i am thinking about getting into dungeons and dragons how should i start?

I recommend looking into the most popular kinds of Dungeons and Dragons around right now. They are:

>Pathfinder: For people who like mechanics-heavy games.
>D&D 5E: For those seeking a good, versatile system.
>Dungeon World: For those focusing on narrative and story.
>>
1. Get some friends.
2. Buy the 5e Starter set. It has everything you need to start, but you might also want to buy some extra dice.
3. Play it.
4. If you like it, buy/download the 3 core books, and continue on from there.

This is also useful for new players.

this, basically. If you're the person who's most excited about getting a group together, you'll probably end up DM'ing. If so, google "tips for running lost mines of phandelver," and you'll find lots of helpful message boards and such

Are you thinking about getting into Dungeons and Dragons or are you thinking about getting into RPGs?
Because Dungeons and Dragons is a pretty bad start into the hobby.

Download Advanced Dungeons and Dragons PHB 1st Edition from Google.

Will you be the one running the game? If not, than 5e is handily the one being played the most at the moment.

If you are, do you think the people you'll be playing with want a looser, character-based game, or a tight combat- and challenge-based game. If the former, 5th Edition is still your huckleberry. Your biggest hurdle will be the encounter-building system, which is...eh...out of of the box, and you'll want to refine it as you play. If it's the latter, then 4th Edition, with the Monster Vault is airtight.

Both have starter sets and solid adventures for them. Pick your poison.

3.PF is an awful start, but 5e is an okay start. The only bad thing about starting 5e is it carries the same "I can use D&D for anything!" idea we've been fighting since the 70s.

So, speaking as a GURPSfag...

Grab 5e, but also grab something else.

D&D is fine...but it's really easy to turn into a gronard tard with it and get stuck in a rut.

So, 5e, and then something else, simple one book shit to run easy peasy between campaigns. Maybe FATE, maybe Mouseguard. Keep your playing, and player pallet, flexable.

4e is DM's dream edition

5e is DM's nightmare: all the worst of CR and XP budgets, with none of the actual encounter balancing.

However, for new PLAYERS 5e is very strong at introducing people to the basic ideas without being too cumbersome, just don't let 5e be a gateway d20OGL into 3.PF and [insert genre]d20.

If you're looking to join a group of people who already know what they're doing, then the current, 5th edition, is what you want. It's gonna have a larger following than anything with the possible exception of 3.5e / Pathfinder and is a good deal simpler (and less clusterfucky) than those. If you want to start up a game with your friends, I'd suggest looking into Barbarians of Lemuria (see pic), a good, rules-light, swords & sorcery game with a kind of lame name. While 5e D&D may be significantly simpler than 3.5e / Pathfinder, it's still rules-medium and a great deal more involved than Barbarians of Lemuria.

>Barbarians of Lemuria, Legendary Edition (earlier edition, fewer details & more minimalist presentation makes it even easier to learn, but the rules aren't as refined) -- http://www.mediafire.com/download/p5w885sa9a869ma/Barbarians+Of+Lemuria+-+Legendary+Edition.pdf

>Barbarians of Lemuria, House Rules / Patches for Legendary Edition (if you want the bare bones minimalism of Legendary, but with the rules tightened up a bit) -- https://mega.co.nz/#F!CtQR2bST!y_awB-GHCiL3CdK4iLCV7A

Pathfinder is for austists who want to build overpowered bullshit without letting the narrative get in the way of their number crunching.

Dungeon World is only good for special snowflakes who want to pretty much do anything they want without any risk of failure getting in the way of how awesome their characters are.

5e is meh but it's the best of both worlds and it doesn't require months of studying cover to cover to get a decently built character off the ground.

1. Watch the PAX acquisitions incorporated videos to familiarize yourself with the flow of the game

2. Do you have friends to play with IRL?
>Yes
Get the starter set, set it up, and run them through it with pencil and paper
>No
Find an adventures' league at a game shop willing to take on a newbie (they should, that's the whole point)

3. Start shitposting on /tg/
>>
>>46825721
Try Dungeons: The Dragoning 40,000 (7th edition) instead. It half the mess, double the fun.

Or, try go in via F.A.T.A.L. if you're still more interested in more "classic" D&D

what do you think is best for starters other than 5e?

Turn 360 degrees, moonwalk into a location with a GURPS book.

5e is alright at best. DnD is a shit system defended exclusively by people who have never played anything else.

get the 5e starter set

its like $12 on amazon
>>
>>46841513
other than 5e: 4e (ignore the memes), basic rules cyclopedia, 2e, any one of ten million retroclones that are the exact old school D&D ruleset but in an actually readable format. 3.PF is the only bad D&D game.
>>
>>46841987
oh and having said that, 5e is still probably your best bet.
