorical kind) and has tossed off the kid gloves - no more poncy elven tricks here. That's right folks, the POUNDINATOR once more stalks the pitch, and here's hoping for a record-setting season for him!

Foot Blooters - The cutting of Diesel Wiesel at the end of Season III perhaps finally heralded a new era of uninjured positional play for the Foot Blooters, but these hopes have been seriously, seriously dashed by their performance against newcomer Lostworld Eschers in the first game of Season IV. The Blooters are once more going to have to fight tooth and nail against both their dangerous opponents and their even more dangerous Apothecary rehabilitation sessions if they want to avoid yet another demoralizing near-bottom finish.

Lostworld Eschers - Coach LogicsFate, rolling in the accolades from his tremendous Season III win has decided to break out booty of all kinds in celebration - Amazon booty! The girls have given a serious accounting of themselves in their first match, but the Blooters are easily one of the softest of the teams in the Veteran's League and walking home empty-handed does not bode well for the brutal underdog battles ahead.

Amorican Psycho - Do you have a need for speed? Amorican Psycho proudly held up the Skaven Banner in their debut season, and unlike the previous banner carrier for the Skaven faithful (Rolling the Rat Risks), managed to get through the season without completely self-destructing their Gutter Runner core. The team is still dangerously young for the shark-infested Veteran league though, and success this season will all depend on whether coach King_Ghidra can keep his young Gutterborn talent alive.

Bretonnian Werewolf in Tilea - Season III was a brutal one for Tilea - despite being the top (Were)dog with only token competition from fellow Necromantic team Vintage Vets, the team lost three of it's most promising stars and slid down to the lower brackets. Still, Werewolf Jean Baker and Wight John Burnside have proven a firm anchor for the new meat on the team and Tilea will need them badly to hold their own against the Veteran League stalwarts they dodged in Season III.

Dead Doornails - You know them, you love them, it's everyone's favourite Undead team! The amazingly dextrous Late Herr Hausen, the endearing fouling skelly Tiny Tibby, the brute force pair of Slotep and Khamun-whatever-his-name-was; the gang's all back together like one happy family, and with a new transfer from Kawaii Dwarfgakuen, the dwarven zombie Seifuku-sama! Unfortunately our interviewers were unable to ascertain Seifuku-sama's feelings on the trade, as the moans were mostly unintelligible, but we get the feeling he's plenty happy in his new role!

Emo Demolition Squad - For several seasons running the Knife-Ears have been the sole representatives of Malekith's kingdom in the Veteran's League, but EDS are one of the first Dark Elf graduates from the Rookie League to make the Veteran jump. They're considerably younger but already show stronger talent than the Knife-Ears did at an equivalent level, with a number of key players exhibiting unconventional skill developments. Definitely a dark horse to watch.

Frug's Jumpers - Frug's leave of absence has perhaps cooled heads (as well as official League investigations), but League fans with a long memory should not soon forget the controversy surrounding star Kroxigor Frug's far too convenient "Bone-heads" and strange winning payouts. On paper however the Jumpers look to have finally reached a very strong level, with no less than 5 Block Frogs and 3 Wrestle Frogs, with the team in remarkably good health. Their middling record also belies the fact that most of the Jumper losses have been dished out by the top Vet teams; with the tools to finally fight head-on the Jumpers may finally be able to turn around their record this season.

hither slither - As it was with the Chaos Dwarves last season and along with the Dark Elves this season, Lizardmen teams will no longer be in short supply this time around, with the wealthy and well-financed hither slither making the jump to the Vet League in time to compete alongside the Quickslithers, with a solidly developed Saurus core. No doubt we will see some divisison in Sotek's faithful this season as battle lines form over "Hithers" and "Slithers".

I dairy you to try - The "best" (and only) Chaos team in the /tg/ League is up to bring mayhem, havoc, and perhaps feed wins in the Veteran League. The team is still a long way away from having the trademark killers of veteran Chaos teams, but a few well placed MVPs this season could see this team suddenly take off. And if the favour of the Chaos gods keeps this rookie team from fumbling the ball or failing blocks, coach ramciamciam could definitely pull off some unexpected underdog wins.

Naggarond Knife-Ears - The Knife-Ears had their best regular season to date in Season III, but in the recurrent "curse of the League Leader trophy" was eliminated in round 1 by a spectacular mispass of the ball into the sidelines, giving Just Elf My Shit Up the lead. Repeating the same stellar performance this season might be difficult - while the competition is Dwarf-free, Season IV marks the return of the Knife-Ear's worst nemesis, the Lizardmen Quickslithers, who the Dark Elves have failed to beat in all 3 of their matches.

Quickslithers - After a season in hibernation the Quickslithers have awoken to once more claim incredibly bullshit Saurus ball-handling TDs in the name of Sotek. The team proved in season II however that they're not solely a one-trick reptile, the Quickslithers also feature a cunning and aggressive Skink game. The return of this traditional League heavyweight will likely mean a fiercely contested season for sure.

Red Fang Rockets - After a few middling seasons the Rockets nearly got their green-skinned hands on the Season III Championship, but were denied in the last few turns by the Chaos Dwarf Doomstar Requiem. The team has tasted victory now though, and their players are definitely hungry for more. The Rockets make up the fifth longtime heavyweight this season alongside the Knife-Ears, Doornails, Slithers, and the Rack. And with only 6 playoff berths up for grabs and many more up and coming teams this season the Rockets might need to take a page out of Mork's playbook and add some "brutally kunnin'" tricks to go with their methodical "kunnin' brutality" style.

Snorkland Soulless - The Soulless will be one of the wild cards this season. Nurgle teams, while not necessarily great at ball handling themselves, make ball-handling very difficult for the opposition. And with Nurgle teams virtually unknown in the /tg/ league until Season III, it's likely that many coaches have yet to incorporate any specific anti-Nurgle plays into their books. Even if the Soulless don't win any games this season, a tie or two could throw the tight packed standings this season into tremendous disarray.

South City Scum - The vast majority of human teams throw in the towel after a season convinces them that the hard knocks just aren't worth it, but the Scum are back to give out a licking in equal measure. While a very young team the Scum have shown they aren't afraid to beat on foes twice their size and managed some very improbable wins in the first season. Coach ph0enyx13 is going to need a lot more than just luck if he wants to make top 6 this season, but the Scum definitely have moxie.

Storybook Memes and Gorumand's Delicatessen - With the Candy Rappers nigh dismantled in Season III and the Arsenal in retirement, the only Stunty farm teams, er, I mean, "representatives" remaining are a pair of Goblin graduates from last season's Rookie teams. Goblins are a far meaner bunch, and much like the Snorkland Soulless their impact this season might be greater measured in terms of their metagame impact on the standings, and more importantly, the star players whose blood they water the pitch with!

ZaUnderWarudo - ZaUnderwarudo holds the lone Underworld torch with the passing of the Candy Rappers. Their list of past players reads like a butcher's bill, but a toll like that is to be expected given their previous season's back-to-back matchups against Chaos Dwarves and then Orcs! With a season of hell behind them, however, ZaUnderwarudo can look forward to a blessedly Dwarf-free season that might give them the space to rebuild.

Major thoughts from the Commentary Desk for this season, in quick bullet points:

-No Dwarves! While many teams are developed enough to have a dedicated Tackler or two, Tackle will be precious and in short supply, and having a Tackler fouled out early could be a game decider.

-Returning Heavyweights - Season IV marks the return of many heavyweights which took a season off, which results in 4 teams at or above the 1600TV cutoff (which is usually considered the end of the "mid-level" team): One Night Rack, Quickslithers, Naggarond Knife-Ears, and the Red Fang Rockets, with the Dead Doornails not far off at 1510k.

-History Repeats - some teams just seem cursed to share the same fate season after season. Watch for a Foot Blooter season dogged by injuries, Knife-Ears unable to beat Lizardmen, Frug throwing a game to a bonehead, and the League Leader that is different from the Championship winner.

-Highly Distributed - there's a far more even distribution of teams this season, which means many rosters have two choices with more than a few "rough equivalency" rosters. Dark Elves, Lizardmen, Necromantic, and Goblin all have paired teams, while you also have many close analogues - a Human/Slann/Amazon trio and a Chaos/Nurgle/Orc trio.
