I'm making a Vengeance paladin multiclass that aims to get critical hits as frequently as possible. I know it isn't necessarily optimal, but my party like my previous paladin's crit-smites and I want to further build around nuking my foes. I'm not making a build that goes to level 20, since we never really play to it. Let's stick to level 12 max, help me please distill this build down into one that gets crits as frequently as possible.

So far I've got variant human Champion fighter 3 for improved crit, Assassin 3 for surprise crit and advantage, and paladin 4 for a total of 10 levels. Going barbarian wouldn't make too much sense for the theme of the character and I don't really feel like risking giving the enemy advantage against me.

My chosen feats so far are Lucky and Great Weapon Master.

Any changes or additions to the build to make it even better?

Combat balance is fine. Martials deal single-target damage in good to great amounts, casters do control shit and AoE damage in bursts.

Utility-wise, casters win hands-down.

Having played through a campaign from level 1 to 15 as a wizard, I still felt like the most powerful member of the party (consisting of a ranger, warlock and druid), but it was definitely not as wide a gap as it was in some other editions. Martial damage is off the charts. Only twinky cheese builds can let a caster match (or momentarily edge out if they're burning their 9th and 8th slots) the single target DPS of a battlemaster or champion fighter. Open Hand Monks get the only save-or-die in the game and colossal damage even if they make the save.

This edition is basically the most balanced DnD has ever been as far as I can tell. Materials and casters can roughly pump out the same amount of damage in a day if you build then right, with the main separating factor between martials and casters being tankiness vs utility. Casters are far from being underpowered still but they are on much more level playing field with martial classes.

Spells are MUCH more versatile than what non-casters get for utility options and martials have a much smaller list of fancy tricks they can pull off in 5e.

In 4e on the other hand a Monk could go full Jackie Chan in combat and get enemies hitting their own allies. Fighters had a regeneration (If they were conscious and under half HP) ability to represent being completely unwilling to back down and keep going despite the beating they'd taken. Rogues could blind people or Fence them across the room, using clever footwork to reposition them easily.

While on the other hand, out of combat for both spellcasters and non-spellcasters was 90% in the area of Skills, rather than Spells.

Doing a big Druidic Ritual? That was the Nature skill. Focusing to detect magic? Anyone with Arcana training could do that even if they couldn't cast spells.

One of my biggest annoyances was how they gutted rituals. In 4e Rituals were something that anyone could do any of them, as long as they had the associated skill and training. 5e made them more 'The wizard gets his utility spells without spending a slot if he's got time'.

Dex/Cha rogues were more 'Swashbuckling fencers' than they were backstabbers in 4e a lot of the time. Though you could happily make them either.

They got a heap of Riposte and Repositioning tricks. Dex/Str just beat you to death in an alleyway and Dex/Int cried because it got almost no support before Essentials but was supposed to be more of a skirmisher vanishing in and out of shadows.

I want to make a Bladelock, because the concept is cool. But I don't want to suck, because the rules are subpar. How would you guys do it, starting from level 7? I'm leaning towards Fighter 2 / Warlock 5. Then put the next level into Fighter 3 for Battlemaster, and after that just Warlock it up. Fighter first to get armour proficiencies, Second Wind and Action Surge. Warlock 5 to get the pact stuff and Thirsting Blade. Then a third level of Fighter for Battlemaster stuff (more extra damage, handy manoeuvres).

Sounds solid to me, but I would suggest, if the game gets far enough, dipping one more level in fighter for the 4th lvl feat. You can postpone that for as far back as your 20th lvl but if you get that far or whatever you should do it.

4e suffered very poorly from bad PR. The initial look people got at it gave a lot of people the idea that classes were samey because they had standardized how abilities were laid out and it took a bit to realize the differences.

I won't say it wasn't a dramatic shift from 3.5 (Oh lord it was) but I still consider it a very fun game as long as you go into it remembering that it's trying to emulate the D&D Novels and swashbuckling/high fantasy movies more than 'This is exactly how the world works' or '4 unfortunate shitheads who'll easily be replaced by 4 more unfortunate shitheads when they all fall down a pit and die'

So fellow fa/tg/uys my new party has a huge session today (13-14 hours) and just hit level 4.
We have a huge mix of fuckery for our party, main people who are always here are a drawf cleric (bro tier guy) a great weapon master paladin, a tiefling sorcerer who loves playing pranks with a high charisma, a halfling rogue with a huge drinking problem (most of us drink but he's shitfaced 24/7 and still functions) and lastly is my character, a high elf fighter/bard.
How fucked are we?

My GM lets players frame scenes, like going to an NPC to talk to them and basically exploring their character or the world. The default way of acting by your flaw/bond etc is clever to get murderhobos and new players to RP but for more experienced groups it seems a bit unnecessary. Like in Dungeon World where you get exp for acting according to your alignment, it's cool at first but then becomes slightly annoying with arguing and some being easier to do than others, etc.

I myself like the variant rule that players reward inspiration, means the GM doesn't have as much to keep track of and lets them decide how Inspiration should be rewarded.

Its a max group of about 7 dudes who get along really well, 2 of our players are experienced DMs so they help out alot with map making and note taking.
Our last session went from 11am to 4am, not only did we level up 2 times (from 2-3 and 3-4) we got a bunch of cool items and are currently pretty rich off the loot.
Our activity list from that session include storming a castle and taking it, cleaning out an old village of monsters that were causing hell on the nearby village, and killed a slightly grown dragon. Including alot of other small things here and there that I left out but effectively we get shit done and it's hilarious how it happens.

Booming Blade would be your best bet. Spiritual Weapon, while not technically melee, does help for giving you a bit more DPS punch at a low spell slot cost too, especially if you're not doing much else with your bonus action.

The lesson was learned from that day forward, when the Elf has a plan listen up.
TLDR we stacked up innahallway with a dead body held infront of my pc, the polearm guy sees someones shadow past the doorway and rushes in, he got smacked pretty hard and went unconscious. After that we blitzkrieg'd in like a SWAT team from the 90s and killed everything.

You have less than 1% chance to crit higher than if you went paladin 5. If you went pal 7 champ 3 you would have much better crits, you are missing out on extra attack for the build right now, and you don't even have spells above first level to smite with.

You forgot the cardinal rule of multiclassing here, make sure you get second attack. Go paladin 5 (at LEAST) then start multiclassing into whatever retarded thing you want. You have less combat viability than someone half your level as is. There aren't many ways to gimp your char in 5e, but by god you are trying.

Hey guys. I got a player who really wants to be a yuan-ti. No problem. As an exercise I decided to make up the race using the DMG guidelines. I'm stuck on one part though and need the advice of more experienced players.

(I chose to model the pureblood, btw, for obvious reasons.)

I am mimicking Dwarven Resilience with Serpentine Resilience, giving them advantage on poison saves and resistance to poison damage. Totally fits the yuan-ti.

But on spells, I'm concerned about balancing power with the added resilience. (The DMG said as much when they made aasimars.)

What I have now is: "You can cast animal friendship as an at-will spell, but only against snakes. At 3rd level you learn the poison spray cantrip if you didn't already know it. At 5th level you can cast suggestion once using this trait and you regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest."

Animal friendship (snakes) is an at-will spell and the other two spells are 3/day spells for purebloods in the MM
.
I also gave them Common, Draconic and Abyssal.

Thoughts?

inb4 use green dragonborn. I want the yuan-ti pureblood to be a natural warlock or social rogue, like the tiefling, as befits their race's goals.

You could also maybe make Poison Spray a 3/day or 2/day, but I would recommend giving them a 1st level spell instead, Ray of Sickness 1/day perhaps? I give this suggestion because I'm looking at the Tiefling's racial spells. Start with a Cantrip, learn a 1st level spell at 3 (though it's cast as a 2nd), and learn a 2nd level spell at 5.

I like it, but sneak attack with unarmed might be a bit much, if only because I remember a Monk/Rogue being quite effective with his sneak attacks since the DM allowed, by default, him to get sneak attack from unarmed strike.

Dirty Fighting incentivizes you to take Grappler and try to grapple more frequently, so it might get some use, but grappling isn't normally as effective as flat attacking in my experience. Maybe this would change, but I dunno.

Look Behind You is pretty great, especially in a fluff sense, but I think there should be a qualifier at the end like "if the target is immune to being charmed (or some other type of DM discretion is advised if it doesn't make sense for the target to get distracted, like an automata of some kind), the ability fails".

Sand In Your Eye is fun, and sounds like a grand old time. Would help other martials immensely to blind the target first and then they go in and start swinging. Hit Them While They're Down initially seems overpowered, but they get it at 17, so I'm mostly fine with it.

It seems pretty decently done.

I tell them the important parts and how to use the item, and pass them an index card with the item's name and DMG description on it in case they need to reference it. 3.5" x 5" index cards are standard MtG sized cards when you cut them in half, so you can even put it in a card sleeve so they can track charges with a dry erase marker and pips.

Poison Spray is a good cantrip, but the other racial cantrip is Thaumaturgy. I figure the cantrip should always be something like that; not something that you would use to cause damage, but something that would have some utility use.

If you wanted to, you could consider Animal Friendship (snakes) as the race's cantrip. It only works on snakes, after all, so it's a very specific version of the Animal Friendship spell. You have it as an at-will, which fits cantrip anyway.

It is a sub-race though, so maybe include a Yuan-ti subrace that gives them Poison Spray? The majority of my critique of the Yuan-ti race suggested comes from comparing it to the Tiefling and the Dark Elf, which are the only races I can think of that get racial spellcasting progression like how he wants, so I kind of ignored looking through the other races and seeing if they get cantrips.

Yeah, it's meant to be so that if someone really wants to go grappler they can, should be situational but not too powerful if they don't. Still not sure if STR as a primary + expertise + sneak attacks on grappled targets will be a recipe for an overpowered mess.

Capstones are really hard to do, on the one hand almost no one gets to see them in practice, but on the other hand but you want to make them enticing. It's like a carrot on a stick, "if I did get to high levels on this, would I feel like a badass." Thieves get two turns on the first round of combat, assassins get a chance to double their damage against surprised enemies (who they already auto-crit).

It wouldn't until the guy took the Grappler feat. Even then, that bit comes down to "I can almost certainly take one guy out of the fight. Can you guys handle the rest?" I think it would be pretty good for a capture style, but, again, not many people I've played with have tried to go full grappler.

How about an intelligence score? If it's below 6 or 4 or something, it fails? I mean, everyone humanoid would probably understand what someone looking slightly behind them, eyes widening in terror, and pointing while stammering means, regardless of language.

Spells aren't static at all, you just need to cast them with higher level slots and they grow significantly. It's just not free anymore. Cantrips scale with character level increasing numbers of damage dice at about the same rate martials get multiple attacks.

There isn't a load of room for new classes really. I mean thematically, it's hard to think of any strong fantasy archetype that isn't already represented.

But subclasses there's loads of room for. They're also the only additional player content that's gotten official releases, other than races and spells. You would presumably need to be trained by a Paladin or order of Paladins to become one, especially since the Oath isn't something you can just swear upon. Levels 1-3 of Paladin are literal training to take the Oath. You can't just take up a sword, do some reading, and bam, you're a Paladin. It's much the same for most other classes, I would imagine.

You might be right. I really like the trappings of 5E, the advantage/disadvantage core mechanic and the way the whole game just feels fast. The rules aren't bloated and complicated like 3.PF, they're actually FUN (to me at least).

But the classes just aren't appealing and that kills a huge part of what makes an RPG fun for me and my players. It's already hard enough to drag them away from Pathfinder; guess we'll be playing a lot more FFG SW.

My problem with 5E classes is most of the abilities aren't that useful outside of specific circumstances and there just isn't enough to go around. There's too much "roll to attack roll to attack roll to attack."

Also in my experience players really like the sense of ownership that comes with customizing their character's actual gameplay. They don't like knowing their character plays identically to everyone else, even if there are no similar characters in the party. That's one thing FFG SW does really well, lot's of choice for how to make your character.

They're the general pretty greedy kinda folk (a Tiefling that can't resist the urge to con, a half-elf that got cursed after stealing an emerald from a drow palace), and my guy is this cooperative druid man, who just wants to help and learn, man.

It's very much inspired by 5e (uses banes/boons, which are like advantage/disad, but not qutie) and I really like its class setup, it's sort of like Warhammer 2e. You pick a 'base' class and then essentially you stamp on 2 other classes to your level progression, in a manner similar to archetypes but they can be 100% unrelated to your base class. Warrior base? Sure, grab the Warlock 'expert', etc.

Alternatively, yeah, find something classless. I don't really like classes, myself. Too restrictive, end up with all this weird shit to get what you want or you just have to deal with it.

That does not do the same thing as sunlight. It would just turn him into Mist after which he would go back into his coffin and start healing again.

Anyway You need to stake him while he is in his coffin as well. In order to get him into his coffin you have to reduce him to 0 hp. Which is going to be hard as the guy with one exception is only met while he is ambushing the party. (Were he is pretty much sure to get surprise as they need passive perception of 19 to see him coming.)

A scourge enchanted with constant poison could be cool. They're made to cut and bleed, so I could imagine one slicing at swaths of troops, then the fast-acting poison finishing even the hardiest.

An arbalest that fires superheated bolts would penetrate armor like it's nothing and could strike from great distance. Slow, but scary.

The magic items don't have to be weapons directly, just help in killing specifically humans. The tentacled horrors bred horrible monsters to kill their human slaves who had revolted against their ownership. The tentacled horrors decided to kill them off rather than try to reconquer them, and then begin again. They had time.

Turns out, though, that they lost the war and were imprisoned; these magic items were then buried where it was hoped no one would ever find them.

The intention is to make these magic items as creepy as possible, so the players will hesitate to use them, as I enjoy torturing my players.

They already have one item that makes the wielder want to eat humans.

I feel like you'll want to prey on the human condition, then.

An orb of desire. It does some sort of damage, probably necrotic or psychic in a relatively small area around it. In a larger area, humans are required to make a saving throw to resist being the orb's illusions. You can fluff the illusions however you like for your characters. They could see their long-dead master, a pile of gold, the lusty barmaid from the last town, etc. Give it some condition such as "only works on humanoids" and you're good to go. Those of weak will will walk to their slow and painful demise.

Staff of negative energy. Plant this in the ground and activate it. It drains away all life (starting with simple things like plants and bugs) in a very large (several km) area around it. It will wilt the crops and drive nearby towns to rioting, chaos, starvation, and death.

Sword of killing abberations. Very powerful magical sword. Makes every non-abberation look like an abberation.

I looked at Adventure League, and while I agree with some of the ideas, its a lot of paperwork, and extra restrictions for my group to sit down and play.

Factions don't work (Period, they just add an extra layer most players don't want) and even if they did, running Adventure League in Barovia traps your players, where they will die.

You also cannot gain renown or interact with Factions while in Barovia either, so it seems that Adventure League characters go there to die.

Well it's in the DM pdf from the AL. You become undead and evil when detected by Detect Evil & Good or whatever spell. Technically you are undead and cursed but it's temporary. There's an NPC the pdf points out to get that taken care of.
