I'm a beginner at all kinds of RPG, with only a tiny amount of experience with d&d4e, but I wanna learn how to DM. I know a bunch of settings well enough to run a game in it, but my problem is I'm shit with rules and math. Any suggestion for a system that's really simple to learn and run, with few rules and lots of adaptability so I can use it in different settings?
>>
P.s preferably something that has a system for social/out of combat "puzzles" or whatever, so it's not just combat and combat and more combat.
>>
Well, let's see. From your description it seems like your best bet will be FATE. FATE is the only one that I can think of that's both setting agnostic and has social combat rules.
>>
>>45697408
Thanks man, I'll look into that. Are there editions of fate? Any particular one that's best?
>>
>>45697575
The best core rules are pretty much what are on Evil Hat's website. If you're looking for the best non setting agnostic version of FATE then the answer gets pretty subjective based on the setting you want to play. I'm actually not that big into the rules for FATE myself, but hey it fits what you asked for. Head's up though if you happen to like FATE's rules and want to talk about FATE on /tg/ prepare to have to wade through post after post talking about dumb politics surrounding the company behind FATE.
>>
>>45697693
Man if dumb company politics is the worst /tg/ can do, I'd say that speaks for a pretty decent system. Thanks a lot man.

One last thing, this picture's a pretty good overview to show just how many choices there are for systems. Have fun, anon.

If you take DnD as a measure, most other games appear simple to learn by comparison. The only exceptions are things like Burning Wheel, Gurps, or Phoenix Command. Seems pointless to list everything else.

First dissuade yourself of the notion that games are about settings. The settings are the imagination part, rules resolve the game part. Make sure the game part fits your group.

There's lots of different ways to categorize RPGs. GNS isn't a hard measure, but it can give you a clue about what a game focuses on.

As a general overview you have your gamist systems like ORE or Luke Crane systems, including combat encounter games like DnD.

There's the meta games like Fate.

There's sims, which can be either dominating every aspect (Gurps), or remain in the background to let the GM do their thing until combat starts (BRP).

And there's specialists which do only one thing like Don't Rest Your Head or Everyone is John.

As a strategy to approach this I'd suggest playing lots of different games with lots of different groups. Go to conventions. See if your FLGS has a game night. Try Roll20. Gamers know more gamers, just get in the scene. Too many players get stuck with their one system and never even glimpse what other games can be about.

To start looking around maybe check out WEG d6 (old), FAE (new), Reign (good), Delta Green (different), and Mouse Guard (classic). All but Mouse Guard and Reign are free to try - Reign Enchiridion is $10 and Mouse Guard is $20. But really just find groups and join them for a session of their game, doesn't matter what it is.

>ignores entire branches and guides badly
Not a good chart!
>>
>>45697810
this is pretty elaborate, and I don't know how to answer most of the questions, but I'll take it and I'll use it as best I can, thanks
>>
>>45697929
I have no idea what most of the words you said mean, but what I glimpsed from it is that I should try out a lot of systems and groups, which was kind of the opposite of what I was thinking I'd do.

>What occupation should I seek education for?
> That is a complicated topic and the answer is mostly based on your personal preference, best intern and discover different industries.
>No. Tell me who to be. Now.

M-kay. Play Gurps for the rest of your life. You have the personality for it.
>>
>>45698057
yeah, picking a roleplaying system is similar to picking what education and career you'll spend your entire adult life on.

Calm the fuck down, it's a hobby I don't even have yet.

You are entertaining.

Dungeon World. No question.
>>
>>45698144
I've heard about dungeon world, and that it was supposedly sort of what I'm looking for, but I also heard that it was, as the name suggests, unsuited for anything but dungeon crawling. Is that incorrect?

Barbarians of Lemuria. If anything, the pic makes it sound more complicated than it is.

>Barbarians of Lemuria,Mythic Edition (current edition) -- https://www.mediafire.com/folder/7llc83r2xf8bg/Barbarians_of_Lemuria_-_Mythic_Edition

>Barbarians of Lemuria, Legendary Edition (earlier edition, fewer details & more minimalist presentation makes it even easier to learn, but the rules aren't as refined) -- http://www.mediafire.com/download/p5w885sa9a869ma/Barbarians+Of+Lemuria+-+Legendary+Edition.pdf

>Barbarians of Lemuria, House Rules / Patches for Legendary Edition (if you want the bare bones minimalism of Legendary, but with the rules tightened up a bit) -- https://mega.co.nz/#F!CtQR2bST!y_awB-GHCiL3CdK4iLCV7A

sounds wonderfully simple. Downloading, thanks
>>
>>45698164
DW is just the principle of simple as can be stereotypes as classes in a genre setting that is entirely arbitrary and has no canon. They sell games for lots of settings, the more millennial, the better. Monsterhearts for instance, the high school sexual orientation rape game - with monsters.
>>
not OP here, but what's the best way to introduce players to tabletop roleplays? I once tried it with Dungeon World. They didn't even create their characters because it was ''too much reading''. I linked them to the dungeonworldsrd character creation
>>
>>45698299
>too much reading
well i would drop the idea of playing with them.
>>
>>45698335
Then how do you find people that would be interested in playing? In my country tabletop rpgs are not popular. Many have never heard of dungeons and dragons.
>>
>>45698386
OP here, I kinda have the same problem, so I was just gonna play online, as I already have a friend or two online who'd wanna play.
>>
>>45698386
>Many have never heard of dungeons and dragons
Don't brag. I would kill for an uncontaminated player base.
>>
>>45698299
I started out GMing and pretty much did all the rules stuff myself (including the rolling). Just pick a simple system and give folks a quick summary as you go along. You might even want to have pre-made characters for them to choose from (the trick is that you let them change them as desired).

>>45698335
Eh. The thing is that he's trying to get them into something they've had no experience with and the selling point is "read a bunch of shit". I mean, its not a good sign, but it's somewhat understandable, and not necessarily indicative of how they'd be after they get some role-playing under their belts.
>>
>>45698508
Oooh, pre-made characters sounds like a good option to involve people in playing without forcing them to read too much.

Seconding this. Don't listen to FATEwankers trying to stick FATE to everything. FATE is simple to learn, but hard to understand.

Dungeon World is what you want. It even has a free SRD on the net, it will take a few trials to grasp completely as it follows the meta way, but it literally is 3 pages to learn for players (char sheet plus moves) and like 8 for the GM.
>>
>>45699985
DungeonWorld is indeed a good first game because it is strictly for beginners only.
