Every summer I run a long-ass campaign for my dedicated friends that usually lasts a solid two months. I want to challenge myself as a DM this time and approach the opening, hook, into, etc. by having the players NOT be affiliated in anyway prior to the game starting. I understand that this is pretty normal and common for most but I've always had the party know each other, be in a guild prior or I do the easy route and say "you're all in jail, nerds."

So I was wondering if you MLG pros could tell me how you usually corral the party together while making it natural and not awkward. I've told my PCs to come up with a reason why their character would want to desperately find someone because I'm having the players start at a big wine festival and each of them are looking for the same person for their own made up individual reasons.

So how can I get them all to naturally meet and party up to go on an epic two month adventure to find this guy without forcing it?

>the person they're looking for is not at the festival, obviously
>>
>two months in a campaign is nowadays considered to be a lot of time
>>
Maybe they're all displaced victims of war? Citizens, the lot of them, corralled by the army and relocated to makeshift homes away from the war. Session 1 involves an overwhelming enemy attack that is too much for the garrison, with the characters meeting in the hustle of arming themselves to bolster the soldier's defending forces.

Welcome to life where scheduling is a bitch and everyone has "Can't do it today because reasons"

RRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNNGGGE

Seriously, they're all looking for some con-artist who scammed them in various ways. They all get to pick a way he scammed them. One person is a jilted lover from the Nobility that he ran off with all their valuable family heirloom (that actually turned out to be a fake, but they don't know that), another was working for him at a store where it turned out the goods were stolen and they framed him for the robberies, another one is actually his child that he ran out on leaving the mother and child mired in debt that they still carry, one is a grizzled old man CONVINCED they stole his lawn gnomes and unwilling to believe otherwise or to shut up about it, you can also have a priest/cleric who is representing a temple that the BBEG defrauded - or alternatively, they have had a vision that they will be responsible for untold death and destruction (which, if your party is like this and you know them well enough, you can spin as the damage done by the party chasing him as he grows ever more desperate.)

Maybe some possible inter-party goals? Abandoned child wants to kill him, jilted noble doesn't realize he is shit and believes the lies he told when he took off with the heirloom and wants to reunite to help him, framed employee/partner wants to drag him back to clear his name, crazy gnome dude is just fucking crazy and has changing motivations etc.

One character IS the actual guy who got robbed/ganked by the real BBEG who took all his shit and left him disfigured because the heirloom stolen was given to him as a gift and actually WAS a McGuffin that the Nobles thought was just an imitation or drained of power. So now he has to prevent the party from finding out who he was while using them to get his stuff back, meanwhile he still has to deal with his flaws such as being a compulsive con-man.

We play way more frequently than most.

Two months playing once a week is def not long. Today is the age of instant messaging and Roll20, so we play every other day.

It's in my list of "things I'll never actually fucking run" along with my Broken Skeleton quest and my Half-Baked Hero bakery quest which I am apparently just writing out instead of running.

Does it necessarily have to be a single person that they're going after? Because if you open the letter up a tad you could do some really interesting things.

Maybe they're all just being hired for an lengthy, multi-stage heist. Some of them are hardened criminals, others refuse to kill, but they all have their reasons.
Or they could be trying to expose a multinational corporation or other special interest group? To play off of >>46048872 maybe some of the party want to utterly destroy it, or some want to manipulate it, or some want to see it come to justice, but all of them agree that the world would be better off without it at present.

To go off the above, I think a really cool one would be that the party is a bunch of above-average gumshoes who are tasked with investigating a sort of corrupt super hero legion that operates in the city. Some of the party are an official investigation team pieced together by the FBI, another member could be a rowdy father who lost his family to the super heroes and insists on joining, and another member who was extorted by the super heroes, etc, etc. They're outmatched, but with careful planning they CAN capture individual Supers, but it's bad news if the whole legion catches wind of their nosiness.
