Spartan is pulled off Headhunter reserve status to accompany an ONI team to a planet partially glassed by the Covenant. Their mission is to find an archaeologist who may have information on why the Covenant attacked the planet (or failing that, copies of her research files) and investigate a large structure revealed by long-range telemetry of the glassed region.

You're a Spartan that went through the augmentations but we're in such a catatonic state that you were thought dead. Being dead, they throw you out. However the augmentations then kick started your body but from this experience you suffer from anger issues and violently lash out at everyone. You are hunted by the government or ONI or whoever they are but you escape to a planet that's on the frontier and is being threatened by Covenant scouting parties. You engage them with the help of a small group of humans that have been defending against them.

Immersion broken. Failed Spartan candidates who were DEAD dead, as in dead and not coming back due to horrific mutations, were spaced. Failed candidates whose conditions made them literally non-functional as people were stored in cryogenic suspension, in case a treatment could be devised. Failed candidates who were still mentally functional and not in too much pain to live were transferred to ONI as specialists.

A Spartan was too heavy an investment not to make any possible use of them. A catatonic candidate would have been frozen for possible later re-use.

Pointing out that your scenario makes no sense within the setting doesn't make me mad, anon. And you don't "wake up" from cryo on your own in Haloverse, either. There's a whole defrost cycle that needs to be initiated deliberately and carefully monitored, because cryo can actually have nasty side effects.

This highlights the single most significant problem with fanfiction: if you don't really know the setting and can't be bothered to consult canon sources for answers, the result is usually half-assed.

You play as a party of ODSTs that are sent to break some insurrectionist supply lines on some backwater colony that has been deemed important by the UNSC due to Naphtali Contractor Corporation's facilities on the planet being threatened.

The quid pro quo that Naphtali and the UNSC have going is that the UNSC will far more actively fight the insurrection on the planets that it stations itself on in exchange for easier access to prototype MJOLNIR technologies that it produces.

It may or may not be the case, depending on GM preference, that Naphtali uses the local insurrectionist-leading populations as fodder for their live-fire exercises for the purpose of testing the offensive capabilities of their experimental variants, leading to the horrific distrust of the UNSC and UEG.

At some point the party takes down a massive supply convoy or a ship before it reaches dry dock or something and discover that the ship is in possession of modified Covenant technology. It turns out that the insurrection has struck a deal with Jackal space pirates and are exchanging arms for some kind of resource, probably drilling access or something.

The Covenant becomes privy to this shortly after the party does and decides to send a few ships to the planet to prevent the spread of the pirated weapons and to ensure that they don't fall in to UNSC hands so that they can be experimented upon and reverse engineered.

So you run the gamut from insurrectionist enemies to potential ONI/UNSC enemies to non-affiliated Covenant enemies to the actual Covenant arriving and potentially glassing the planet.

Contractors gain access to an ONI prototype thought to have been destroyed when a planet was glassed, and claim to have a Spartan in their group. The PCs, a Spartan-IV band of former ODSTs, are banded together as a clandestine killteam to confirm the existence of these ONI assets, reclaim them, and exterminate the force claiming to have them.

This will lead to discovering the "Spartan" is an ODST deserter in prototype Spartan-IV armor the group was friends with during the War, either chasing him down or catching up to join him as a result, and discovering (potentially posthumously) that their old pal's mission was to uncover some deep bullshit about an ONI coverup on some pretty high level War Crime shit they pulled off. Knowingly allowing a planetary genocide to secure a single mechanical asset being a keynote on the list. Even if the PCs try to be loyal little goons, knowing this exists proves to be too much for their CO and they're scheduled to die horribly.

So begins the pan-galactic chase scene as they try to outrun a trigger happy fleet. Their first attempt to go public will be turned on them to make it look like it was their actions (as criminal smugglers stealing hardware and wealth) that led to that planet's destruction in the war, and a convoluted series of dealings with shady assholes, ex-Covenant aliens and the occasional band of sympathizers to get their names cleared all while on the run.

Half of my group spent several years doing that, I doubt they'd want to pretend to do more of that now that they're home.
