Medieval knights and shit are all well and good, but where's the Antiquity fantasy? Where's the pseudo-legionnaires and Successor kingdoms. Fuck your full gothic plate, I want my Linothorax. Screw your claymore, I want a Rhomphaia!

Not that I hate medieval stylings, I'd just love to see more of the Roman/Han era get more play in TTRPGs. Anyone have any stories or settings set in Antiquity they'd like to share?

Here's my story about a short campaign I GM'd in Pathfinder. Small party; a half-elf bard, a human rogue, and a human fighter. They were grouped around the bard who was on something of a religious pilgrimage heading from not-Persia to the west. They stopped in a not-Canaan town caught up in some trouble with banditry and merchant rivalry. Camels had been disappearing, and each of the merchant families blamed the other, and had started retaliating. The group was well received in town, and celebrated when the bandits were dealt with with a great party.

The next day though, it turned out the camels were still disappearing which led to more accusations being thrown around and so on. The party decided to watch the camels from concealment, and turns out it was a griffin. Cue camel stampede they had to stop. Turns out the griffin was pissed off because someone in town was stealing griffin eggs to sell. They tracked down the seller and drag him out to return the eggs to the griffin and apologize. All is happy in not-Canaan, so they head on to not-Greece, just in time for some local political shenanigans involving a gargon. Best part was an assassination attempt in the middle of a political rally when the characters' comprehend languages spell wore off.

There is Glorantha, and I think Fantasy Craft had a Roman-themed setting. I'm sure there are others as well.

*Actually Medieval* fantasy in and of itself is rare. Any genre of RPG that's particularly faithful to a given time period requires an incredible amount of heavy lifting on the part of the designer and GM, and likely a group of players that have at least a passing familiarity with material. Hell, you'd almost want a person that knows some latin for a Roman-themed game.

Yeah, if you want actual historical RP then I can't help you much.

But if you want the feel of it, of heroes like Achilles, Hector, Odysseus, and Aeneas... the clash of the hoplomachia, and the wafting of incense and prayers on the wind, Glorantha's a good start.

I'm running a game right now where there's a medieval federation of kingdoms that is being manipulated into starting a war with the not!Roman Empire by a secretive group. The players haven't gotten to the actual empire just yet(if they ever survive), but I've dumped some hints about their culture here and there.

>Dark Elves, Orcs, Half-Orcs, Hobgoblins, and Goblins make up 1/3rd of the entire imperial legion. They are respected as citizens and are fully capable of positively benefiting society.
>there are specialists who ride giant bees or insects as scout forces
>It is known that the empire does have a senate and governors that rule their respective provinces
>One of the antagonists the players came across was an imperial merchant, equipped with a stereotypical Italian accent and gladius
>Another antagonist was an experienced Gladiator with a Spaniard flair

Right now, one of the players has recently become king of one of the nations in the federation and is working against starting war. They're about to head to the capital to discuss this issue with the other rulers before the decision is final.

Little do they know that the federation capital is will basically become the medieval analogue of Carthage should they fail to stop the war from happening.

It's a late bronze age, early iron age fantasy world. The major cultures that most focus on are a group of storm worshipping barbarians (as seen here) vs a moon worshipping Empire.

The equivalents of Elves, dwarves, and trolls are kind of different as well, being plants, minerals, and hungry.
>>
>>46155605
Reading a bit about it right now, King of Sartar seems to be the easiest way into that setting.
>>
>>46155637

The areas around Dragon Pass are definitely the most developed parts of the world. King of Sartar is definitely not a bad place to start; neither is King of Dragon Pass, which lets you found the Sartar Tribe and go through all the myths and challenges that Sartar did.

For getting new players into the game, it's hard to go wrong with Apple Lane. It just got rereleased with the Runequest 2 kickstarter, and it's as iconic to Glorantha as Keep on the Borderlands or Queen of the Demonweb Pits to D&D.

I'm playing a Roman fantasy game in Song of Swords right now, which is going well. Lots of opportunity for adventure in partially conquered Gaul, and some fun imagery that you miss in Medieval fantasy.

I like it so much that I'm going to try a Glorantha campaign later. Either in SoS or RuneQuest 6, for a change of pace. I'm digging the bronze.
