Yes, it is. In 40k maxing out the Dev squads gives you meatshields and last-resort anti-infantry versatility, but in 30k, anything you need to shoot with 10 lascannon shots should be shot at by multiple units, preferably a mix of vehicles and infantry.

More missile launchers might be worth it, particularly in larger games, because of their decent effectiveness against everything, but, again, they need positioning and a turn stationary to be useful, and if they don't get that salvo off, you just wasted a lot of points on something that didn't do its job.

Alpha Legion's Infiltrate could make them work a treat, and maybe droppods, though I don't know the rule details for them because I never use them.

Yes, Dracosans with demolisher cannons instead of a TL lascannon. Cuts the transport capacity down from 20 to 10, but a 13/12/11 5HP transport with a demolisher is too good to ignore. If you really want to make them unkillable they can take armored ceramite and a flare shield. And on top of that there's the explorator adaptation that makes them void hardened and giving them a 6+ invuln against blasts and templates.

They're fucking amazing and one of the better units FW has produced.

Not really, only Fulgrim and Angron, maybe Cruze fit the definition of a tragic hero. Thing is tragic heroes aren't sympathetic to most modern readers because part of the definition is that you have a crippling flaw big enough to cause your downfall. Terminator Titanhammer Squads are a military formation used by the Space Marines.

These squads represent the indomitable spirit of the Space Marines in their battle against their enemies. They were pioneered by Captain Darnath Lysander of the Imperial Fists, and proved to be an extremely successful formation, as evidenced by their successful suppression and eventual extermination of the Legio Unctator.[1]

When the Unctator Titan Legion sent to support the Imperial Fists unexpectedly turned on them, they threatened to destroy Lysander's Astartes. Thinking quickly, he formulated a plan that involved the assembling of a number of Terminator Assault Squads armed with Thunder Hammers.[1]

Taking command of this new squad Captain Lysander and his retinue teleported to the bridge of his flagship, where the captain retrieved a single Vortex grenade. Commending their souls to the Emperor they teleported back down to the planet, emerging into the material realm within the void shields of one of the Chaos Titans. As it approached Lysander threw the vortex grenade, which disabled the Titan and created a hole within the massive machine. With this opening formed, the "Titanhammer" squad went inside the large machine and used their thunder hammers to destroy the Titan from within. This action was repeated with the other Chaos Titans, resulting in the destruction of the entire renegade Legio.[1]

Since that day, Lysander has always assembled Titanhammer squads to deal with Chaos forces' war machines. Furthermore, several more Chapters have followed Lysander's example.[1]

Why are White Scars so powerful, even with half rules ?

Anyone know of any decent bits for combat shields for bolt-pistol arms? White Scars are the goal, but generic would probably look fine.

Plus I've played Salamanders since I was 12, so Shattered Legions is where it's at.

I got one Fast slot and I'm torn between a Lightning and Storm Eagle. Lightning would give me some much needed anti-tank, but it's subject to AA. Storm Eagle would give me a transport for large squads and it can pack some anti-tank weapons as well, but I feel like it's one or the other, since dropping off dudes means it's turning itself into an easy target and if it's just flying around firing at targets, it's not serving as a transport.

The clouds parted. A shaft of hot, red light lanced down, striking the landing site in the centre. The growl of massed engines grew to a roar. Even with aural dampeners operating, Nethata found the wall of sound impressive. For the troops down below, it must have been painfully loud.

The wind picked up, pulling at his cloak and ruffling its fur lining. A gale swirled around the dais, flinging ash in all directions. The shaft of light grew in size, turning into a column of thundering, trembling flame. Other shafts joined it, until five mighty pillars of fire streamed down from the heavens and on to the wide ferrocrete arena below.

Moving with stately precision, five gigantic mass conveyors broke through the tormented cloud cover and descended planetwards on a shimmering cushion of heat-wash. Five vast engines threw immense quantities of promethium-blaze into the atmosphere, and even from many hundreds of metres away Nethata could feel the raw heat of it against his skin. Above the roar of the engines the structure of the landers themselves rose up in bronze and gold and crimson. The skull and cog insignia of the Adeptus Mechanicus was engraved into the sides of each one – ten metres in diameter and surrounded by strobing banks of lights. Above each insignia was another device: a black sun ringed with a coronet of electrical brilliance.

In stark contrast to the drab, functional vehicles of the Imperial Guard, these vessels were majestic creations. Every surface was covered in baroque bronze imagery – angels, demigods, mythical beasts, arcane machinery of long-forgotten provenance.

The earth beneath Nethata’s feet vibrated like a drumskin. Huge waves of heat from the engine discharge rolled over the dais, prickling his skin. He could see soldiers in the front ranks down on the plain struggle to hold their positions, craning their necks to take in the massive vessels as they descended.

With a heavy, echoing crash, the lead conveyor touched down. It sat heavily on the landing site, rising up like some towering edifice from the ferrocrete. Flames from its colossal exhausts rippled away, and the throbbing roar from its engines slowly began to wind down.

Once on the tarmac, the lander’s shape and purpose could more clearly be discerned. The ship was nearly twice as tall as it was deep and wide. Almost all of its bulk seemed to be taken up with a single immense load-bay. Tiny lights flickered at the very summit of the mass conveyor where, presumably, the bridge and control functions were housed.

The forward-facing flank of the ship was wreathed in steam. Despite that, two words could be made out across its surface, graven in High Gothic letters five metres high.

‘Legio Astorum,’ said Nethata, reading out loud. ‘They enjoy advertising their presence, do they not?’

Heriat let slip a wry smile.

‘If I had such toys to play with,’ he said, ‘I would too.’

Nethata laughed.

Once all five vessels had touched down and the deafening engine noise had died away, nothing happened for a full seven minutes. The conveyors settled on their landing braces and the smoke and steam of the descent gradually drifted away. The honour guard of mortal troops waited patiently, none of them uttering a word.

Then, without warning, a long, jagged crack ran down the front of the lead vessel. It was followed by a series of echoing clangs from within, then the throaty sound of fresh machinery gearing up. The crack widened further. The flank of the conveyor parted to become two doors, each propelled outwards by banks of enormous pistons.

Two gigantic treads were revealed at ground level, each one many metres across and clad in thick blast armour. Nethata’s eyes moved upwards, scanning across two colossal leg columns, corded with pistons and segmented into huge panels. Above those massive legs was an armoured torso, angular and multi-faceted. Atop it all was a skull-like head, crowned with a dim row of cockpit lights protruding from under hunched, sloping shoulders.

It was vast – almost indescribably vast. Enormous weapons – multi-barrelled and snub-nosed – hung from housings on either side of its flattened torso. Two more were mounted atop its armoured back like the dorsal spines of an animal. Steam cascaded down its flanks like cataracts down a mountainside.

Warlord, thought Nethata. By the Throne, it’s big.

With a grind and shriek of metal, the doors settled into their open position. Clouds of smog and smoke subsided across the landing site.

Nethata watched, and waited.

The warning klaxons died out. Lights flickered into life along the machine’s cockpit, and the acrid stink of void shield generators bled out into the air.

It didn’t move. Nethata knew that the god-machine would not take a single step for several hours; not while the machine-spirit within was sluggish from the orbital drop. Days might pass before it would be ready to deploy on the battlefront.

But it was alive. Nethata could feel it, as could every other soul lined up to greet the lead Titan of Battlegroup Praxes. The Warlord-class engine Terribilis Vindicta had come to Shardenus, ready to march alongside four other Titans of the fabled Legio Astorum.

A sharp snap ran through the air, followed by the hiss and boom of vox-projectors powering up.

‘Lord General Raji Nethata,’ came a broadcast voice from the Titan, so loud that it made the men on ground level visibly shudder. ‘Battlegroup Praxes, of Legio Astorum, the Collegia Titanica. Permission requested to deploy.’

Nethata smiled. The formality was unusual and the courtesy unexpected. Rauth had summoned the engines to Shardenus, and if any permissions were required then they should have been directed to him. Perhaps the princeps – whoever he or she was – was signalling a desire to respect the sensitive divisions of power within the Imperial forces. Or perhaps, as Rauth had not been able to attend, they merely addressed the most senior officer in front of them.

When he replied, his voice was similarly augmented, sent to a hundred relays placed across the landing site and audible from every corner of it.

‘Welcome to Shardenus, princeps,’ he said. ‘No permission is necessary; we are honoured to have you marching with us.’

So what's the word on using aquilas on non-EC units? Like can you have like a small aquila trinket (instead of a full chest plate one) as a service medal or unit citation?

If the aquila was the symbol of the Emperor (and thus limited in use), what was the symbol of the Imperium? I wanted to give units a Roman aquilifer style vexilla with the marine carrying a staff with an aquila top.

Yes, there are two types of aquilas.
One is the two headed kind, or the Palatine Aquila, which only the EC are allowed to wear.
The second one is a typical eagle and everyone is allowed to wear it

Khan slices whole chunks of armour and flesh off him, but it feels like they're fighting to a standstill. Khan can't kill him, and mortarion can't hit him solidly (because that scythe would perma-wreck khan). Eventually Mortarion calls it quits and teleports out.

The Martian Civil War will probably get a book of its own. Chronologically it should’ve happened already, but it will probably wait until the Mechanicum product line is closer to being complete so that the Mars book can finish it. I’m guessing it’ll be the last book before the Siege of Terra (which will probably get multiple books to really cash in).

There’s more than one book’s worth of Mechanicum stuff left to do: Secutarii, the Mechancium Land Raider equivalent, more automata (like the one that became the blight drone), characters, maybe a knight pattern or two… and maybe an Ordinatus Majoris or Imperator titan.

If it's the Martian Civil War it should probably include the Skitarii as well - Pre-Heresy they are the forces of Mars specifically.

Conquest felt like it was focused on a single theater, and it fit chronologically (i.e. not long after Istvaan V). It stood out as being primarily about Solar Auxilia and knights, but that’s fine. It was well structured.

I get that Retribution is trying to be about small-scale Space Marine actions so it doesn’t need to be chronological and the different pieces of fluff don’t have to be linked in any way. Xana and Mezoa were cool. But then we’ve got two stories of significant scope – even if it was a small force, destroying the World Eater’s mustering world is a big deal. Dismantling the Night Lords’ little empire is an even bigger deal. I would’ve left that one for a future book. Or will both of those legions only get minor attention in the future because they’ve been dealt massive blows?

Oh, and there was a story in between with the blackshields and a random encounter with Blood Angels and White Scars that didn’t feel like participating. What was the point of that?

In gameplay terms, too, it feels like the Retribution missions should be played with very different armies than you’d use for other 30k games. Which I guess I can’t complain about, but it was definitely a departure. It feels like a book that would’ve been more welcome after all the legions were out.

It seems that FW is phasing out the basic contemptor kit too.

Cool and fluffy, yes. Prepared to take on a Typhon? No. It has one mobile squad, and that mobility is fragile. Take out the Rhino and those enemy tanks have nothing to worry about as long as they keep moving.

At least take some Predators. You already have a Rhino hull, so it's not going to break the theme too much.

Feels like you're putting way too many points into this squad. I'd drop the Serpentas and Banestrike.

You are incredibly low on anti-tank, your regular opponent plays Iron Warriors. This is a Problem.

First thing I saw was you want to swap your Praetors MC power sword for a Paragon blade, and give him an Iron Halo.

You are running 4! recon squads. All with Sniper rifles. Snipers are a very niche weapon and not that great. They also make you a static anti-infantry infantry army. That is not really a place you want to be in.

To 'fix' this problem somewhat while keeping with the spirit of your army: Use the Recon Company RoW. This allows you to field all those Recon squads as compulsory troops (it may also prevent you from playing any tacticals, RAW. Though the RAI on that is debatable, you seem like the person who would happily run only recon squads)

Then you need something that packs a different punch. Some flyers would fit the kind of army and provide decent antitank shooting.

With Recon company you should be fairly immune to a Typhon on the first turn. infiltrate/scout into cover, +shrouded+stealth for a good enough cover save against that monster. But it does need to die quickly for your pure infantry army to survive. So any squad with meltabombs should be dropping the sniper rifles at the very least... weapons that require you to stand still aren't a very good combo with meltabombs.

There's plenty more to do to evolve your list, but I think these things make for a decent start.

So I get that you like infantry, but this list can't deal with really anything in the game, sure you have a lot of bodies to contest with, but It'll just be a slow (or fast desu) and redundant slaughter of a game.
Cut as much of the troops as you are willing to (say half) and replace it with whatever heavy support and/or elites you like (or that are just strong if you're feeling like one of those).
The list is way too redundant and has nothing to take on most of the units in the game, or move around the table reliably.
TL;DR: Cut some bodies and replace with jetbikes and sicarians, or whatever more fluffy option you want, say predators and DS termies.

I am not sure how you (and your group) see Orbital Assault. The way I see it you don't actually need to give everything a drop pod, it just needs to be able to take one or DS on its own. So regular deployment should be fine.

In Fear to Tread one of the possible futures that Sanguinius envisioned was him killing Horus, in a very open way (Spears Horus through the chest with his totally-not-Spear-of-Longinus).

To me that means Sanguinius was fully capable of the act, the future just never unfolded that they encountered each other on an even playing field (chaos no doubt had something to do with that).

I know it's somewhat tangential but I just through I would bring it up considering so few primarchs have been felled by other Primarchs.

You've gone overboard on the Veterans. Either kit them for CC or for shooting, don't buy expensive upgrades for both.

Why are you deep striking the missile launchers? It makes no sense. You are taking at least two turns away from them being able to shoot anything. Rather think of deep striking a big old tactical squad with apothecary to get in the way and say fuck you. Or maybe a support squad, or terminators/Headhunter with combi weapons.

You can save points by fielding the Mortis without havoc launcher. It's practically useless.

Most of all, as a whole, you are paying way too much in unit tax. Scrap at least one tactical squad and buy more squaddies for your other squads
