The required intelligence is not well established. The Prometheans seem to have done a good job, and the TITANs might have as well if they had a little forewarning.

So how the hell do I introduce a new group to Eclipse Phase? They mostly played fantasy games like DND. Seems like there is so much information you need to absorb to even be functional in the setting.

Yeah, the Futurama move seems to be ideal. That, or have them play a "Fall escape" type scenario as kind of a rough run-up to the full blown Post-Fall setting.
>>

Fall escapes are kind of overdone, the Futurama open is more fun

You may or may not want to rely on Muses. Each character might have a muse (or been assigned one); having a secretary/helper character lets you subtly or not so subtly intervene when the players seem to be totally confused. Some players resent that sort of thing, though - so it's a judgement call.

But ultimately it depends on what you and your players want out of RPGs in general, and this game in particular. Players who want to be a criminal syndicate are different from those who want to save the system are different from those who want to discover the hidden truths behind everything.

Custom morphs, /tg/, using the Transhuman rules? Anything interesting you've built?

I've only come up with two that have seen any use in our games. The Einherjar is exclusively in use by pre-fall egos who have their original bodies, because it is their original body. Few aptitude boosts, and implants, but stat limits comparable to the remade and tough as hell. The rationale was that they were the rich/lucky girding themselves against the future. They worked as an effective 'oh SHIT' button for us, because identifying the gene-sequences of one meant we were probably in trouble.

The other was the Crow. Think a reaper crossed with a neoavian, but instead of point blank annihilation, it did infowar. It got launched across space, disguised as space junk, to infiltrate a jovian habitat. Crashed into the Jupiter outer atmosphere, woke up, activated its plasma sail and internal rocket and went straight for the local habitats. Hilarious!
>>
>>46086587

I've smashed together a few, and saved the stats on some more ideas from /epg/ threads.

Personally, I tend to base custom morph ideas on simple design plans which aren't outright met by the extant morphs (which leaves only a few gaps) and so far none have had any proper play in games I've run.

Default was just a large sized base dur 150 morph with basic biomods/mesh inserts, all the 'quality of life' materials and a few 'just in case' ones, like an emergency farcaster, high-g augmentation and aptitude maximums of 40.

The dread came mostly from the fact that sighting one meant you had someone between 80-150 on your tail. Which meant those maximums were being used, the attached skills would be colossal.

And that you'd somehow missed something sized 'large' sniffing around looking for what you were looking for.

So, say I make a Mercurial neo-octopus uplift with the following Traits:
Positive: Predator, Killing Instinct, Hardened (Solitude)
Negative: Mental Disorder (Autophagy), Solitary, Real-World Naivete
Would my theoretical murder-octo be accepted into Firewall as a sentinel, and just how much would he skeeve out everyone around him? Is this a playable concept, or should I try for something else?
>>
>>46087472
He probably would be pretty freaky, but lets be real, most neo-octopodes are kinda freaky. People will probably work with him, but might keep one eye open.
>>
>>46086587
I actually came up with a synthmorph a while back to throw at my players/have available as something they could. It was a pre-fall combat synthmorph, a cross between a fury, a daitya, reaper, and remade. Basically a tank, but smushed into a human sized (see almost eight foot tall) frame.

I'm thinking of running a campaign where the players take on the roles of semi-independent detectives in the NQPD. Does anyone have ideas for a police procedural kind of EP game? I'm having a little bit of trouble thinking what police work would be in the EP world, like how homicide investigations work, or what kinds of crimes really warrant police crackdowns. I'm thinking small time (or occasionally big time) indenture abuse, or ego-theft would be some big ones. Corporate espionage seems like another, with the NQPD caught between rival hypercorps. Potentially dangerous subcultures like cults or other kind of underground things seem like an option as well.

What makes more some good GiTS-y episodic things to have happen in EP?

>>46087547
I did something kind of similar, but it was basically just some superheavy infantry stuff, which was originally made for AI pilots. I don't remember where I have the rule for it though.

A secretly exhuman serial murderer? Goes about his daily life as a run of the mill splicer or exalt, but switches into some kind of monstrous combat/stealth morph at night to hunt people caught out on the streets?

For fuck's sake, why? The whole point of FATE is to spend fewer pages on skill bloat and more on shit that moves the plot forward. This is the problem everyone had with all the playtest additions, they got so fucking bogged down in pointless minutia and played against every strength the system had, why didn't they fix it?

The idea that players should have an active hand in making their server/cell really isn't in EP, and it's a pretty good idea.

You shouldn't roll for them, but bringing those elements to the front of the game, making them points of discussion and creation for the group is important.

If the players want to have any say in their server, they got to talk to their proxy handler. >>
>>46104171
>ULTIMATE KILLBOT CHALLENGE!!!
I'm the guy who wrote it as a spitball, so I'll do my best to rewrite it in case no one finds it. Once every six months, in a secret, heavily-reinforced beehive habitat in the Main Belt, the ULTIMATE KILLBOT CHALLENGE!!! is held. Anyone can enter, but the rules are simple.
1. The killbot you enter into the challenge has to be designed by you or your group. You also need to supply the ego that will run it. Rumors that certain Firewall servers use the Challenge to design, show off, and acquire shells and egos for erasure squads will be flatly denied. Note that there's heavy competition both to design the most deadly shell and put the most insane, murderous ego inside it.
2. All bots are released into the habitat at the same time. No instructions from outside handlers are permitted. Live video is recorded from the habitat mesh and released to anyone who pays the subscription fee, after editing for length and usability.
3. After the Rajput incident, masked synths are not permitted.
4. Last bot standing wins.
5. If no one managed to put a hole in the hab during the course of the Challenge, the audience will be very disappointed. Fortunately, this is only rarely a problem.
Common sources for competitors include Direct Action, Scum, Extropians, and various other groups from across the solar system.
>>
>>46104408
Thanks, that's great. I'm using it in my campaign, except this thing will be set in the Rings.
>>
>>46104505
It's in the belt so that everyone can participate. It sounds like it's Extropian, at least on the outside. The fact that you have participants from both the PC and the AA is telling.
>>
>>46104617
Well, I think the Belt is too much of a trade-route-crossroads thing - there's too many ways to breach the secrecy, even by accident.
>>
>>46104684
Do you know how big the Belt is?
>>
>>46104708
What, are you trying to insult me? To tell me how to run my game in my variation of setting? Are you?
>>
>>46104617
>>46104505
The actual physical location doesn't matter -too- much, since the intent behind the secrecy is mostly to keep anyone from interfering with the show and to add mystique. The participant shells can be delivered or nanofabbed on-site, and the egos can be egocasted, naturally. The important questions, plotwise, are 'Who is really running the place and why', 'Oh shit, we're in cases in the middle of the Challenge, how and why did this happen', and similar issues.
>>46104708
>>46104750
Hey, you two, relax, no need to fight over this.
>>
>>46104750
I'm telling you you're a moron who doesn't understand how big the Belt is.
>>
>>46101942
Does anyone actually use the term that way?
>>
>>46104908
Yes, it's a common way to describe how a lot of early roleplaying games like Basic and OD&D handled things that weren't in the rules (which was almost everything)
>>
>>46105028

>>
>>46105028
>Yes, it's a common way to describe how a lot of early roleplaying games like Basic and OD&D handled things that weren't in the rules (which was almost everything)
And back in those days, DM fiat was seen as a good thing, since it kept the game moving and functional, let you do neat things that weren't within the rules, and generally were less lethal than the actual rules, unless you were playing under Psycho Dave, in which case you had bigger problems anyway.
>>46105072
Would you believe 2e and OD&D had basically zero rules for social interaction beyond basic guidelines for disposition and such?

IIRC the Consortium tried using traditional warships and mercenary forces and were rebuffed by the same (the combined forces of Anarchs, Jovians, and Titanians were simply larger). The link is talking about accelerating large bodies with technology that is within all the major powers in Eclipse Phase. Just stick some fusion engines on some asteroids and let them rip. Apply soot for low albedo and they become much harder to detect.

This also shows that as written the TITANS had no interest in actually wiping out humanity as it would have been trivial for them to use the gates to hop on over to Eris and then start accelerating large bodies back towards the inner system.
>>
>>46105918
I also really hate how there are the TITANS (AI Cthulhu) and Titanians (Space Euros). Keep your names distinct god damnit.
>>
>>46105959
I'm sure they came up with TITANS during the very earliest conceptualization stages, and only realized much later that there is a large and extremely relevant celestial body in our system with the same name.
>>
>>46105918
Basically, the PC wanted to take and keep Locus using conventional warfare and the anarchists weren't reduced to needing to stoop to 'blow it all up with bombs and disassemblers and suicide forks'. And yes, it's been argued fairly successfully that it'd be easier and cheaper to just blow up every anarchist hab rather than try to take any of them. The PC would rather not deal with the press that involves, though. At least for now.
>>
>>46105984
At least give the Titanians a different name then. The Saturn Alliance or some bullshit Scandi name would do.

With everyone building new habitats all the time and moving asteroids closer to the inner system for mining and the like you can disguise your movements with even the barest subterfuge.
>>
>>46106313
You really can't. You would need preposterously high thrust for a last-second diversion.
>>
>>46106368
You don't do a last-second diversion. You just have nonfunctional retrograde propulsion on the front. This will totally cut on to slow it down for mining, really!

This is if you even care about misleading them. You can just have automated drones keep flying around and building more engines on more asteroids and just keep sending them at the target.
>>
>>46106464
This will work great if your target is run by elementary schoolers with learning disabilities.

Here in the real world trajectories that will intersect important things in the event of a propulsion failure aren't done, and doing them will be considered an act of war.

>You can just have automated drones keep flying around and building more engines on more asteroids and just keep sending them at the target.

And your opponent can just keep scrapping them in the tremendously long acceleration phase.

You'll also need to worry about whether they have their own asteroids set up to hit you. Even if they can't stop you, MAD is still a threat as long as they can see what you're doing.

Riddle me this, /epg/. Doing the math on the bot ramming rules, a basic Saucer impact at top speed does (1d10+2)x20 damage to whatever it hits, or an average DV of roughly 150, minus armor, for the cost of [Low] per bot. I feel like I should reread the rules, because now I can't help but imagine this is too OP to be real, even counting the 1d10 Stress per drone death (Which can be shoved off onto a suicide fork). Neofish

The genetics of the Neofish derive mostly from elephantfish (mormyrid) stock, with notable inclusions from lungfish and salmon to allow limiter airbreathing and life in both fresh and salt water. The elephantfish was selected for its very high encephalization quotient, acute sense of smell, and electrosensory system. These senses fill a notable gap in those of cetaceans, making the neofish valuable in some niche applications. They also have impressively large brain cavities, which many egos find advantageous.

Neofish are totally incapable of speech without additional augmentation.

The elephant fish proboscis has had some dexterity added, allowing the operation of certain devices, but is not suitable for gripping objects.

Implants: basic biomods, basic mesh inserts, cortical stack, enhanced smell, swim bladder, electrical sense (bioware), direction sense, eelware, gills, lateral line

Literally everyone who wears clothes should have a smartfabric light vacsuit for [Moderate] and wear it regularly. If you can't afford one, you should probably just embrace your inner peasant and go around in a barrel carrying a lantern. Because that vacsuit will become whatever clothes you want and will probably save your life in case of toxic atmosphere or hull breach.

You know a [Moderate] cost is actually like, a monthly living expense cost for quite a lot of people, right?

>Apply soot for low albedo and they become much harder to detect.

Of all the wrong things said in this general, this might very well be the wrongest. Anyone with enhanced vision would be able to see the fusion engines ignite from anywhere in the solar system. Applying soot to the asteroids is like trying to put camouflage paint on an exploding bomb.

Assuming EP optics are as good as the rest of the stuff they have, those asteroids aren't even a huge threat; they can be deflected by laser fire, while habs in the target zone make evasive action.

>>46106313
Typically those aren't going to be pointed at habs, and with your 3 month long injection burns to put them in a remotely threatening orbit there's plenty of time take countermeasures.

First rule of Nine Lives: You do not talk about Nine Lives.
>>
Speaking of edited memories, how do you use them in a fun but not too obstructing way?

I, for one, make references to things that "happened" (they didn't) during actual game time in place where the PCs were, or even things they "did" (they did not).

Or vice versa, when they reference some thing that happened in the past, I say "what thing? It never happened."

Or even use this stuff to confuse the fuck out of them, like when they try to use an object present in the room which I included in my description, the object isn't there.

Or the time suddenly shifts some hours forward.

Keeps them on their toes all the time, as long as I don't say "you don't remember", it seems to kill the whole point.
>>
>>46122113
Don't be a dick about realistically, if it happens it will happen in a situation where the characters realize it may have happened. Infomorph may be an exception, but even then there should be time loss.

I may have oversimplified the whole thing, but yes, the characters will have all the means to realize that it happened (or didn't), and their memories were tampered with. But the surprise and the following paranoia about memory integrity makes a very nice addition to the mood, I think.

they also might advertise that they are an uplift on their mesh profiles. If they're trying to hide it, a brainprint scan will reveal it.

>>
>>46124571
>>46124637
Well like I said passed out in the entry at last second, and who knows.

We got 30 MRE each and 3/4 of us are in Theseus morphs. Right after crash landing from the meteor we were onset by 2 spy drones and armored anti-infantry vehicles in search and destroy patrols towards where it spotted us.

We lost them by 6 back to back rolls of running around dunes escaping line of sight until they got confused and we ran the fuck off. This was 6 turns of a person infiltrating to the top of a dune, navigation rolling us around the dunes to a more stealthy path out of line of sight, and then all of the party making freerunning rolls. And we did this with only two moxy, and one guy completely out of his moxy from piloting us to the surface.

The current plan is to find a vehicle. I don't know how we're still alive, we almost died 9 times on the way down to the surface and escaping the drones. But we always rolled a crit success on the "save or die" roll that came up.
>>
>>46124926

Get a behavioral/psych analysis AI/software. Throw them in a simulspace server and dial up time acceleration as high as that baby will go.

BTW, a properly made Kinesics check can totally ID an uplift just from mannerisms, so if you failed that skill check on something mission important that is your own problem.
>>
>>46124987
Oh and to add to this most the party's free running is 36. Only two of us had played this system before and the rest didn't provide any suggestions on what kind of things are useful to invest points in besides "GUNS AND FRAY"

There's a 8-page-long chapter in Transhuman - a de facto player's guide - on how to generate a good character. Didn't you read it?
>>
>>46125316
I never saw that, I mostly started at page 1 and was reading through the universe lore and didn't get through the whole book before game day showed up and sat around with everyone else working on the characters with the same methods they wanted to use for chargen.
>>
>>46125361
Well, read it now. You're going to die pretty soon, so get some skillsofts when you resleeve.
>>
>>46125413
>so get some skillsofts when you resleeve.
I already did, that's why I was somehow able to pass my freerunning checks and we all didn't die.
>>
>>46125447
Well, get some more. And I'd recommend using the space elevator next time you need to get to Earth. Pack up some portable planes (if you are going to Earth, you can very well get some for its conditions), and fly where you need. They are rather costly, but worth it.

And can you please elaborate what the fuck you needed on Earth?
>>
>>46125447
That said thanks I will check out that guide though I only have one or two sessions left in this campaign before the GM likes to switch out systems every game.
>>
>>46125602
Why don't you try GMing it yourself? It's fun to GM this - the average person is at least as smart as any modern person, and have roughly the same capabilities as a PC, and death is temporary, so you can go all out and don't pull any punches like you would in D&D.
>>
>>46125569
>And I'd recommend using the space elevator next time you need to get to Earth.
We almost did but the DM made it sound like the elevator was going to be a bad time. It was the 'medium risk' option because records showed potentially lot of shit at the base of the elevator.

>And can you please elaborate what the fuck you needed on Earth?

None of us are even completely sure. We had some organization trying to brain wash people to their cause, and made everyone want to go to earth. We went to one of the facilities, which was then some super psyker that we couldn't kill and wanted to blow up the blockade on Earth. Firewall then contacts us and says "okay you're going to Earth." And some vague shit about there being a facility planetside they want us to investigate related to this. We had the option to say no, but then that would have just been campaign over and none of us know what the fuck is going on.
>>
>>46125803
I prefer to play myself, but maybe sometime in the future. For the immediate time GM wants to run a 40k game next which I am quite interested in giving a try just because I do enjoy 40k even if the system may or may not be as good as EP.
>>
>>46125855
You don't get to the base. You get off in the upper atmosphere and glide on planes wherever you need.

I'm pretty sure you are dealing with exsurgents. And if you do, going in without good intelligence which you should have, you're Firewall, and a plan is signing your own death warrant.

>>46125916
40K RPGs are pretty much the same level with EP - it's a matter of taste. Caster supremacy is still a thing.
>>
>>46125855
Reread the handout, we're heading down to find out what the fuck nefarious things they had plotted to try and leave earth, if we hadn't stopped them breaking the cordon. We gotta find out what they have there so we can be better prepared to stop it ever happening again. Then far cast out and hit the area with rods from god

>>46126016
We are very much dealing with exsurgents
>>
>>46124161
>Everyone forgot gocycles and we got a thousand miles to cover.

That's the kind of thing the GM should just let you moxie. It's realistically something your characters would have remembered and nobody wants the campaign to take ten times as long to get anywhere interesting because you had to travel on foot
>>
>>46126016
>You don't get to the base. You get off in the upper atmosphere and glide on planes wherever you need.
I see, we'll maybe give that a try next if/when it comes to it.

Yeah they are exsurgents. There's just not much intel available and lots of bad decisions, a few good ones, and a lot of luck.
At the end of the session the GM said god himself had to be intent on keeping us alive because of how many times he thought it was finally going to be the roll that killed us.

Party of the reason for my problems is I'm the party's hacker and so I didn't really think I'd be on the front line as much as this.

>>46126016
I see, I still couldn't make up my mind on what to play for that campaign when it comes. That Psyker "YOU DIED" roll was a little worrying but I noticed you can negate it to some degree but there's only so many other options to play as.
>>
>>46126349
>I'm the party's hacker
Oh, then you absolutely must read Transhuman. Its section on hacking tips is great.
>>
>>46126469
Awesome will do. Though there will probably be little hacking left in the game, I will give it a read just in case there is.
