Sup /tg/, I'm currently DMing a game of pathfinder that is mostly based around monsterslaying. All encounters are sort of boss fights with very hard monsters for the party to face the rest of their time is spent exploring intricacies of the world and roleplaying. Pathfinder has worked alright and it's easy to drum up players for but it's not perfect.

I want to try and transition to a better system later on in the campaign or maybe for a new similar campaign. What system would you guys recommend for really punishing combat with sort of low fantasy characters going against like horrifying mythical beasts?

So how do you do your boss fights then? Run right outa the beastiary or do phases/progressive beatdowns to avoid hp slugfest feel?

I typically do fights as a single encounter although I'm thinking about trying something different so far the bosses are either damage sponges or nigh impossible to hit and both have frustrated players for different reasons.

I've done 3 so far, the first one was kind of a push over since a lot of the players are new I think, the first boss was a minotaur with the scalding template but the party played really smart and were able to whittle it down and stun/confuse it before it could do anything, it was a damage sponge. The second legit fight went a lot better from my side, I made two fourth level antipaladins and slapped a monster template on them, it didn't turn into a minion battle and there wasn't just a single enemy to dog pile.

Been having those same issues in my PF game. I've been working on how to best do a phase thing based on hp remaining. Especially for large monsters i want to allow players to cripple limbs and shit so they can see their impact on the monster. Conversely i also want each phase to kick off a little power up that they can take away if their clever, like breaking the glowing cristal or drenching the iron golems firey core. I want to break up the high ac whiff fest and damage sponge crap associated with most bosses.
