Rule 63 edition

Discuss the viability of the Warcraft universe as a tabletop RPG setting, laugh at the finer points of lore and discuss why genderbent illidan and Arthas were totally tsundere for eachother. Have fun, don't go full autist, and keep your cool. This is not /v/

they should specify that the forsaken were the ones who died of the plague and whose brains did not rot away excessively during their unlife as zombies. the average zombie would still be feral even if it somehow got away from the lich king. Except it's not a physiological thing, but a will power thing.

Forsaken are strong enough to resist the call of the Lich King even when he returned to power, it's not just some fluke.

The same reason why the ebon blade should not be the one to challenge them, you can't bind them to your will when you raise them (at least the older forsaken).

I like to think that a Forsaken's body is just a vessel for their souls, so it doesn't matter what condition it's in. I mean, if you reach that level of external decomposition your brain is likely just as bad off. Feral zombies are just husks.

What I'd like to know is why playable undead and zombies are two distinctly different creatures. They're both undead humans that haven't made the full transformation into ghouls, after all.
>>
>>46591375
>The Wc3 forsaken were a tiny ass coven of banshees who got by when they possessed people to be their meatshields.

This, just a few banshees(WHO BTW ARE FEMALE ELF GOSTHS THAT GOT RECRUITED FUCK THE RETCON OR WHATEVER), some of them possed archer becoming dark rangers, that control ogre and bandit leaders, even theyr ghouls and shit are all controled by silvanus, they got no free will.

If you guys were paying attention in Cataclysm it's implied that post-WotLK all newly raised Forsaken are brainwashed, which causes many of the original Forsaken to defect from Undercity or join Neutral factions. Sylvanas also decides to capture and torture an Ebon Knight just because she can. Sylvanas is just a cunt who is going to WoW's hell when she finally dies permanently (Given she's been "there" already after committing suicide once)

Luckily Legion will finally answer what happened to Koltira and probably lead into a third New Horde civil war (The first two being the Battle for Undercity and Siege of Orgrimmar) since Faol and Calia have returned

Is the important point here.
In Vanilla, the Forsaken were free, a newly created just broke free from the Lich King's control.

Nobody is disputing that Sylvannas is a toxic megacunt nowadays.

>Luckily Legion will finally answer what happened to Koltira and probably lead into a third New Horde civil war

Right, because Alliance is a bigger threat than scourge, demons or Deathwing.
And torturing and brainwashing a hero of northrend campaign is always a good idea.

Incidentally it's kinda awkward how they made low level quests fit into post-WotLK period historically, considering how players then work through content of two expansions that take place chronologically in the past.

>>
>>46592574
>Sylvanas also decides to capture and torture an Ebon Knight just because she can.
He was associating with his Alliance couterpart in the Ebon Blade, striking something of a draw in the Plaguelands. Sylvanas decided that was worthy of sending Koltira to the gulag.
>>
>>46592214
This was one of my main problems with the god awful WotLK ending. The idea that non-Lich King controlled scourge will instantly go on a killing rampage was nonesense. I met plenty of scourge and they were some of the nicest, friendlist npc's in the game.

>>
>>46593082
>He was shown to be a hardliner who was somewhat prejudiced towards the elves.
That's very kind description of his character, but it's not accurate.

1. When he knew of two forces advancing on his position, he focused entirely on one and sent only token force at the other. Whether or not he was prepared for this force to be overrun and merely used it in hope of distracting the other one, or whether he left his flank genuinely unguarded is not known, but let's give him benefit of doubt and assume the former.
2. When the token force against all odds succeeded, instead of commending it for use of unorthodox tactics he condemned its commander AND all his subordinates to execution.
3. He allowed himself to be controlled by a literal demon.
4. After getting freed from demon's grasp, he did not hesitate for one moment to switch his allegiance. Admittedly in his position he couldn't do anything else, but he failed to pass muster he set for his subordinates.

Only delusional people here are people who think Garithos was good.
>>

>>

Because mines alone will do nothing to Archimonde.
All the rush Archimonde fights use it to clear the undead base, not kill Archimonde.

The fight is only winnable with mass ancients (not treants, Ancients) and Lorewise there's not that many Ancients standing to throw at Archimonde.

How predictable coming from the side that never gives anything.

And I am shitposting instead of you? really?

Well you clearly have a thing for prissy thugs. Sylvanass should be just in your type.
>>
>>46592574
>it's implied that post-WotLK all newly raised Forsaken are brainwashed
No it isn't. Just look at the fucking starting zone. Of the Undead that are raised, there are three possible options. Either they're mindless, decide to return to death, or they stick around.

Of that last bunch who stuck around, they are split into another three groups. Those who just run off, those who become hostile to the Forsaken, and those who sign up out of convenience.

This final bunch undergoes further selection when the game goes a bit more indepth, such as when there are actual characters involved with some form of story. Some are naive or plain stupid, others apathetic, while the final bunch shoots Sylvanas in the back of the head.

None of this suggests any sort of brainwashing is going on. Sylvanas literally loses most of the newly raised Undead whenever it's shown in any detail.
>>
>>46594698
its always sad watching people like you resort into petty insults when you can't make any counter points.

Literal cancers.
>>
>>46594687

I think the point he was making is this. Saying Kael didn't need to work with the naga becuase the level can be beaten without them is as silly as saying Malfurian didn't need to wisprush Archimonde becuase the level can be beaten other ways.
>>
>>46594842
She actively asks the PC to kill the other undead who were banding together on the excuse that they were going to attack undercity.
Then there is the matter of raising all the people from hillsbrad or tirisfal or the westfall militia
>>
>>46594859
It can be beaten in another way that the lore says is impossible to accomplish
(not that many ancients to throw at Archimonde)
While nothing was ever addressed about Kael's fight.

Blame it on Blizzard's unwillingness to address the legitmancy of every fight in WC3.

>>
>>46594942

they can both be beaten in an alternate way, therefore asserting that Kael'thas didn't need to team up with the naga is silly
>>
>>46594811
It's called cognitive dissonance m8.

You'd be capable of dealing with it better if you opened yourself up to possibility that you could be wrong.

Think for a moment, you never even addressed the fact that even innocent workers were to be put to the sword, you grasp at straws to justify passing the sentence in first place and you never even acknowledged the hypocrisy of failing to live to one's own standard.

But anyway, this is like talking to a wall. Go ahead and spout more memes and insults like you started to in >>46593854 and then proceed to call me cancer. At least it will help you relieve the frustration, hopefully.
>>
>>46594874
The Rotbrains? No one claims they're mindless, and I'm pretty sure they really were meant to be hostile in the lore. Also, Sylvanas isn't the one who asks you to kill them.

I don't care about arguing lazy quest or game design. I'm talking about when things are actually shown in detail and not brushed over.
>>
>>46594859
Of course. The point stands that he could have plausibly held the line without the naga and waited for Gari to come back. He would be berated for not being able to wipe the undead out like he was ordered, but not locked up for treason and mutiny.
>>
>>46595012
in an alternative way which BZ ate the book later and made it impossible.
So it became impossible in lore.

Yes garithos was a tard for executing them, he should rather have demoted kael or broken the blood elf forces up. But they were not innocent.

Becoming Undead typically warps the personality and I don't recall many notable characters that did as you claimed, unless it was something that was brushed over. Even Lilian Voss, who didn't join the Forsaken, decided to kill her family and everyone she knew. She also acts like some edgy crazed psychopath when you talk to her.

I'm not trying to defend Sylvanas here, but she has too high of a failure rate to be brainwashing most of her Forsaken.

I read a German fanfiction back in I believe the BC days with exactly this theme.

It was... Odd. You could tell that the Author really hated Jaina back then and tried to make her as unlikeable as possible, a feat which is now accredited to Kossak.
>>
>>46595734
Yes, and that quest also has a ton of Val'kyr she pulled out of her ass and no real named characters. Nothing is shown in detail, and if she could raise the dead without producing a bunch of extra mindless zombies than she'd have done it in the starting zone. Game mechanics aren't necessarily lore.

In short, I don't give a shit about any example unless it actually gives us a good look at the subject matter.

Nonsense. I just prefer examples that show more detail to ones that are simplified.

I'm not doubting Sylvanas and her Val'kyr raised people there and led them to attack their former allies, but it wouldn't have been as simple as shown ingame.
>>46596082
Only the freshly raised dead are relevant to the discussion. Their commanders are not.
>>
>>46592227
I always thought that that was just an abstract ingame representation to help players understand their objectives.

But I also understand that some lore is inevitably tied to what happens in the game, because otherwise it would be completely stupid to even try and tell a story in a game, so I understand that I could be wrong.

yes, the freshly raised farmer militia start attacking the alliance forces. It is that simple. It is what happened.

And this can be argued as just game mechanics, or we may as well claim the world is the same size as it is ingame. I'm just saying the finer details are probably lost.

The basic premise of the quest is likely true. Recently raised individuals turned on the Alliance forces. Blizzard's statement on the matter is that the recently raised are pretty confused, especially if they died violently, so it's easy to direct them to just go kill some guys.
>>
>>46596786 my autismcraft is another thing(also better) we gonna do.

>>46596497
And once he and his "army" is dead, the Undead can attack the city.
There is no gold mine on the island and you start of with 300 gold, two dragonhawk riders, an archer and a priest in the island.
If you mine efficiently until the bases are destroyed you get about 2400 to 2500 gold and that's fucking it. If you just stick around on the island and never get off there, you'll die eventually.
From the way it's presented it's pretty clear that his position is fucked up. Now keep in mind that he also has most of the remnants of his race with him, so even IF he could actually hold out by throwing the last survivers of his race under the bus, can you fault him for taking another way?
>>
>>46597047
the actual correct way to play thisis retreat your entire force. then you can hold off indefinately by pre-strike the skybarges before they land on the island.

You can win the map without losing a single unit.

> However, some undead, especially those who die in combat or under extreme stress and are raised soon after, enter into a violent, frenzied state.

No, its because blizzard railroaded the story there. A better campaign would be having some bullshit mumbo jumbo magic artefact in the island that can blow up the undead attacking the city, but they can't reach it.
Que the naga entering and giving it to kael who uses it to destroy the undead. Right around this time garithos returns and sees kael do dark magic with the naga and has them executed.
Neither character is retarded in that way.

> they are manipulated in to attacking their allies, therefore mind control
Ah, but technically it's not and that technicality is good enough for a large portion of the Forsaken.

As a whole, their society is blatantly and indefensibly evil. That's not to say there aren't a large amount of decent, or at least innocent, Forsaken. Just that their leadership is obviously evil, as well as their actions as a nation.

Because you don't want to admit forsaken is spiting on the point of their own existence for power, which is precisely what they have being doing.
>>
>>46598372
>What do you think "manipulate newly raised" involves?
Taking advantage of their easily manipulated and confused state, and pointing them in the right direction before they come to their senses and realize what's going on.
>>
>>46598372
Or at least the Val'kyr are.

They could give Sylvanus the Crown of Will that Mug'Thol found in Alterac and basically free her and chain reaction free the rest if they wanted.

The Tauren are, as they have always been, the one good Horde race.

Barring the Grimtotem, who have been exiled and executed for being assholes.
>>
>>46598525
That's the thing. Plenty of the Forsaken are alright, though they have a disproportionate number of assholes. However, the current regime is unmistakably evil.

Darnell doesn't seem too bad and neither does the guy selling stagwiches. The Forsaken are clearly not universally despicable, even post-cata. However, Sylvanas very much is.

It would have been way cooler if the Revantusk were the playable horde race on the EK and the forsaken be a neutral faction opposed to the scarlet crusade which was also more neutral.

Have harpies always been cunts?

Apparently they used to be chill when Aviana was around before the War of the Ancients, but after she left they got progressively more evil.

Could we make non-hostile harpies as a result of nurture vs. nature?

Even if they are "just" manipulating people, they still have biological (well, so long as the Plague of Undeath or the Blight can be called BIOLOGICAL) warfare on their hands.

Plus like, slaughtering civilians. And invading a neutral nation.
>>
>>46599501

Self-Preservation and Expansionism have historically proven to be reasons to exist, especially when a charismatic despot is in command.

Doubly so when the despot may or may not use mind control.
>>
>>46592214
That's been obvious since WC3, when Kel'Thuzad was pretty much the same before and after lichdom, and Anub'Arak was able to snark about his kingdom being wrecked by Ner'zhul even while he followed Arthas' orders.

Ehh, I mean, there were a whole bunch of Warcraft RPG books printed for 3.0/3.5e D&D, and from what I can tell it's a fairly well laid out frame for a tabletop of WoW to be played.
I think it would make a fine setting, regardless. Even without using the strictly "WoW" classes from the books, the baseline D&D classes are usually close enough that they work thematically.
The most important thing would definitely just be the World itself, anyway, so it doesn't really matter..
I'd kill to play a WoW tabletop RPG.

>Does this put things in "a different Light"?
That depends on context. Dreadlords were demons in the first place, and that one looks like it's been set on fire and mutilated but in a nicer looking way.
>>
>>46604512
Kel'Thuzad was rezzed with the power of the sunwell making him unique among liches. You know, that giant surge of magic that turned him into a monster made him look like a monster.
>>
>>46604108
if you kill Arthas while playing as Anub'arak he says "FINALLY I'M FREE OF YOU" and his lines in the trailer make it seem like he's not under Arthas' control, which sort of points to Arthas maintaining control of him in the Nexus
>>
>>46602453
Cairne Bloodhoof

Best character born on Kalimdor, and the perfect mix of the desire for peace and the capability for war.

Also he was a lovely unit to have around during the orc campaign in RoC
>>
>>46604623

>We've all seen that shit already

I fucking know that, I saw it here before I saw it anywhere else.
That doesn't change the fact that it puts a demonic creature being transformed into a more "angelic" state out of the realm of abstract possibility and into the realm of shit that could very well happen.
>>
>>46604785
Weird. I guess the mind control is more thorough now. In WC3, he was a lot more wry about it, but that was before Arthas sat in Ner'zhul's chair. In HoTS, when he says "My service is unending," he sounds proud of it, rather than angry or resigned. Seems like Arthas is able to command his emotions as well as his obedience now.

So I'll be running a Warcraft game soon, kinda hype.

One guy likes high fantasy (doesn't like some of the technology he's seen. Or the fuckhuge shoulderpads), one girl who really likes wow, and our third player is tbd.

I had a few ideas for time periods/stories, but wasn't sure what would be better.
- just before WoW, just as all factions are settling in, working as guards to diplomats or something
- working for a startup guild doing "quests" through some major zones and dungeons up through all major content
- working for the scarlet crusade before/during it's corruption, then joining the argent crusade or something?
- Survivors of Lordearon following Jaina, and following some WC3 events then wow stuff?
- mary sue trip as a group of timewalkers for the bronze dragonflight, setting things right from moruzond and see important events?

Any ideas for cool stuff or other starting points? i.e. SW out to kill defies to defending redridge, jumping to larger areas or dungeons, etc?

They wanted pre-made characters, for ease of play, and one person requested 5th edition. I've yet to read it, but i have the basics of them. Is it easy to translate some classes between the two? I.e. prot pally is actual paladin, ret and holy clerics, etc? WTF would a shaman be?
>>
>>46602453
I had never thought about it too much before, but I'd have to choose Maraad. Never saw much of him until WoD, but I found him to be a redeeming feature of it. Seeing his story in his Lords of War video, and fighting beside him in game made him grow on me a lot. And while I was sad to see him go, I was proud to see him die while saving the life of another. Truly a great paladin.
>>
>>46605209
>ideas for cool stuff

well depending on their experience, if theyre beginners then the beginning zones might not be a terrible idea. have them as a group of mercenaries helping out X race in their starting zone and do the first dungeon for the faction

so deadmines/ragefire chasm. after finishing it go from there and see what they would like
>>
>>46605265
Yeah I thought about SW based guild, doing Defias run up and then deadmines, then building up to seeing the horrors of darkshire and the plaguelands, etc. Explaining the horrors or maybe what they saw as the third war occurred and seeing it's aftermath.
>>
>>46605209
>Any ideas for cool stuff or other starting points?
I had one idea. Basically a survival game. Ogres from Dire Maul got bored or gladiators, so set up shop in Un'goro and release slaves into the wild and watch their struggles via magical scrying or something. Also toyed with the idea of them getting caught in the crossfire between Silithids and the Cenarion Circle.
>>
>>46605209
An idea I always wanted to run was having the party be Orgrimmar's diplomat to Theramore and Theramore's diplomat to Orgimmar, along with their retinues, working together to squash diplomatic incidents before they arise. You could vary the tone from serious to silly session by session-- maybe one week Jaina has invited Thrall and his councillors to some prominent event in Theramore and the party needs to coach a bunch of orcs through a formal dinner and keep Garrosh from putting his foot in his giant mouth, and the next week it's brutal, dirty fighting in the sewers to keep some kind of radical from blowing up one of the capitals and interrupting a summit.
>>
>>46605153
Don't forget that Ner'zhul was leaking and had lost a lot of power by the time Arthas arrived.

Anub'arak was probably just barely under control and might've become another (less cunty) Sylvanas if he'd been further away from the lich king.
