Depends on the system.

Worrying about XP as a reward is meaningless because the GM can make challenges as unfair as he deems appropriate for the story, and it's possible to run a great game without character advancement at all.
There should never be grinding in a tabletop RPG. The necessary number of enemies fought and quests fulfilled per level up is only a suggestion. If you seriously anticipate the amount of XP a given course of action will net you, and that affects your character's choices, you deserve nothing.
