What's the best setting for a generic one-shot campaign?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

What's the best setting for a generic one-shot campaign? My friends (who have never done any tabletop before) want to try out 5e and asked for a totally average and generic D&D game. Which I don't really have a problem with. I'm thinking either Faerun or Points of Light?

pic related, what this thread may very well become

Seeing as how FR is the current supported D&D setting, I'd go with that. You could even do one of the adventures they've printed already.

Well, Faerun is an actual campaign setting that has background information that you'll have to read and synthesize, so I'd say "fuck that" in advance.

Just make up your own setting, fill it full of things that you think are cool, and then go from there. If they want it generic, just include these elements:

>Fallen or declining pseudo-Roman empire
>Aggressive orc tribes to the east
>Mysterious jungles full of ruins to the south
>Frost-bitten land of raiders and giants to the north
>Endless forests and painted barbarians to the west
>Game takes place in pseudo-Arthurian France/England with chivalrous knights and imposing castles
>Include at least one Evil Duke and a Righteous King away on a quest in a far away land
>Elves in the western forests, dwarves in the northern frostland, halflings in the center, who cares

And there you go, a setting. Enjoy!

Make some setpieces and string them together with vague shit made up on the spot.

This.

Maybe take the Dungeon World route. Prepare a dungeon crawl, ask the players about the world, adjust the dungeon and its inhabitants to match.

Generic fantasy world made on the fly with lotr, skyrim, star wars, Conan, and pop culture references is the best and universal setting for fantasy beginners
