Why must sci-fi weapons look so goddamn stupid?

Yeah yeah I get it, you got the technology. But that doesn't mean you gotta make shit look stupid. No, adding 4 extra pointy ends to the thing isn't making it more effective. No adding a rotating laser chainsaw crossguard isn't either.

I mean, fuck, it's like adding lasers to a shark just because you can. It's redundant, why the fuck does a shark needs a laser?

Like, take >>46148144, that shit is efficient as it gets. What the fuck would a board with a nail in it look like in Sci-fi? Like some stupid heavy impractical thing. Well a fucking board with a nail is just as efficient and 100x cheaper. Wanna make it pratical with tech without making it stupid? How about you make a nail that has 10000x nano-jagged teeths in it like that of a great white shark so it sticks to flesh more? Now, that's futuristic, AND PRATICAL.

This reminds me of a discussion I heard in a gun store once

> "Hey I'm looking for a cougar and beard defense pistol that can also work as my EDC"
> "Alright, here we got a Glock 22. Now this one has been customized, they added front weights to it to counter the recoil from the .40 S&W. It has also been fitted with a trigger laser and flashlight. I also added a heavier barrel and a chrome slide to better withstand weather. Springs and slide stopper are also custom here. You can fire whatever rounds you want out of this baby and it's never gonna give up on ya.
> "Alright, how much you want for it?"
> " Well gonna cut you a deal and throw in this box of RIP ammo for the critters and this legit leather holster, all for $2500""
> "Ok, and what does this one do?"
> "That's a revolver, a Taurus 608. It fires 5 big ugly heavy .357 rounds."
> "How much for that one?"

The thing is Ivan.
When you dress nuke in shark costume
Then other sharks mate with nuke.
Then you have thousands tiny nuclear sharks roaming ocean.
Dificult to catch, but taste good too.
>>
>>46148797
well at least we did get the fucking krogan war hammer
>>
>>46148755
So much other sci-fi shit (like combat-effective lasers in the first place) relies on implausibly powerful batteries anyway so I figured power was unlikely to be that much of a problem.
I'll admit remote control might be less practical than putting a mediocre AI in the thing if you think you can trust them.
Also I assume if you're going for the shark option you're going for extreme stealth (on the principle that they can't distinguish your craft from local wildlife if your craft IS local wildlife) so probably in this situation a nuke is a little over-radioactive and a tiny bit loud for what you're trying to do at the moment.
>>
>>46148867

They'd probably be very similar to modern ones with perhaps better/more advanced construction.

If body armor tech advanced to very high levels you'd probably see stuff devoted to cutting through/around it (so an estoc made of very light and tough material probably).

A real weapon designed for war should always be practical over pretty, unless the prettiness is part of the practicality (like some kind of shiny distraction-cloth, as on a Chinese broadsword) or serves multiple purposes (i.e. the horsehair blood rags on Chinese spears that help you pull the tip out easier and make sure blood isn't running down the haft and making your hands slip).

On the tabletop, it's often to easily and immediately distinguish the Character of a unit from the rest of the unit at a glance.

In the fluff, it's generally up to the individual in question. It is acknowledged in the fluff that a Space Marine helmet has a wide range of tactical systems and provides oxygen and a hermetic seal, in addition to armor, but many Space Marines feel it's more honorable to fight without a helmet because of their pride. Some, like the Space Wolves, have natural senses that are impeded by the use of a helmet, so they almost universally do not wear them unless absolutely necessary.

If there's a risk of chemical warfare, void warfare, or extreme climate, they will put on the damn helmet in a heartbeat.
>>
>>46151316
Further, the black carapace under their skin means they're essentially always wearing armour. Per the fluff, you could empty a machine gun on their noggin and they'd wonder what was up with the insects this time of year.

>>
>>46152858
Stabby>Choppy
>>
>>46152875
I agree that, in almost any context, a rapier is preferable to a chopping sword and a stab-oriented knife is much preferable to a machete, but I think that either is, in any context, directly inferior to a sufficiently flexible gun.
>>
>>46152858
At least in modern day terms, spacesuits are made with the same materials and design considerations as bulletproof armor (to withstand being struck by tiny rocks in space). Ballistic weaponry would probably be much less effective at puncturing a suit and causing a leak than some kind of sharp blade would be (especially as the blade would be able to target and cut weak points in the suit), never mind the fact that aiming and firing a ballistic weapon in zero gravity would probably be pretty difficult.
>>
>>46152924
>aiming and firing a ballistic weapon in zero gravity would probably be pretty difficult.
I don't follow - why?

>Ballistic weaponry would probably be much less effective at puncturing a suit and causing a leak
I see what you mean, but I fail to see how this has much relevance. In the foreseeable future (next couple hundred years) much MUCH more fighting will be done on the ground than in space. Yeah, it's compelling to write about the small amount of conflict that may occur in a zero-gravity, zero-atmosphere environment, but I don't think it has any grounding in legitimate SCIENCE-FICTION (compare to SCIENCE FANTASY). Even then, navigating terrain is so much more difficult in zero gravity that a ranged weapon would probably be infinitely more effective than a weapon requiring close-quarters engagement.
>>
>>46152900
machetes are not going away though as they are quite useful as tools rather than weapons
>>
>>46152977

Recoil in micro-gravity turns the gun into a maneuvering jet.
>>
>>46153031
Yeah, I should stipulate that I mean in the context of martial conflicts.

That is, people with the capacity to be ideally armed for the conflict in which they are engaged.

Maybe, people fighting for the sake of non-governmental organizations will occasionally be armed with non-ballistic weapons for the foreseeable future, on occasion. Still, this will grow less and less likely.

My point is not about stabbing vs. slashing weapons, but more about the gradual decline and persistent clinging to of melee weapons. Eventually, there will be enough guns/gyrojets (whatever) that melee weapons will be a small (and underclassed) consideration in every martial context. It is only our cultural baggage that makes us retain these in RPG contexts, which I must add is not necessarily a bad thing. Jedi are fucking cool. They're compelling to read about in part because they use a weapon so ill-fitted for their context. But as time goes on, you need more and more handwaving to justify their illogical weapon choice. That's all.

>>46153081
Yeah, that's true, but you have, as mentioned previously in my comment, gyrojet weapons which use individually propelled ammunition rather than conventional rounds.

When we do actually see zero-gravity space conflict, I'm sure the necessary innovations will be made quickly and cost-effectively.

I'm not making this comment to shit on all the cool melee weapons in space - it exists mostly as a reality check. I totally agree with the rule of cool, but don't let it dictate your worldview.

I want to include melee weapons but I feel I need some kind of justification over why anyone would use a sword over a gun (or magic, if able).

so far excuses I have come up with are:
>rule of cool
>Extreme close quarters fighting with very limited sight lines combined with the protection offered by personal shields
>maybe the space magic shields are better at blocking bullets than swords for some reason? or perhaps the shields are not effective at all against melee weapons?

Swap the silly tanto bit for a hardened spike and it would be interesting. I always wondered why, with the prevalence of crazy ceramic super armor no one in the future has thought of something like a warpick. It's literally just the board with a nail in it taken to the end of its logical development, and it can pierce armor like nobody's business, there's a reason they were popular during the heyday of full plate

PlasSteel board with a diamond tipped anchor-spike in it, flexible plasSteel means it's harder to block than a wooden board even as it's harder to break, and the diamond tipped anchor-spike smoothly glides into whatever surface it hits, penetrating through whatever it touches until it hits base and then it suddenly embeds in a way specially calibrated so that instead of reinforcing the materal around it like the Anchor-Spike usually does instead it weakens and damage the surrounding material, meaning that it does most of its damage from being pulled out of what it's stuck in - it's ability to tear holes in ANY material is why anyone seen waving a board with a spike in it on a space station or space ship is generally targeted and taken out with a extreme prejudice before people using laser guns and other more obviously lethal weaponry

>Fact: Radiation from nuclear blasts fade away rather quickly.

Yeah, a bomb containing a few dozen kg of radioactive fuel, and which then spreads the isotopes created all around, isn't going to leave much radiation in any one place, so once the most active stuff has decayed things won't be so bad. Whereas an RMBK reactor has a fuel load of almost 170 metric tons of uranium.

We're still talking about a massive decontamination effort if you want to live there in the next few centuries though.

There's enough radioactive isotopes around form the nuclear testing that anyone, worldwide, born in the fifties and onwards can have his birth and death radio-dated through them.

Hell, I came up with a back story for a Gundam setting where they just started jabbing things into the atmosphere exchange ports to vent the suit.
This and a ban on using ballistic weaponry anywhere it could hit a Space Colony lead to the creation of giant mecha Mobile Suits.

Easy, the penetration power needed to get through the personal shields is far greater than what most starship interiors are designed to withstand.
Thus, in order to safely kill someone shielded without venting that section of ship, you need close quarters precision and limitation.

I always liked the idea of melee making a big comeback in a future of semi-realistic space vessels and stations, and in turn the use of a one-handed melee weapon or firearm in junction with a shield. The shields, though not large, could be very dense and multi-layered, as even simulated gravity would be weaker that a full g, and with future-materials they wouldn't even necessarily need to be all that heavy.

Additionally, because you would inevitably be wearing an EVA suit if you knew combat was eminent, 1/2 of your armaments would be built into the suit, or attached to the suit it's self. Not like, Iron-Man style where they're invisible until activated, but similarly they would fold up as best as they realistically could when not in use.

The armaments of the day would be semi-auto handguns/arm-mounts, shields, advanced knives, a kind of boarding harpoon or grappling launcher, and any proper ordinance would generally be provided by the ships, because if you're just there to kill people nothing'll do that faster than just destroying their ship.

Because most man-to-man fighting would be done form either the far side of tight halls, or face-to-face at junctures, I imagine handguns, knives, and notably compact semi-automatic rifles or shotguns would be the order of the day.

I liked the idea of melee weapons being the main goto weapon in a space based artificial environment like a ship or a station where you absolutely DO NOT want a stray bullet going through a wall and killing everyone.

So knives and clubs come back as the main means of defense in a space station market as everything else is forbidden on the rule of common damn sense.

shoot pieces of metal very very fast.

if you want to argue that you can use something like birdshot that won't damage the hull then you might as well use fucking nerf guns. Anything with enough stopping power to reliably stop a human is going to be strong enough to damage the computer in charge of maintaining oxygen, the pipes pumping the oxygen, the wires keeping the lights on or any other number of things that are keeping your space ship working.

>buckshot cannot really harm the side of a car
And if we made delicate electronics out of car doors you might have point. except you still wouldn't because you're lying out of your fucking ass.
>exterior damage
You realize that when discussing a fight INSIDE a spaceship that kind of implies the INTERIOR right?

The threshold between "can kill or stop a human" and "won't cause damage to your ship" is nonexistent. Would you fire a shotgun INSIDE your car? would you rely on birdshot to actually incapacitate someone trying to kill you? Are you actually this stupid or is this half decent bait?

If nothing else, firing a shotgun in a sealed metal can of a ship would blow your fucking eardrums out, the particulates would wreak havoc with the system, and igniting an explosive is fucking stupid in a highly oxygenated environment.

But I think you may be wrong. I´m in the navy. Now weaponry isn´t my specialty but I know what weapon-systems we have, what weapon-systems our probable enemy has, what counter-measures we have and what they have.
And I must say, that weapons/counter is getting so advanced today they are almost even. And considering how fast these things gets more advanced and accurate, modern weaponry are almost obsolete and useless because the counter-measures are (or almost are) equally advanced and accurate.

My point being, we are almost at a point were modern missiles/torpedos wont penetrate the ships defense-systems at all, so the most useful weapon to sink another ship right now is a 1000years idea of a metal pipe pushing a couple of kilos of metal/gunpowder into another ship.

- The stuff pipes running everywhere is under a ton of pressure and will kill you if you're in the path of a pipe rupture.

A flat bladed machete still has an edge perpendicular to the length. If it was blunt tip that rounded back, he would've had a little more trouble breaking skin.
The shovel thing is a little dumb, as the edge is thin enough in comparison to the surface space of a persons torso to create the tension/torque to break skin.
Think about trying to break skin with a sledgehammer, you can break skin with the corners and edges, but the sides' comparative thickness is too wide.

I think they where just making a point that if you apply enough force you can impale someone with anything.

Also making a point about how absolutely brutal people can be.
>>
>>46149397

>Is it because they have a lex Luther style energy shield around their exposed noggin?

For the fancier dudes, yes, they have those, but it's too expensive to give to everyone, so most dudes wear helmets.

I don't know about basic squad sergeants, though. They might just have balls of steel.
>>
>>46161150

Chain-weaponry in real life would make absolute sense if we had the tech to make it work and we had to cut through the kinds of armor they do in 40k.

People who say otherwise are retarded.

>>
>>46161340

They are basically high-tech chainsaws.

However the teeth are made of a metal that's both incredibly sharp and strong enough not to wip or kick back when it makes contact with something that it can't cut. When this happens it starts chipping away at it. It also rotates fast enough to cut things instantaneously, like a sword would, and also making it harder to clog (tho it does happen and there's a mention somewhere in a Chaos codex where Kharn gets Gorechild clogged and has to kill people with his hands).

Apparently the teeth also vibrate incredibly fast, making them vibro-blades, which help with the cutting part. Then there is some piece of tech that stabilizes the blade and allows you to manuever it while the teeth are spinning (in real life, a chainsaw can only a certain way and not change direction, because some physics phenomenon makes it hard to chance the blade's direction when the teeth are spinning) .

And even with all this, the lore mention they break constantly from hard use and need to be repaired (with the exception of Chaos weapons which repair themselves or never actually break), which adds to the realism, even the most complex engineered crap will break irl.

>>
>>46161262
Oh, I wasn't criticizing. Just working it out outloud. Basically just working out how forcing a blunt object through a cut is the same and not the same as impaling.
Sure, with the machete, it's as simple as using the edge where the top and front meet to create a gash then going the opposite way (parabolic arc) to impale, but that'd simply never happen with an identical machete with that edge filed down. So, if we're counting the second acting as the impaling then you can basically impale with anything, granted theirs a breach in the skin. Baseball bat, cup, remote control, etc.

Sounds like Doc Smith, maybe a later later Lensman verse novel. Fun fact: Lensman was one of the direct inspirations for Silver Age Green Lantern.

It's mostly for aesthetics but as someone who wears an actual combat helmet quite regularly, I can tell you that helmets are very annoying and kinda screw with your peripheral vision and awareness a tad bit. If it were up to me I wouldn't wear one.
>>
>>46163503
Like I said, it sounds like a later novel. Not necessarily Doc Smith himself, but someone writing in the Lensman universe.

Oh boy oh boy, let me tell you about this "future" weapon featured in Devil May Cry 4 used by the character Nero.

So basically what this sword does (The sword is called Red Queen if you were wondering) spray gasoline all over the god damn sword and whatever you hit, and in the case of Devil May Cry, it's everything. It's done by replacing the entire hilt of the sword with a motorcycle handlebar/brake. When the sword gets "Revved" it just sprays gasoline fucking everywhere right? Well after you cover everything in gas you pull the brake which makes a small ignition and just causes everything to light the fuck up in fire
>>
>>46170512
Don't forget when he impaled one of those demons to the ground and revved Red Queen causing him to ride the demon around like a hoverboard as he ran over other demons
>>
>>46170417
Because back in the 70's everyone and their mother where perfectly fine with carrying a snub nosed .357 or a .45 and gasp, fucking .38's. Revolver's where the shit and heavy pistols with lots of recoil where the shit and nobody cared about having a little bit of weight in their waist.

My granddad carried a goddamn .44 because he liked to feel like Dirty Harry. People tried robbing him at gun-point 3 times and each and every time he got the best out of them.

Now a days plebs that read up about guns on wikipedia and give in into youtube gun hype say idiotic shit like .45's being pea shooters, .22 being ineffective for anything (the fucking SEALS use .22's), 38's being stupid. These people bitch about a 2 pound revolver being too heavy. About .357's being too strong. Yadayadayda. People that never actually used guns besides for target shooting wanting to be experts on what everyone should carry.

Taticool is the norm nowadays, not fucking functionality.

it is supposed to be a bearded axe. The "bearded" design is for hooking and grappling

but tomahawk or not, the cutting edge wouldn't be straight, the blade on the back is near useless, the remote detonated whatever those are are stupid, a hollow barrel in the part of the shaft that needs to be the sturdiest is stupid, and they mention a steel handle which shifts the center of balance down away from the axe head, which is not what you want for an axe.

the amount of steel on the weapon looks like it would make it weigh about 15 pounds as well, but I can forgive that because rule of cool

>>
>>46174006
I know it's not practical...though clearly that's what this thread is about.. the only reason I can think for the back and front's cohesion is that it's based on a tomahawk, where it's all one piece of stone and balanced for throwing.
That said, this is clearly not one piece and only practical in the sense of being "like a tomahawk".
The actual blade is based off a saxon axe, which is understandably since the theme with what's written is norsk.
I'd say it was designed for aesthetics, though I'd have to say that they're are survival tools that look like that, but the back isn't really a blade, it's a tool for prying.
Ok, gonna look up bearded axe because I learned something new n I like digging in and getting to understand things.
>>
>>46174006
Damn, just read about it. I never realized how general I was being just calling it saxon. Nice, man.
Also, I didn't say it in the above, but I kinda do enjoy the aesthetics of it a lot.

>>46174111
I mean yeah that's fair that isn't isn't really the place to discuss practicality

I am a sucker for chunky weapon designs personally, even though they are usually terrible are actually being weapons

in games, both traditional and modern, chunky weapon designs serve an extra purpose of being more distinct at a distance. (consider 40k weapons. Does it really make sense that a rifle might be 4-5 inches thick? not at all, but it makes it easier to see on a miniature from 3-5 feet away)
>>
>>46156559
That's superb. Imagine saboteurs using those, sneaking around a ship poking ragged holes in important shit. I love the idea of a tool/weapon specifically made to do irreparable damage. You could do a lot of damage by ruining all the spacesuits and oxygen producers, then poking hundreds of holes to let the oxygen seep out.

Assuming the saboteur can consistently stop things being repaired, and can make several large holes in hidden places without getting caught, they could bring their own oxygen supply and gradually kill off a whole ship during a long distance sublight space voyage.

Imagine a ship pulling into port after a century or more of travel, being coralled into docking position by tugs and the ships computer, only for the entire crew to be dead on arrival, all from suffocation, hundreds of almost perfect corpses floating around or caught on furniture.

No one sees the one man pod slip silently out of the underside of the ship, and attach itself onto the engines of another freighter, like just another piece of complex machinery. The saboteur later escapes into the settlement attached to the port, where they collect their payment.
