What is the best class for solo adventuring in D&D?

What about the best class for team leader?
>>
fighters can tank and dish out damage, what more do u need
>>
Druid and Cleric would be the closest classes to being self sufficient.
>>
Cleric is the best class for solo play. Here's why:
>Can wear medium armor and still cast.
>Can heal and buff self.
>Can still dish out moderate combat damage.
>Has a constant supply of missions from his diety (or just wandering hobo if he's an atheist cleric like the fedora tippers want).
>Nearly always lawful good so no murderhobo tendencies.
>More role play wiggle room than a paladin.
>>
>>46491015
Is that guards art? I wonder if he knows /tg/ likes him.
>>
Wouldn't Arcane Trickster be a top solo pick?

You have both access to magic, decent physical ability, and usually more than a few bonuses to throw at interests and skills so that you'd always find work where you go.

It's basically like Disney's Aladdin or the Princes of Persia.
>>
>>46491015
Conjurer?
>or just wandering hobo if he's an atheist cleric like the fedora tippers want
This always pissed me off. Yes, we get you dont belive in god. But you are in a setting where god not only exosts, but does shit if you belive in him/her/them
>>

Rangers pretty good for solo play I've found
>>
OP here, the confession is that I'm writing a story and I'm wondering what's the best sort of person to serve as the core of a party and which I can stick other specialists on.
>>
>>46491356
Yeah, I know I'd make regular appearances at church if God gave me superpowers.

A rogue is probably the best solo adventurer. Almost always outnumbered, you need to pick and choose your battles carefully, and a stealthy character becomes almost a necessity. in 5e, they're also pretty good at just outpacing any pursuers and just generally being elusive.

Best leader is probably a Paladin. Charisma and wisdom with a strong sense of moral direction, they also can heal and defend while being hard to kill.
>>
>>46491339
Aladdin wasn't exactly the poster child for "solo adventurer."

Monkey, carpet, genie, and on some adventures even a princess and a tiger?

Also, why do those almost sound like classes in a weird game?
>>
>>46491015
Chronomancer
>>
>>46491015
I'd probably say Ranger for solo. A Ranger is good for having stealth, survival skill, various other skills, ranged, melee, decent armor, and a degree of utility spellcasting, including healing.

Of course, it depends on edition a fair amount, but the basic concept gives the most versatility of role.
>>
>>46491015
Depends on the edition, but Ranger is often a solid bet. Rogues can also be solid if they're specialized in skills. Paladins can be okay for solo games depending on the nature of the game. In PF I would go Inquisitor because it is straight up just a better ranger at times.

For leader roles? Paladins are okay if you're in a very specific kind of game. Otherwise, the Bard, Rogue, or Cleric are your best bets.

You do realize this is an absolutely pointless statement that makes you look like a petulant child, right?
>>
>>46492344
it CAN depend on the setting, but general archetypes tend to function the same between settings and a number of strategies hold true regardless of settings.
tl;dr: stfu.
>>
Arguably rogue since you can be in out of combat freely and stay out when things get hairy, scout and plan as long as they like without irritation other players, hardly ever be detected because some guy in plate is sneaking behind you, and have as loose a moral compass as you want without causing conflicts with the party. You can literally take your time and lure minions off one at a time to knock them out in a single surprise round of you want. Being a skill monkey certainly doesn't hurt either.

Bard gets honorable mention just because of jack of all trades.

As for leadership, Paladins, Clerics, and Warriors are great because they can walk in front of the party to guide them without fear, have lots of sustainability, and can be good buffers, combat manipulaters, or party faces.

Again, Bard gets honorable mention because of his ability to shore up whatever shortcomings a party might have as well as be a charmer and inspiration.

Thanks for the feedback.

Bard is a really cool class that I'd like to see used more often. I'll think on this.

Was getting killed by two goblins at level one because of one bad roll part of your master plan?

Properly Equipped Factotum and Properly Equipped Factotum

Speaking of, how best to Factotum in 5e? Bard with knowledge college?

TarrasqueGirl always knows best, rogue gets so many skill points it's objectively the best in a solo campaign.

Rogue is also a good leader in a slightly more amoral campaign, along with bard

What if the character in question was a wizard who wanted to hide his powerlevel by pretending to be another class?

I shiggy diggy.

What kind of rubbish clerics are you playing?

Best yes, the might CoDzillas are king. Hell just take a part of four of them and win forever.
>>
>>46491965
My friends and I freeformed a game once. We were Hunter, Genie, and Maid.

It was actually rather interesting as we all started as neutral characters who were bound to each other through crazy circumstances. The maid controlled the genie by stealing the lamp, but he worked for the hunter whose life was saved by the genie, so the hunter owed a life debt to the genie. Basically, we were forced into cooperation by obligations.

2ed answer is Necromancer with the Noble wizard kit. Best if your character is a little kid, is a lawful follower of Helm and one of the other characters is a Paladin of Helm.

>LN 12 year old little girl 1st level Necromancer hanging out around in a local park, playing with her crawling claws and skeleton rats
>1st level Paladin of Helm is offended
>Terrifies innocent child while threatening to kill her
>Child father is a follower of Helm and a 17th level Necromancer
>Paladin is dragged in front of local clerics
>Has WTF moment when he realizes Helm has LE Clerics
>Paladin assigned to be little girls bodyguard as penance.

And that is how my 12 year old Noble necromancer/cleric got a carriage, 2 crawling claws, 4 animal zombies, 4 embalmed zombie horses, a juju Zombie butler and a Paladin of Helm as servants at first level.
>>
>>46492344
You're wrong. It probably depends more on the system, but I appreciate the effort you went through to post that.
>>
>>46492886
You have no armor, no striking power, no ability to effectively dodge or outmaneuver anyone, and a single spell that takes a round to cast as long as no one is attacking you.

If you pick a wizard to solo campaign with, you might be retarded.
>>
>>46491254
>Cleric is the best class.
>It's like you took the GOOD parts of a wizard... and gave them to a fighter.
