Are you including the Heritage feats in Bloodforge in this estimation?

I'll ponder the rest of this - and potentially act on it - when I get home from work. I need to get ready and go, but you have my endless thanks for taking the time to read and comment.

How do you not die as a magus?

Light armour, you'll maybe have 20AC by level 10. Enemies around that level will hit you more than two thirds of the time and your hit dice isn't great, since you'll be maxing INT, then STR, then CON, I assume.

Greater invisibility/mirror image can help but you're forgoing your first turn to achieve a level of defensive capability that other classes can have on all the time.

Judging by my experiences with a Magus among the players... by murdering everything before it gets the chance to hit you. Recently threw a CR linnorm at the party, level 10, and the magus solo'd it in two rounds. Took some damage himself, but if you pile on all the damage you can, it's entirely possible to wreck everything in the way until you run out of arcane pool.

How is Sleeping Goddess? I never really looked at it before PoW:E. It seems like it has some interesting utility, if not huge damage.

I'ma post this before I head to work.

Playtesting on Lords of the Mists - the Midway Faire is still ongoing. You can find the document here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pBP7kQ14gCc-xTsjIdK7EJov38IpDZFG73anj6KyifI/edit?usp=sharing

Potential problems have been identified in Bean Sidhe (in Prophetic Wail), as well as with the Oaths in the new Rose Enforcer archetype. I'm still looking for additional data and feedback on the feats, traits, and fluff.

In a related story, if there is an anon or group of anons willing to get in touch with John Reyst of D20PFSRD and put up at least the feats section of Bloodforge, you'd find me appreciative and also willing to accomodate/help, esp. if there's folks that can do the work but don't have a copy of the PDF (I'll take "reasons Gareth has permission to give books away" for $1,000, Mr. Trebek).

Uh, how? Surely two uses of shocking grasp won't be able to do that?
>>
>>46116184
No, you can't use magic to kill a linnorm, that automatically makes it not sanctioned. The magus gets to get fucked in a pile of faggots like every other subhuman caster pleb.

Speaking of, what level should you be as a Zweihander Sentinel Warder to have a reasonable chance at soloing a Linnorm?

Let's say it's an Ice Linnorm, since Crag's too easy.

>>46116205

You can absolutely use magic to kill a Linnorm, the Campaign Setting book on the LotLK says the Ulfen see magic as a tool just like any other (it's why they allow enchanted gear and wondrous items during a hunt.)

>>46116250
As the anon who designed the build in question; Level 15 for tor Linnorms, and then it's fairly easy, if tedious.

Fafnheir requires at least level 17 minimum, and even then he's a hell of a fight.
>>

PFSRD benefits everyone. Besides, it's not like our work doesn't get pirated.

Oh.
Yeah I can see why that would do a lot of damage. If you crit on the melee attack, would that mean you'd double the damage of the shocking grasp too?

4th level spell slot, deal 60 extra damage looks amazing.

Then again, I could just play a wizard with a staff of the master and fireball people with the maximised metamagic feat.
>>
>>46116142
That's patently false. A one level dip into Inspired Blade let's you take Fencing Grace at level 1, since it grants you both Weapon Finesse and Weapon Focus (Rapier).

Plus it gets you opportune party and riposte, which is actually pretty useful.

If you want to be a Dex-based fighter in 1pp only material, it is a great way to get Dex-to-damage at first level.
>>
>>46116223
>>46116184
>>46116205
Where can I find information on Linnorm-Hunting anyway? Our party's headed to the Linnorm Kingdoms and I want to know if accidentally landing the last blow on one gets me stuck as a Linnorm King. Can an entire party fight one, or is it a solo endeavor? If it's the former, how does one determine who gets to be king?
>>
>>46116369
It's solo. You can get your friends to help you look for one, but you fight it yourself with no spells, and even Estrid using a magic weapon started a huge argument about whether or not that was legit.

You've got little chance of ever being a linnorm king, since your solo DPR without spells is roughly nothing. Sorry, mate.
>>
>>46116434
Oh, I'm not the magus, I'm just curious overall.
>>
>>46116361
a human kensai magus can also take fencing grace at level 1
>>
>>46116434
>You've got little chance of ever being a linnorm king, since your solo DPR without spells is roughly nothing. Sorry, mate.

The problem Estrid ran into was she didn't *kill* her Linnorm and the weapon she used was supposedly aided to her by earth spirits. An Ulfen is well-within their power to use enchanted items, but from Estrid's boasting it seemed like she was just handed an artifact expressly used to fuck Linnorm up.

Remember, the Rixbrand is a legendary greatsword used to hunt Linnorm and it's enchanted to shit, the Ulfen only care about the one-on-one struggle, spells prepared or magic items used is clever, not cheating.

>>46116369

You have to be at least 15th level to initiate the hunt, and you can only make the hunt if you're famous enough to earn the attention of Ulfen nobility. A Linnorm hunt must be observed by impartial third parties who make sure nothing illegal is done during the hunt.

You're allowed help up to the Linnorm lair, but the party is not allowed to help you in the Linnorm fight itself.
>>
>>46116434
>>46116369

It's also worth mentioning the sanctioned hunt is only there to confirm and solidify your rule; Opir Eightfingers merely showed up to Jol one day with a decayed Linnorm head, and although he was given a fuckton of flak for it and had to fight numerous duels to defend his title, he was still deemed a Linnorm King.

The rules aren't as strict and unyielding as you might think, it all comes down to how prestigious and secure you want your position to be (someone like Sveinn Blood-Eagle did his hunt the "right" way, and he's regarded as the greatest of the Kings for that reason while Opir is seen as a sniveling worm.)

Dread Vanguard Antipaladin: worth it?

I mean, you give up spells, but the beacon ability that you gain is a better version of bless/heroism/greaterHeroism, along with actually decent in-combat healing (fast healing 3 for the whole party at 8th). And you get tripled aura reach, and ranged touch of corruption... and the antipaladin spell list is kinda shit. Am I missing anything that's really worth keeping the casting, as opposed to just throwing ranks into UMD for the odd wand?
>>

It does, though. Mostly because 2H Str-based martials are the easiest to get going, and S&B is pretty weak unless you go TWF.

Also because there's nothing cooler than a single man in heavy armor with a big weapon defending his friends against the ill will of those that would do them harm.

Well, Gaspodar was the last king of the old empire, but it was fully expected by everyone that he would just hand over the crown to Aroden upon his return. The old monarchy was really just an extremely long-term divine-mandated regency in Aroden's name.

And then Aroden died, and Gaspodar failed to keep the empire together despite granting tons of authority to the Hellknights, and eventually he went senile and was assassinated. The last battle of the Chelish Civil War didn't even have any royalists participating, it was just down to which of the noble houses would claim the throne.

>>
>>46117784
Depends. If you use Paizo's somewhat recent FAQ on the matter that retroactively changes the rules, d10. This also fucks a lot of progressions and renders the standard order of 2 steps -> double damage false.

If you go with the books, d8 scales to 2d6.
>>
>>46118122
Paizo's FAQ made up a mess of die steps and size increases. In terms of die steps, it goes 1d2>1d3>1d4>1d6>1d8>1d10>2d6>2d8>3d6>3d8>4d6>4d8 and so forth, with the rule that anything with a die bigger of 1d8 of higher went up two steps per size increase, but anything of 3d6 or higher went down two steps per size decrease.
So a katana getting one die step will go 1d8>1d10, when a large katana is 2d6, and a large katana will go 2d6>2d8 with daisho.
>>
>>46118255
>This also fucks a lot of progressions and renders the standard order of 2 steps -> double damage false.

I'm pretty sure that an Ethumion Mystic will still work passably. It sounds more like he wants to triple wield weapons than do anything fancy, and the Mystic has a bunch of stuff built-in that should make it useful, even if he's really heavily invested in hitting stuff.

The fact that nobody outright called him a retard or whatever is a good step. It's still not a GOOD idea, but damn if it isn't one that sounds fun.

>If a member of the collective dies, the member is removed from the collective and the zealot must make a Fortitude save (DC 15) or lose 1 power point for every Hit Die of the fallen member or be sickened for an equal number of rounds.
What exactly does the "or" mean? Do you choose which penalty you get?
>>
>>46119822
You make the Fort save to avoid losing power points
>>
>>46119822
Technically yes, as you can voluntarily fail the save, but the intent is you roll the save and suffer the penalty if you don't pass.
>>
>>46119883
>>46119887
I mean the second "or".

If you don't make the Fortitude save (say, because you rolled a 14 or less) the alternative happens, which is losing 1 power point per HD of the dead guy and getting sickened.

Haven't decided yet, as none of them really fit well. The closest is either Exposed to Awfulness, or I can really stretch it and select Child of the Crusades.
I'd probably go with the former though, since it makes most sense for someone that was born and raised in Lastwall, and perhaps ask to replace the bonus for that trait for access to Unquiet Grave, then take the other trait to grab Guardian, that way I won't have to join a Tradition.

>"Casting Spells While Mounted: You can cast a spell normally if your mount moves up to a normal move (its speed) either before or after you cast. If you have your mount move both before and after you cast a spell, then you're casting the spell while the mount is moving, and you have to make a concentration check due to the vigorous motion (DC 10 + spell level) or lose the spell. If the mount is running (quadruple speed), you can cast a spell when your mount has moved up to twice its speed, but your concentration check is more difficult due to the violent motion (DC 15 + spell level).

most likely you want 2x move action at normal speed of an horse ( who is already faster than most humans) so you'll be at your concentration check vs 10+spell level.

now the concentration roll is
>When you make a concentration check, you roll d20 and add your caster level and the ability score modifier

at level 5 a wizard (+5 to ceontration checks) should have 22 int, which means a +6 to concentration checks and has to roll 13 to cast his level 3 spell. effectively you lose the spell only on a 1.
after that you should always have 100% of succeeding the concentration check and a completely acceptable chance of being able to do when running.
you still take penalties if you do a ranged attack when double moving and your DM might increase the concentration DC for weather effects.

i think that your horse being a weak target that can be fucked over by a spell and other annoying stuffs is more relevant than the concentration check, but hey: it seems to require no feat and minimal skill point investment to use it, so might as well try it out.

>>
>>46119968
The plan was actually to use a Druid, not a Wizard. I've found that it becomes harder to get an 18 pre racial in any stat with Divine casters due to their slightly more MADness than Wizards. The Mount would be a Roc animal companion, so I'm not too worried about the mount being weak.

i was using wizard as the worst case scenario.

Druid is a worse caster that gets his power from being able to turn himself into a tanky/sneaky/flying animal so he can his spell slots to do stuff instead of protectinh himself like a wizard need to do in many cases.
he also has either a fighting pet or a domain to do extra stuff.

in this optic it sounds a terribly bad idea to waste your companion to carry your ass leaving the best uses for your wild shape inutilized.
but if you have a really clear idea on how to use your daily wildshapes effectively or have an idea on how to fight with your mount instead of just running, or you have ana rchetype that replace the wild shape, then go ahead.

Actual vampires are a bit above your standard PCs, even with all their vulnerabilities. However, there's a race called Dhampir that's basically the vampire equivalent of a Tiefling, so that can get you the flavor without unbalancing things too much. Start there.
>>

Blood of the Night has some suggestions on this, but most of them are of dubious help. DSP's Lords of the Night has an alternate vampire template meant for PCs that's definitely less over-the-top than the normal template.

Question, good /pfg/ fellows.

The eidolon's Reach (ex) evolution states:

> One of an eidolon’s attacks is capable of striking at foes at a distance. Pick one attack. The eidolon’s reach with that attack increases by 5 feet.

And the Summoner's Shield ally (ex) ability states:

> At 4th level, whenever a summoner is within his eidolon’s reach, the summoner receives a +2 shield bonus to his Armor Class and a +2 circumstance bonus on his saving throws.

So, would the area covered by the Shield ally be increased by 5ft if the Summoner's eidolon take Reach evolution? Or would it be unaffected because Reach only applies to only one of its attacks? And what if said eidolon has only one form of attack?

Orcs and half-orcs use them for free, same with lots of deity-weapon-granting options. Falchions also have a more stable damage output because of their two dice. It's definitely conceivable a player would willingly sacrifice 0.5 average damage for the dramatically lower chance to get your low-end rolls instead of the average.

However that all falls to shit when size increases come into play, because 2d4 will step up to 2d6 and 3d6, while 1d10 steps up to 2d8 and 3d8.

They are. They don't have that bullshit wording that means that you provoke AoOs when you attack with them without IUS (like gauntlets do), they have a better crit range (the best of all "unarmed" weapons), they can pierce two types of DR, and above all, they're fucking cheap.

You buy only one and just punch folks with it. Since you've got a free second hand, you can avoid the penalty wearing a Cestus imposes most of the time (until you need both hands, then you're kinda SoL). It also makes a great offhand for people who are doing asymmetrical TWF, because you can just grab your primary weapon and 2H it for AoOs and junk, then swap back to 1H + Cestus for taking your iteratives.

I fucking love me some cestii.

The best way to use Steel Serpent imo is to stack it with: sneak attack dice and lots of attacks.

You want to be attacking your opponents weak saves, and key stats, like a wizard's int or a cleric's wis. Your ultimate goal is to stop them from casting.

Statblocks are all straight up replacing the homunculus' blocks, meaning FUCK POISON, and I hope nobody wanted natty attacks because you ain't gettin' shit. >>46124312
I'm pretty certain if you count as undead for channeling you won't heal yourself when you use Shatter Resolve, because you are using the harm mode and the harm living mode doesn't heal undead.
>>
>>46124312
Holy Vindicator is pretty Solid. Just ignore that one shield ability.
Ferocity is a pretty good Domain.
>>
>>46124284
3rd is a good starting point.

Initiators are still martials. They generally don't have daily resources at all, only encounter-based ones. Don't try to wear them down by attrition like you would a caster; instead, design encounters that are challenging due to pressure, not resource expenditure - AoE effects that they can use counters to evade that grow larger or nastier as time progresses, or get them to think it's an APL+1 encounter and surprise them with an APL+3 by adding in two more monsters 3 rounds into the combat from somewhere that's not advantageous for them.

Parties without crafters won't have customized items on-hand. Give them opportunities to shop for things, and NPC crafters that they can work for who will make certain things for cheaper.

Consumables that can save their bacon are more valuable. Only one discipline can teleport at all, but a potion-like item that casts Dimension Door once and that's it with no UMD needed works for anyone.

Ultimately they're still martial. Use martial-centric environmental features like cover, concealment, fog effects, etc. that care more about positioning than anything else. You can use low-CR traps that they can see without a check as part of the environment as encounter hazards in fights where you don't want groups of creatures.

Most importantly, never ever give them solo opponents. There is no way to reliably balance for a PoW party in that circumstance. It can be done, but not easily or consistently, so don't.
>>
>>46124312
If you are using Shattered Resolve, the spell "Doom" could be of use to you. It causes a target to become Shaken for several minutes, meaning every time you have Shattered Resolve shaken put on them they will be Frightened.
Aura of Doom is similar, but i can't tell how long the Shaken effect lasts, I'm not sure if it's till Aura of Doom times out or whilst they are within the area.
Vision of Hell might be a smart idea too.
>>
>>46124500
This is solid advice. For all the shiny bells and whistles Initiators get, they're still just guys who want to hit the bad guys with a stick. They're damn good at it, and have tools to let them be good at some other stuff, too, but they generally can't just wave their hands and have problems go away.

>>46124569
Pretty specifically NOT how that works.

Both Doom and Shatter Resolve specifically state they make the target Shaken, and you cannot upgrade to a stronger state of Fear (frightened, panicked, etc.) unless it says it does so.

Making a Cohort in 3.5 (This seems to be the only place o get 3.5 help anymore)

I'm thinking either a support char or another melee guy... possibly Hulking Hurler.

Or, you could play a Ragechemist to say that you manufactured these changes yourself. I don't know how you would get rage powers without multiclassing.

You want some warder stories, G?
How about this one:
>We just hit level 20 and the campaign is about to wrap up in the next 5-6 sessions
>GM means to destroy our base of operations so that we go full-force ultra-destruction mode on the BBEG
>An army of demons marches in through our front door
>My party bails out instantly like the cowards they are, leaving all of our friends to die, citing that "oh we'll just get a bunch of money and resurrect them later!!"
>My warder is the only one who doesn't run
>Park my ass in front of a door, behind which is about 15 NPCs, scared shitless with their only option for escape a lengthy teleportation ritual
>Drop demons left and right but eventually get overwhelmed, about to die
>Deathless
>Defenses
>Hold out for 12 turns, just enough time for the enchanter NPC to finish crafting a teleportation circle and get everyone out of there
>Finally run out of armiger's mark, hero points, and dice luck
>Die standing, hammer and shield still in hand
That was actually the first character death I've ever experienced, usually the games die before the characters do, for me.
They built a statue for him in the capital. Standing with his shield up, in front of a closed door.

The last time I played a wilder, I emphasized surging euphoria and wielded a polearm, spamming a cone-shaped power (crystal shards or some such name) to soften things up first and trigger the euphoria for that weapon attack and damage bonus, and I never managed to suffer enervation, which was also nice.

Slightly to moderately wrong, depending on the discipline. Most of the maneuvers are the same, but a few end up getting reworked entirely, whereas some are just tweaked.
The release of PoW:E added some neat new stances to a few disciplines too.
>>
>>46126946
"not paying $15 for content you love and use regularly" wrong.

Cleavage has and always will be something you should simply treat like the sun.

Sometimes it's out, sometimes it's not, but you're never supposed to look at it directly, and if it's particularly glaring you're allowed an annoyed comment.

Gumiho are not kitsune.

>>
>>46128666
For a Magus, not generally. So much of your damage is dependent on your attacks connecting that you don't want to risk them missing due to the to-hit penalty from Power Attack.

It's not a bad toy to have when you don't want to use spells/are out of resources, but it's probably not worth building for specifically if you didn't have any other reason to have 13 Str.

How big a deal are class names?Another player wants to roll up a ninja because he thinks they seem better at getting into places and at combat. The GM is getting hung up on the name and doesn't seem to buy into the idea of refluffing.

Query:

Are Rubatos bound by the same animus spending limitations as Mystics, even though they're using tempo?

I just think that if so, it needs to be clearly said, or maybe I'm misreading it somehow.

But it's extremely fun to send grown elves screaming down hallways pissing their pants, though. It causes a nice chain reaction too, because the ones NOT feared get freaked out, and then all they see is some shirtless asshole standing in the middle of the hall by himself. Next thing they know their friends are bleeding out their eyes and attacking eachother, and their bones feel extremely fragile.

Unnatural lust is reserved for bar-hopping mischief, though. I don't think that kitsune needs to use magic to get any on his own, though. Fluffy tails was definitely the GM's fetish

>>
>>46128768
What's his concept?

Honestly, a ninja is just a rogue that draws on their internal mastery to be better at physical infiltration/combat rather than flexibility/social infiltration.
>>
>>46128768
Give him an Unchained Rogue and point him at the Ninja Trick rogue talent. He'll be better for it.

>>46128807
I would never dump it, but some people suggest it. I only play Str-based Magi, because I fucking HATE that stupid copy-paste Dervish Dance Scimitar bullshit. Literally 99% of all Magi have the same traits, feats and spells known.
>>
>>46128833

Anon, he's saying he's getting hung up on the origins of the class more than what you can do with it.

It's like not really getting turned on with Barbarian (Armored Hulk) because it implies you're a hooting savage in pilfered armor, when it works better as an elite shock trooper in a king's army that's able to enter a martial trance.

It's why so many people get hung up with the Warder and Zweihander Sentinel, because they can't really "get" what the class is about from the name.
>>
>>46128853
Unchained Rogues can't get master tricks.
>>
>>46128864
Reach Magus best Magus When it's a trip Magus with a whip
>>
>>46128768
Not as big a deal as players make them out to be.

An example is the Swashbuckler. There are a few better ways to make a swashbuckler character than using the Swashbuckler class.

I'm including the statement "Don't get hung up on using the name of the class to create your character" in my house rules.
>>
>>46128786
They're bound by the same limits in Flux that Mystics are, yes; any limits built into feats, items, the like, also apply. Using their tempo for/with performances and recovery has its own limits already spelled out.
>>
>>46128880
But isn't Warder and ZweiSent pretty straightforward.

I know, that's why I was cutting it down to it's core.

Any street thief in an alley can push on their internal reserves and will to survive in order to pull off the impossible. We see it all the time. While the term is 'ninja', that doesn't mean you have to be an Eastern clan descendant bushido hokage whatever

ONLY SAMURAI CAN BE NOBLE FEUDAL LAND OWNERS IN NOTJAPAN

ONLY ROGUES CAN APPLY ROUGE
>>
>>46128925
ZweiSent for me is, but in some games wards are protection magics so warder may be a ward caster or something like that.
>>
>>46128925
Not everyone knows what a Zweihander is, and not everyone uses it on their character.
>>
>>46128880
People do what about the Warder? What nonsense is this?

A Warder is somebody who protects his wards. A Sentinel is someone who watches over things/an area/etc. Shit is pretty straightforward.

>>46128912
Thank you for being the 1% of Magi players who at least TRY to do something different and interesting.

>>46128949
Anybody who bans classes like the Ninja and Samurai because of the names is an asshole and an idiot. THEY'RE NOT EVEN GOOD! BAN STUFF THAT ACTUALLY CAUSES PROBLEMS!
>>
>>46128987

>>
>>46128925
>>46128982
>>46128986
>>46128987

Not to mention most people who "get" the Warder/Sentinel part fail to realize the classes are far more effective as untouchable killing machines than immobile tanks.
>>
>>46128833
Near as I can tell, his concept appears to be the mutant bastard offspring of Snake, Sam Fisher, and Agent 47 rather than some Naruto bullshit. He's really really good at getting into places, either through sneaking around/over things, or walking in through the front door in a disguise, and is trying to be good at killing shit as well. The character is pretty solid in my opinion (really all he lacks is trapfinding) but the GM just keeps reiterating that it isn't an eastern game.

Tell him he's being an idiot. Even the Paizo devs directly encourage reusing classes for different mechanics. Look at the archeologist bard archetype, which doesn't actually do any "bard" things at all, just reuses the same mechanics structure.

>>
>>46129034
Yeah, pretty much. My group's folks that are low-op in, like, the least aggressive way possible. They're new, so when they talk about a concept I tend to guide them towards something that does it competently.

I /could/ let 'em roll a monk and then adjust my encounters down to compensate, but I like running tactically interesting encounters. Splitting the difference keeps both sides happy.
>>
>>46129027
I don't know what you can do besides send your GM pictures of Western special forces doing infiltration work and remind him that the name of the class is not what that class does.

"When the wealthy and the powerful need an enemy eliminated quietly and without fail, they call upon the ninja. When a general needs to sabotage the siege engines of his foes before they can reach the castle walls, he calls upon the ninja. And when fools dare to move against a ninja or her companions, they will find the ninja waiting for them while they sleep, ready to strike. These shadowy killers are masters of infiltration, sabotage, and assassination, using a wide variety of weapons, practiced skills, and mystical powers to achieve their goals."

I do not see a single reference to Eastern stuff, or katanas or monastery clans or anything.
>>
>>46129087
Because they also get Martial Weapons
>>
I've recently been invited by a friend to an ongoing game

Everyone's only level 1 so far, but the party consists of a chained monk, a chained barbarian, a chained rogue and a cleric

What the fuck do I do? I don't want to rock the boat tier-wise but it's looking pretty rocked already
>>
>>46129130
Alchemist or Magus. Mid-tier arcane(ish) is the area you're missing. That party composition can work as long as the low tiers aren't stupid and the cleric isn't deliberately trying to break the game.
>>
>>46129023
At what point did anybody say the ZS couldn't be both mobile AND protect his buddies?

>>46129074
>Slayer
>PoW
Additionally, the reason we do that is because PoW is straight up the answer to 99% of "I want to be a good martial class who does X".

>>46129087
Can't Spell Combat with a 2H weapon (or was it Spellstrike? I always get the two confused.)

>>46129104
Slayer outfights him by a shitton, and there's even an archetype that gets Invisibility use AND can use wands without making UMD checks, iirc.

>>46129130
When in doubt, Alchemist.
>>
>>46129161
Spellstrike is the actual 'hit with magic and weapon' thing. Spell Combat is the 'cast as part of full attack'
