A Heretic may see the truth and seek redemption. He may be forgiven his past and will be absolved in death. A Traitor can never be forgiven. A Traitor will never find peace in this world or the next. There is nothing as wretched or as hated in all the world as a Traitor.

>>
>>44357075
Phasma is a grill, and does even less than boba. Its like they were cut out of her merchandising sales and decided to make the character as shit and unimportant as possible.
>>

>A heathen can seek truth, a heretic is like the religious traitor.

Sebastian Thor was declared to be a heretic by Goge Vandire. Which one of them was actually heretic? Heresy is in the eye of the beholder.
>>
>>44357115
Because he was bad ass and probably a better fighter than Kylo Ren.
>>
>>44357115
The same reason everyone obsessed over Boba Fett: He looked like a badass, and had a few bad ass moments. In this guy's case, he has a really cool weapon - It's like a light saber... but it isn't!
>>
>>44357115
He's the first stormtrooper in any of the movies to ever do anything cool, impressive and interesting. Everyone likes the stormtroopers, but all they ever do is job hard and end up as cannon fodder. Even Phasma, the stormtrooper that was DESIGNED to be cool and standout, was lameshit compared to TR-8R.
>>
>>44357126
She is going to be in the next film. No doubt. They never show her demise, even if it was for the punchline.
>>
>>44357246
First impressions matter. She's a jobber they will try and redeem. And probably fail. TR8R 4ever.
>>
>>44357267
It's been established that she'll sell out the empire just to save her own life.

On one hand that does kinda give her a bit of depth as far as empire character go... but in this movie it just came off as her just being a chromed up coward.

If they actually do something with that whole "I make the empire work for me, but i don't work for the empire" angle in the next movies, then i can kinda see it pay off later. But if it turns out that that wasn't the case and she really was just being a coward and everything then frankly there's no way to take her seriously at all now.

Either way, terrible first impression.
>>
>>44357310
Even then shes fucked imo. Captured by mr space janitor and a retired smuggler. Possesses no backbone at all. Even if self interested she displayed no strength. Into the trash she goes.

Promotional material led to a different assumption about the character than "2 minutes of inconsequential screentime." As a member of a group where stormtroopers are designed to be non-individualistic, her having unique armor and a name led to the not unreasonable assumption that she was going to be more important than she was.

>>
>>44357364
Well...I don't know how first order armour works (I'm assuming just normal stormtroopers armour)

Which means that our true hero Tr8r was only knocked out by the blaster.

People always think stormtroopers armour is shit but in reality it's amazing.
It spreads the lethal energy across your body so you're not dead. Only down and out (and sore in the area of impact) and not like...ded

And if I'm correct unless it's a heavy blaster (like anti tank or sniper shit) the armour has a 99.99% effective rate.

And said lightsaber has a switch on the outside.

The number of lightsabers that have to be activated with the Force is extremely, extremely low. Like, maybe a dozen over the course of hundreds of novels and comics ever showed that.

Anakin's lightsaber, the lightsaber that Luke wields in ESB and first ignites in ANH while playing around with it, which Han is shown to activate with a switch on Hoth, is not one of these.

>>
>>44363299
>an anti-lightsaber weapon

There are multiple reasons. The first is that one of the main goals of the First Order are to eliminate the remnants of the Jedi. While I'm sure everyone is relying on Kylo Ren to finish him off, it makes sense that all of your soldiers should be prepared to fight a Jedi.

The second is that the baton is not specifically an "anti-lightsaber" weapon, it just happens to stop lightsabers. It's not the material the weapons is made out of that stops the lightsaber, it's the energy field around it.
>>
>>44363362
*first order

>>
>>44363299
Me and my friends were talking about this. Our best theory is that it's an incredibly situational weapon, for fighting some other kind of enemy, and the First Order was like "you know what, just to be safe, let's make it useful against the weapons that our oldest enemy (who we think are all dead but might not be) use."
That, or he's Kylo Ren's parole officer.

Non-lightsaber energy weapons have existed for years in Star Wars.

The Magnaguard were using Electrostaves well over fifty years ago, and it's not a huge leap to assume most nonlethal melee weapons would need some sort of heat or energy component to keep them relevant.

The only explanation other than "the Force" that I can think of is Darth Vader went out of his way to get it back, and it became lost sometime after that. That or some janitors found it and sold it off to some black market dealers or Jedi artifact collectors.

Seriously though, Obi Wans lightsaber would have made way more sense if it wasn't for the whole "family" thing.
>>
>>44363398

>>
>>44363486

Not really. I mean sure, maybe 4000 years ago in the old canon when there were literally millions of jedi running around, yeah, you'd see Anti-Lightsaber proofing as standard, like the KOTOR games claim all weapons are made of Cortosis. But in the "Modern" setting? There's like maybe 10,000 Jedi by the fall of the Old Republic, and I'd be very surprised if there were ever more then two dozen Jedi in the New Order.
>>
Its just a god damn shock baton with some form of energy field, look what it did to Finn when he got jabbed in the chest with it.

>>
>>44363589
The problem I have with that is that melee weapons seems kind of useless unless you're a jedi. If you can't use the force to help you deflect bullets, you're going to get shot very quickly. I can't see many scenarios where they would prefer melee weapons over their usual blasters. Plus stormtroopers already have those weird "stun" rounds they used in A New Hope on Leia, so they don't need a nonlethal option.
Plus it seems too big, bulky and expensive to be a backup or holdout weapon if you run out of ammo.

Sometimes I think about reading the Star Wars EU.

Considering the Star Wars universe, there are certain species and cultures the First Order could possibly encounter where it would be prudent to have a melee weapon. The Clone Wars also showed a few examples where this was relevant.

Failing that, there's always the simple explanation that the First Order just wants some troopers to be able to theoretically hold their own against a Jedi.

It wasn't anti-lightsaber. Lightsabers have been nerfed. It's why Finn wasn't cut in half and Ren didn't lose his arm.
>>
>>44363732
Vibroblades won't do shit against lightsabers unless it incorporates a lightsaber resistant material in its design.

Only energy weapons, like the magnaguard Staffs or the riot tonfa Memetrooper used are resistant to lightsabers.
>>
>>44363884
If the "Old Republic" was a Republic before the prequels' Republic, then that line is still technically true.

It's kind of confusing for there to be three distinct Republics, though.

The Thrawn Series is probably the very best of all the expanded Univewrse stuff. Thrawn is the sort of Villain I'd wish we got in The Force Awakens, someone who rules through making his men love, respect and want to follow him, and not be coerced through fear. He's an antagonist you can actually root for.

One of the best scenes in the movie. The only shitty part was that they missed a cool moment to make him a stormtrooper Finn knew personally (you know, like the one that left the bloody handprint on him in the beginning)

Watching Finn have a moment of horror and saying something like "Tr971, is that you?!?" And then desperately try to reason with him in the fight would have been an awesome thing to watch. I feel like they really missed on that. Would have hammered home just how much the stormtroopers hate him.

Stormtroopers are supposed to be the cream of the crop of imperial troops, the guys that make the hero go "aw shit". It was cool to finally see one get a moment where he legitimately had a main character on the ropes.

>One of the best scenes in the movie.
Nah. It was shoved in there for a cheap thrill and made no sense in the context of the film.
That trooper is the only guy with a shield and the mace in the entire film and in the films before it. He throws the shield away immediately and starts an awkward tonfa vs lightsaber fight that didn't serve any storytelling purpose whatsoever since we know Finn already abandoned the First Order for good considering how many he blew up in the hangar scene in the beginning.

And having Finn know him personally would have at least showcased the indoctrination of other troopers or differing points of views, but it would also be a really obvious clichee.

The weapons of the flashlight monks shear through armor and block laser shots. Far better to ignore such weapons against one wielding such a blade, and either use kinetic projectiles (might vaporize a bullet, but no ricochet to worry about) or electric weapons in melee then, take advantage of the fact your weapons have weight to possibly throw them and their much lighter weapons off balance. Besides which, it was probably a tool to handle armor if it had traits similar to medieval flails, or he wanted to drag the traitor back to use as an example.

Bit this is personal, have you ever been mad at something that you want to hit it?

Yeah, a gun is good, but do you want to beat something up and hear it's skull being crushed with your own strength. The First Order troopers were trained like the Clones were, and see each other as brothers, and Finn just betrays them and is carrying a Jedi weapon and working with the enemy. That right there got his blood boiling something fierce.

Because J.J. Abrams is a hack and actually shat the bed with FA. It was fun, but definitely Disney-fied so that it was probably a blast for kids, but for anyone older than 12, it was full of plotholes.

And the casting sucks.
>Driver is a ninny, and sort of becomes better as he does his thing with Han/Ford, but then shits the bed again with his creepy highschooler prom-request, "I CAN TEACH YOU!"
>Boyega is a goddamn ham or his scripted lines suck ass and make him look like a twit; I can't tell which it is
>Apparently there's space Irish mobs and what I assume to be Tagalogs as well

Abrams lied. Or Disney did, doesn't matter anymore.

If the prequel episodes took themselves too seriously, the "new" episodes are leading off with the series parodying its golden films for children and idiots.
And paying the hell out of critics for good reviews.

On Rotten Tomatoes this shit has above goddamn 93%. It's "good" but not THAT good.

This random mook saw Finn and was so pissed at him being a traitor he dropped his shield and gun and decided, i'm gonna fight this nigga mano e mano and he actually held his own and nearly killed him despite the fact Finn was using a lightsaber.

He was kind of a badass.

Driver is goddamn fantastic

He is what happens when Any Given Fa/tg/uy enters the star wars universe played to the T

Instant fall to the dark side, absolutely terrifying but very much not in the way he wants to be.

A try-hard little fucker who thinks he is incredibly hot shit, and genuinely has some potential, but is held back by just how breathtakingly self-absorbed a little shit he is.

Darth Vader: School Shooter is a fantastic character idea. Oh, yes, you're scared of him. But not because he, personally, is terrifying. You're scared of him because he's got the world's most fragile ego and the second his feelings get hurt he is going to break everything in arm's reach, and it will be cold comfort to your next of kin when Daddy Snoke makes him apologize to them.
>>
>>44370294
Driver was great for those reasons though. He's an upstart trainee trying to live up to his grandfathers name.
>>
>>44370331
The fact that he goes up against anybody with a lightsaber in the Star Wars universe in melee says he's retarded.
But really, really, really brave.

A lightsaber is so rare it says the person holding it, even if he used to be your wimpy janitor, by legend and reputation, is going to force choke and rape you with his magic glowstick.

In hindsight, or overall, TR-8R has balls bigger than Starkiller base.
>>

With Driver it's a little hard to tell.
He's just on the fine line of awkwardness so well that you can't tell if he's really just out of place (his nose and intonation isn't helping at all, sadly), or if he's playing his "role" exquisitely well.

And Finn/Boyega's horrendous lines along with anytime Carrie Fisher or Harrison Ford speaks makes any dialogue written for Force Awakens somewhat...dunno, untrustworthy. I can't take most anything at face value because it's just so goddamn bad overall that I can't tell who's being a good actor outside of Harrison Ford.
>bless him, he made his lines believable
>if it shat over Han Solo's original image as a cool rebel guy, and not a doddering snarky uncle

I just came back from seeing it and I don't see any of these problems.

Finn's oddness makes sense to me, he's a child soldier indoctrinated in party dogma and forced to obey incredibly strict rules all the time, of course once he gains freedom he's going to not know how to behave normally.

And Ren was a great villain, Anakin 2.0 where they play on the whiny emo bitch to make it an asset for the character, showing all the problems he has and why it ultimately makes him fail in his task.

I certainly don't see how this is 'Disney-fied'. The Rebels animated show was for sure but this? War, death, destruction, families torn apart, a villain who is not only evil but probably has some severe mental issues, I'm just not seeing it.
>>
>>44370640
Not the anons you replied to, but while I enjoyed the movie it didn't feel like Star Wars. It felt like it was wearing the skin of a Star Wars movie.

>if it shat over Han Solo's original image as a cool rebel guy, and not a doddering snarky uncle

Pro tip. Cool rebel guys grow into doddering snarky uncles
>>
>>44370669
To each their own, I watched all the original movies again before going and my first really exciting thought was that it felt just like Star Wars again, action, adventure, the effects, sets, camera work, it felt just like it to me.

>>44370677
Completely agreed, heaven forbid characters grow and change over decades.
>>
>>44370640
>of course once he gains freedom he's going to not know how to behave normally.
It's largely in Finn's vernacular and ideals, which are completely TOO "normal" for a kid "indoctrinated in party dogma and forced to obey incredibly strict rules all the time." If anything, he should be dropping spaghetti left and right, not being a "pretty normal dude with a good heart and is pretty funny/socially-adept."

As for the Disney-fied part, it's mostly that FA was hype as hell from Abrams, and didn't live up to it. The critics are similarly also praising it far more than its worth if it had been a stand-alone sci-fi film instead of a new SW film.

I am reluctant to give the likes of Huffpo any further pageviews, but this article sums up more or less the obvious parts of why FA is just plain bad or lazy:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/seth-abramson/40-unforgivable-plot-holes-in-star-wars-the-force-awakens_b_8850324.html
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/seth-abramson/20-more-plot-holes-from-s_b_8856844.html

The second article is just nitpicking though; it's a lot of the first article that's glaring.

It's pretty universal.

You probably have the nostalgia goggles on so fierce as to not be able to see Force Awakens as a film in its own right honestly.

Bane?
>>
>>44370720
I just read through the first ten of those plot holes, and I'm really thinking not bothering reading the rest.

Because so far I looked at each individual one and immediately thought of a completely plausible explanation for why it happened, or felt that it wasn't even a plot hole and was just them whining about something they didn't personally like.
>>
>>44370771
This more or less says you like SW not for any internal consistency or setting, but because "fun shit happens in space and I'm just here for the ride."

I don't want to call you something as pithy as casual, but here it fits you.
>>
>>44370771
To continue, it looks like the first 10 plot holes would only be plot holes for someone who didn't bother to look at any of the actual reasons for why things happened half the time.

True, it does annoy me that this movie FORCES you to go look at supplementary material to understand some things, but half an hour of web browsing after the movie answered my questions and immediately negates some of these 'plot holes' as just plain ignorance on the part of the writer, or acting like there's no possible explanation because they personally don't understand.
>>
>>44370771
>I looked at each individual one and immediately thought of a completely plausible explanation for why it happened
Start explaining, because this shit is going to haunt the entirety of JJA's involvement with Star Wars.
>>
>>44370797
>it does annoy me that this movie FORCES you to go look at supplementary material to understand some things, but half an hour of web browsing after the movie answered my questions and immediately negates some of these 'plot holes'
If you have to go look up explanations for the biggest film release in maybe a decade to stop being silly in its own canon, that more indicates some lazy and/or bad writing and the bane of sci-fi (i.e. readers should be able to understand why X sci-fi shit happens without the writer necessarily having to use excessive exposition to get it across).
>>
>>44370640
It doesn't seem believable to me that someone raised to be a member of an army with a reputation for being malevolent stony-faced killing machines (in a setting with literal killing machines, no less), would hoot and holler whenever shit blows up like some kind of Rebel scum who's a big fan of Die Hard. The only explanation I can think of is that Kylo programmed Finn to defect and join the Rebels as part of a plan to find Luke.
>>
>>44370865
He doesn't seem that clever. Maybe a First Order officer or even Snoke?, but not Kylo Ren.
>>
>>44370794
Uh, no that's not what I'm saying at all. Me saying I don't see these plot holes as being legitimate criticism does not translate to me saying 'lol star wars is so wacky you don't need reasons for things!'

I'm saying that, as a long time fan and lover of the franchise and universe, that I don't believe these criticisms are valid, and that many of the plot holes discussed on that side either rely on the writer just not knowing there was an explanation, or not taking a few seconds to think of what an explanation could be.

Why does Rey speak Wookie? Well, she never speaks it, just understands it. For one there are tons of aliens who speak their own language and have humans understand it. Also, Rey lives on a very multispecies scavenger world with all kinds of aliens in town, she probably picked it up there.

Complaining about someone surviving a crash. Okay that's not even a plot hole, just them complaining about something they didn't like.

Ren not instantly wasting Finn in a lightsaber fight? Stormtroopers get close combat training specifically to fight lightsaber users, as TRAITOR TROOPER showed with his energy tonfa. Ren is a half baked acolyte who never finished his training and hasn't had a saber duel in years, and isn't exactly rational or a good tactical thinker at the best of times.

Why does the First Order want to destroy the Republic? Because they're indoctrinated like North Korea to believe the Republic is a bloated, decadent cesspit that must be cleansed, and that supporting the Resistance against them is an act of war. The Resistance isn't an official Republic operation, just a bunch of troops personally loyal to Leia, and the Republic is quietly funding them because there's not enough support for a full scale war.
>>
>>44370884

Why is the entire Republic's force in one star system? Because after the fall of the Empire there was a big shift away from huge galaxy spanning military forces, instead falling back to individual planetary defense forces with a smaller crisis response fleet standing by at the republic capital world of the time.

Finn thinks he will be chased across the galaxy for betraying his post. Of course he does, he's been indoctrinated to think if he turns traitor he'll be hunted to the ends of existence for his crimes, to keep him in line. Also please stop calling him a janitor, he was a soldier assigned sanitation duty. Because real soldiers never have to sweep floors or dig latrines right?

Bitching about Phasma not being more important. You know for a list of 40 plot holes, they sure list a lot of things that are not plot holes but instead just general bitching.

Convenient rift on exploding planet opens, ending final saber battle. Again, not plot hole. Kinda cheap resolution, but not a plot hole.

Han quickly finds the Falcon just after it launched. He quickly explains that he tracked the unique engine signature of his old ship, which he's been specifically scanning for and picked it up as soon as they launched.

Blowing up Starkiller Base with intel given by the 'janitor' (there's that word again) Most likely anyone assigned to that facility would be given a basic briefing on it. Even if not, it likely took years to build and Finn was probably there for most of it. He could easily have seen it under construction.

Participating in one massacre makes Finn betray. You know for a list that constantly claims Finn is a janitor who never did anything but sweep floors, it's odd they now demand to know why he's not been on constant front line puppy kicking duty.

I would go on, but I'm getting tired of this stupid list, so this will have to do.

The stories you read, and the universe they created is no less interesting or valid as a form of media. It's effectively just an AU now. It's like feeling as though all time spent watching Star Trek was wasted with the JJ Abrams movies.

Not him, but Force Awakens was never gong to be a film in its own right, it's inexorably tied to the franchise; both the liked original movies and the hated prequels, and can't help but be compared to them.

The thing is, nostalgia goggles are what would lead you to thinking the original movies were any better in many of the aspects that are complained about here. Fact is, they're crammed with plot holes and stupid dialogue, but it doesn't matter because they're pulpy adventure stories with heart that manage to be engaging regardless. That is why people like FA, it manages to approximate that kind of tone, which was what people had come to expect of a star wars movie before the prequels altered their expectations.

Are you blind or just stupid? This has always been the reason people like star wars. Watch the original trilogy sometime, they're a nonsensical mess if you pick them to bits as people are want to, but they're goddamn fun and enjoyable.

that just reminds me of why we play all jedi / no jedi.

so the smuggler doesn't come in and just wreck the melee weapon user from a far.
