to the anon who painted this saucy bastard. How did you get such a nice matte black?
>>
>>46824399
It actually took me a few different methods and attempts. Black is a nightmare, and I'm not looking forward to my chaplain and deathwatch set.

That was done over a black basecoat with a mix of white and black (maybe 25/75) to make a dark grey. Did a normal layer, leaving some areas (recesses) flat black.

Once that dried I did a glaze of black overtop. Just with watered down black paint. Sometimes two if I thought I messed up and watered it down too much.

Finally an edge highlight with the same dark grey at the end. The knee/elbow pads got a few more highlights and glazes with mixed degrees of success.

I can try to do an image tutorial when I get around to doing my chaplain, if you'd like. It's a hard to explain process because I cooked it up at 5AM when frustrated out of my mind with the more traditional edge highlighting I tried first.
>>
>>46824399
I would Love for a small image tutorial if you have the time. I Love the looks of that black and want to emulate it for my RG.

I like you, anon.
>>
>>46827766

Rest of the mini needed just a little filing to get it into shape, so it's janky because of that. Going to smooth over it later.

Tits were done in one, though might need some work later. It's also how you sculpt, sculpt the figure as naked as necessary then apply clothing, details, and stuff afterward.

But I'd be lying if I say the intended end result isn't cheesecakey as fuck.
>>
>>46823884
What do you guys use for stripping plastic minis? I copped a shitload of tau off ebay for a sweet deal but some of the minis have some godawful scheme that is going to make my painting life very difficult if I can't get rid of it. The previous owner didn't really seem to be a fan of multiple coats so it shouldn't be too difficult to remove. I've heard methylated spirits/dettol will work well. Will either of these damage the plastic underneath?

>>
>>46829065
Pretty damn fine.

>>
>>46829065
Lovely for your first time. My criticism would be to work on the consistency of your blue. Put down multiple thin layers ( waiting for the previous layer to dry) before hitting it with a shade and highlights.
>>
>>46828944

If my own face-sculpting attempts fail horribly, I might just give up and get a few heads for the collection and future projects. But I want to try sculpting my own because if I ever start selling any of my sculpts I don't want any legal issues selling someone else's sculpt.

Also, nice Necrosphinx. Texture might be a bit much, though I'll suspend judgment until it's painted.

jup looks quite good. I highly recommend you try and paint the eyes red using the eye glare guide thing and clean up some of the highlight lines by painting the darker blue over the highlights. Will make it look much much cleaner.

>>
Any other Brits here?

Seems like we have only half the tools that Americans can get easily. Simple Green, various primers without paying £10 postage in case it explodes, a lot of the varnishes etc.

I'm painting some Reaper Bones at the moment, and it's just a pain in the ass. I've washed them and prepared them, cut off the integral bases and put them on regular ones. Since they apparently don't need primer, I put on a base layer of Abaddon Black, and I don't know if it's just me or I've lost a lot of detail. I don't think the Vallejo metallics on top help either.
>>
>>46831740

I should add, I've never actually varnished a model after painting it. I think I was always worried that all my hard work would end up frosted over or something.

Where do I start?

Spray primer?

Rough spray enamel usually means you're holding the can too far from the model. The paint droplets will partially dry before hitting the model unless you get in close and move swiftly. Try to maintain a 5-6in range.
>>
>>46824909
+1 for the guide, it can be shared and non-black black are dope.

Plastikote/valspar is what you want for primer.

The Minotaur is from Malestrom Games old BaneBeasts line. Looking for this picture I found out a company picked up the rights called; Mierce Miniatures. Good to know, cause they have some fun fantasy stuff.

The resin on this particular model is so fragile, even with the thickness of it (I assume it's solid from the weight). It tipped over and there's a hardly visible crack on it's chest now. Scar tissue cover up and ancient model make it less of an issue.

>>
>>46834536
My dream is them taking the old models and making them plastic, but I don't see that happening, as they would need to "scan" the models and turn them onto CAD plans to be able to make them plastic I believe.

Marines with mismatched armor are all over the place. Can't always be issued a full suit, so they'll just put together a suit of whatever is available. Forgeworld literally sells models designed this way.

Git gud.

This could involve some kind of splint, a suitably uneven surface to rest things on, pinning, a different type of glue, plain old patience, or whatever.

As it is, you've fucked up. And we're not going to ignore that just because you can't be arsed to not fuck up.

I actually airbrush myself and it's so piss easy and fast it IS almost like "cheating". Unless you're free-handing fucking murals on Harley motorcycles with your airbrush, don't try to pretend your airbrushed models prove you're a skilled painter.

>>
>>46844929

Maybe if you only care about the end result, but if that were the case might as well buy world class commissioned armies.

Painting should be about the journey. There's nothing wrong with airbrushing, but bad airbrushers and self-righteous, hypocritical, and arrogant airbrushers (sort of like you) are the problem.
>>
>>46844967

If you're just base coating a cheap single action or $20 nameless Chinese dual action is good enough, but a decent dual action from a reputable brand is so much more pleasurable to use.

The most recommended are a $100-150 Iwata or Badger.

The compressor needs to be quiet enough and powerful enough, and you definitely want a tank. You can get a silent tank compressor but the silent part makes the money skyrocket. Expect to spend $100 minimum on a decent compressor. You also need moisture traps and hoses which aren't always included.

Do these marines match in size with the newer ones? I've got a box of space marines on it's way to me and I kept 5 sprues (10 marines) for size testing and see if I can do anything to transform these guys into "sort of" space wolves or if I'll go with the lamenters chapter paint.

I thought the same to be honest but I had like 15 sprues, I kept 5 sprues (4 sprues with bolters and 1 sprue with the sergeant and a powerfist) like the one little box they used to sell with 10 marines only but I don't have the box, I almost want to print that box on cardboard and make my own box, set these in, print the little instruction page and set it for collection. Still thinking about it tho.

Also, all of these marines are kind of squatting too so that might be the cause of their lower height.

>>
>>46849893

It was just some random sarcasm. The entire Vallejo case probably costs less than what GW would cost to paint 5 different armies

People who complain about paint prices are stupid though, even though GW paint price has gotten very high after the two recent price hikes. People used to whine about GW paint costing $3.25 and Vallejo paint costing $3.
>>
>>46849504
Been in the hobby for 4 years but this is the first land raiders I've ever had and the first FW resin. Only resin I'm used to is Victoria Lamb, max mini, and mad robot, all of which actually fit.

Plus the plastic on this damn land raider is warped a bit of something. The top of the hull took forever to get to stick even with plastic glue.

Also holy fucking shit, this land raider weighs a ton with all these metal bits. Only model I have that is heavier is my five 100% metal dreads.
>>
>>46849986

The old FW vehicles kits (and FW vehicles in general) are HORRIBLE for fitment.

The problem is their workers pull them out of the mold hot and put them on a table with the huge gates attached, causing sags and bends, and the rapid cooling shrinks the doors and holes.
>>

Well, people tend to get all defensive if you bring up stuff that FW doesn't do well, so all the bad things usually get blamed on recasts. You could observe that in this thread.

>>46850259
Their full resin vehicle casts are great, same goes for their infantry kits. It's just older resin-on-plastic vehicle kits that don't do so well.

On a side note, i've finished rebasing my rubics. Yay.
>>
>>46850252

It's probably cheaper to do it that way. Customers either fix it themselves or call for a replacement which is cheaper than having a worker stand around waiting for it to properly cool down and carefully extract it (while on UK wages).

Faster and cheaper to just pump that shit out and let the customers handle it or constantly give them replacements since you're pumping out so many.

This is why chinese recast vehicles are magically not as shitty as FW ones despite the fact that chinese recasts are often inferior to FW ones for infantry (despite what the recastfags will try to tell you), because Chinese labor is cheap and they actually remove the pieces properly from the mold for their customers.

I have but two questions for you /WIP/

Are synthetic brushes an obstacle to good painting

and

Is there a better chaser to vodka than greasy+salty solid food?

Currently munching a $1.00 Chicken Junior from BK between taking swigs of the cheapest 1.75 Liter bottle of vodka money can buy.

Never have I felt more confidence and enthusiasm in finally picking up a brush

Seriously I think this Junior Chicken from BK is the perfect chaser what the fuck is wrong with me

No really though I'm torn between buying brushes from miniature paints companies at a markup, buying high quality synthetic and calling anyone else a richfag, or buying some good entry level "real" quality natural hair brushes like Rosemary & Co
>>
>>46850436
>Are synthetic brushes an obstacle to good painting

Not if they form a sharp point and have a wide reservoir (they are very thick at the base, instead of being just a few strands).

Don't eat while you paint and don't paint while drunk. The fact that you think drunken painting and poor brush choices will lead to anywhere good the next morning says a lot about your current habits, so I would advise against it.

Rosemary & Co aren't that much cheaper than Raphael 8404 so if you're going to buy synthetic then just go for a better company if you can find one for close to the same price. Otherwise just stay with a sharp synthetic.

>>
>>46850556

The poor brush choices was mostly you trying to compensate with actual good sable/kolinsky/synthetic brushes with what I"m assuming is a random shitty dollar store synthetic.

I mean, if you're asking "do good brushes really matter?" because you don't want to "waste money" on actual good brushes, I can't just assume you know what you're doing. Most reasonable people would assume the exact opposite.

This is called "umami". Japanese scientists describe it as a completely new flavor alongside sweet, salty, sour, bitter, etc. It's the flavor you get from meat, delicious broth, etc. It's the "savory" flavor.

I don't doubt they're not a waste of money in terms of longevity (though I hear synthetic s aren't hard to revive) but I queston NEEDING natural brushes

Sables are popular because they retain water well for thinned paints (better than synthetic), and they have sharp, fine points (more easily done than synthetics).

They're also softer and have less snap and stiffness than synthetics, but this isn't exactly a pro and can be a con. Depends on your own preferences.

You'd probably see some improvement using a a better synthetic from a good brand. You can't just claim they won't help if you've never even used one. You don't even need to try new techniques. My layering and precision improved drastically simply because I didn't have to struggle with threadbare non-kolinsky sable brushes and just used a sharp kolinsky brush.
>>
>>46850811

>>46850884

AP brushes are cheap for a reason. You're wasting your time. For all this deliberating and trying to buy a bunch of $5 AP brushes you could buy a single $10-13 Raphael 8404 and be set for life, if not several years, and with better quality.

If you prefer synthetic I guess W&N would be the brand but honestly I don't know. I've got some W&N synthetics and they are extremely stiff, which I don't like.

I swear by my WN Series 7, size 2 (note: NOT miniature Series 7, those are not what you want despite the name). It has definitely got a different "feel" from a synthetic, and it comes to a sharper point than much smaller synthetics. My results might not be a ton better, but it really is a joy to paint with. You can get one for $20-$25 - yes, that's a lot for a brush, but how many figures is that really? It's the second best investment I've ever made in painting pleasure, after my ghetto tupperware-and-paper-towel wet palette. A fine Kolinsky brush is really worth trying out. Worst case scenario, you've wasted the price of a half dozen figs.

Try a Goodwill outlet, not the retail store, but where they take all the nasty and soiled shit. Might find what you need there on the cheap. That or a flea market or something along those lines, places you can purchase used stuff. Anything new always comes at a premium.
>>
>>46852326
I live in Australia, but I gather Goodwill is some sort of op shop. I don't even think they'll have what I need desu. I'd be happy to buy second hand or even of slightly dubious quality, but I don't think there's as many options where I live.

Yah, it's a corporation we have here in the states that people donate used stuff to that they then resell. Can find a lot of materials cheap there, especially at the outlets. As far as stuff like that in Australia I really have no clue. I'm trying to think of stuff that might use thin sheets of particle board that you could buy used on the cheap but I'm drawing a blank.
